Saturday marks the final game of the 2026 season for the United Football League. The UFL’s United Bowl III kicks off at 2PM CDT Saturday on ABC. Spring professional football’s championship game will take place in Washington, DC at Audi Stadium.  The hometown DC Defenders (7-4) defend their 2025 UFL title against the upstart expansion Louisville Kings (also 7-4). Abundant sunshine and a steamy 90 degrees will greet the players and fans at Saturday’s championship game to end the UFL’s third season. There will likely be a good crowd of more than 15,000 in the stands (the stadium holds 20,000) and a television audience of more than 1 million watching on ABC. At some point soon, the UFL owners will meet to review the season and make decisions about the future. Let’s give a preview of what I think that meeting will entail. A review of the 2026 UFL season – the OK, the “Meh”, and the downright ugly The third year for any new business should show its owners that the venture is making positive strides.  If the business is not already profitable, the annual losses should be getting smaller by the year as the business gains favor with the buying public. For the UFL, those primary measures are home team attendance (and revenues) and national television ratings. Let’s start with the Ugly. Home attendance dropped again in 2026 Each of the eight UFL teams played five home games in the 10-game regular season. The St. Louis Battlehawks (playing in a 60,000 domed football stadium) drew more than 23,000 per game to lead the UFL in home attendance once again in 2026.  Despite the positive attendance, the cost for the lease at the Dome at America’s Center (formerly known as the Edward Jones Dome) in St. Louis is also likely the highest paid by the UFL. The expansion Louisville Kings came in second with more than 11,000 fans per home opener. Another expansion franchise, the Columbus Aviators finished third with 10,362 paying customers per home game in 2026. The other five UFL franchises failed to average 10,000 fans per game with the two Texas teams (Dallas and Houston) coming in last with 6,185 and 5,683 per game respectively. Birmingham (which plays in UAB’s home football stadium) and St. Louis played their home games in traditional football stadiums. The other six UFL franchises played the 2026 season in smaller soccer venues.  Lease costs for these soccer stadiums are lower than the cost of most traditional football stadiums.  Home television viewers are less likely to be turned-off by seeing small crowds if played in a 20,000 seat soccer stadium. The UFL home team attendance figures have declined in each of the league’s three seasons. The 2024 season produced an average of 12,800 fans. In 2025, the UFL dropped to 12,168 per game. This year’s 10,500 average marked a 14% decline from 2025. Ouch. It means that the public (even with affordable ticket prices of $20-30 available) simply is not very excited about the UFL’s on-field product. Now for the “Meh” – Television ratings in 2026 were relatively flat vs. 2025 I remember reading an article a few years ago which claimed that the UFL needed to draw more than one million television viewers per game in order to have a chance to turn a profit. Well, that didn’t happen again this year, either. The Friday night prime time game on FOX produced consistent numbers. The ratings showed a reliable audience of 600-700,000 viewers on Friday nights during the 7PM to 10PM Central time period. That may sound good until you know the rest of the story.  The FOX Friday night audience for UFL games was mired in last place all season when compared to programming on competitors CBS, NBC, and ABC. FOX Sports (a part-owner of the UFL) cannot be pleased with their investment after three seasons. Ditto for Disney’s ESPN brand. The sports giant also owns a piece of the UFL.  They televised one or more weekly UFL games via ESPN and/or corporate affiliate, ABC. The 2026 ratings for the Saturday and Sunday UFL games on ABC continue to show the highest viewership.  At least four regular season games on ABC topped the one million mark during the first nine weeks of the UFL season. That meant only 11% of the first nine weeks of UFL games in 2026 produced a television audience of one million or more. If the league’s original goal was to reach one million viewers per televised game, the UFL continues to fall woefully short of that target. The “OK” – the spring football league continues to innovate and try harder UFL ownership includes the aforementioned FOX Sports and ESPN along with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, his ex-wife Dany Garcia, Redbird Capital Partners, and billionaire Mike Repole. Repole bought his way into the UFL following the 2025 season.  His ownership percentage and who he purchased it from have yet to be disclosed. It has been new owner Mike Repole who pushed to move UFL teams into smaller soccer venues in 2026. He also gave the green light to relocate UFL franchises away from San Antonio, Memphis, and Detroit in favor of Columbus (OH), Louisville, and Orlando for this season. Those three non-NFL cities produced slightly improved attendance figures and saved money with significantly lower lease costs.  However, none of the three teams turned a profit based on their gate receipts. Despite his personal energy, Mike Repole’s promotional skills and tinkering with the UFL simply hasn’t paid off.  League attendance went down in 2026 while television ratings were flat. The effort is commendable. The UFL’s massive annual losses, though, continue. What should the UFL owners do at their next meeting following the 2026 season? Let’s make an assumption that the UFL loses (just my guess here) $50 million in 2026.  That would mark the third consecutive year of significant losses for the latest spring football experiment. Non-corporate UFL owners such as Dwayne Johnson and his ex-wife, Dany Garcia, should be ready to exit as owners by now. They cannot be pleased with losing millions of their own money every year.  The cash losses by the UFL show no sign of abatement should the league continue into 2027.  Johnson and Garcia lost big bucks with the XFL, too.  They have now been losing even more money with the UFL for three seasons. Why should they stick around? Redbird Capital Partners might fly away at the next owner’s meeting, too. The private equity investor claims over $10 billion in managed assets.  Redbird’s website currently displays the UFL as one of 36 different major investments for the company.  The UFL’s continuing annual losses are a negative.  Don’t be surprised if they, too, wish to move on at the next UFL owners meeting. FOX Sports may have a different perspective on the UFL. The NFL on FOX could end within the next five years at the end of the network’s latest contract. FOX Sports could, perhaps, envision the UFL becoming a potential future fall competitor for the NFL.  The fledgling American Football League of the 1960’s did it.  However, it took ten years for the NFL to eventually gobble-up their competitor. Let’s say that I’m wrong about FOX Sports’ long-term thinking on the UFL.  They really don’t need the UFL for programming and might be ready to pull the plug at the next owners meeting. How are ESPN and ABC feeling about the UFL right now? Mounting annual losses by the UFL are (effectively) petty cash for Disney.  The current spring positioning of the UFL season fills a major weekend programming need for ESPN and ABC.  There aren’t a lot of major sports events available to fill air time on ESPN from April through June. An important item to remember is that the NFL sold its NFL Network to ESPN earlier in 2026 in return for a 10% ownership stake in ESPN.  ESPN and ABC must now seriously consider doing whatever the NFL wants with respect to the UFL.  They could vote to stick with the UFL or decide to shut it down for good this summer. That leaves the enthusiastic billionaire UFL investor Mike Repole. Repole jumped into the UFL dumpster fire with both feet last year.  Most billionaires get rich by being very shrewd in business. I suspect that Mike Repole (if he sticks around for another year or more) sees the UFL eventually becoming a partner with the NFL down the road.  He appears to be a risk-taker willing to swing for the fences. Should the NFL ever decide to invest in the UFL as a spring football partner, Mike Repole’s investment gamble could pay off handsomely. Than again, the NFL has plenty of its own billionaire owners, too.  Their luxury cruise liner isn’t likely to throw a life preserver to Mike Repole or any of his other UFL ownership partners anytime soon. The UFL’s third year financial condition reminds me of a 1977 Harry Chapin song. “The Dance Band on the Titanic” featured some rather clever lyrics and an upbeat melody.  In the musical version, the ship’s band was trying to create a musical diversion just as the massive boat began to sink. One line of the song says,“The iceberg’s on the starboard bow – Won’t you dance with me?” This next meeting of the UFL owners is likely to be a dandy. They question the lack of Black stand-up representation compared to figures like Katt Williams and Sheryl Underwood, react to Michael Che's viral take on how different communities approach roasting, and dissect why certain jokes—especially the George Floyd reference—landed as tone-deaf instead of funny. They then shift into a detailed review of Drake's Iceman album, comparing it to his earlier work and debating whether the project shows growth or creative stagnation. The discussion touches on Kendrick Lamar's lingering presence in Drake's lyrics, critiques of repetitive songwriting, and the broader issue of bloated album releases, with comparisons to The Mandalorian's decline and a “Temu album” critique that perfectly captures the project's inconsistency. Along the way, they also analyze Drake's use of Michael Jackson imagery in the album rollout and question whether the execution matches the ambition behind it.

The 2026 United Football League (UFL) spring football campaign passed the halfway point recently. Through six weeks of the league’s ten-game regular season, each UFL team is now on a similar path.  The eight spring football franchises are experiencing a decline in attendance at the midway point of the 2026 season. The UFL replaced teams in San Antonio, Detroit (Michigan Panthers), and Memphis this year. Those franchises were relocated to Louisville (Kings), Columbus (Aviators) and Orlando (Storm). A primary reason for leaving San Antonio, Detroit, and Memphis was that all three teams played in large traditional football stadiums.  Those facilities cost the UFL a lot of money to lease. Small crowds of 10,000 fans or less for games played in 50,000 seat facilities looked really bad on national television, too. This new trio of UFL teams is playing their home games in soccer stadiums with seating generally less than 20,000.  The optics showing a crowd of 10,000 inside of a smaller football venue looks more visually appealing to home television viewers. Let’s count that as a win for the UFL.  However… The average attendance for those three new UFL franchises isn’t exactly turning heads, either. Through game 6, the entire league is averaging a little bit more than 10,000 fans per football home game.  Half of the UFL franchises (Houston, Dallas, defending champion DC, and Orlando) still can’t pull more than 10,000 per outing to their games. St. Louis (which led the league in attendance in each of the UFL’s first two seasons) is averaging 25,700 per game to lead the league in 2026. Below is a chart showing the attendance for each UFL team through Game 6 last weekend. Ticket prices for UFL games across the league are relatively cheap You can buy a 20-yard line ticket to this Saturday night’s Birmingham Stallions home game against the Dallas Renegades for $15 and receive a free t-shirt, too! Let’s say that the average ticket price in Birmingham was $25.  If the Stallions attract a crowd of 15,000 to this Saturday night’s game, that translates into ticket revenue of $375,000 for the week. Over a five game home schedule, Birmingham would generate $1.85 million in ticket revenue. With a roster of 50 players making an average of $60,000 per season, the personnel cost for the Stallions is $3 million.  Let’s also estimate that total expenses for the Birmingham UFL franchise (lease payments, coaching salaries, travel, game day costs and administrative expenses) are (conservatively) another $3 million. Now, multiply that revenue shortfall by eight UFL franchises.  The numbers simply don’t work. What about the television ratings for the UFL? The television ratings for UFL games compared to the NFL are similar to upstart LIV Golf when compared to the PGA Tour. UFL spring football brings about 5% of the average number of weekly television viewers which the NFL attracts for its games in the fall. Television ratings in 2026 for the UFL have been difficult to quantify week-to-week.  In general, the four weekly televised games have settled into a predictable pattern. FOX (one of the minority owners of the UFL) is into Year #2 of providing a Friday night prime-time football game.  The six Friday night games in 2026 have averaged 638,000 viewers. For Friday, May 3, the UFL spring football game on FOX (which attracted 670,000 viewers) finished in dead last behind primary competitors CBS, ABC, and NBC. The CBS Friday night line-up averaged over 4 million viewers.  ABC attracted less than three million.  NBC (which featured horse racing from Churchill Downs) came in at less than 2 ½ million last Friday night. FOX cannot be pleased about getting curb-stomped in the TV ratings every Friday night for two straight years.  The network’s Friday night UFL spring football games have been unable to crack the one million viewer mark one single time in two years. A recent week of prime-time television ratings showed the FOX Friday Night UFL game finishing in 162nd place. In addition to trailing the four primary networks, the FOX Friday UFL game lagged behind top cable television offering on Fox News, ESPN, MSNow, TLC, HGTV, TBS, USA Network, Comedy Central, ESPN2, Food Network, Bravo, Hallmark, CNN, Discovery, History, and A&E. That stinks. ABC’s Saturday afternoon UFL games have shown the strongest viewer interest.  Last week’s Dallas Renegades at DC Defenders drew the league’s highest television audience of the season as 1,050,000 watched the game on Saturday afternoon, May 2. The television networks need the UFL to consistently attract more than one million weekly viewers Advertisers want their product to be seen by the greatest number of people in their desired demographic.  Football traditionally delivers a predominantly male buying audience and is highly coveted by certain advertisers. UFL games are shown on the “big” networks like ABC, FOX, and ESPN. That means that there are zero excuses why football fans are not finding and watching the games.  It is proof that most viewers simply aren’t interested in the product. Has the UFL been targeting the growing online gambling market to stay afloat? Like it or not, online sports gambling has been growing quickly.  Unfortunately, many college students are becoming increasingly involved with online gambling. The UFL football games (especially those shown every Friday night in the spring) represent “the only game in town” for some bettors seeking football-oriented gambling opportunities. It’s impossible to know whether the UFL or the owners of online gambling companies are actively pursuing younger audiences to wager on UFL spring football games. The lack of growth in the UFL’s television audience from year-to-year seems to indicate that the gambling factions are not having a sizable effect. Who is Mike Repole, and why has he become “Mr. UFL?” The first two seasons of the UFL were financially underwritten by an ownership team of FOX Sports (50%) along with wrestling/media star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, his ex-wife Dani Garcia, ESPN, and RedBird Capital Partners. The original set of owners has lost tens of millions of their own money during the first two UFL seasons. Last summer, billionaire entrepreneur/promoter Mike Repole became a partner in the UFL, too. He purchased an undisclosed interest after the 2025 season ended. Repole quickly jumped-in trying to remake the league with several of his own ideas. The enthusiastic Mike Repole is about as subtle as the Kool-Aid guy bursting through the wall. He has already told Oklahoma City that they will be granted a UFL franchise in 2028 once the city’s new soccer stadium is completed.  Repole wants the spring football league to double in size to 16 teams within the next few years. It was Mike Repole’s idea to move three franchises to Columbus, Louisville, and Orlando this season.  He also spearheaded the UFL’s move into smaller soccer venues in 2026 to save cash and look better on television. The 57-year old Mike Repole has also jousted with fans of the 2024 UFL league champion Birmingham Stallions franchise, too.  He let it be known that the Alabama-based franchise would be moved if local supporters didn’t show significant improvements in game attendance this season. (Note – the Stallions are #2 in UFL average attendance entering Week #7) Yes, Mike Repole has been a virtual one-man crusader for the UFL over the past year. Try as he might, the vital signs for his beloved UFL in 2026 are still the same. The UFL remains on life support Only the deep pockets of the UFL’s investors has kept this patient from an expected death. Let’s forget about the size of the football stadiums.  When only 10,000 paying fans show up to watch any professional sport with massive fixed costs like football, the sports league is going to lose tons of money and eventually cease to exist. Perhaps the UFL has been hoping to attract some type of life preserver from the National Football League.  It’s not that the NFL couldn’t have invested in the UFL from Day 1, though. It simply chose not to.  The NFL has watched any number of spring pro football leagues come and go.  That’s because football fans aren’t interested in the product. The NFL wisely understood that they “own” the fall sports calendar. NFL franchise owners want football fans to be salivating in anticipation of the league’s return every year. Remember that the NFL has already been through this with the American Football League back in the 1960’s. Once the AFL achieved significant momentum with football fans and grew its television ratings, the NFL purchased their youthful competitor to end the challenge. The UFL’s presentation on the field and for home television has been exceptional.   Games (though still a bit too low-scoring for me) are often entertaining to watch. I will award the UFL an “A” for effort. This spring football league and several others have tried mightily to get their product to take root.  Football fans simply have not reciprocated with an endearing love for spring pro football. The UFL’s owners have every right to lose as much money as they desire hoping that their football league will eventually gain traction with the public. When and if that ever should happen, the NFL is likely to respond. The post UFL Midseason Report – Still on Shaky Ground appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.

Kairi Sane's release is the hardest one to explain. She was active on television, coming off a singles win over IYO SKY on the April 13 Raw, and appeared to be headed toward a bigger story with Asuka. IYO SKY called the timing unexpected, Bayley said she was struggling to process it, and Kairi thanked fans while saying she would "set sail… in my own time." Aleister Black's exit raises similar questions after wins over Randy Orton, Sami Zayn, and Matt Cardona. These did not feel like talents being phased out creatively. They felt like cuts made while stories were still moving. The Wyatt Sicks were also wiped out, with Nikki Cross, Joe Gacy, Dexter Lumis, Erik Rowan, and Bo Dallas all released. Nikki Cross later called her time as Abby the Witch "the honour of a lifetime," tying the group back to Bray Wyatt, Brodie Lee, the Windham family, the Huber family, and the Fireflies who kept that world alive. The locker room reaction showed how heavy the day was. Alexa Bliss honored Nikki Cross and the Wyatt Sicks. Rhea Ripley called it a sad day. Chelsea Green and Piper Niven praised Alba Fyre. Asuka, Bayley, and IYO SKY supported Kairi Sane. Nathan Frazer gave a heartfelt tribute to Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin, crediting the Motor City Machine Guns for helping him during his first year on the main roster. At the same time, WWE is pushing new names forward. Ricky Saints is set for his SmackDown debut next week in Tulsa after one final NXT match against Shiloh Hill. Ethan Page and Sol Ruca already arrived on Raw, while Joe Hendry is set for his official Raw debut with a concert. SmackDown also got a jolt from Fatal Attraction, as Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley, and Lainey Reid attacked Paige, Brie Bella, Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Flair, and Rhea Ripley. Blake Monroe is also headed to the blue brand after a vignette for "The Glamour," bringing her résumé as Mariah May, Owen Hart Cup winner, former AEW Women's World Champion, and former NXT Women's North American Champion with her. Cody Rhodes used SmackDown to send a pointed message beyond Randy Orton. Still showing the effects of Orton's punt, Cody called out the "outside forces" affecting his WrestleMania path, saying they are "0-3" and telling them to send their best or stay out of his business. The line appears aimed at TKO influence and connects to past WrestleMania shifts involving Roman Reigns, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and John Cena. Tiffany Stratton also turned a missed WrestleMania into momentum, defeating Giulia to win the WWE Women's United States Championship. The win ended Giulia's 112 day reign and gave Stratton her third singles title in WWE. In her interview with Joey Karni, Stratton said missing WrestleMania gave her a chip on her shoulder, and she is determined to make sure it never happens again. Outside WWE, Lucha Underground suddenly resurfaced after years of silence with a "¿Más?" teaser and the caption "soon." Taya Valkyrie, Willie Mack, Ivelisse, Vinnie Massaro, The Butcher, AJ Francis, Shelly Martinez, Chelsea Green, and Brian Cage all reacted, with speculation already pointing to anything from a YouTube library rollout to something bigger. AAA is also teasing a shift of its own. Marisela Peña Roldán confirmed that a new general manager will be revealed on May 23 in Mexico City after Dorian Roldán asked for the role. She made it clear that nothing in AAA will remain the same once the new GM is announced. Episode 183 is about transition everywhere. WWE is cutting major names while elevating new ones. Cody Rhodes is calling out the power above the ring. Tiffany Stratton is forcing her way back into focus. Lucha Underground is stirring again. AAA is preparing a reset. The whole landscape feels like it is moving at once. Be sure to support the show and follow us @TurnbuckleTavern. Until next week, stay out of the alley and away from the pork and beans. Good luck and good speed.

Ready or not, UFL Spring Football returns this Weekend

Ah, yes.  Springtime means the return of your favorite eight United Football League (UFL) spring football teams for a third consecutive season. Except for the San Antonio Brahmas, Michigan Panthers, and Memphis Showboats, that is! Those three UFL teams were vaporized last summer to become a part of league history. The UFL moving trucks have been busy during the off-season United Football League team locations in San Antonio, Detroit, and Memphis were replaced with new franchises in the states of Florida, Ohio, and Kentucky. The Orlando Storm, Columbus Aviators, and Louisville Kings will join the Birmingham Stallions, DC Defenders, Houston Gamblers, and St. Louis Battlehawks in 2026. In addition, the former Arlington Renegades moved across town to morph into the Dallas Renegades.  But even the name “Dallas” is a bit misleading.  The Renegades will play this season in Toyota Stadium – a 24,000 seat soccer stadium in fast-growing Frisco.  That city is 25 miles north of downtown Dallas. The UFL has smartly downsized its stadiums and cut more costs this season. All eight UFL teams still practice at the same facility in Arlington, Texas on weekdays and then fly to play games on weekends in each team’s respective home market. All but two of the eight spring football franchises will play in smaller soccer venues beginning this season.  The new stadiums generally have a seating capacity of no more than 25,000. The Houston Gamblers vamoosed from the 40,000 seat football stadium at the University of Houston in favor of a more “right sized” environment at the downtown home of the Houston Dynamo soccer franchise. Wisely, the UFL owners have learned that the optics of showing thousands of empty seats on nationally televised football games is a very bad look for TV.  The high costs of leasing a traditional football stadium was another big factor in making that switch, too. The St. Louis Battlehawks (which led the UFL in home attendance with more than 30,000 fans per home game) will continue to play in the 60,000 seat Dome at America’s Center. Locally known as the “BattleDome”, the indoor football stadium was the former home of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams prior to the team moving to Los Angeles. Birmingham will continue to play in UAB’s state of the art 47,000 seat football stadium.  The league smartly cordoned off the upper deck last season, so the actual seating capacity for Stallions home games is about 25,000. When is the first UFL football game this year? The 2026 UFL season picked a bad time to get started (again).   This weekend’s season openers will have stiff competition from the men’s and women’s NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament. Game #1 of the new UFL season is this Friday night (March 27) at 7PM CDT on FOX. The Birmingham Stallions visit Kentucky to play in the first-ever home game for the Louisville Kings. Saturday, March 28 will feature an afternoon doubleheader.  The opening game will start at 11AM CDT on ESPN as 2025 champion DC Defenders invade the St. Louis Battlehawks.  The second game (3PM CDT on FOX) has the Houston Gamblers riding up I-45 to play their intrastate rival, the Dallas Renegades. Sunday’s final opening weekend game will pit two new entries taking the field for the first time. The Columbus Aviators take flight to central Florida to play the Orlando Storm at 7PM CDT on ESPN. The UFL added a giant source of cash as billionaire Mike Repole joined the ownership team Who is Mike Repole, you ask? If you have heard of beverage brands such as VitaminWater and BodyArmor, it was entrepreneur Mike Repole who built and sold those companies to Coca-Cola for a cool $12 billion. That means that the UFL just added another financial partner with deep pockets.  Mike Repole is about to learn that the UFL and every other prior spring football iteration has been a gigantic money pit. Last season’s UFL was owned by former WWE wrestling legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his ex-wife Dany Garcia along with Fox Sports, Disney (ESPN), and private equity investor Redbird Capital Partners. The privately-held United Football League is not required to publish annual financial reports.  They are quite tight-lipped about the league’s finances. It’s not a secret that the UFL has posted annual losses into the tens of millions of dollars. A lot of cash is required to pay stadium leases, players, and other significant costs One source reported that Ford Field in Detroit (former home to the now-deceased Michigan Panthers franchise) cost the league $500,000 per home game. That’s a cool $2.5 million per season for just one stadium’s rental fees. Last year’s Michigan Panthers averaged less than 12,000 fans per home game.  Their average ticket price in 2025 was about $25.  That generated about $300,000 in ticket revenue per home game for a season-ending total of about $1.5 million. Ouch. But wait, there’s more. Each team had 45 active players on the roster in 2025.  The average salary per player was about $60,000.  That’s another $2.7 million per team – just for the player salaries. Coaches are another significant expense.  Even relatively unknown coaches will cost a UFL team about $1 million annually. Don’t forget the cost of insurance, transportation costs to and from the games, practice facilities, home office costs, and a lot more. Yes, the UFL is losing money with every game they play Television advertising is the largest revenue source for the UFL. However, the television ratings in 2025 dipped 20% below 2024’s mediocre numbers.  The UFL’s average weekly television audience last season was less than 800,000 viewers per game.  Even the league’s title game failed to attract more than one million television viewers. Until the UFL can capture and sustain at least one million television viewers per game, the league’s television revenues will be insufficient to cover the costs of operations. The UFL receives a set amount from its television partners (ESPN and FOX Sports).  In return, the networks pay for the production costs of each telecast.  They also retain the vast majority of the revenue generated from ads sold within each football game. The more home viewers tune-in to watch UFL games, the more money the networks will be able charge to advertisers.  The UFL must produce results for the networks this season.  It’s that simple. The UFL’s costs of operations seem relatively fixed.  The league can improve its financial picture by growing additional home stadium revenues (higher attendance and/or higher ticket prices).  Revenues from annual television fees will become more significant once home viewership grows by 50% over the puny 2025 TV ratings. That’s why new investor Mike Repole’s billion dollar checkbook is so important to the UFL this year. The other owners are, most likely, tapped-out. What’s new in the UFL for this season? Aside from my rather gloomy financial comments, the on-field product for the United Football League will feature some rather interesting innovations this spring. A 4-point field goal is coming! If your kicker can somehow clear the crossbar from 60 yards or more, a field goal will be worth four points in the UFL.  This new 4-point field goal option sounds good, until you realize that a missed attempt will hand the football over to the opposing team near midfield. Pass receivers need only one foot in-bounds for a legal catch! This is the same rule being used in college football.  The UFL felt like the NFL’s “both feet must be in bounds” rule was also a little bit dangerous for wide receivers. Another reason for the “one foot in-bounds” change by the UFL is get teams to score more points. The UFL has struggled with relatively low scoring games during its first two seasons.  Teams which first reach the 20 point mark generally win most UFL spring football games. No “tush push” in the UFL! This should have been outlawed by the NFL, too.  My personal thanks to the UFL for getting rid of this rather odd-looking and often dangerous play where the quarterback is shoved by his own players for a first down or into the end zone. No punts allowed from inside the 50-yard line This is yet another attempt to improve overall scoring in the UFL.  Today’s punters have become quite proficient at landing the football inside of the opponent’s ten yard line.  Statistically speaking, most offenses do not move the football 90 yards downfield for a touchdown or even a field goal after being pinned near their own goal line to start a drive. Summary: UFL televised games will be shown on FOX, FS1, ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 again this season. There is a ten game regular season beginning this Friday, March 27 and ending on Sunday, May 31.  There are two semifinal playoff games on Sunday, June 7.  The league championship game will be played on Saturday, June 13 with kick-off at 2PM CDT on ABC. New UFL financial backer Mike Repole is pushing hard to make the spring football league more fan-friendly this season. He said, “The UFL exists to innovate.  If we’re not making the game more exciting and fan-focused, we’re not doing our job.” As usual, I will track the attendance at UFL home games in addition to the television ratings this season.  Both measures must improve by 15% or more, or you could be watching the final season of UFL spring football unfold over the next 2 ½ months. The Monday Wars were in full effect and WWE was arguably winning. WCW tried something new, something they hadn't done yet, a film - Ready to Rumble. Maybe it was because the heart and soul of TNT was Ted Turner and he had sold the company a few years prior to the start of the production. In the movie 1973 film Walking Tall, Sheriff Buford Pusser is a heroic law enforcement officer in small-town Tennessee whose fight against the Dixie Mafia leads to an ambush and shooting that left his beloved wife Pauline dead. The movie and its sequels and remakes made Pusser, who died in a 1974 car crash, into a folk hero. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson played him in the 2004 Walking Tall remake. The Pusser legend became a cottage industry for Adamsville, Tennessee, where the Buford Pusser Home and Museum is based. Mike Elam, a former law enforcement officer, started researching Pusser's life as a hobby back in the 1970s. Once the internet became an avenue for exploration, "I started a social media page and I was very much a fan of Buford Pusser at that time," Pusser tells Modern Law Library host Lee Rawles. "And it was one of those things where I got to researching it and learned far too much for my own liking, because I did not like the man I saw as opposed to the one that was in the movie." Elam's decades of research and interviews with people who had encountered Pusser led to a book, Buford Pusser: The Other Story. It also led to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations reopening the case into Pauline Pusser's murder and exhuming her body. In 2025, they announced that the investigation revealed details that pointed to one suspect: Buford Pusser himself. In this episode, Elam discusses his long investigation, tips for other true crime citizen detectives, what he thinks now about the way Buford Pusser has been memorialized–and how he found the gun that killed Pauline.  Subscribe to Modern Law Library: https://play.megaphone.fm/93wtgxnatpsubsdxwklzwq Learn more about your ad choices. There were two girls over there. They didn't know each other, but they were in there, each [of their] mothers had committed suicide. A new lawsuit has dropped a massive bombshell, alleging that Riley Keough is actually the biological mother of John Travolta and Kelly Preston's youngest son, Ben. AND FINALLYHollywood's Biggest Faceplants: The 10 Most Disappointing Flops of 20252025 had its hits, but let's be honest—it was also a year where some massive blockbusters crashed and burned. From superhero fatigue to Oscar-bait that nobody bit on, here's a look at the ten movies that just couldn't get audiences into seats this year. 1. Thunderboltsa. Marvel is definitely feeling the pain. While this movie made nearly $400 million, that's peanuts compared to the glory days of Avengers: Endgame. It suffered from the same problem as Captain America: Brave New World: it just felt like reheated leftovers from a saga that ended years ago. Aside from Superman, it looks like superhero fatigue has officially set in. 1. Snow Whitea. This was the exception to the rule that Disney remakes print money. It didn't even make back its budget. The movie had an identity crisis—trying to be both a classic recreation and a subversive twist—but the real killer was the PR nightmare. Between the casting controversies and political debates, the movie was "covered in mud" before it even hit theaters. 1. Mickey 17a. Everyone was dying to see what director Bong Joon Ho would do after Parasite. The problem? We waited too long. After endless delays, the hype died. When it finally dropped in February, reviews called it "toothless" and confused. Even Robert Pattinson couldn't save this sci-fi epic from being a disappointment. 1. After the Hunta. You'd think Julia Roberts and the director of Call Me by Your Name would be a slam dunk. Nope. It made less than $10 million globally (which is like, half of Roberts' salary). The movie was too long, too rambling, and felt more like a streaming series than a cinema event. 1. Christya. Sydney Sweeney is everywhere, but apparently, that doesn't guarantee box office sales. Her boxing biopic had one of the worst opening weekends ever for a wide release. It seems social media fame doesn't always translate to ticket sales. Sweeney defended it, saying she made it for "impact," not numbers, which is good, because the numbers were bad. 1. I Know What You Did Last Summera. Studios thought they could pull a Scream with this 90s revival. The issue? People actually love Scream. Nobody really cares about "The Fisherman" or the original 1997 film enough to show up for a legacy sequel. 1. Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowherea. Jeremy Allen White played The Boss, but audiences didn't show up. Why? Because the movie focused on a depressing, quiet period of Bruce Springsteen's life where he moped around a bedroom recording acoustic tracks. People wanted the stadium anthems and energy, not the gloom. 1. Elio a. Pixar had a huge win with Inside Out 2, but Elio brought them back down to earth. The original director left mid-production, and the final product felt like a movie with no reason to exist. It was hard to explain the plot, and audiences just didn't connect with the aliens. 1. M3GAN 2.0a. The first M3GAN was a viral hit because it was campy, slasher fun. The sequel failed because it tried to pivot into a sprawling, geopolitical action thriller. The producers admitted they overthought it—they should have just given the people more of the killer doll they loved. 1. The Smashing Machinea. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson really wants an Oscar. He teamed up with Emily Blunt and an indie director for this gritty MMA drama. But here's the thing: nobody goes to a Rock movie to be depressed. It was a bleak story about addiction, and audiences preferred to stay home.
