The second of this summer's bonus episodes sees Oliver join forces with podcast chums One Good Thing to take on the flash-backing, back-tracking madness of 2006's infamous The Wicker Man!Nic Cages makes an unwelcome return to the show as we interlock the Director's and Theatrical cuts in an attempt to uncover the one good thing about this crappy cult classic. We're talking the films' endlessly useless plot points, complete dearth of terror or suspense, and the somewhat overstated (and overrated) madness of Nic Cage (which makes up about 2% of this hellishly dull retread of a remake).
Tim's on holiday, so Dan and Ol reconvene for this bonus episode to cover songs/music videos from a few films previously featured on the show. Inspired by our friends That Awful Sound, we're talking Aerosmith's I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing (Armageddon), Was Not Was's Walk the Dinosaur (Flintstones & Super Mario Bros) and last but by no means least Smash Mouth's All Star (Inspector Gadget)!Featured within: Richie Sambora's risque facial hair, Was Not Was's hidden anti-nuclear war agenda and of course, the insane All Star renaissance and accompanying memedom surrounding Smash Mouth's most (in)famous song!
It's that time again! Video Negative return to fill your sacks with plenty of Christmas cheer! Unwrapped and re-gifted this year is 1997's unnecessary Home Alone 3!Featured on this episode: the logistics of getting your "thing" trapped by toilet seats, comparisons to an infamous 70s exploitation flick, the worst police force and FBI in cinema history and the results of the Worst Film of 2016 poll are finally revealed! Great fun for all the family, so roll a joint, sit back and get festive!
The latest episode sees Video Negative take on Pamela Anderson's double D dud Barb Wire. After the semi-enjoyment of Kazaam, the gang are back in familiar territory with this one. Across the board in awfulness, this Casablanca clone gets wrapped up in uniformly terrible performances, exposition out the wazoo and a deceptively complicated story. Why is everything blue? Why does everything have to explained? How come even the antagonist sucks? Plus, the worst cinematic fist bump caught on film and three of the unlikeliest inductees into the Vid Neg Hall of Fame. Don't miss this one!
Video Negative's first request episode of the new year sees them take on Shaq's second film Kazaam! Unprepared to watch the film alone, the gang view the film together and then give you their red hot take on this foul up of a film. Why does everyone scream in this film? What's with people falling from great heights and surviving? Does pizza make up for years of absenteeism, and what the hell is the deal with the cassette tape? Confused, unintelligible, needlessly complicated (and that's just our leading man), a hitherto unfounded love for Shaq does blossom through the episode however, so be sure to listen in!
With Dan on holiday lounging in blameless bliss, Ol and Tim dive back into Video Negative's early days to take a look at music videos featured on the soundtracks of Batman & Robin, Cool As Ice, Spice World and of course, Wild Wild West. Vid Neg favourites Vanilla Ice and Will Smith return, while the Smashing Pumpkins get the usual treatment for the first time. Also, the guy who pretty much influenced the whole premise of the show, That Awful Sound's Alexander Edward drops by to wax American about the very British Spice Girls, offering us his own views on his favourite member, their impact in the US and their nipples. Also, plenty of discussion about favourite music videos and soundtracks from the crew's youth. Not at all self indulgent, check out this bonus treat before the whole gang return to whip Hulk Hogan's ass in the next full episode.https://soundcloud.com/video-negative/music-video-negative-bonus-episode
Surf's up on the wild wild west coast! It's 2013, and anyone caught doing anything remotely fun is exiled to a run down Los Angeles where they're forced to listen to bad nu metal. Yes, it's John Carpenter's 1996 sequel Escape from LA, the final part in the Great Directors, Bad Films trilogy. It's gang warfare on this instalment of the Video Negative podcast, as Tim faces off against Dan and Ol over two very differing opinions of this much maligned/deservedly hated (whichever way you look at it) sci-fi yarn. Also featured: the gang run down the top 5 worst special effects out of the films they've looked at, Ol details why he loves John Carpenter so much, and plenty more inductees into the Vid Neg hall of shame. Plenty of mass debating on this one!
The first in Video Negative's series of "Great Directors, Bad Films" sees Dan pick one of Roger Ebert's most beloved films, Rob Reiner's 1994 honker North. The gang take apart the film that seemingly ended Reiner's streak of incredible run of great cinema, and enter a slump he's not left since. The crew are aghast at the god-awful humour - none of which finds its mark - the misuse of a huge, talented cast, and all the horrendous ethnic stereotyping on display. Plus, Tim reveals a very revolting alternative definition of an Eskimo Pie.
The concluding part of the first Video Negative two parter sees the crew the take on Troy Duffy's 1999 honker The Boondock Saints. "Pulp Fiction with soul" this ain't. It doesn't take long for the crew to lose it, with Ol reaching breaking point numerous times throughout. Also featured: Ol and Tim reveal their respective screenplays they wrote when they were eighteen (both of which feature names of existing films), Dan channels Fozzy Bear, the gang discuss what might've happened had Duffy's film been a success, and the air turns brown towards the end of the episode. The saints are marching in, and Video Negative tramples them, don't miss this one!https://soundcloud.com/video-negative/the-boondock-saints-episode-12/download.mp3
Join the Video Negative crew as they discuss Overnight - the story of how Troy Duffy duffed up the chance of a lifetime in making his 1999 opus The Boondock Saints. Part one of a two part special, with our critique of the Boondock Saints itself coming later in the month. Also featured: A peak into Mark Wahlberg's internal monologue, what do the Beatles sound like when mashed up with Alice in Chains, Ol and Dan atone for a past transgression at Tim's expense and much much more. Don't miss this one!https://soundcloud.com/video-negative/overnight-episode-11
The premiere episode of Video Negative and it's a doozy. Joel Schumacher's infamous and ill advised foray into the world of the Caped Crusader. You know the deal by now - Bat nipples, ice puns, rubbish villains and a bored George Clooney as the masked man himself.Listen in here!
The Pauls have been sucking the life out of the podcast game for so long that the podcast world struck back: Oliver Urwin from the wicked sweet Video Negative podcast punished us from the skies. The gauntlet? We must not only watch James Nguyen's Birdemic: Shock and Terror but we must also find some good things about it. As in the classic OGT style. Then he LAUGHED, listeners. Long and hard. At our very own podcast. That is until he realised that he had agreed to come on said podcast to talk about a film of his choice. Tears were shed and hugs exchanged (keeping the requisite groin distance for professionals) but it makes little difference, dear OGTeam. Such is podcast law! What, demands you the public, were the good things about Birdemic: Shock and Terror? Featuring: not birds, one part of the American dream, dirty cuts, BATZ, hanging out with all your families and just the worst businessman, guys. Welcome to our first Nickelback-related video! Spoler alert: it sucks. This is the song from the Spider-Man soundtrack performed by a butt rock supergroup made up of Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, Saliva Frontman Josey “Joe C” Scott, and the douchebag from Theory of a Deadman Sure, Nickelback himself is on this track, but the meat of the episode lies with Joe C and his weird antagonistic relationship with The Hives, The Strokes, and Chad Kroeger himself. Make sure to check out our buddy Oliver on the Video Negative podcast Music We like: Quicksand - Interiors, Less Art - Strangled Light, and Renounced
This week's recommendation comes from @VideoNegative podcast – who eschewed the mean-spirited and plain nasty rubbish film for the kind that tries hard but is nevertheless the equivalent of the dog with one leg shorter than the rest, hobbling urgently away from its own mess. Well played, we say, Video Negative. Well played. Featuring: a story maze, the wrong workmate, an original idea, signer's regret, a grabby Bond and an evil Emma Peel we may or may not have explained.
Brian and Shaun, after previously swearing off discussions of documentaries because of their inability to discuss them, are blindsided by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's brilliant comedy/horror/mockumentary. Our two intrepid hosts take a swing at discussing this film, but quickly retreat to safer topics, including the "war" on Christmas, blaxploitation and sex ed films, our friends at Video Negative, why people should appreciate Twilight and 50 Shades of Gray, and the indispensable calendar app Fantastical.
