Dr. Troels Engberg-Pedersen is a Professor Emeritus of New Testament exegesis at the University of Copenhagen. In this conversation we talk specifically about the relationship between Christianity and Stoicism as seen specifically in the New Testament authors Paul and John. We look at their understand of the spirit (pneuma) and the logos. We then discuss how this Stoic understanding of the pneuma can help us better understand the Christology of the Gospel of John. We also mention also scholars like Wayne meeks, Ernst Käsemann, and many more. Dr. Engberg-Pedersen is the author of many books. Troels Engberg Pedersen is a Pauline theologian, author, and professor of New Testament exegesis at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. For approximately 25 years, Pedersen has focused his attentions on the writings of Paul the Apostle and on exploring how the structure and content of the Pauline epistles align with themes which are present in Stoic philosophy of the Hellenistic Period. When set in conjunction with Paul's identity as a Greco-Roman Jew, the implications of Paul's letters standout as a demonstration of how the early Christian church community developed in light of the Greco-Roman world which surrounded it. Paul and the Stoics
All institutions stagnate over time. But if the original inspiration contains enough universal truth, it can survive the centuries. This seems to be the case with Christianity. Despite millions of Christians who believe all they have to do is verbally profess their faith in their Lord Jesus Christ, a much deeper understanding of the human condition and each individual's capacity for transformation remains just waiting to be rediscovered. Troels Engberg-Pedersen is just one of the scholars of...

In this episode I'm talking about a few of the powerful life-changing ideas of the Stoics—philosophers like Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius. I also (too) briefly touch on some of the overlaps between Stoicism and Christian theology. For more on that particular subject you can have a look at "Stoicism in Early Christianity," edited by Tuomas Rasimus, Troels Engberg-Pedersen, and Ismo Dunderberg. I refer here mostly to (my own take on) Epictetus's "Discourses and Selected Writings," as well as Marcus Aurelius's "Meditations."
