In the latest episode of Hospitality Hangout podcast, Michael Schatzberg “The Restaurant Guy” and Jimmy Frischling “ The Finance Guy” chat with Atul Sood, Chief Business Officer at Kitchen United to explore the multi-restaurant ordering experience. Sood shares his background that included leading global food delivery partnerships for McDonalds during a time Doordash and Postmates were just getting off the ground and UberEats didn't exist. He had the opportunity to set up global partnerships in the United States, Singapore, Canada, Australia and more. When asked what makes Kitchen United unique, Sood says, “we are front and center where people live and work. We have a front of house in each physical location. So consumers can walk in place an order on a kiosk and take their food to go. We allow for multi-concept ordering.” He adds, “We are excited because we've been around for four years now and we've learned a lot.”Sood says when asked about Kitchen United acquiring ghost kitchen developer Zuul, “The ability to acquire a team that was that knowledgeable in the space and that had been pioneers in their own right in New York City was an opportunity that we just couldn't afford to pass up.” Adding, “In addition to getting their technology stack which is very complimentary to ours and really the driver behind this infrastructure business.” Sood talks about food halls and Kitchen United's partnership with Westfield Malls, he says, “It's been in a test for nearly nine months now ten months now and really what we're doing is we're enabling two different groups of customers to get access to the food court and other restaurants around them all.” He adds, “the first group is people who live close by who used to have to commute into the mall to get the food, now they can get it through delivery and by the way we make the delivery process a lot easier for the driver instead of having to park go into the mall go up the escalator.” To hear about Zuul Market consolidating group ordering technology, how the delivery process was streamlined and Kitchen United's partnership with Kroger supermarkets tune in to this episode of Hospitality Hangout. In this episode of The Barron Report, host Paul Barron meets with Nabeel Alamgir, the chief executive officer and co-founder of Lunchbox, to explore the future of eating and online ordering in the hospitality industry.Three Key Points:Lunchbox Technologies was launched in 2019. The company supplies multi-unit restaurants with an online ordering system and marketing engine. Before founding Lunchbox, Alamgir worked his way up from busboy to chief marketing officer at Bareburger. For Alamgir, operators today need three things: a direct order option, half the sales coming directly to their system, and a coherent virtual and digital presence. Restaurateurs need to have the pace and mobility of start-ups to stay ahead of an ever-changing industry.Looking ahead, operators are becoming more ambitious. Tech companies would do well to go beyond making websites and loyalty systems, and start crafting more data-driven offerings and virtual experiences that give operators the ability to build consumer attention without a storefront.Tweetable Quotes:“GrubHub and the restaurant industry were never aligned, and I wanted to do something about it. So Lunchbox was born. We grew 700 percent last year and we're growing 500 percent this year. It's been bonkers.” – Nabeel Alamgir“We're not trying to hire the best people. We're trying to hire the right people for what this company needs right now.” – Nabeel Alamgir“The problem is people give up. Restaurateurs are not tech-savvy—and it's fine for them not to be. What is not okay is not hiring people who are.” – Nabeel AlamgirIndustry veteran Paul Barron takes restaurant business insights to the next level. The restaurant industry isn't just the business of food. It's a cross-functioning, multivariate entity that touches almost every industry — after all, everyone needs to eat. So, why not learn from the greats from all businesses? Ordering a Taxi for Immediately After Shabbat

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The Poskim discuss whether it is permissible to order a non-Jewish taxi service to pick one up immediately after Shabbat. Obviously, the non-Jewish driver would have to violate the Shabbat in order to reach the address on time. The question is whether his driving on Shabbat is considered Melacha done for the Jew, which is prohibited to benefit from.Rav Yishak Yaakov Weiss (1901-1989), in his Minhat Yishak (Vol. 6:25) was asked a similar question with regard to calling a non-Jewish driver on Friday to pick up Jews who spent Shabbat in Meron at the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. He concluded that it is prohibited to do so. This strict ruling was questioned by other authorities, including Rav Shelomo Miller. They rule that it is permitted based on the Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan, 1839-1933, 276:27). The Mishna Berura cites the opinion of the Taz (Rabbi David Segal, Poland, 1586-1667) who permits instructing a non-Jewish maid to wash dishes, which is intrinsically a permitted act, even though she will have to turn on the lights in the kitchen to do so. He reasons that the Jew has no direct benefit from the light; it was her prerogative to turn them on, and she did so for her own benefit. The Mishna Berura applies this leniency to sending a non-Jewish messenger on a mission on Shabbat, even though he will kindle a candle to illuminate his path. Based on these precedents, these Poskim are lenient and permit ordering the taxi for Mosei Shabbat, since the Jew did not direct him to drive on Shabbat; he is doing so for his own benefit. This lenient opinion is the accepted Halacha. However, one must exercise caution not to accidentally order a Jewish driver. It is possible that the Minhat Yishak was strict on this issue, because he was dealing with a case where the taxi company charged for the drive to the Jew on Shabbat. In such a case, the time driving on Shabbat constitutes an integral part of the service provided to the Jew.SUMMARY: It is permitted on Friday to order a non-Jewish driver to pick one up immediately after Shabbat.

Since its inception, SevenRooms has served hospitality operators from independent restaurateurs to global hospitality groups. They created the company to overcome a challenge they recognized within the industry: limited access to and ownership of guest data. Over the past ten years, they have built a platform that unlocks a 360-degree view of the guest journey and empowers operators to deliver highly personalized experiences to every on- and off-premise diner. As a result, they are leveraging technology to helping hospitality businesses, big and small, increase revenue and create loyal guests for life. Joel Montaniel, CEO & Co-Founder of SevenRooms, returns to the Tech Talks Daily Podcast for a catchup. We discuss on-premise and off-premise dining, vaccine passport mandates, and how customer's needs have evolved over the last 15 months. We also talk about how Joel sees hospitality adapting to these needs by leveraging technology. Finally, we discuss how restaurants can create a seamless journey that diners prefer from discovery to booking to the dining experience itself with technology.

Ordering Passengers Out of Vehicle / Heightened Caution

Street Cop Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 2, 2021 8:22

In this archive episode, Dennis talks about ordering passengers out of vehicles and the meaning of heightened caution. Recorded on 08/17/2017. State v Bacome 2017 http://law.justia.com/cases/new-jersey/supreme-court/2017/a-9-15.html?fbclid=IwAR2Zpok_sEctBhLVUZX3smxpBP3RjU6APUlt8XZtxnRNAX5pYZhN9EPvgfc (http://law.justia.com/.../supreme-court/2017/a-9-15.html) In April 2011, detectives were engaged in an undercover drug patrol in Woodbridge when they observed defendant Taiwan Bacome driving a blue Ford Bronco. S.R., the owner of the Bronco, was riding in the front passenger seat. Having previously encountered both men, detectives knew the men used and dealt narcotics. The police department had also received complaints from defendant's neighbors of a lot of traffic coming and going from [his] apartment, which, in the detectives' experience, is often indicative of narcotics activity. In their unmarked vehicle, the detectives followed the Bronco, losing sight of it shortly after arriving in an area of Newark known for crime and drug trafficking. In an attempt to pick up the Bronco's trail, the detectives drove back to Woodbridge, presuming that defendant and S.R. would return there with newly purchased drugs. About an hour later, the detectives observed the Bronco re-enter Woodbridge. The detectives resumed surveillance and, after they both observed S.R. in the passenger seat not wearing his seatbelt, they conducted a traffic stop. In this appeal, the New Jersey Supreme Court clarified the circumstances under which police officers may require a passenger in an automobile to exit a vehicle after a valid stop. The first detective reported that he saw defendant lean forward as if he were reaching under his seat and immediately ordered defendant to exit the vehicle. The second detective then ordered S.R. out of the passenger's seat. Both occupants complied. Defendant specifically challenged S.R.'s removal from the vehicle. The trial court found that defendant's reaching under the seat created the heightened caution that warranted S.R.'s removal. The Appellate Division reversed, finding the detectives failed to prove "heightened caution." The Supreme Court reversed, finding that while the heightened caution standard remained the proper test for determining the appropriateness of ordering a passenger from a car, defendant's movements inside the stopped car was an objectively reasonable basis to justify removal of the passenger. State v Brian L. Smith 1994 Although the per se rule under Mimms permits an officer to order the driver out of a vehicle incident to a lawful stop for a traffic violation, we decline to extend that per se rule to passengers. Instead, we determine that an officer must be able to point to specific and articulable facts that would warrant heightened caution to justify ordering the occupants to step out of a vehicle detained for a traffic violation.http://law.justia.com/cases/new-jersey/supreme-court/1994/a-28-93-opn.html?fbclid=IwAR29npF5cXbcyx62Hj_z1Tq_WIqj0_5rQO0d8PK3Og9Tj1W1SOvZI5C7TsU (http://law.justia.com/.../supreme.../1994/a-28-93-opn.html)
