Love is in the air… and in the pixels. In this Valentine's-themed episode of The Weekly Warp Pipe, we dive into retro and modern video game love stories — from rescuing Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros. to the emotional depths of Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, and the epic romance of Lunar: Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue.We also revisit arcade-era relationships in Kung Fu, Double Dragon, and River City Ransom — because nothing says love like fighting through waves of enemies.
From the electronic noises of Super Mario Bros to the orchestral soundtracks of games like Journey and Hollow Knight, video game music is no longer just a backing track.

Episode 276 *We apologize about the echo and the reverb throughout the episode, it wasn't there when we were recording but I found it after the fact when I was starting to edit this. Hope you still able to listen to the end. Thank You.*Gregg and I rewind one of the most misunderstood pop culture artifacts of the 90s: Super Mario Bros. (1993).We talk about what it felt like watching this movie back then — before internet think pieces, before lore breakdowns, before nostalgia softened the edges — and how it lands now, viewed through adult eyes shaped by decades of games, reboots, and fan discourse. Is it a disaster? A cult classic? Or something we just weren't ready for yet? Before we dive into Dinohattan, we kick off Black History Month by revisiting Boomerang (1992) — reflecting on its cultural impact, its humor, and why it still holds a place in the conversation decades later. From there, the episode becomes a full pop culture check-in:Super Bowl energy & halftime reactionsWWE Unreal Season 2 moments that stood outVideo games turning 30 this year and how they shaped how we play, watch, and connectCommunity Pod Deck responses — stories, memories, and shared nostalgiaA Fast & Furious fan theory that sent us down a rabbit holeReflections on why certain pop culture moments stay with us long after the screen goes darkThis isn't just a movie rewind — it's a conversation about memory, context, and how growing up with pop culture shapes who we become. The things we loved, the things we didn't understand yet, and the stories that somehow followed us into adulthood. If you grew up renting tapes, blowing into cartridges, or watching movies that made no sense but still felt important — this episode is for you.

Nicky and Eric take on a gauntlet of Mario games in an episode all about Super Mario All-Stars. Super Mario All-Stars is a 1993 platform game compilation developed and published by Nintendo for the SNES console. It contains remakes of four Mario games, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3.Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?) BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc.Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcastCredits:Nicky SmithEric LuedtkeMusic by Mark Spurlock and Eric LuedtkeReferences:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_All-Starshttps://mario.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Mario_All-Starshttps://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Trivia/SuperMarioAllStarshttps://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/snes/588737-super-mario-all-stars/trivia

Alles is goed! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a series on 1985's Ultima IV. After talking about the recent Defeating Games for Charity, we set the game in its time, talk about our encounters in the past with the series, and then dive into the manuals and the start of the game. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: The first couple of hours and the manuals Issues covered: Defeating Games for Charity, the first pancake, our experiences with this series, an opaque franchise, mainlining a game, opacity being part of the point, performance characteristics of the PCs of the time, the importance of the manuals, entering the world as yourself, using the manual to reinforce the role-play, not requiring graphics, priming the player, describing the geography of different areas, imposing importance on a handful of pixels, the quest of the game, sublimating the quest of the game, a less traditional RPG experience, after reading the manual, the deep questions/dilemmas, tournament structure, choosing your most important virtue, getting the bard, series characters who can join your party, reflecting your beliefs, getting different dilemmas, the Venn diagram of virtues, the Tinker profession, symmetry in design, Buddhism and the Eightfold Path, countering the cultural zeitgeist, the Avatar and Hinduism, a deity's manifestation on Earth, finding your way into swamps, both hosts being poisoned and dying, death and rebirth, being unable to recruit early. The salient point of this podcast episode revolves around our examination of the film *Super Mario Brothers*, a cinematic endeavor that has engendered considerable confusion and disappointment among fans of the original video game franchise. We delve into the dissonance between the beloved source material and the film's execution, positing that the film's fundamental flaws stem from its failure to honor the established lore and characterizations that fans hold dear. Throughout our discourse, we express our incredulity at the creative decisions made during production, particularly the choice to transform beloved characters into a narrative that diverges significantly from their intended portrayal. In recounting our own experiences with the film, we navigate the complex emotions associated with its release, reflecting on both the nostalgia and the disillusionment it incited. Ultimately, our analysis underscores the broader implications of adapting cherished intellectual properties without a genuine commitment to their core essence.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

However, i just can't stop myself from playing this game every now and again."The game that probably best fits this category for me is FF10-2. There are better JRPGs in terms of gameplay mechanic loops, story, and sidequests. But I have yet to find another JRPG that is centered around a bunch of magical girls kicking butt Charlie's Angel style the way FF10-2 does!! Also, WHO THE HECK IS LENNE??

Are you measuring your progress by counting days without pornography? If so, you may be setting yourself up for frustration and unnecessary shame. In this episode, I take a closer look at the all or nothing mindset that so many people are taught when trying to quit porn, and why starting over every time you slip up works against how real change actually happens. I walk through what learning truly looks like in any area of life. Whether it is learning a new skill like snowboarding or playing Super Mario Bros, progress is rarely linear. Learn what actually creates progress, how to work with urges instead of fearing them, and how to use slip-ups as part of your growth. This episode will help you rethink what success looks like and stay engaged even when things feel messy. What does it take to market movies that shape culture—and to lead with integrity when the stakes are highest? In this Best Of Trailer Geeks & Teaser Gods episode, Corey Nathan revisits his powerful conversation with Dwight Caines, President of Domestic Marketing at Universal Pictures and one of the most respected voices in modern film marketing. One of our "best of's" since we brought this program back, this episode remains as relevant—and resonant—as ever. Dwight reflects on a career spanning Sony Pictures and Universal, working on iconic franchises including Spider-Man, James Bond, Oppenheimer, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But this conversation goes far beyond campaigns and box office numbers. Dwight opens up about leadership, mentorship, diversity and inclusion, the responsibility of storytellers, and what it means to be a steady presence in moments of industry—and societal—turbulence. It's a masterclass in how great marketing starts with understanding people. Whether you're a trailer creative, studio exec, marketer, or emerging storyteller, this episode is a reminder that how you lead matters just as much as what you ship. Key Takeaways Story Starts With Audience Dwight explains why every campaign begins with a deep understanding of who the movie is for—and what emotional response it needs to evoke to get audiences off the couch and into theaters. From Data to Instinct With roots in market research, Dwight shares how the best campaigns balance data with gut, and why "research be damned" can sometimes be the bravest—and smartest—call. Digital Before It Was Cool As an early digital pioneer at Sony, Dwight recounts building online communities around films like Spider-Man long before digital marketing was standard practice. Leadership in Crisis Dwight reflects on moments when the industry—and the country—felt unsteady, and why authenticity, calm, and moral clarity are essential leadership traits. Mentorship & Representation From teaching at Syracuse and UCLA to shaping DEI initiatives at Universal and the Academy, Dwight makes the case that representation isn't performative—it's foundational to better work and better culture. Notable Quotes "If you see me running for the emergency exit, then trouble's coming. Otherwise, take it as a good sign." "Marketing is about evoking emotion. If you don't know what you want people to feel, the campaign won't land." "If you see it, you can be it. I didn't see myself in front of the classroom—so I decided to become that person." "Diversity isn't invitation. It's allowing people to show up authentically and be heard." This week! Candace the Magnificent and Jeremy Cobb are joined by lead producer of Koboa and new game Beasts - Adrián Mejía! Adrián shares how a childhood trip to Brazil and the moment he first saw Super Mario Bros. 3 ignited his love of imaginative worlds, later deepened by discovering the TTRPG Nephilim. He dives into the South American inspirations that shaped Koboa, the careful research and cultural grounding behind its lore, and the determination to challenge stereotypes by creating a space where South American players feel truly welcome. We also explore his new game Beasts, which made Jeremy's teenage heart grow three sizes. Expect themes of dehumanisation, the weight of an unwinnable war, what remains of you afterward, and a clear thread of Animorphs-style intensity. The episode wraps with Adrián's Tale From The Table, plus a little insight into future episodes...Adrián will be returning to run Beasts, so stay tuned, Halflings!
