Young Leaders in Biblical Higher Education can feel pressured to advance their institution's goals as swiftly as possible. Our guest, David Dockery, President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, is here to share wisdom gained from over forty years in the industry. His advice is to slow down, learn more about the history of your institution, create enactable plans on multi-year timeframes, and ensure that your actions align with your institution's mission. Carrying out this mission is more difficult than ever, with growing economic and cultural challenges threatening campuses, but Dockery has suggestions for how faith-based nonprofit schools should move forward into the future.Join us as we discuss: [2:08] The importance of recognizing one's own leadership gaps[14:35] The pitfalls of rushing change in a new leadership position[20:37] How the business model of biblical higher education must adaptCheck out these resources we mentioned during the podcast:IACETo hear this interview and many more like it, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website, or search for Biblical Higher Ed Talk in your favorite podcast player.Hosted by Ausha. A Young Leader's Guide to Changing the World. It's all about inspiring young people to hold onto their big dreams and take action instead of waiting for the "right time." Josh kicks things off by tackling why so many young people stop dreaming big—disillusionment and distraction. He shares how well-meaning advice from parents, teachers, and mentors often pushes kids toward "safe" career paths, causing them to abandon their passions. Add in the constant stream of media, and many end up living vicariously through others instead of pursuing their own purpose. One moment that really hit home for Josh was his daughter's kindergarten graduation, where kids boldly declared dreams of becoming pop stars, dancers, or veterinarians. Fast forward a few years, and those dreams often shrink under the weight of practicality and expectations. But Josh insists that young people are naturally wired to dream—and his book is about keeping that fire alive. At its core, What Are You Waiting For? is for those who feel stuck, cynical, or unsure about their future. Josh's message is clear: You were created for a purpose, and with faith, anything is possible. He especially wants to encourage young leaders to step up now, not later. Josh shares his own story—from growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, to moving to Australia at 16, which challenged him to grow in independence and faith. Later, at Boise Bible College, he felt called to ministry, leading to 15 years of experience as a youth pastor and eventually planting Hill City Church in Boise. The conversation also covers Hill City's evolution—from a satellite campus to an independent church, merging with an older congregation during the pandemic, and even launching a satellite campus of their own. Josh paints a vivid picture of their historic downtown Boise building, complete with stained glass and deep community roots. Josh also highlights a growing challenge: fewer young people entering church ministry. He hopes his book will be a tool for church leaders to raise up the next generation, encouraging them to step into their calling now instead of waiting for “someday.” One key idea? Young people's greatest strength can be recognizing their own weaknesses—it makes them open to learning and growth. Ultimately, Josh hopes his book will inspire at least one person to step into ministry or intentional service. He sees it as a practical guide for youth groups, internships, and mentorship programs—not just to inspire but to equip. As the episode wraps up, Josh speaks directly to young people feeling lost or discouraged. He's been there and wants them to know—God has a plan for you. Don't wait. Believe in your potential, take action, and trust that God will work through you. His final message? Hope, purpose, and the courage to step into the calling that's already yours.

Leadership is a continuous journey of self-awareness, connection, and growth. By cultivating courage, emotional intelligence, and authenticity, leaders can navigate challenges effectively and inspire their teams to reach new heights. Through active listening, thoughtful decision-making, and a focus on personal and collective improvement, leaders create environments where individuals and teams can thrive. In this episode of The Sales Gravy Podcast, Keith Lubner is joined by Markus Neukom to delve into the core qualities of impactful leadership, such as self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and authenticity. Topics include managing workplace conflicts, imposter syndrome, empowering women in leadership, and fostering a culture of trust and growth. Key Takeaways: - Courage in Leadership: Effective leaders need the courage to act on their potential without fear of success or failure. This courage often differentiates genuine leadership from insecure or arrogant behaviors. - Emotional Intelligence Development: Emotional intelligence begins with self-awareness. Leaders must understand themselves before they can effectively lead or enhance team dynamics. - Leadership as a Learned Skill: Leadership is not an innate talent but an art form that requires intentional development and refinement. - The Importance of Listening: Listening, including using all senses, is a critical skill for leaders. It fosters understanding, prevents assumptions, and enables effective conflict resolution. - Slowing Down for Effectiveness: Leaders benefit from slowing down to observe and connect with others, which ultimately leads to faster and more accurate outcomes. - The Shift Toward Authenticity: Modern leadership demands authenticity, as younger generations of employees and clients value genuine and transparent leadership styles. - Reframing Imposter Syndrome as a Sign of Growth: Imposter syndrome is a signal that you're pursuing something meaningful, despite lingering self-doubt. Recognizing it as a sign of growth can help leaders and professionals push forward with confidence and authenticity. - Challenges for Women in Leadership: Women face unique challenges, including workplace toxicity and imposter syndrome. Encouraging authenticity rather than adopting stereotypical traits is crucial for their success. - Intuition vs. Gut Feeling: Leaders are encouraged to trust their intuition, which transcends learned gut feelings and is often a more reliable guide in decision-making. - Conflict Resolution Through Coaching: Executive coaching plays a vital role in resolving workplace conflicts by emphasizing observation, asking questions, and active listening. - Self-Care Practices for Leaders: Practices like meditation and structured routines can help leaders manage stress, prevent burnout, and achieve a higher level of personal and professional effectiveness. https://youtu.be/h5OLDcbI66c Leadership thrives on self-awareness, connection, and a commitment to growth. These principles shape how leaders inspire their teams, handle challenges, and foster an environment of trust and collaboration. By focusing on key qualities like courage, emotional intelligence, and authenticity, leaders can create positive and lasting impacts in their organizations. Courage as a Foundation Courage is essential for effective leadership. It allows leaders to take risks, embrace uncertainty, and act decisively. Leaders must have the bravery to act decisively and embrace their potential without fear of success or failure. Overcoming these fears requires bravery to step out of comfort zones and pursue opportunities for growth. Courage also plays a role in admitting when help is needed or answers are unclear, which fosters an environment of honesty and collaboration. Emotional Intelligence Starts Within Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a crucial skill for understanding and managing emotions, both in oneself and in others.
