Tripp Hijacks Religion on the Mind with Dr. Dan Koch

Homebrewed Christianity Podcast

Dan Koch just finished a seven-and-a-half-year process and came out the other side a fully licensed clinical psychologist. So I did what any friend would do — took over his podcast, gave him a week off from prepping, and made him answer every question I've been saving. He did zero prep on purpose. What we got is the conversation you have with someone you've known long enough to skip the throat-clearing: what existential therapy actually gave him clinically, why permission structures are the hidden architecture of both clergy and therapy work, why he's moved from the big abstract questions toward attention and embodiment, and what it means that a psychologist with ADHD is trying to work out how attention relates to love. Plus: the oral history of the Enneagram I am definitely writing, why he'd take the drum stool for Against Me! on the White Crosses tour, and Lars Ulrich in Moscow as the runner-up. And there's a whole extra hour of this — music, movies, punk as a theology of human dignity, and the story of when Rob Bell hijacked a Homebrewed episode live. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Get the extra hour This conversation keeps going for about another hour, and the second half is the part where we stop behaving. Dan's theory of punk's irreducible amateurism as a kind of human dignity. The psychology of music project he's building — endorphins, synchronicity, mosh pits at fifteen, and what it has to do with what mainline worship gave up. Byung-Chul Han's hell of the same, and Dan cutting my doom with whole milk. Robert Eggers. The Refused frontman walking backstage before "New Noise" to tell my thirteen-year-old do you want to know why I do this? And my ongoing public campaign to get Five Iron Frenzy to play Theology Beer Camp. Join the Process This Substack at processthis.substack.com to get the full extended conversation, plus every episode ad-free, bonus content, and the classes. It's how the podcast keeps running, and it's where the good stuff lives. About our guest and his shows Dr. Dan Koch is a newly licensed clinical psychologist based in Bellingham, Washington, specializing in religious change and deconstruction, working from a cognitive-existential orientation. Before psychology, he spent a decade in an emo band and a decade as a commercial composer. He hosts Religion on the Mind (formerly You Have Permission), on psychology and religion, and Pretty Good Vibrations, his music podcast. Support his work at patreon.com/dankoch. His telehealth licensure covering 42 states is in process. JOIN OUR OPEN ONLINE CLASS: The Empire Christ Couldn't Keep Ever notice how Christian nationalism gets talked about like it's some bizarre new glitch in the faith? Do you ALSO feel the crushing need to homebrew if you want to be a good DM? Well you're not alone! While one of the best aspects of D&D is the capacity to create a world, an adventure, or even classes and spells out of pure imagination, it's also a LOT of work... but is the adventure better in the end for it? That's what Tanner discusses in this episode.

We need more venue support: A Divine Playhouse update and MoshPit Bar closes | Music News

We start this episode with a movie review (I'm sorry, what?), before providing an update on the Diving Playhouse saga we brought you two weeks ago. The TLDR is that the lease has been terminated, with thousands turning up to Hyde Park in Sydney to protest the decision. We then discuss what we can do to save our music venues from closing, with the news that MoshPit Bar will be closing in Sydney. It was one of just 19 venues in the state that put on 100 shows or more last year, so year, it's a pretty devastating blow. Its closure also raises questions over grant funding, with the venue receiving more than $150,000 in state and federal grants over the last few years, and still closing down.We pose more questions than answers in this one, but we hope you're along for the ride. Also please remember to rate us five stars if you can be bothered. Thank you

AI act controversially takes the stage in Sydney & artists head to Canberra to counter big tech lobbying | Music News

This week - for better or worse - we're up to our necks in AI stories. We kick things off with a look at a recent Eora/Sydney gig that saw music company Good Intent unintentionally book a two-thirds AI act on a bill for emerging artists. For their part, Good Intent quickly apologised, explaining the incident as an oversight. Given their remarkable record of backing (human) music from Sydney and Australia, we're inclined to back Good Intent's explanation, but the situation opens the door for plenty of interesting discussion.Next, we have a quick peak at recent data from The Atlantic that has managed to quantify just how much Aussie music has been illegally scraped by AI models. It's not surprising but grim all the same. Finally, we have yet another look at what's going on with copyright protection and AI in Canberra, as artists from across the spectrum flock to Parliament House to ensure political positions don't change. This comes in the wake of recent whistleblower reports suggesting the Government is again considering changes to copyright protections for AI use. Thanks for listening! The initiative works by offering a platform where venues and artists can offer up free or discounted tickets to shows to 18-25 year olds that have signed up. MyGigPass has been put together by the Live Music Venues Alliance with support from the NSW Government; and in its early months is seeing strong adoption from both venues and punters. We (mainly Cam, actually. Eamonn had internet issues) dive into the nuts and bolts of MyGigPass and also explore Beau Neilson's journey, including the many important roles she now holds within NSW and Australian music. Thanks for listening! The volume of "I genuinely don't know what to preach anymore" emails landing from clergy has become its own data set. Pastors are not okay. So I did the only honest thing — I outsourced your questions to the one person whose books, research, and classroom hours have been training people for exactly this moment. Leah Schade is back on Homebrewed, and she has spent the better part of a decade surveying thousands of preachers about what it actually costs to stand up on Sunday and tell the truth. We talked about fear, the unity trap, the cut-flower problem in progressive preaching, the assessment tool that turns courage into context, and the very specific reasons your sermon last week left your stomach in knots. This is the conversation I would want sitting next to me on a Saturday night when the sermon will not come and the news will not stop. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube The Rev. Heavy music listenership spiking with global uncertainty & the Aussie music market slides further in IFPI rankings | Music News

We've got a couple of interesting sets of numbers for you in this one.In this episode of the Music News, we kick things off with a look at the surge in popularity of heavy music in recent years. Attached to this data is the assertion that the state of the world is driving people back to the mosh. Correlation or causation? Moving from spike to slump, we then explore where Australia landed in the latest Global Music Report from the International Federation Of The Phonographic Industry (IFPI). This year's report saw the Aussie market slide further down global rankings; and our modest year-on-year growth makes for uncomfortable reading. We round things off with an age old Homebrewed cloud-yell: Grand Final entertainment. In a win for Australian music, Gomeroi rapper Kobie Dee has been announced as the The A League Men's Grand Final entertainment. This follows the AFL's announcement that Kylie Minogue will perform at the biggest game of their season. We dive into why this is important and where other codes have been letting us down. Today I speak with Artist and writer Dennis Valencia about the collaboration between 2 indie comic power houses with himself and Drew Lenhart creating this crossover for Homebrewed Comics- Celestial Knight vs Caspian Porter. At first glance, you'd think that this could be an extreme non-stop action filled book, but if you've read the Caspian Porter or the Celestial Knight series you'd know that their characters are purely based on the Underdog status and second chance glory making of a superhero. Caspian being an intergalactic delivery man that had the worst first day on the job ever. Celestial Knight finding constant motivation throughout his books by living a tough life. They both have non-conventional sidekicks Caspian's Robot: Curbie and Knight's Dog: Norman. All scaled into the creation of an obscure but fantastic book. This is the trilogy in the new Homebrewed Comics relaunch before they begin the homage to Image comics with Homebrewed 0.Written by Drew LenhartArt by Dennis ValenciaSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-faqs-project-hosted-by-james-grandmaster-faqs-boyce/donations
