This week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we're talking about how to increase your chances for having early season buck encounters. We've heard plenty of guests, like Warren Womack, talk about finding hot feed trees. While that's still important for finding deer in general, it doesn't always result in finding bucks. What we've found is the hot feed tree that is secluded in a thick area can often be the first available food source inside a buck's core area. How do you know if it is? RUBS, that's how. In this episode, Parker is sharing an encounter with a buck in Tennessee from this week. How he found the spot and what the buck ended up doing is a scenario that we've seen play out time and time again during early season. Even going so far as to say that statistically in this scenario, having an encounter with the buck laying down the sign might be as high as 50-60%. On the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we really want to be an example of applying tactics that we have heard from our guests and sharing the outcomes. This season will be no different. We're going to be bi-weekly sharing our experiences in the woods through February, largely based on the things we have talked to our guests about. This week, Parker and Drew share their stories of the arrows that have been tossed over the last couple of weeks. Parker has been able to kill a couple of does, and Drew was robbed by an unforeseen branch. That being said, they put the tactics talked about by Dave Owens and Warren Womack in previous episodes and it worked! Listen up! We believe that podcasts like this one really can help you be more successful in the woods. We seriously think that if you will evaluate and adapt our guest's information & our experiences to your hunting situation, it can make you better and find success yourself. Perhaps one of the greatest tactics for the months of September and October is finding where the acorns are dropping and which trees the deer are hitting the hardest. We couldn't think of anyone better to talk on the subject than Mr. Warren Womack. Warren has been a popular guest on our Local Legends series, but as the seasons start getting underway, this is a subject that you'll want to freshen up on. Mr. Womack goes into depth on his scout/hunt strategies, even stating that he believes the best way to hunt is to utilize in season scouting. "All acorns aren't the same", he says as he explains his process for setting up on what he believes are the preferred trees. Listen close and take notes, Mr. Womack has a lot to say in a short amount of time! Warren Womack has been hunting large tracts of public land in the South for the majority of his hunting career. In these large, unbroken, tracts of timber he has spent many hours scouting throughout the hunting season looking for the hot sign he wants to setup on. Unlike the broken habitat of the Midwest, the south has much more potentail for bedding cover. Instead of hunting bedding areas, Warren's main focus is hunting "feed trees." In this episode, Warren talks about how to find these feed trees and how scouting in season has led him to a lot of success hunting public land in the south. Not only has Warren had great success from his many days in the field, he also has some pretty crazy stories of which he shares a few in this episode. Warren Womack has been documenting his hunts in journal form for over 50 years. He can tell you many fine details of hunts that happened decades ago that most wouldn't remember just a few seasons later. Although he has lived in Louisiana his whole life he has traveled and hunted in 13 different states and spent over 1100 nights in his truck camper. He has shot hundreds of deer with a bow and it is evident that those have come from his expert woodsman-ship skills. There has been so much great feedback from the “Local Legends” series this summer. Thank you all so much for listening! In episode 43, Parker, Drew, and new guest Ted Bright, are breaking down some of the key points that each of our Legends hit on. In a series of podcasts like this, it is very easy to not absorb some of the knowledge that our guests were telling us. So you’re going to get another chance to hear it, and how it could apply to your hunting situation. Thank you to our guests Warren Womack, Jamie McCay, Peter Updike & Rick Kiely for coming on the show and sharing with us. We will be doing this series again next year. If you have any guests in mind, hit us up on Facebook: Southern Ground Hunting, or on Instagram: @southerngroundhunting and let us know who you’d like to hear from next year!

Thanks for tuning in to the last interview of the Local Legends Series. In this episode, we’re going away from our norm and interviewing a Yankee! You read that right! Parker is talking with Rick Kiely, or @double_lungerrrr on instagram, from Southern New York about how he kills mature whitetails in high pressure areas. This is especially good for the southern hunter because most of our public areas down south would be considered high pressure. Rick talks about how he scouts and the tactics that set him up to be successful. TAKE NOTES! Be on the lookout very soon for a recap episode where we will break down some of the key points from each of the legends in this series. Huge thanks to Warren Womack, Jamie McCay, Peter Updike, & Rick Kiely for sharing your passion with all of us! And thank you, the listeners, for being such a huge support to Southern Ground, and keeping up with everything through the series! Hopefully this has kept you fired up through the off-season and helped you get ready for the quickly approaching fall.

In this episode I have the great pleasure of talking to an absolute legend,: Mr. Warren Womack. Warren is a 75 year old Louisiana bowhunter who has been hunting since he was 12 years old. This guy knows how to get it done. Currently there are some tactics being used by hardcore hunters that some consider "new". Going in deep. Backpacking. Mobile hunting. Quartering and packing deer out instead of dragging it for miles. Well, Warren has done ALL of that for decades, long before it was cool! Not only that, but at the ripe age of 71, he decides to try out saddle hunting! It was an absolute pleasure to talk to Warren and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. If you like this episode, please subscribe and share. Most importantly, please leave a RATING! Thanks for listening! Emrah
Welcome to the first episode of the Southern Ground “Local Legends” series. It kicks off with a bang as Parker is joined by a true southern gentleman, the legendary Warren Womack. At 75 years old, Mr. Womack has story after story of his successful time spent in the Louisiana woods over the years. He discusses the tactics that have put over 350 deer in the back of his truck. That’s an impressive number, but perhaps the most impressive is the fact that most of those were with traditional archery gear. This episode is full of great knowledge, including a great conversation about primary feed trees. They also discuss an aspect of Mr. Womack’s hunting life that is nothing short of impressive. Dating back to the 1960’s, he has documented every single hunt. Not just that, but every detail you can imagine is included in his documentation. There are so many things that earn Warren the title of “Local Legend”, but don’t just read it here! Take a listen! Topics Discussed: Public Land Primary Feed Trees Saddle Hunting Traditional Archery Ultralight treestands Documenting Hunts Evolution of the southern deer herd
