Zambia's former president, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, is demanding the immediate release of Fred M'membe, leader of the opposition Socialist Party. M'membe, a former journalist, was recently arrested by the police and charged with seditious practice for publishing an article entitled “Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic Bishops about the $20 Million dollars Payout to buy Zambia's Silence" on the social media network X, formerly Twitter. The police say the article was aimed at turning public opinion against the government -- an accusation the opposition party denies. Frank Bwalya, Director General of the governing UPND's Presidential Campaign Media Support Program, tells VOA's Peter Clottey, the police must be allowed to carry out their constitutional duties without intimidation or harassment

On 12th August Zambians went to the polls in an election which was surrounded by concerns around creeping authoritarianism and the actions of President Lungu to skew the vote in his favour. A knife edge contest was predicted. Instead opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema won a landslide victory and his UPND party won a parliamentary majority, reversing Zambia's course towards authoritarianism. We dive into the main issues of the campaign and Zambia's history of alternating democratisation and authoritarianisation. To do so we're joined by our unofficial Sub-Saharan Africa correspondent Michael Bankole of Kings College London. President of Zambia's United Party for National Development (UPND), Hakainde Hichilema, has successfully filed his nomination papers for the upcoming Presidential election. The UPND leader has settled for his Vice President as running mate and he joins a number of other candidates that have nominated females as their running mates for the 2021 elections. Hilda Akekelwa reports.

Hon Batuke Imenda was recently elected to the National Management Committee of Zambia's largest oppostion party UPND and subsequently appointed as its Secretary General. He is our guest on our series of political agendas and upcoming general elections in August 2021.
