The Cinema Bums are joined by Sundae Horn to kick off their Taika Waititi miniseries by discussing his first film, Eagle vs. Shark! Taika Waititi was the first-ever winner of Bumtober, a month-long bracket battle where our listeners submitted and chose a series for the Bums to cover. What made Taika beat out everyone else for the top prize? How does his first film hold up? Why does this comedy movie feel so sad? To answer these questions, we are joined by a very special guest, 26 years in the making: Emmet's own mother. Tune in to hear Emmet mostly talk about the Lord of the Rings, Wade get ousted for his controversial holiday movie take, and Sundae attempt to discern the national mood of New Zealand. It's a whole new year and a whole new miniseries on Cinema Bums, and we couldn't think of a better way to kick it off. Thank you for listening, and please enjoy!

In this episode of The Chris and Andre Show, friend-of-the-show Joe is back to give his review of Spider-Man: No Way Home and his thoughts on Marvel versus DC (and how DC keeps getting their heroes wrong!), but not before Chris and Andre duke it out over politics, technocratic billionaires, and John Elway's performance as the Denver Broncos' General Manager. (00:00:00) Intros - Friend-of-the-show Joe is back this week after taking last week off to celebrate his daughter's birthday. (00:05:39) Politics - Andre is still pissed at Democrats for not taking the small wins where they can get them and instead trying to shoehorn everything into one large bill, Chris is mad at Joe Manchin for his constant need for attention, and all three guys agree that black lawmakers should do more than just threaten to cut off K St. (00:33:29) Life - Andre says it's time to stop worshiping billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, the guys discuss just what it is that people find entertaining about Joe Rogan, and the unfairness of punishments are on full display in the case of a truck driver sentenced to 110 years for a deadly accident. (01:01:12) Sports - Andre called it: Teddy Bridgewater nearly got himself killed this past weekend diving head-first. He's ready for the end of the Bridgewater era and says it's time for the Broncos to just clean house altogether. Chris says it all comes back to John Elway, which Andre doesn't want to hear. (01:06:49) Pop Culture - Joe and Chris both saw Spiderman: No Way Home this past weekend and give their spoiler-free review (since Andre hasn't gotten to see it yet). The guys also discuss Witcher Season 2, a great YouTube video about the Problem with DC's Heroes, which leads to a direct comparison of DC and Marvel, and Andre tries to explain to Chris why he disliked Taika Waititi so much. (02:21:38) Technology - Major shout out to Casey Faris who has helped the show tremendously through his plethora of Davinci Resolve and Fusion tutorial videos. The guys are working to improve the overall production value of the show and have Casey to thank for a lot of the stuff they've learned along the way.

Netflix has acquired the works of Roald Dahl, the late British author of famous children's books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The video streaming giant said on Sept. 22 that it acquired Roald Dahl Story Co., which manages the rights to the author's characters and stories. Netflix did not say how much it paid. The two companies had already struck a deal in 2018 to create animated TV series based on Dahl's books. They include one series based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to be directed by filmmaker Taika Waititi. The new deal paves the way for Netflix to bring all of the author's back catalog to screens. Dahl died in 1990 at age 74, but his books are still popular with young readers. More than 300 million copies have been sold worldwide, and they have been translated into 63 languages. (AP) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.

After the collapse of Jodorowsky's Dune project, the work that went into it went on to influence countless other future film projects, but it also provided the inspiration for another work: the comic series THE INCAL, which began in 1981 in the pages of Metal Hurlant (aka Heavy Metal) and continued the collaboration between Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius (aka Jean Giraud). That story took seven years to tell, finally finishing in 1988. Since then there's been a prequel (Before The Incal), an abandoned sequel with Moebius (After The Incal) and a true sequel finished in 2014 (Final Incal). On this episode of JodoWOWsky we check out the entire Incal saga, starting with Jodorowsky's comic background and his first work with Moebius before moving into discussing each novel, before finishing with some final thoughts on the series, as well as our thoughts on the upcoming film version directed by Taika Waititi. It's called Reservation Dogs, it was created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, and it is about four Indigenous kids from Oklahoma dreaming of escape to California. To discuss this funny, heartbreaking show, Paul and Arlo are joined by pop culture writer extraordinaire Nikki Stafford. The gang discusses the show's subtle storytelling, its incredible cast, the way Harjo and his team thread the needle between tragedy and comedy, and how this series breaks ground for mainstream Native representation in America. Plus, Arlo almost killed Paul.   NEXT: second time's the charm; hopefully, we'll actually do a Four-Color Flashback on John Layman and Afu Chan's Outer Darkness.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:42  -  Intro / Guest 00:10:45  -  Reservation Dogs 01:25:45  -  Outro / Next     LINKS   ‘Stoodis!' & ‘Skoden' — ‘Reservation Dogs' Puts NDN Slang in Focus by Jeanette Centeno, powwows.com   “‘Reservation Dogs' Co-Creators Sterlin Harjo & Taika Waititi Talk Using Humor “To Subvert Expectations” In Indigenous Representation – TCA” by Alexandra Del Rosario, Deadline   “'Reservation Dogs' Creator Talks New FX Series,” All Things Considered “‘Reservation Dogs': The Interview” by Jonathan Sims, The Paper. Let's talk science fiction. And let's talk about it with Mark Waid. Wait, what? Oh yes, this episode is a very special and wild Creator Corner conversation. We sit down with the Humanoids Publisher (and writer behind Kingdom Come, Justice League: The Tower of Babel, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Widow - AHHHHHHH! So Many!) to discuss their new graphic novel adventure, The History of Science Fiction. Waid considers this comic by Xavier Dollo and Djibril Morissette-Phan "the crown jewel" produced in his time as Humanoids Publisher. Why? Well, we get into it. The comic is no dusty text; it's an exciting exploration of this beautiful genre that was once considered pop culture trash. Dollo and Morissette-Phan dig into its history, making the many sci-fi creators and their creations characters within their narrative, and it's a stunning achievement. The History of Science Fiction also serves as this beautiful excuse to talk with Waid about the genre itself. The influences it has had on him and where he considers his own work rests within it. This discussion is a new favorite (it seems like we say that every other week), and we think you'll grab a lot from it. And, yes, we do talk about Taika Waititi taking on The Incal. The History of Science Fiction will publish on November 23rd. Pre-order your copy at your favorite comic shop, or click HERE. (Pause) Now, this was initially announced as a 10-issue series. Did you always have more stories in the tank if it were to get renewed, or did you expand your original plans when you got confirmation of more issues? You recently mentioned on Twitter that you're drawn to writing characters who give us "a unique window unto humanity, people — why we are the way that we are." What is it about the Swamp Thing - and Levi Kamei, in particular - that lends itself to telling those kinds of stories?Themes of familial duty and colonialism have been an especially strong component of the last few issues. Was that part of your original conception of the series, or is that something that has evolved as the book has continued?Mike Perkins and Mike Spicer have been creating some really incredible imagery, particularly when it comes to the delineation of the flashbacks in recent issues. Meanwhile, Aditya Bidikar has made Swampy's voice feel like it's rumbling right off the page. What has that collaboration process been like with all three?Levi's brother Jacob has been teased from the start and makes an appearance in the latest issue, what makes their brotherhood so important to the narrative itself? While it was unclear what generated this plant-fueled apocalypse in Future State, Levi's reunion with Jacob suggests that Hedera's corrosive influence on the Green may be leading to this potential outcome. Is this an off base theory?!We're obviously thrilled to hear that this story will be continuing. Anything you want to tease/any foreboding words of warning for the reader about what's ahead?  (Maybe: Might we see a return to the world of Future State: Swamp Thing?)
