Ever wonder how culture and language barriers affect diagnosing chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) in Latinx patients? In this episode, allergist Dr. Juanita Mora joins Kortney and Dr. Gupta to discuss chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives) and the unique challenges faced by the Latinx community. They highlight the importance of cultural competency in health care and the barriers that Latinx patients often encounter, such as language differences and access to specialists. They also discuss how Latinx patients are often not given all treatment options for hives, such as biologics. Dr. Mora emphasizes the importance of having resources available in Spanish and encourages patients and families to advocate for their care. They explore practical tips on how technology, family support, and proper patient education can help overcome barriers, leading to better diagnosis, treatment, and improved quality of life for Hispanic patients managing CSU. What we cover in our episode about chronic hives in the Latinx community: Diagnosing hives in skin of color: How CSU symptoms can present differently on darker skin tones, making accurate diagnosis harder. Overcoming barriers for Latinx patients: The specific hurdles the Latinx community faces like language barriers, limited access to Spanish-speaking allergists, and challenges obtaining advanced treatments such as biologics. Role of family and community support: How involving family members and community leaders can improve CSU awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage patients to seek timely medical treatment. Importance of Spanish-language patient education: Why accessible, culturally relevant education and resources in Spanish are essential for empowering Latinx patients to manage their CSU effectively. Cultural beliefs and CSU diagnosis: How cultural perceptions around health and family influence the timing of diagnosis and willingness to seek medical care. What if one of punk rock's most essential records wasn't born in London or New York—but in a repressive corner of 1970s Australia? In this episode, we dive into I'm Stranded, the ferocious, lo-fi debut from Brisbane's own The Saints—a band that burned bright before punk even knew what it was supposed to sound like.Recorded in just two days with cranked amps, no overdubs, and a heavy dose of youth rebellion, I'm Stranded delivers raw power with surprising musical depth. The Saints weren't copying anyone—they couldn't. Isolated from punk's UK and US scenes, they built something unique: a mix of garage rock swing, proto-punk energy, and rock 'n' roll heart that would go on to influence everyone from Kurt Cobain to Mark Lanegan. This episode unpacks the album's explosive origins, its unexpected impact overseas, and how the band's refusal to conform—musically or stylistically—helped set a new standard for underground music. We also explore its enduring influence on punk, garage, grunge, and beyond. If you dig bands like The Stooges, The Damned, Radio Birdman, Nirvana, or The Hives, you'll want to hear this one.

Aussie band Kingswood are rock royalty, having played shows with AC/DC and The Hives, tearing down the rooves of Aussie venues in equal measure with their unique brand of raucous rock. In 2024, the band undertook a record-setting road trip across Australia with the Hometowns Tour, the longest ever music tour, encompassing 112 shows over six months, with everywhere from the outer regions of Western Australia to the sticky floors of Sydney getting a taste of their guitar licks and long hair. Knowing what a historical moment this would be for the band, Kingswood tapped emerging director Darcy Newton on the shoulder to shoot social media footage and share their journey on the road. That notion quickly fell by the wayside when Darcy realised there was something more at play here, with his trusty camera able to capture the highs and the lows of the bands journey, ultimately bringing forth the feature documentary CLAPTRAP.In the following interview, recorded ahead of the films roll out in Australian cinemas which kicks off with a premiere event at The Astor Theatre Melbourne on Friday 4 April, and culminates with a Q&A screening at The Ritz Sydney on Friday 11 April, Darcy and producer Luca Catalano talk about how they came on board to shoot the film, what life was like on the bus with the band, and how Darcy captured some of CLAPTRAP's more impactful moments, like a late night boozy chat with a regional music icon or a deep and meaningful chat between bandmates about the meaning of one of their songs.CLAPTRAP AUSTRALIAN SCREENINGS** KINGSWOOD attending Friday 4 April Astor Theatre Melbourne **PREMIERE EVENTTicketsSaturday 5 April Thornbury Picture House Melbourne **SCREENING, Q&A EVENTTicketsSunday 6 April Pivotonian Cinema GeelongSCREENING, Q&A EVENT Wednesday 9 April Regal Theatre Adelaide SA SCREENINGWednesday 9 April Byron Bay Palace Byron Bay NSW **SCREENING, Q&A EVENT Thursday 10 April New Farm Cinema Brisbane ** SCREENING, Q&A EVENT TicketsFriday 11 April The Ritz Sydney **SCREENING, Q&A EVENT Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Jim Tew takes a deep dive into the world of big colonies, posing the question: Are larger hives always better? With his signature blend of humor and beekeeping wisdom, Jim unpacks the complexities of managing booming colonies, reflecting on the pros, cons, and unintended consequences of letting colonies grow to massive sizes. Jim discusses the labor-intensive demands of large hives, from the physical strain of handling heavy boxes to the increased challenges with swarm management, disease control, and even neighborly relations. Drawing from decades of experience, he shares personal anecdotes—including a memorable encounter with his grandson in an unexpectedly powerful hive—that highlight the sometimes-overwhelming nature of big colonies. But it's not all doom and gloom. Jim acknowledges the undeniable benefits of strong hives, such as impressive honey production and robust pollination capabilities. However, he reminds us that bigger isn't always better, especially when considering the beekeeper's goals, physical limitations, and local environment. Whether you prefer managing small, easy-to-handle colonies or love the challenge of bustling hives bursting with bees, this episode will give you plenty to think about. Tune in for candid reflections, practical advice, and a fresh perspective on what it really means to manage big colonies. Thank you for listening!
