“I do feel we have an obligation to speak up,” Alexandra Stein, PhD said on this episode of Cult Conversations: The Influence Continuum, “and it's tough for people to resist these systems when there is total silence, and that's what these systems kind of rely on.” Alexandra exited a ten year stint in a left wing political cult when she was 36 years old. Alexandra is a writer and educator specializing in the social psychology of ideological extremism and other dangerous social relationships. Her latest book, Terror, Love, and Brainwashing: Attachment in Cults and Totalitarian Systems, was released as a second edition in 2021. She is also the author of Inside Out: A Memoir of Entering and Breaking Out of a Minneapolis Political Cult. She presented her statement for the Congressional Record for the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol titled Political Cults and the Use of Cultic Tactics in the Recruitment and Mobilization of Participants in the January 6 Attack on the Capitol. Based in the UK, Stein is one of a growing number of ex cult members who have become academics who wish to share their expertise with others. A Fascinating conversation. If you are mobilizing in an organization, you know the frustration that can sometimes exist when others unknowingly sabotage your mobilization efforts or at the very least, don't quite see the importance of mobilization. Today, Dave has a frank conversation with John Darnell, CEO of Global Outreach International. John unpacks his philosophy of mobilization, how to balance hitting the recruitment numbers with discipleship, and what he did to increase the mobilization culture at Global Outreach. Here's what Dave asked him: Let's talk about when you became the CEO of Global Outreach and how you had to shift things as a leader to support mobilization. How do you create healthy collaboration between departments? When it comes to the philosophies of mobilization, how do you navigate the tension that sometimes exists between mobilization recruiting and mobilization discipleship? Mobilizers can often feel pressure to hit the numbers and that can demotivate them. How do you encourage your mobilization staff to keep them motivated? You mentioned earlier to me that you have had to “push the board.” Can you explain what you mean by that and what occurred? What are you seeing change in the church and what must we do differently as we mobilize the body of Christ?

As you have probably heard in the news over the past month or so, the Trump administration has frozen foreign aid programs and essentially dismantled USAID, which is the federal government's overseas humanitarian relief agency. These decisions have had an enormous impact on the work of both faith-based and secular nonprofit organizations doing humanitarian work, including Catholic ones. Our guest today, Bill O'Keefe, is one of the top executives at Catholic Relief Services, which is the official overseas humanitarian agency of the American Catholic community. Since their founding over 80 years ago, CRS has grown to serve communities in poverty in more 100 countries around the world. Bill has served at CRS for 38 years, and today he is the agency's Executive Vice President for Mission, Mobilization and Advocacy. In addition to advocating on in Washington, DC, for robust U.S. foreign aid funding, Bill mobilizes CRS' supporters across the country in a shared mission to support the world's most vulnerable people. There is probably no single person in the country who knows as much as Bill does about how the gutting of the US government's foreign aid programs will affect the US Church's ability to help people across the globe. Host Mike Jordan Laskey found it so informative and helpful to talk to Bill. But it was also incredibly upsetting. People will die because of these decisions. The US Catholic Church's immense humanitarian network is being hollowed out. It's hard to know what we US Catholics can do in response. Bill hasn't given up hope, though, and he and his team are working hard to figure out how to keep doing their essential, life-saving work around the world. He also shared some practical ways we can all pitch in to help support the mission. This episode will equip you as a leader to address these two questions effectively with your disciples and churches.
In this conversation with the Review of Democracy, Professor Leigh Payne, Dr. Julia Zulver, and Dr. Simon Escoffierdiscuss the development of right-against-rights movements that have grown in numbers, strength, and influence in recent years in Latin America. The discussion draws on their latest book, “The Right against Rights in Latin America,” published by Oxford University Press, in which they show that newanti-rights groups are intent on blocking, rolling back, and reversing social movements' legislative advances by obstructing justice and accountability processes and influencing politicians across the region. Their book containschapters that empirically explore the breadth, depth, and diversity of a new wave of anti-rights movements. It details why they are fundamentally different from previous movements in the region, and — perhaps more importantly — why it is of vital importance that we study, analyse, and understand them in a global context, as their impact extends far beyond Latin America.Leigh A. Payne is Professor of Sociology and Latin America at the University of Oxford, St Antony's College. She worksbroadly on responses to past atrocity. Together with Gabriel Pereira and Laura Bernal Bermúdez, she has published Transitional Justice and CorporateAccountability: Deploying Archimedes' Lever (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and a follow-up edited volume on Economic Actors and the Limits of Transitional Justice (Oxford University Press, 2022). Shehas also edited with Karina Ansolabehere and Barbara FreyDisappearances in the Post-Transition Era in Latin America (Oxford University Press, 2021) and with Juan Espindola Collaboration in Authoritarian and Armed Conflict Settings (Oxford University Press, 2022).Julia Zulver is a Wallenberg Academy Fellow at the Swedish Defence University, where she researches feminist response to backlash in post-conflict settings in Latin America. She was previously a Marie Skłodowska-Curie research fellow between the Oxford School of Global and AreaStudies and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. She earned her D.Phil. in sociology at the University of Oxford in 2018, where she studied how and why organisations of women mobilise in high-risk contexts – actions that exposethem to further danger. Her book High-Risk Feminism in Colombia: Women's Mobilization in Violent Contexts was published in 2022. Her co-edited volume, Brave Women: Fighting for Justice in the 21st Century was published this February.Simón Escoffier is an assistant professor at the School of Social Work at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He is the author of the book Mobilising at the Urban Margins: Citizenship and Patronage Politics in Post-Dictatorial Chile (forthcoming, 2023). He holds a doctorate from the Sociology Department and St Antony's College at the University of Oxford. His research sits at the intersection of social movements, citizenship, urban marginality, local governance, democracy, and Latin American studies. He teaches on sociological theory, politics, and social movements.
In this episode, Canon Mark Eldredge, the Director of Anglican Revitalization Ministries, discusses the transition of the Rev. Brian Pape and the upcoming launch of a new podcast focused on developing faithful leaders. He emphasizes the importance of authentic community and lay mobilization in church growth, and the need for a plan to help new members discover their role and responsibility in the Church. The biggest threat is Chinese. It's time to disengage. Less is more now. Focus on communities. A lot of confusion will occur this year. Everyone wants to be at the inauguration. Pay attention and hold information providers accountable. Old news is an operational technique. Undersea cables are targets. MH370 is related. Google was stealing cable coms. In the end, there will be plenty of pain from all the truth bombs revealed.

Do you lead over or through? Jonathan Clark says leading through is finding leadership everywhere throughout the organization. He shares three essential elements of leadership: heart, mind, and soul. Leadership is fundamentally about doing what's right and leading through positive influence rather than coercion or authority. Jonathan believes there can be “love” in leadership – more than an idea but genuine appreciation, attention, and support for colleagues. Mobilization matters because we live among people who need hope, and believers encounter them every day. Mobilization strategies empower individuals to share their own stories of transformation, allowing seekers to explore if this "better way" they hear about is the answer they need. Ultimately, they are invited to "Go All In" (Gr. pisteuo - "faith") with Jesus.
