Jamie Wright is a writer and speaker best known for her snarky faith and lifestyle blog, Jamie the Very Worst Missionary. She recently published her first book, The Very Worst Missionary: A Memoir or Whatever. It's gorgeous, raw, hilarious, and deeply moving. If you're losing your faith, leaving a religious system that no longer works, or if you can no longer pretend that you believe what you actually do not believe, you're going to love Jamie's book and also this conversation. You can find out more about Jamie here, and you can also follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Enjoy.
Jamie Wright, author of The Very Worst Missionary, sits down with Jeff and Allen this week to discuss her new book. They talk about the failings of short term mission trips, the North American Missions Industrial Complex, being authentic, church ministry, and more. In 2007 Jamie and her husband uprooted their family from the life they knew to the unknown land of Costa Rica to be missionaries. Despite what the rhetoric of the church had taught her, being a missionary was not all it was cracked up to be. In fact, she found missions to be a broken system that perhaps does more harm that good. Jamie was ill prepared for the journey ahead of her, but was able to find her voice by taking up the moniker of The Very Worst Missionary. She started The Very Worst Missionary blog are started writing honestly about her difficulties being on the mission field. Along the way speaking out against the false pretenses that led her to a broken system. This year Jamie released her memoir (or whatever), recounting her life leading up to, and reflection on, her time in Costa Rica. If you would like to find out more about Jamie Wright you can read her blog at TheVeryWorstMissionary.com, follow her on Twitter & Instagram, like her on Facebook and of course get a copy of her book The Very Worst Missionary! On this podcast you will hear from Jamie Wright. Jamie blogs at Jamie the Very Worst Missionary, and travels widely to speak in support of groups working against human trafficking. She lives with her husband, their teenage sons, and their celebrity cat, Knives, in Northern California and is the author of a newly released book called, The Very Worst Missionary. During our time together Jamie shares about growing up as a quirky jewish kid and then finding her faith at a suburban megachurch. Years later she trades in life on the cul-de-sac to become a missionary in Costa Rica only to become disenchanted. You’ll hear honest stories and her dislike of the color beige. My guest is Jamie Wright. After finding her faith at a suburban megachurch, Jamie trades in the easy life on the cul-de-sac for the green fields of Costa Rica. There, along with her family, she earnestly hopes to serve God and change lives. But faced with a yawning culture gap and persistent shortcomings in herself and her fellow workers, she soon loses confidence in the missionary enterprise and falls into a funk of cynicism and despair. Nearly paralyzed by depression, yet still wanting to make a difference, she decides to tell the whole, disenchanted truth: Missionaries suck and our work makes no sense at all! From her sofa in Central America, she launches a renegade blog, Jamie the Very Worst Missionary, and against all odds wins a large and passionate following. Which leads her to see that maybe a "bad" missionary--awkward, doubtful, and vocal—is exactly what the world and the throngs of American do-gooders need. The Very Worst Missionary (https://www.amazon.com/Very-Worst-Missionary-Memoir-Whatever/dp/0451496531) is a disarming, ultimately inspiring spiritual memoir for well-intentioned contrarians everywhere. Special Guest: Jamie Wright.
This week’s theme is wrestling with resurrection, transformation, the ways people are changing the world and when our best intentions go awry. Amy talks about how she was considering leaving the church and Christianity completely, the ways in which she has changed over the past year, and how resurrection has manifested in her life.
