The Earth has once again fallen under the thrall of some wizened cadaverous monsters, who demand our love, our loyalty, and our uncritical acceptance of the Great Monk theory of history. And the only way to throw off their yoke is with a lot of laborious exposition. It's The Lie of the Land. Notes and links Simon quotes from the Yes, Prime Minister episode The Bishop's Gambit (1986), which discusses the Church of England's dual roles as a religion and as “part of the rich social fabric of this country”. The Doctor's broadcasts from a ship somewhere outside the five-mile limit inevitably remind several of us of an episode of The Goodies called Radio Goodies (1970), in which the trio broadcast a pirate radio station into the UK from international waters, satirising real-world events chronicled in the Richard Curtis film The Boat That Rocked (2009). We've mentioned it before: Doctor Who: The Complete History is a ninety-volume book series covering the series from 1963 to 2017, which means that this episode comes up in Volume 88. The books themselves were beautifully produced, but the series is also available digitally. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Last week, Brendan and Bjay's gaming podcast The Bjay BJ Game Show released their latest episode, in which they discuss Lost in Play (2022), a point-and-click adventure set in the imagination of two young children. Brendan, Richard and Steven also recently released another episode of their Avengers podcast The Three Handed Game. It's the first episode of their triptych The Pop Explosion, covering a monochrome Emma Peel episode called Death at Bargain Prices, in which Steed and Mrs Peel go undercover in a London department store and discover a plot to blow up much of the city. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we roared with laughter as Marina Sirtis turned fabulously evil in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called Man of the People.

This week, Tom Salinsky joins us for a World War III–adjacent chat in Madeupistan, while a global apocalypse is self-organising somewhere in Yorkshire. Also, some scary people keep trying to invite us to a free Bible study. It's The Pyramid at the End of the World. Notes and links Brendan compares Extremis to Star Trek: Voyager's Course: Oblivion, which also kills its entire regular cast. Nathan and Joe were not kind to this episode when they watched if for Untitled Star Trek Project. Tom refers to his own less-than-enthusiastic review of Extremis in a blog post from way back in 2017. Joe 90 was a Gerry and Sylvia Anderson supermarionation show from 1968–69, which stars a nine-year-old super spy who wears special glasses which contain the brain patterns of expert adults and enable him to do all of his spy stuff. James refers to Star Trek: The Next Generation's Commander William T Riker as someone who, like the monks, has a real fetish for consent. This deep cut is a reference to the Star Trek podcast The Greatest Generation, which you are only allowed to listen to after you've finished all of Untitled Star Trek Project. The Andromeda Strain is a 1969 book by Michael Crichton and a 1971 film directed by Robert Wise (The Sound of Music, Star Trek: The Motion Picture). In it, an extraterrestrial microbe gets loose in a research station and the staff need to prevent the station's nuclear self-destruct system from releasing an irradiated version of the the microbe into the environment. I know what you're thinking - WTF Happened to The Avengers? Nothing, it was one of the biggest hits ever. Not so fast - we're not talking about the Marvel superhero team-up that shot the MCU into the stratosphere. Instead, we're talking about 1998's misbegotten remake of the classic British spy series, The Avengers. On paper, this should have been a great movie. The Avengers was a classic British TV series starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as super spy agents John Steed and Emma Peel. Their “will they or won't they” chemistry influenced everything from Cheers to Moonlighting, and the show still runs daily in the UK. Given that the show was always considered the best Eurospy franchise outside of James Bond, it should have turned into a massive franchise for Warner Bros. The cast was next-level, with Uma Thurman playing Emma Peel, Ralph Fiennes as John Steed, and James Bond himself, Sean Connery, as the main villain, Sir August de Wynter. So what went wrong? Just about everything, as we'll dig into in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie. For one thing, the finished version of the film clocked in at 89 minutes, about a half hour shorter than intended. Director Jeremiah Chechik found himself saddled with a finished film that didn't make a lick of sense. Given the issues with the cut, instead of being a summer blockbuster, it was dumped to the same late-summer dumping ground we find ourselves in right now (there's a reason nothing really opens until after Labor Day). So dig in and check out this tale of the spy franchise that wasn't. For more MOVIE NEWS, visit: http://www.joblo.com

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on June 26th 2022 This week we welcome back one of our regular contributors, the encyclopaedic and telly fact-filled mind that belongs to STEVE HATCHER, who has suggested that we might want to talk about the movie spin-offs and adaptations of television series that used to feature prominently in the cinemas in the fifties, sixties, and seventies, several of which proved to be very successful, and some of which were decidedly less so. Some of these films have gone on to become the more familiar versions of series that no longer seem to get much airtime simply through their regular appearances on television over the years and decades since they were made, and for many viewers, they might even have become the definitive versions of a whole host of television favourites. Often these films were adaptations of much-loved sitcoms, but also several drama series were deemed worthy of being transferred to the big screen, in colour, sometimes featuring the original television cast, and sometimes bearing little relationship whatsoever with the source material. STEVE has picked out five dramas (as well as five sitcoms which we're going to talk about some other time), for us to talk about as specifically British examples that demonstrate the various ways in which these adaptations were achieved by the film-makers of those eras, and, whilst our conversation might touch upon a few others that spring to mind, it's those five films that we are going to mostly focus our attention on. So sit back as we mull over the most exciting colourful eccentricities of DR WHO AND THE DALEKS, the colourfully dark and compelling re-imagining of QUATERMASS AND THE PIT in the London Underground Station at Hobb's End, the strangely detached environmental disaster that prompts the DOOMWATCH team to not exactly leap into action themselves but instead nominate a proxy, the government assassin CALLAN somehow managing to revisit his own past, and the bizarre, much-truncated, late 1990s re-invention of John Steed and Mrs Emma Peel in THE AVENGERS. We might not get the time to cover all them in any great depth, so there'll be little in the way of my usual VISION ON SOUND nonsenses of the kind that point out details like the future Roj Blake turning up working at Hobb's End that I might usually start to weave the interconnectedness of all things around to intrigue you with, especially as one of those five films does actually obliquely name-check this very show, but I hope you'll enjoy this quick time-trip through some great TV shows dressed up in their best clothes for their various trips to the ROXY and the REGAL. And once we've got back to base, STEVE will return in a few weeks time for a follow-up in which we chat in much the same way about those sitcoms. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 24th 2022 A little over sixty years ago, a television series began that would, in many ways, come to encapsulate a particular view of nineteen sixties Britain that never really went away. It was so popular in certain countries that this particular image of Britain and the British seems to have stuck in their minds and shaped their perception of us ever since. Or perhaps one version of it has, anyway, because THE AVENGERS, the series PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, is joining me to talk about today, went through several incarnations – and lapel carnations – as it progressed through most of the 1960s from its grey, grimy, and gritty origins in 1961, to its colourful, almost pop-art, last hurrah in 1969, and, in many ways, could be said to almost reflect that transformational decade on screen like almost no other television series of its time. Featuring PATRICK MACNEE as John Steed, a charmingly eloquent, and dapper, spy, who wears a bowler hat sometimes cast in stainless steel, and who carries a rolled umbrella which sometimes conceals a sword, who spends his professional career dealing with diabolical master minds intent upon some fiendish, eccentric, and freedom-threatening plot, usually with the assistance of a strong, plucky woman who seems far more adept at handling the rough stuff than he could ever hope to be. CATHY GALE, EMMA PEEL, and TARA KING were those fabulous, ground-breaking, and astonishingly independent women, and were played by three actors destined to become almost as iconic as the series itself: HONOR BLACKMAN, DIANA RIGG, and LINDA THORSEN. Although those other, grittier incarnations, also featured JULIA STEVENS as VENUS SMITH, JON ROLLASON as DR MARTIN KING, and the sublime and ridiculously talented IAN HENDRY who, as DR DAVID KEEL, was there right at the start, might be the person we have to thank for the series even existing at all, but who then chose to leave to pursue other career options, leaving JOHN STEED to step into the breech, and become the calm centre around which the series would carry on though such astonishing changes, not only in the lead actors, but from the technical point of view of switching from live studio videotape, to black and white, and later colour film, and a very successful penetration into the American market. In fact, if any show could be said to demonstrate the evolution of British television in the 1960s, I think THE AVENGERS may be the one that shows it off best, so much so that anyone who watched the 1961 version would barely recognise it as the same show if they tuned in again in 1969, with MOTHER and RHONNDA adding to the cast of eccentric regulars to battle each week with the very cream of 1960s acting talent. This other brainchild of Canadian Television supremo SYDNEY NEWMAN might not be your idea of what the Britain of the 1960s was really like, but it certainly is an image that has persisted since it first aired back in 1961 as a replacement for another series featuring its main star as a police surgeon, right through to its final episode in 1969, and the series was so internationally successful that it even got a fairly successful two year reimagining in the mid-1970s featuring PURDEY and GAMBIT as played by JOANNA LUMLEY and GARETH HUNT. PAUL is unashamedly a fan of the final year featuring TARA KING, so our conversation does inevitably spend a lot of time covering that era, but we do our best to give you a broader overview on our way there. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Tread Perilously enters the annual "Tread Merrily" festivities with the thoroughly British spy series The Avengers and its Christmas-infused episode, "Too Many Christmas Trees." It's the night before Christmas Eve Day and John Steed has been having disturbing dreams about a fellow in the Intelligence section, Father Christmas, and his own reflection. Emma Peel expresses some concern, but invites him to a party at the manor home of famed Charles Dickens collector Brandon Storey. Little does she realize, though, that the source of Steed's problems awaits them at the party. Will a night dressed as Sydney Carton and Oliver Twist lead to an experiment with telepathy? Justin pitches his own stylish 60s spy series with a low-key name: The Conversationalists. Erik proves to have better knowledge of Dickens than Justin. He also reveals the unlikely origins of The Avengers. The British Empire takes a beating. Geography Corner takes on a culinary tone as the pair both praise local eatery The Hat and warn against what it does to their stomachs. The Bond connection gets mentioned, as does The Avengers feature film. Justin ponders the unintentionally horrifying Father Christmas mask in the episode and the nature of the telepaths leads to "the slowest way to kill someone."

Aldous Huxley https://ctgjez.podcaster.de/cal_cast/die-52-wochen-netzwerkchallenge/ Treasure Island for Networkers! Part James Bond, part Wonder Woman, The Avengers epitomized Sixties British Cool on the small screen. The infrastructure for TV broadcasting was slow to be adopted in South Africa, but they had this terrific version of The Avengers from Springbok Radio. The Avengers burst in the door of spy and super-hero adventure drama on South African radio in 1971, starring Donald Monat as John Steed, and Diane Appleby as the wonderful Emma Peel. It was based on the fine TV series, which was very popular from the start in the UK, and is an excellent example of radio's adaptation of the television medium...as it had done with movies all along.Part pop art, part super hero, and part adventure serial... This radio show has all of the excitement and intelligence of the original television hit. Donald Monat has said, "I guess I was aiming to interpret the script in the spirit of the TV series, but in my own way - as my voice is quite different to Patrick's." Patrick McNee played Steed on the original television show, and the radio format, as national TV wasn't available in South Africa until '76, was the way it was popularized there. It was produced as usually six fifteen-minute serial episodes (with space for commercials), very unlike the hour TV show with the entire adventure. The "cliff hanging" segments keep the action moving and always leading up to a thrill to be continued. The quality of production sounds great. The radio stars even caught the fever and appeared to sign autographs as Steed and Peel to promote the show! Exactly as the television show did, it features outlandish, quirky villains, mad scientists, secret organizations and off-the-wall situations. Each adventure presents the Avengers with a Gordian knot of plot twists that they almost always manage to fray with aplomb. (Part James Bond, part Wonder Woman...why not?) A quick scan of the stories give the flavor: "From Venus with Love" is a fine example, featuring a very odd organization with a hidden agenda. Another excellent adventure is "Super Secret Cypher Snatch" the title alone titillates! "Not to be Sneezed At..." are the Avengers. Such madcap multi-parted adventures with two perfectly adept and adroit Avengers is a great radio example of why the pictures in the mind are the most exciting. As for the lovely Emma Peel, you may substitute the television vision of Diana Rigg if you desire.

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 69th episode of "VideoFuzzy," reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 2,900 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Belligerent Optimism," comments on "Grey's Anatomy" segue into overarching themes, and in milestone news, as of this episode I've cataloged Disc 1000 in my Classic Collection! I posted a "throwback Thursday" pic on my VideoFuzzy Facebook page of me and that disc from when I first burned it in April 2009 to when I finally cataloged it last month. Check it out! In Corrections, the release date on the next James Bond, "No Time to Die," has been pushed to next year sometime. Also, I admit to cultural appropriation at times in this production, slipping into voice and characters in my podcast, impressions and other instances. I try to limit the inappropriateness of these instances, but I am aware of them, and if something sounds wrong, please contact me. I'm always trying to do better. In Old Business, I wanted to highlight and celebrate other aspects of comedian Sarah Silverman's work, and wish her a happy 50th in December. In my Friday Night Feature, I find a strong episode of "Grey's Anatomy" on disc 976, centered on a death row inmate who is expressing contrition and a wish that his organs, scheduled for termination at the hand of the state, save a young boy in need of a liver transplant. I pulled up a past episode for some background on the story arcs this fifth-season episode, "Stairway to Heaven," resolves, closing on a stark realization for Izzy Stevens in hallucinating her late boyfriend Denny Duquette. In cross connections, I am struck by how the realities of cancer have touched, darkened, textured and destroyed lives of patients, survivors, friends and families throughout human history. My show title is from an interview by late Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who succumbed to cancer recently. I noted several storylines I'd traced in discs from this set like "Grey's Anatomy," "Nip/Tuck" and "Battlestar Galactica" and other shows in my collection, together with such high-profile losses of Ginsburg, Gwen Ifill, Richard Hatch, Eddie Van Halen and Diana Rigg. In more conventional cross connections, I look at Eric Stolz in "Grey's Anatomy," Dina Meyer in "Nip/Tuck," Gena Rowlands and Marc Vann in "Monk," Andy Richter in "Bones," Danny Strong in "Leverage," Maggie Siff in ABC's "Life on Mars" reboot, Mira Sorvino and Omar Sharif in NBC miniseries "The Last Templar," Tom Irwin in "24" and "LOST," and oh WOW there were just a ton of cross-connections in the office dramedy "Trust Me," including Eric McCormick, Tom Cavanaugh, Tim Russ, Jason O'Mara, Adam Scott, Monica Potter, Griffon Dunn and Rhea Seehorn. I close out by tracing a Golden Thread on Chase Kim, appearing in my recording of "Leverage" on disc 1000. In my classic VHS-to-DVD collection, comments on an episode of "Fringe" open onto a Fond Reflection on the recent passing of Diana Rigg. On a related note, a fan posted this video celebrating the vivacious Mrs. Emma Peel. Also, I've archived a recording from the inauguration of Barack Obama across four discs, with comments on the season 4 finale of "The West Wing," "Battlestar Galactica," "Nip/Tuck" and "South Park," Fox Movie Channel's presentation of "Looking for Richard," and the Turner Classic Movies presentation of "Annie Hall." In my Current direct-to-DVD recordings, comments on "Fargo," "Archer," Syfy's presentation of "Dead Still," IFC's presentation of "Eyes Wide Shut" and the Sundance presentation of "The Green Mile." Plus I trace the rather eye-popping body of work by actor Steven Tobolowsky. Finally, I have updated my Facebook and podcast page to include a "top ten" episode guide for people looking for a quick read-in on this blog and podcast effort. Enjoy!

On the line from Beijing, Chinese pianist Lang Lang discusses his new recordings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, the culmination of a 20-year musical journey for the musician. Mike, as usual, is getting it mixed up with something else. In this episode we talk about a band Scott's apparently obsessed with: Blotto. Who were they? No one knows. Well, we clearly don't at any rate. He talks about a song he remembers (is that possible?). We also talk about Perennial, a local band only some recall. Also discussed is whether or not the 90s local bands listened to Metalshop, let alone metal. Further on the docket is Deep Purple. Remember when they got back together in the 80s? We do and talk about the reunion and album as well as their amazing career of great songs and revolving band members. There's also talk about our friends from Confused?!'s previous metal bands and the amazing names they had in said bands. It's all here: metal, metal and metal. The Pacific Northwest and its relationship with metal is a subject (it really is). Give the horns and crank out this loud (?) podcast of metal!

Charlotte Rampling, like Diana Rigg and many others of her generation, began her career as a 60's fashion model. After bit parts in such well remembered films as A Hard Days Night and The Knack and How to Get It, she stepped into a major role in the seminal Swinging London kitchen sink drama Georgy Girl, which got her noticed and brought over to Italy where she showed up in two WWII related epics that made her famous (and perhaps unintentionally helped kick off a certain infamous and short lived exploitation subgenre in Italy, France and the US): Visconti's The Damned and Liliana Cavani's The Night Porter. Making minor waves and memorable if brief appearances in everything from existential counterculture opuses like Vanishing Point and much feted dramedies like Woody Allen's Stardust Memories to neo-Noirs like Farewell My Lovely and Angel Heart and cheesefests like Zardoz and Orca, tonight we celebrate the cool yet sexually charged Emma Peel-style appeal of the lovely Charlotte Rampling, only here on Weird Scenes! Today’s topic for our super-secret counter-intelligent Spy podcast is The Avengers! No, not that Avengers, the serialized British television show The Avengers, which ran from 1961 to 1969. The Avengers, a kind of satirical, stylized drama, played on the more lighthearted aspects of the Cold War, the space race and the Youthquake. In terms of tone, The Avengers is more Dr. Who than James Bond. The show follows the adventures of John Steed, a British spy, who works for a shadowy organization run by Mother and Father. Throughout the show he is partnered with, at first a forgettable male doctor, and then several far-more-competent, female super-spies, of whom Emma Peel is likely the most famous. The fashion of the era, was an important part of the style and look of the show and many mod designers, such as Pierre Cardin, lent their skills or design to the costuming. While it might be easy to assume that the Avengers only made use of fashion for Cathy Gale, Emma Peel or Tara King, who exemplified different parts of that swinging Mod style, the character of John Steed represents an important part of 1960s fashion, the rise of the Edward Dandy. We’re gonna talk about it all today, or almost all of it, or maybe only a few seasons of it, but we’re definitely going to talk about it a lot. Not to be missed   This title was released in September 2018. It will be exclusively available to buy from the BF website until October 31st 2018, and on general sale after this date. Two agents are dead, and their murderers sound worryingly familiar. A killer gorilla is on the loose, a deadly disease is ravaging a distant country and an eminent doctor has been kidnapped. It's all pretty much business as usual. But when John Steed is called in by his old boss and given an appalling task to complete, at the same time as Tara is given one that's even worse, it becomes clear that the myriad threads of a terrifying scheme are drawing together. The fate of the world hangs in the balance. Steed won't be able to handle this case alone. The Avengers are needed. All of them. Alan Dean Foster (author of over 100 novels of science fiction and fantasy and noted world traveler) is today's featured guest. Many of this interview's topics were made possible only because of Alan's longstanding enthusiasm for traveling to places tourists rarely go. He seeks the places where wildlife is still unspoiled; and where the ancient ways that predate writing still exist. He knows they are fading rapidly, and wants to see them before they are gone forever. Topics include: how cell phones are changing even the third world with amazing speed; primitive cultures accepting technology, and leapfrogging passed the intermediate technologies; the rise of ebooks overseas, as well as how traditional publishers may watch their income evaporate when people buy ebooks online directly from the authors, which would cut publishers out of the loop; how policing oceanic piracy is forcing the naval ships of nations which are normally enemies to cooperate, and how this may build relationships of respect: a precursor to trust. He also shares some personal anecdotes: about writing movie novelizations such as Aliens 1, 2 and 3--and why he didn't write number 4; how he met Diana Rigg (who played Emma Peel on The Avengers) as well as Julie Newmar (who played the original Catwoman on Batman); his trip with James Gurney (author of Dinotopia and illustrator for National Geographic) who joined him on travels through Malta, Tunisia, Morocco, Dakar and Gibraltar. He also described his intention to travel to the Western Indian Ocean, which is part of the area threatened by the pirate's that have been in the news so much lately for hijacking cruise ships and oil tankers and holding everyone aboard hostage, sometimes for many months. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the January 21, 2009 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 64 minutes] While most of his novels involve worlds he has created himself, such as those in his Commonwealth series and Spellsinger series, and those in his various trilogies such as The Damned, The Taken and Icerigger, a portion of his time is spent writing novelizations of successful movies and TV shows. Examples include: the first three Aliens movies, The Chronicles of Riddick, Outland, Clash of the Titans, Starman, The Thing, Alien Nation, Transformers, The Last Starfighter, and the first Star Wars novelization, which he co-wrote with George Lucas. The quality and extent of this body of work won him the 2008 Grand Master award from the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers.

Radio series Between 1971 and 1973 the TV series scripts were adapted for radio for broadcast in South Africa, which did not have television until 1976. The Tara King episodes had the character effectively renamed Emma Peel. Donald Monat played Steed, and Diane Appleby, Mrs Peel. The stories were adapted into between 5 and 7 episodes of approximately 15 minutes each (including adverts) and stripped across the week on the SABC. Currently 19 complete serials survive, all from original reel-to-reel off-air recordings, as well as three episodes of "Escape In Time", from a mixture of sources.
