As we state at the start of most episodes, Beat of the Month got its name because we choose a theme for each month and play games on that theme. We also do deep dives on specific games where we all play the same game and talk about it in detail. For these deep dives, we each get to pick whatever game we want and everyone else is forced to play them. That's how we end up with some...let's say interesting games such as Rumble Roses. However for our monthly themes we all vote on them. That would have one expect higher quality choices as a result. Well, most of the time.For this episode of Beat of the Month we have Sleepy Games. It's September, so an idea of 'Wake me up when September ends' was all I could think of for a September theme. With a whopping two votes, this ended up being our choice for September. So what even is a sleepy game? Could be a game focusing on a main character who sleeps, could be a game that has a day/night cycle, could be a game that's boring and literally puts you to sleep. Riveting stuff.However, defying all odds we still put together a solid episode! We discuss Super Mario Bros 2, Citizen Sleeper, Hotel Dusk, and Melbro rounds out his year of playing a game for each of the crew members with Catherine. And appropriately we also fit in some Grand Theft Auto 6 discussion as well which is sure to have people zoning out soon. "I love the Power Glove. It's so bad." We watched "The Wizard" directed by Todd Holland and we're still trying to pass "Super Mario Bros. 3." When this movie was released in 1989 it was the Superbowl, Christmas and Summer Vacation all wrapped into one. A move... about Nintendo... starring Fred Savage - there was no other choice than to Stan. While it's now a cult classic among adults of a certain age (read: Xenniells and older Millenials) it does suffer from an over written plot with a pretty depressing storyline. What could have been a run of the mill, 80's underdog competition movie along the lines of "Karate Kid" or "Rad", set against a Nintendo backdrop, instead we got a sometimes heavy family drama. Overcoming trauma, living with PTSD and a possibly neuro-divergent co-lead is some pretty heady stuff for kids who wanted to see Mario, Luigo, Link and Samus on the big screen. Savage is screaming his performance (no doubt attempting to go toe to toe with Beau Bridges and Christian Slater) but the standouts are Luke Edwards playing the titular video game Wizard and the iconic Jenny Lewis as street smart tough girl Haley. We also get the fantastic use of "Send Me an Angel" by Australian band Real Life. They reeled us in with actual Nintendo games on the big screen - they kept our butts in the seats with sweet behind the scenes Universal Studios action! Avengers Doomsday is deep in edits, the Russo brothers just called their script a living organism, and everyone lost their minds about it. The Pokémon Center on site required a timed booking through a site that crashed, the second merch area turned out to be reseller tables selling singles for hundreds, and Squeaks walked out having spent twenty dollars and bought his Worlds backpack online later at roughly four times the price. Next year's Worlds moves to Singapore, so US fans have no idea when it comes back. The Samurai Redneck Zombie Killer started as a title and a cover. Kit Wallis brought Allen the name and the first five pages, posted the cover to Instagram, and the response was so far outside his normal engagement that they fast tracked the whole book. It beat Comic Soup's previous best campaign total in a single day. Allen and Kit built the book around two people instead of a community, borrowing the Leon and Mathilda dynamic from The Professional, right down to naming the samurai Lee. The art uses a manga inspired color scheme with the first five pages in full color before shifting to black, white, and splashes of red. Paramount Skydance passed on Dungeons & Dragons 2 as financially unviable, but Hasbro is shopping it. Honor Among Thieves earned around $205 million on a roughly $150 million budget split with Hasbro's E1, opened four days before The Super Mario Bros. Movie, landed a month after the OGL boycott, and never told non fans it was a family comedy. The Avengers Doomsday improv worry is overblown. The Russos worked the same way on Infinity War and Endgame, their visual reference is Once Upon a Time in the West, and Robert Downey Jr. said he would not have come back without them. Improv on a movie this size gets spent on one on one character scenes, not on Sentinels and VFX plates. Jim Cummings and Terry McGovern are both being recast in the Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Darkwing Duck reboot, seven years after Cummings recorded the pilot that got it greenlit. The 2017 DuckTales storyline he voiced was about an actor destroyed by a Darkwing Duck recast. Gargoyles' live action version is dead but the animated one is alive, Hey Arnold is in conversations, an adult Doug has concept art out, and King of the Hill is the template everyone is pointing to. But underneath the cartridges, Game Boys, Nintendo Power magazines, and what might be the most famous Power Glove in cinematic history, there is actually a pretty solid road movie trying desperately to escape.Troy and Brad dig into the strange mix of family drama, cross-country adventure, and shameless corporate advertising that makes The Wizard such a fascinating artifact of late 1980s cinema. Somewhere in this movie is a genuinely interesting Beau Bridges and Christian Slater road movie about a father and son trying to reconnect while chasing their runaway family across the country. Unfortunately, that movie keeps getting interrupted by Nintendo reminding everyone that Super Mario Bros. 3 exists.Of course, no discussion of The Wizardwould be complete without talking about its legendary product placement. This is a movie that does not gently incorporate Nintendo into its story. Nintendo basically grabs the steering wheel, drives the movie into the nearest electronics store, and tells everyone to look at the Power Glove.
