Through scripture, science, and personal reflection, Curt invites us to embrace vulnerability as a path to wholeness, transforming our pain into connection. In this episode, you'll hear Curt discuss: The Science of Suffering: How our brains are wired for healing through meaningful relationships, not just enduring pain alone. The Role of Connection in Resilience: How authentic connections with others can help us navigate suffering, rewire our minds, and deepen our hope. Scriptural Insights on Suffering and Hope: Exploring Paul's reflections in Romans 5 and how suffering can produce perseverance, character, and hope in the Christian journey. Today, our special guest is Dr. Joy Skarka, who is on the Authentic Intimacy Team. She has been doing that since 2020 and she has built there a transformational ministry for women dealing with sexual shame and pornography. So welcome, Joy. We are so delighted that you were able to join us. Joy >> Oh, thank you, Kay. I just love the resources that you're creating, and I'm glad to be here. Kay >> Oh, thank you so much. Joy previously has joined us for a podcast and video on rape culture. So if you missed that, you might want to look back for that. Today, though, we are talking about caring for women struggling with porn. And Joy actually has a book coming out about that. It is going to be called Her Freedom Journey: A Guide Out of Porn and Shame to Authentic Intimacy. When does that book come out, Joy? Joy >> Yes, this July, July 2024. How come, Kay, we always get the hard topics on these podcasts, right? Kay >> Yes. Joy >> These are some hard topics that we're covering. Kay >> It really is. And I really wanted to start really by talking about how in the world you got involved in ministering to women who struggle with porn. Joy >> Right. It's not something people normally raise their hand and volunteer and say, hey, I want to talk about porn and helping women. Joy >> You don't see a lot of women talking about it. So I'd love to just share a little bit of my story. And I think to sum it all up, God, took my pain point and made it my passion. He really just brought me to this place where I just had this burning desire to help other women because I couldn't find that help. And so flash back, I was in college and I had just experienced a date rape, which is kind of why we talked about rape culture on the last episode. So this is a follow up to my story there. But I had experienced that trauma and I lacked a sex education, so I had no idea kind of what had happened, what was going on. And so that brought me to Google, which is a bad sex educator. And I started typing in my questions, and that's what led me to pornography.

The Burden of Living and the Goodness of God with Alan NobleWe don't often talk about the courage required to face ordinary life. Such common human challenges as sorrow, despair, anxiety, and mental illness may cause us to experience life more as a burden than a gift. For many, this struggle is a constant one.In his new book, On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden & Gift of Living, author and professor Alan Noble considers the challenges that face each one of us every morning. He concludes that the simple decision to engage with the world each day constitutes a declaration of the goodness of God.“One of the things I want to remind people of is that actually just by choosing to go through the basic motions of life, you are affirming to other people that this life is good.“And just putting your feet on the ground and getting up despite the suffering you might be experiencing, communicates to other people that this life is worth living even when you are suffering. And that's a powerful witness.”Bearing witness and Carrying Each OtherAs Alan so eloquently makes the case, our call to faithfulness is not a solo journey. When we persevere despite our suffering, we communicate that God's creation is good, and it's an encouragement to others. It's by carrying and being carried by others that the pilgrim can make it home.“Now, there may come times when you are required by your suffering to radically depend upon others to carry you out of bed. My advice is to embrace those moments, knowing that you'll carry your neighbor in return when the time comes.”We hope you'll enjoy this conversation and share it with your community. This podcast is an edited version of an Online Conversation with Alan recorded in April of 2023. When John Starke, an author and the pastor of Apostles Church Uptown, moved to New York City, he quickly realized that he wasn't all that impressive to his neighbors. It didn't feel great at first. But now, he sees the ability to embody seasons of being unimpressive—even being embarrassed and humiliated—as a gift. On this episode of The Russell Moore Show, Moore and Starke talk about perseverance, suffering, and the power of Jesus' presence. They discuss the temptation to be performative in ministry, how to embrace our limitations, and what it looks like to heal shame. Starke shares rhythms and practices for growing in understanding ourselves as hidden in Christ, which he writes about in his new book The Secret Place of Thunder. Moore and Starke's conversation also includes reflections on their mutual friend, Tim Keller, who passed away recently. Tune in for an episode that looks thoughtfully at the human heart, the character of God, and the encouragement in Scripture to live as those hidden in Christ. Joining us today as we continue in our Mental Health Awareness Series is a renowned psychiatrist and true friend of us here at the American Association of Christian Counselors, Dr. Curt Thompson! Inspired by deep compassion for others and informed from a Christian perspective, Dr. Curt loves sharing fresh insights and practical applications for developing more authentic relationships and fully experiencing our deepest longing: to be known. However, we unfortunately live in a culture and society that equates brokenness with embarrassment and humiliation. Although this could not be further from the truth, this lie promotes a sense of hiddenness within many that when left unexplored can form into what I believe is one of the main things that prohibits us from allowing ourselves to be fully seen and known which is that of SHAME. Today, Dr. Curt is going to take us on a journey of better understanding the soul of shame and what can happen when shame takes root in our hearts and minds… With the use of a considerable dose of warmth and humor, coupled together with an understanding of interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB) and a Christian view of what it means to be human — Dr. Curt educates and encourages us to seek to fulfill our intrinsic desire to feel known, valued and connected. He understands that deep, authentic relationships are essential to experiencing a healthier, more purposeful life — but the only way to realize this is to begin telling our stories more truly. Our prayer is that this conversation would help you process your deepest longings, your grief, your shame, your identity, your purpose, and your perspective of both God and humanity… and by doing so we pray that it would invite you to engage more authentically with your own story and the relationships God has placed in your life. Only then can you feel truly known and connected and live in the meaningful reality you desire to create.Dr. Curt Thompson's website: https://curtthompsonmd.com/ (Book) The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves - https://amzn.to/3Mj9Nyo (Book) The Soul of Desire: Discovering the Neuroscience of Longing, Beauty, and Community - https://amzn.to/3MMKPJ1

What do our brains want more than chocolate, sex, or a sports car? What does your memory of long past events have to do with the apparently unrelated arguments and anxiety you are experiencing these days? Psychiatrist Curt Thompson discusses these questions from the perspective of both brain science and theology. A psychiatrist in private practice, Dr. Thompson has expertise in interpersonal neurobiology, and contends that a key to living a good life comes quite simply to this: “being known.” Lee and Curt discuss two of Curt's books, “The Anatomy of the Soul” and “The Soul of Desire,” with conversation on trauma and anxiety, connection and community, and what your memory of long past events has to do with the apparently unrelated arguments you are having many years later.  Books discussed in this episode: Anatomy of the Soul: Surprising Connections between Neuroscience and Spiritual Practices That Can Transform Your Life and Relationships The Soul of Desire: Discovering the Neuroscience of Longing, Beauty, and Community Want more from Curt Thompson in conversation with Lee?  Check out our earlier podcast episode with Curt on Curt's book The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves.  Additional NSE episodes of related interest: The Price of the Pursuit of Pleasure: Anna Lembke The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: John Mark Comer What Hath Christianity to do with Psychology? On episode 28 of the She is Kindred podcast, Britt holds space for Julie Klein's deeply personal story of being a cycle breaker.  Britt and Julie come together as mothers who deeply desire for the next generation to witness the power and redemption in true forgiveness so that we don't walk in the old ways of being. And the way to true forgiveness involves making the choice to engage in our grief, to move through the grief, and to accept that grief does not have a timeline. Julie Klein is a social worker/mental health counselor. Though she is not currently in the social work field, her heart remains hopeful for social justice in this fractured world. She currently stays home constantly herding and unschooling her intensely spirited children. A pour-over cup (or two or three) of coffee is her lifeline and keeps her in the game. She is a fierce advocate for showing up with vulnerability and authenticity, believes everyone has a powerful story to share, and is convinced words hold the unique power to connect with others. She writes at the intersection of her evolving faith and the joys of life, the inevitable grief of life, and the gray that is in-between. Though she has called various cities across the United States home, she now resides near Seattle, Washington with her husband and three children. Connect with Julie on Instagram: @julielynnkleinIn this episode, Britt talks with Julie Klein about: Generational trauma presents in different ways from generation to generation. The importance of understanding our old narratives in order to move forward to create new narratives. Forgiveness is necessary so that we can experience true freedom within our new narrativesTherapy including EMDR and medications are incredibly helpful tools to help us heal our trauma wounds. Engaging in our grief is a choice, and it can be overwhelming. Once we move through the grief, we are no longer bound to it and are freed up to move into our new story. Resources mentioned in this episode: The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World EMDR TherapyThe Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About OurselvesQuotable:“When we have understanding and acceptance about our narrative, it empowers us to move on and create a new narrative. To give ourselves the gift of freedom to live in the new narrative is ultimately how we walk in forgiveness because we aren't held to the old way of being.” - Julie Klein“Without forgiveness, we remain tethered to the person who harmed us. We are bound with chains of bitterness, tied together, trapped. Until we can forgive the person who harmed us, that person will hold the keys to our happiness; that person will be our jailor. When we forgive, we take back control of our own fate and our feelings. We become our own liberators. We don't forgive to help the other person. We don't forgive for others. We forgive for ourselves. Forgiveness, in other words, is the best form of self-interest. This is true both spiritually and scientifically.” - Desmond Tutu“In some ways, the most forgiveness I've needed to give is to myself.” - Julie Klein“And in doing so, you are opening the door to release the tether from that trauma in your past, and to give them (our children) this wide berth to develop fully and freely as the next gSupport the show

Halfway There | Christian Testimonies | Spiritual Formation, Growth, and Personal Experiences with God

Christopher Smith is the Senior Editor of The Englewood Review of Books, and author of several books, including most recently: How The Body of Christ Talks: Recovering the Practice of Conversation in the Church. Today, Christopher shares the place of reading in his spiritual journey, how he learned to untangle depression from doubt, and why he believes in the power of a great conversation. We also talk about some best practices for hosting conversations at your church. Christopher's story reminds us that we learn best in conversation. Listen to Christopher's story now! Stories Christopher shared: Starting The Englewood Review of Books Growing up in a Christian family in Washington D.C. in a Grace Brethren church His tenuous relationship with church even in college Developing his sense of historical church through reading Going to graduate school and learning about the history of ideas Learning how to disentangle depression from doubt How community plays into depression Why embodiment needs to be valued How the practice of conversation captured his heart Why defining terms is important for a conversation What a facilitated conversation looks like Great quotes from Christopher: The dark nights of the soul that I've been through sometimes feel particularly lonely. I'm hopeful that when we take our life together seriously, churches can offer hope to those who struggle with loneliness and isolation. The abundant life of God in community is really good news and much better than the alternative. Conversation didn't magically help us resolve things, but it helped us to know and trust one another even when we didn't agree. Yet parenting without a solid community can bring feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Just like our kids, we as parents need to feel safety and connection in community too. That comes when we parent in community. What holds us back from parenting in community? And what's the way forward to more safe, connected, and meaningful parenting relationships? My tangle with depression is teaching me to pay attention to all the "appliances" that drain energy from the soul, including my long-avoidance of a part of me that used to talk to Jesus every day. I talk with Dr. Curt Thompson, a psychiatrist and the author of The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves about the neurobiology of shame. Dr. Thompson is an expert in interpersonal neurobiology but seasons his knowledge of this budding scientific field with outright come-to-Jesus language that a devout Christian would appreciate. As much as I would have liked to edit out my relationship to Christianity and its formative role in how I learned to feel shame for being human, it was Curt's friendship and love for me, and for his readers, that moved me past my fears to once again feel pride for my native faith as a young boy. The Enneagram provides nine consistent, fairly predictable ways for us to understand and tell our narrative of how we operate in the world and make sense of our lives. It’s a tool that helps us enter into a conversation with ourselves about the recurring themes and patterns of behaviors that are self-defeating or hurtful to others. One of the themes that operates as a thread in each of our lives is shame. Next to love, I believe shame is the most powerful force in the universe, but in the wrong direction. In today’s profoundly moving, heart-changing episode, author and psychiatrist Dr. Curt Thompson joins me for a deep conversation about shame and how it plays out as a human experience for all nine types. In this episode we cover: The definition of shame… what it does as opposed to what it is Ways shame manifests in each Enneagram type How we can begin to heal shame through community About Curt Thompson, M.D. Curt Thompson, M.D., is a psychiatrist in private practice in Falls Church, Virginia, and founder of Being Known, which develops teaching programs, seminars, and resource materials to help people explore the connection between interpersonal neurobiology and Christian spirituality which lead to genuine change and transformation.  Dr. Thompson is the author of Anatomy of the Soul and The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves. Halfway There | Christian Testimonies | Spiritual Formation, Growth, and Personal Experiences with God

Cyd and Geoff Holsclaw are Vineyard pastors in Grand Rapids, MI. Cyd is also a spiritual director and life coach, and Geoff is affiliate professor of theology at Northern Seminary. Married almost twenty years, they have two teenage boys love going on road trips together. Cyd and Geoff recently published Does God Really Like Me? Discovering the God Who Wants to Be with Us. Today, they share the story of first encountering God, meeting one another at just the right time, and learning that God really wants to be with us. The road was a little different for Cyd and Geoff but ultimately led them both to awareness of God's desire to be with them. Listen to Cyd & Geoff's story! Stories Cyd & Geoff shared: Cyd growing up in Grand Rapids, MI and needing to leave a quickly as she could Geoff grew up as a “friendly fundamentalist” The covenant theology that made Cyd feel as if God was about the larger community not the individual How Geoff moved from a more legalistic faith to a personal relationship with God Teaching kids about Judges and how that shaped Cyd's view of God Geoff going through the Sermon on the Mount and how the Lord spoke to him on the beach Cyd shared how losing her mom in her late 20s was a disorienting season When Jesus played hide and seek with Cyd How Geoff learned through pain and what God taught him Moving to Chicago to go to seminary Pastoring together in Michigan Cyd leaving her ministry position and learning to be not do Great quotes from Cyd & Geoff: How do I find this God that I've heard about but haven't known? (Cyd) Reading the Bible through the lens of “God always wants to be with us” changes the whole story. (Cyd) Jesus can be fun! I had never known Jesus can be fun. It's not a sin problem; it's a separation problem. God is the one overcoming all the barriers keeping us from him. Welcome to Episode 32 of Catching Your Breath: The Podcast, with Steve Austin! In this episode, we're talking about what shame is, how it can impact your daily life, how to share it, and how to heal it. Keep scrolling for more great shame resources, plus my free workbook! Healing from shame isn’t something you can do overnight. It’s a process that can take months or even years. The good news is that you don’t have to take the journey alone. Many professionals have written insightful guides that can guide you on this journey. Here are a few books you may want to pick up… Self Care for the Wounded Soul: 21 Days of Messy Grace (by Steve Austin, with Kate Pieper, LMFT) If you have ever felt hopeless, if you have ever believed that all the bad things in your life were beyond redemption, if you have ever felt unworthy of being loved or accepted, if you have ever feared what would happen if people found out whatever it is that haunts you - I get it. I have been there, too. Maybe you are recovering from abuse, addiction, or a suicide attempt like me. Maybe you are struggling with anxiety or depression and don’t know why yet. No matter what your starting point is, the tools in this journal will help you begin to answer the question, “Now what?” You’re tired of living this way. You want to change your life, and you don’t know where to begin. I hope this 21-day self-care journal will help you answer that question. It’s time to take ownership of your life, and that begins with good self-care. It’s hard work, but you can do it. No more running, no more hiding, no more masks. No matter what your journey has looked like so far, recovery is possible. I am living proof. Healing the Shame that Binds You by John Bradshaw One book that can be helpful for you’re dealing with shame is Healing the Shame that Binds You. In this book, the author discusses shame, how it develops, and what to do about it. Much of the book has been influenced by the author’s own experience with alcoholism. He shares many of the same concepts found in the 12-step program. So if you’re dealing with an addiction as well as shame, you may find this resource the most helpful. I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn't) by Brene Brown Brene Brown’s book, I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn’t) isn’t just about shame. It’s about living authentically and letting go of the need for perfection. She encourages readers to embrace their flaws and imperfections and release their guilt. Although anyone can benefit from reading this book, many of the stories and interviews inside it are related to motherhood. If you’re struggling with being a parent, this can be an eye-opening read. If you want to learn more shame and how it’s affecting you, consider watching Brene Brown’s TED Talk titled Listening to Shame. It’s both educational and inspiring. The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves by Curt Thompson In The Soul of Shame, psychiatrist Curt Thompson, invites you to take a look at how shame is affecting your life. He explores the different ways shame enters your life and how to experience true and lasting freedom. The author is an expert in interpersonal neurobiology, so some people found his book can be a bit academic in parts. He’s also a Christian and much of his content stems from a Christian worldview, so you can expect to encounter some theology in this book as well. Living with Your Heart Wide Open by Steve Flowers and Bob Stahl When you carry shame with you, it’s easy to hold onto negative thoughts. That’s why in Living with Your Heart Wide Open, the authors spend much of the content focusing on mindfulness and self-compassion. Many reviewers loved that the book was good for self-discovery and healing of internal wounds. There’s a heavy influence on meditation and Buddhist principles. The authors discuss common scenarios and recommend healing meditations for them. Reading about how others are affected by shame can be freeing. It’s freeing to realize that you’re not alone in your pain and that healing can be found. It may not be easy but it is a journey you’ll never regret taking. How is shame affecting your life? Shame affects all of us--even if we don't know how to name it. It often drapes us in a vague feeling of being covered in a wet blanket. It speaks, "I am worth less. I must hide. There is something wrong with me." How can we address it neurologically, spiritually, and practically? We brought in the big guns to answer all three shame categories today: Dr. Curt Thompson, MD, author of one of our favorite books, The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves. This and next week's conversation are not ones to miss. They impacted us all deeply. Highlights: "The gospel--if it is good news--does not begin with 'I am more sinful than I believe.' It begins, in fact, with 'I am more loved than I can imagine.' It is in that space of being loved incessantly, relentlessly, that we become aware just how sinful we are." --Dr. Curt Thompson, M.D. "It is not difficult for us to register [shame] in catastrophic events (bullying, sexual and physical abuse, or some kind of public humiliation). The thing is, as far as our real life is concerned, the vast majority of how these [shame] events actually occur is in the privacy of our own minds. It is the dozens of times when we say to ourselves 'I should have done this. I should have done that. I'm not good enough at this. I'm not good enough at that.' . . . It's these micro-moments that turn into a death of a thousand cuts." --Dr. Curt Thompson, M.D. For More: https://lauriekrieg.com/podcast/exploring-our-souls-of-shame-part-1/

Today, Suzanne shares her story of finding the Enneagram, how she studied it for years without teaching, and answers your questions. Suzanne grew up being exposed to many spiritual practices and that shows in her openness to them. Suzanne explains exactly what the Enneagram is, why you should not rely on it exclusively, and how it can help your relationships. Please listen and share Suzanne's story! Stories Suzanne shared: Founder of Life in the Trinity ministries with her husband Growing up in the panhandle of Texas with kind, Christian parents in the United Methodist church Joining the Roman Catholic church and why it was attractive Being exposed at a young age to many spiritual practices Discovering the Enneagram with Richard Rohr How the Enneagram helps us understand ourselves What the Enneagram is designed for and how it helps us Whether the Enneagram changes Suzanne answers your questions about Enneagram Great quotes from Suzanne: Every day, at 67 and 71, we get up and ask ourselves the question what is ours to do today, and what is the next right thing for us to do, and what would God have us to do. When people begin to commit themselves to a deeper spiritual journey, the first two things that happen are they run into the fact that they don't like themselves. And the Enneagram helps you get over that. And the second thing is struggles with family of origin and with other people. And the Enneagram helps you get over that. I can't fall in love with a God that I'm afraid of. The idea that we are conditionally loved by God is a contributor to conditionally loving other people.
