Jemaine Clement joins Nerdtropolis Mayor Sean Tajipour on Reel Insights to talk about Hulu's new six-part Original series Alice and Steve. In this conversation, Clement breaks down playing Steve, a man whose relationship with his best friend Alice is turned upside down when he starts dating her 26-year-old daughter, Izzy.Clement opens up about the messy emotional chaos at the center of Alice and Steve, including why Izzy may actually be one of the most mature characters in the story and how Joel Fry's Daniel brings a grounded, hilarious presence to the series. He also talks about the “carousels of baggage” adults bring into love, friendship and conflict, and why people can sometimes give great relationship advice while still struggling in their own relationships. The conversation also dives into where Steve lands on the Jemaine Clement chaos scale. Clement explains how Steve lives between two different images of himself, sometimes confident and sometimes not confident at all, while getting pulled into a situation that becomes increasingly dramatic. He also shares why Alice and Steve feels more grounded and realistic than many of the roles he is usually known for, even as the story pushes its characters to extremes.Clement also reflects on the real friendships that helped him understand Steve and Alice's bond, including the kind of friends who still feel close no matter how much time has passed. Plus, Sean and Jemaine talk about emotional maturity, adult friendship, complicated love, revenge and what makes Alice and Steve a messy anti-romantic comedy.Visit Nerdtropolis.comFacebook.com/nerdtropolisInstagram.com/nerdtropolisTwitter.com/nerdtropolisTikTok.com/@nerdtropolis
Listed as a British “wrong-com,” the first episode of Alice and Steve covers the inciting incident that sets up the premise of this six-episode series. You probably already know Jemaine Clement and Nicola Walker, just like we knew Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne going into Platonic. The difference is that this one leans confidently British, with a plot that veers more toward sharp awkwardness than anything particularly heartwarming.Created by Sex Education writer Sophie Goodhart, this new Hulu/Disney+ series arrives right around midyear, just as we're starting to get a good impression of what 2026 TV is all about. On the podcast, we run down the episode, ask the big questions, make comparisons, discuss the reception, and, of course, give our rating.Tune in and enjoy. Welcome to Today's Episode.

First up this week, it's Best Medicine, a drama comedy on Sky and the streaming service Now. It's a US remake of Doc Martin, the popular ITV series starring Martin Clunes. This new series features Josh Charles as Dr Martin Best, a straight talking doctor who escapes from his high paid hospital role in Chicago to become a GP in Maine.Next, there's a new documentary on Channel 4, Free Nelson Mandela. This three part series follows Nelson's life story from activist and revolutionary to prisoner, and how his campaign for freedom during his 27 year imprisonment and his activism paved the way for democracy for South Africa. Finally, Disney+ brings us Alice and Steve, a new comedy written by Sophie Goodhart (who wrote for Sex Education). This dark comedy follows best friends Steve (played by Jemaine Clement) and Alice (Nicola Walker). It all goes south when Steve starts dating Alice's 26 year-old daughter Izzy.Remember you can email mustwatch@bbc.co.uk to have your say.

There are some that laugh at James Cameron's Avatar movies but Cameron, so far, has always got the last laugh on them all the way to the bank. The first two Avatar movies are the first and third highest grossing movies of all times, not accounting for inflation. Take that internet trolls! Now Cameron is looking to laugh again with his third Avatar movie, “Avatar: Fire And Ash.” Our main characters, Jake Sully, and his Na'vi wife, Neytiri return to pick up the pieces on Pandora after the chaos from the last movie. They have to deal with an unspeakable tragedy in their family, all the while, trying to evade capture, or worse, by the evil Colonel Quaritch and the “sky people.” They desperately want Jake for what they see as treason, and also to be able to exploit the planet Pandora for all its resources. Now a potentially game-changing development, involving human breathing on Pandora, creates an even bigger potential threat to the Na'vi. Commonly referred to Dances With Smurfs or Ferngully In Space, the Avatar movies are Cameron's environmentalist afterschool specials wrapped up in a CGI extravaganza. Is it worth seeing at the theater? Check out this episode to find out! “Avatar: Fire And Ash” stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, David Thewlis and Jack Champion. James Cameron has returned to take us on a third trip to Pandora. Avatar: Fire and Ash is now out in cinemas worldwide and I finally, FINALLY had the chance to see the film yesterday after a long week of packing and traveling. This has easily been one of my most anticipated films of the year and pretty easily so because back in September 2022, I fell in love with this franchise. Finally having the chance to see the first Avatar in cinemas during its theatrical release-release was a game-changing cinematic experience for me and completely changed my perspective on a film that I felt very lukewarm to before that point. And then in December, Avatar: The Way of Water became a smash box office hit and, as far as I'm concerned, surpassed the first film by almost every single measure of quality. So, is the magic and awe of Pandora still alive? Is Avatar: Fire and Ash the best film in the trilogy? Find out all the answers in this review!Avatar: Fire and Ash:Directed by: James CameronScreenplay by: James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda SilverStory by: James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, Shane SalernoBased on charaacters created by: James CameronProduced by: Jon Landau, James CameronExeucutive Producers: Richard Baneham, Rae Sanchini, Peter M. pWotD Episode 3151: Avatar: Fire and Ash Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 173,847 views on Wednesday, 17 December 2025 our article of the day is Avatar: Fire and Ash.Avatar: Fire and Ash is a 2025 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Distributed by 20th Century Studios and produced by Lightstorm Entertainment, it is the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and the third installment in the Avatar franchise. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo and Duane Evans, Jr. reprise their roles from the previous films, while Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis join the cast.Cameron, who had stated in mid-2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar (2009) if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in early 2010 following the success of the first film, with the then-untitled Avatar 3 aiming for a December 2015 release. However, the addition of two more sequels (four in total), and the development of new technology required to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. Avatar: Fire and Ash started shooting simultaneously with The Way of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming completed in late December 2020, after over three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of over $400 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made.Avatar: Fire and Ash had its world premiere at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, on December 1, 2025, and was first released in Germany and Phillipines on December 17, 2025, and in the United States on December 19. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the visuals, characters, performances, and action but criticized the runtime and simplicity of the plot. Two additional sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are in various stages of production and are scheduled to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:12 UTC on Thursday, 18 December 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Avatar: Fire and Ash on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Geraint.

Send us a textWe've consulted our AI theme overlords and spun the shake-up wheel once again so we can once again bring you the next round of the Movie Roulette Tuesday Podcast! In this round we'll be dealing with the theme of "past lives". Our picks will be restricted to films that deal with reincarnation, past experiences or characters who must confront their past to move forward. With this theme in mind our first shake-up is "must be a documentary or mockumentary", and what better pick for this than the 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows. Directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, it follows the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) - three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life's obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. In our normal fashion we delve into tangents on reincarnation, rude interactions at our places of work, complaints about the current seasonal weather and our complaints on modern documentaries in general.

The dryly funny new Apple TV+ series Time Bandits reimagines the 1981 Terry Gilliam film of the same name. A squad of inept thieves — including their sort-of leader, played by Lisa Kudrow — have stolen a map of the universe. They use it to jump through portals to various time periods to steal stuff. One jump takes them into the bedroom of a British kid (Kal-El Tuck), who tags along as they're chased by Taika Waititi's Supreme Being and Jemaine Clement's Pure Evil.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
