What We Do in the Shadows Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join hosts Coy Jandreau and Andrew Gordon as they sink their fangs into the hilarious world of the 2014 comedy mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows. Directed by Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), this cult favorite follows a group of eccentric vampire roommates in Wellington, New Zealand, as they navigate the absurd challenges of modern life while clinging to centuries-old traditions. Taika Waititi dazzles as the suave and quirky vampire Viago, infusing the film with his signature humor, along with Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, Men in Black III) as the world-weary vampire Vladislav, Jonathan Brugh (Thor: Love and Thunder) as the rebellious Deacon, & Ben Fransham (Ash vs. Evil Dead, Time Bandits) rounds out the crew as the ancient & enigmatic Petyr. Coy & Andrew break down every iconic moment—from the mockumentary-style interviews that hilariously recontextualize vampire myths, to the absurd vampire council scenes and clever parodies of modern life that have made this film a perennial cult classic. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, join us for an in-depth reaction and review that celebrates every bite of this uniquely funny flick! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 14, 2025 is: bamboozle bam-BOO-zul verb To bamboozle someone is to deceive, trick, or confuse them. // The salesperson bamboozled us into getting a more expensive item than we had planned to buy. See the entry > Examples: "'We're not trying to make a perfect film that's, like, got a twist: Oh my God, the coach is a ghost! We're not out to bamboozle audiences or get awards or anything,' [Taika] Waititi told Polygon. The director continued, 'We want to make a nice movie, a true story about a football team, and the only message is, "Be happy and don't live in the past."'" — Monica Mercuri, Forbes, 20 Feb. 2024 Did you know? In 1710, Irish author Jonathan Swift wrote an article on "the continual Corruption of our English Tongue" in which he complained of "the Choice of certain Words invented by some pretty Fellows." (Note that pretty originally meant "artful, clever.") Among the inventions Swift disliked was bamboozle, which was used by contemporary criminals. Beyond those who favored the word, little is known of its early days, but the word has clearly defied Swift's assertion that "All new affected Modes of Speech ... are the first perishing Parts in any Language." With its first syllable like a sound effect, bamboozle hints at mystification or magic when it is used to mean "to confuse, frustrate, or perplex," as in "The batters were bamboozled by the pitcher's dazzling curveball."
Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Well, guys, if you enjoyed part 1 of my epic trip across to New Zealand then get yourself a cold one, sit back, relax, and get ready to enjoy the second part of the story. If you didn't catch part 1 earlier this week then make sure you go back and listen to that first. We pick up the journey at the start of day 3, and head straight to the iconic Waihau bay. This stunning area was made famous by Taika Waititi's film ‘Boy', and oh man was it special; what a way to kick off the second half of the trip. After some delicious home made ice cream at the Pacific Coast Macadamia Store we cracked on down the coast. I bumped into a fella called Giles who was undertaking a similar bikepacking trip with his son, and we cracked open a few Gizzy Golds and yarned into the evening. Heading back down the coast towards Gisborne we took in more stunning views, and surveyed the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle that struck the region back in 2023. Still in the cleanup stages, it's clear to see how the disaster decimated the land and the sea, but the way the Māori people have rallied around each other and is really heartening, and left us all feeling pretty inspired. What better way to wrap up a trip through some of the hottest surfing on the planet than with a quick lesson? I was taken out into the water with legendary local surfer, Holly Quinn, who showed me how to master the waves and helped me get up. We sealed off the adventure by visiting Sunshine brewery; the home of the iconic Gizzy Gold which I'd become so familiar with over the week. Honestly, guys, if you ever get the chance to head out to the North West coast of the North Island and explore Gisborne and the surrounding area - jump on it; you won't regret it. I hope you really enjoyed listening to these two eps; I had an amazing time and I'm really grateful to Tairāwhiti Gisborne - the Gisborne Tourism Board - for making it happen. If you want to read more about my trip and see some of the incredible pictures, check out this cracking feature by our friends at FLOW MOUNTAIN BIKE. Cheers, Mitch! Send us a textWe've consulted our AI theme overlords and spun the shake-up wheel once again so we can once again bring you the next round of the Movie Roulette Tuesday Podcast! In this round we'll be dealing with the theme of "past lives". Our picks will be restricted to films that deal with reincarnation, past experiences or characters who must confront their past to move forward. With this theme in mind our first shake-up is "must be a documentary or mockumentary", and what better pick for this than the 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows. Directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, it follows the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) - three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life's obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. In our normal fashion we delve into tangents on reincarnation, rude interactions at our places of work, complaints about the current seasonal weather and our complaints on modern documentaries in general.

En we staan even stil bij de dure reclamespot ‘The Boy and the Octopus' (2024) van Taika Waititi. Al bij al is Disney niets voor Roosje. Maar uitgerekend dat heeft haar al veel tijd en geld uitgespaard.

In this conversation, recorded the morning after the presidential election, comedy phenom Tig Notaro joins Jen and Amy (donned head to toe in black in mourning) to unpack the events of the day and to help them find their happy place in the world again, which she accomplishes with tactical success. By the end of the show, they've laughed so hard, they've forgotten most of their cares. In this episode, Tig regales us with her journey as an Emmy and Grammy-nominated comedian, the influence of her free-spirited mother, and how her family dynamics (and a few hilarious stories from her boys) have shaped her comedy. She also reflects on her journey of authenticity, what it means to be an icon in the LGBTQ+ community, and the significance of being true to oneself. In Rant or Rave, Jen and Amy muse about whether or not they have the chops to make it in stand-up, and we learn that Amy definitely has a deep well of material at her disposal. Speaking of which, be sure to listen for Tig's story about the weirdest gig she's ever performed! *** Thought-provoking Quotes: One of the things my mother told me growing up was to tell everyone to go to hell if they had a problem with me. And I certainly do not walk around telling everyone to go to hell but I think there's this thing in me, whether you know I was told that or not, I think people can tell that I don't have a desperation and I'm not going to do backflips for anybody. – Tig Notaro I didn't bust out of the closet. I went through my own process of figuring things out. I wasn't born knowing I was gay. When I did come out, it was just an authentic feeling and decision of, this is who I am. – Tig Notaro Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Annette Benning - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000906/ John Travolta - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000237 Cher - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000333 Olivia Coleman - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1469236/ Broadchurch - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2249364/ Wicked Little Letters - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20234774/ Taika Waititi - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0169806/ Ryan Reynolds - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005351 Denzel Washington - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000243 Julia Roberts - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000210 Notting Hill - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125439 Jason Bateman - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000867 Smartless Docuseries - https://play.max.com/show/f8c800e3-7639-4883-a0f1-8eb5adbb5ced I'm Just a Person by Tig Notaro - https://amzn.to/3ZjlfQY Tig: A Netflix Documentary - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3986532/ One Mississippi TV series - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4947608/ Under a Rock with Tig Notaro - https://www.amazon.com/Under-Rock-Tig-Notaro/dp/B07SJZ4TKM Kevin Nealon - https://www.instagram.com/kevinnealon/ This American Life with Ira Glass - https://www.thisamericanlife.org/ Star Trek: Discovery - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5171438/ Hello Again - https://www.amazon.com/Tig-Notaro-Hello-Again/dp/B0CV4FNJ27 Guest's Links: Tig's website - https://tignation.com/ Tig's Twitter - https://x.com/tignotaro Tig's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/tignotarocomedy/ Tig's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tig+notaro Handsome Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/handsome/id1702258458 Don't Ask Tig Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dont-ask-tig/id1523507379 Connect with Jen! Maria Johnson and Catholic Mom contributor, Kristina Talbot interview the mother and son filmmakers behind the powerful film about Boys Town, Blue Baby. Matters Media announces the new feature documentary film BLUE BABY that follows eight boys through Fr. Edward J. Flanagan's Boys Town, a prison alternative established in Omaha, Nebraska in 1917. With unprecedented access, filmmakers take the audience inside Boys Town to a world that challenges what people have believed about problem behavior for thousands of years. This is a film that goes beyond the heart of a Catholic priest, and into the real-world impact of what he created. BLUE BABY will be available starting October 9. We need your help to get the word out via your network of influence. About the filmmakers: Josh and Lisa Sabey are the filmmakers behind American Tragedy, The Basement Talks, Blue Baby, and Going Sane. Their film American Tragedy won best documentary at the prestigious Boston Film Festival where it was one of three films screened opening night. (The other two were Terrence Malick's USA premiere of A Hidden Life and Taika Waititi's Jo Jo Rabbit.) Their latest film, The Basement Talks, debuted on Prime Video, Apple TV, and PBS World. We break down the episodes and discuss the original 1981 film, Taika Waititi's humour, Lisa Kudrow's performance and the drawn out season. We also chat the disappearance of Time Bandit Judy mid season. Plus, we answer the age-old question "How many episodes did Nuno sleep through?" Check it out at the link below or wherever you get your favourite podcasts.
Never knew David O'Doherty used to be an underground DJ? It's all here. Russell and David sit down in front of a live studio audience at the Edinburgh Fringe (yes, it was a few weeks ago but we recorded a few, OK!?) to discuss David's DJ hinterland. Also there is when a 13 year old David offered to cycle around Ireland as a newspaper think-piece, and he tells Russell about hanging out with Taika Waititi. This episode bounces along with more energy than a demented space-hopper, with a huge amount of laughs and fascinating stories from David's wonderful brain. You wanna get more David? You can gets you more David for HE IS ON TOUR! His Edinburgh show was brilliant (as always). It's called Ready Steady David O'Doherty. You could get tickets from Ticketmaster, but those guys are firmly on the naughty step at the moment. Better off - use this link HERE to go to David's personal website and get linked directly to the theatres. It'll probably save you some dollar too, but don't quote me on that because I haven't checked and it goes way beyond the call of duty for me to check all those theatre prices, cross-check with the Goliaths and then work out the difference all to save you 50p. I mean I like you, but we've got to have some boundaries. Russell is packing his moose-repellent spray for his is touring in Canada in mere moments. This September, if you're Canadian, heck even if you're not but you happen to be there, check out the dates HERE - in one of the last opportunities to see his latest smash hit tour show live. We shall see you, hear you and smell you next week. So long cowboy/girl/child/baby. Singer, actor, and “The Masked Singer” host Rita Ora joins the show. Over uni and endive salad, Rita tells me about turning down “Eurovision” and Andrew Llyod Webber, how making tea for musicians led to her big break, and the reality TV inspiration for her villainous Queen of Hearts in Disney + film “Descendants: The Rise of Red.” This episode was recorded at Amour in West Hollywood, CA. The dryly funny new Apple TV+ series Time Bandits reimagines the 1981 Terry Gilliam film of the same name. A squad of inept thieves — including their sort-of leader, played by Lisa Kudrow — have stolen a map of the universe. They use it to jump through portals to various time periods to steal stuff. One jump takes them into the bedroom of a British kid (Kal-El Tuck), who tags along as they're chased by Taika Waititi's Supreme Being and Jemaine Clement's Pure Evil.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
