In this episode of Voices of Otolaryngology, Soham Roy, MD, MBA, draws on his experience as a mentor to guide early-career surgeons through one of medicine's most pivotal transitions: moving from training into independent practice. Dr. Roy shares the framework he uses when advising residents, fellows, and early-career physicians: define success on your own terms, understand what truly brings fulfillment, and avoid the pressure to find a "perfect" first job. He also offers pragmatic guidance on evaluating today's evolving practice landscape and stresses the importance of building an expert advisory team to protect your future. Ultimately, Dr. Roy reminds young physicians that their legacy won't be defined by any single surgery, but by the lasting, positive impact they leave on their patients, colleagues, and loved ones.

How do you tend to define success? Is it an external outcome you pursue, or is it something personal you feel ‘close in’? I’ve been preparing for our next set of Serenity Island Picnics. I’m considering how being more experimental might affect my understanding of success. I share a few of these observations in this short episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast. The Return to Serenity Island combines structured resources with a guided creative journey, offering a space for more experimental thinkers to explore change, personal growth, and ambition without the pressure of performance or rigid goal-setting. It appeals to those who view life as a mysterious treasure island to explore rather than a checklist of predetermined items to tick off. https://youtu.be/AFQlxKUNm60 What Does Close-In Success Feel Like? I find more satisfaction in the process of writing and producing a song than in completing it. Hearing a song on the radio doesn’t give me a greater sense of success than the mini-breakthroughs and connecting the dots as it emerges. However, I can downplay the importance of these close-in success moments. Absorbing outcome-oriented metrics can make it seem as though those don’t matter, and that true success lies in pursuing bigger goals. In The Return to Serenity Island, we connect real-world areas with map regions to recognise micro-moments and small glimmers of ‘close-in success’ in everyday life. Seeing Something Universal in Particular Situations A big reason I keep making videos about The Let Them Saga is what it represents. The story got a hold of me, and I’ve been unable and unwilling to ignore it. It’s been a strange experience because it is a complete departure from what I normally do. But with an experimental approach to life, pursuits can be driven by an inner compass (values, beliefs, etc.), which can lead us in directions that may seem, on the surface, unusual. In other words, we may connect the dots and see patterns, threaded together by those intrinsic motivations. For example, I’m drawn to the Let Them story because I can see elements of it as both a symptom of and a contributor to the greater challenges we are currently facing in the world. On Serenity Island, we use this compass to help us assess and respond to opportunities, feelings, and thorns that catch our attention as they arise. This enables us to reorient to our own definition of success and feel more confident about the path we’re on, even if it doesn’t make obvious sense to others. For me, I feel “close in success” when I know I am acting in sync with those deeper motivators, rather than in pursuit of a quick result or the perception of growth. It Can Take Me a While to Understand Where Something Fits I’m in awe of people who can grasp concepts quickly and understand how, why and where they fit. It seems to take unfamiliar ideas longer to snap into place for me. But when they do, it can feel like a mini-revelation. I love those aha moments. One of my core priorities while developing The Return to Serenity Island and The Haven was the concept of seasonal return, rhythm and repetition. For many experimental people, this allows ideas to settle and dots to connect. It’s through the familiarity of repetition that something may eventually land for us at the right time, when the conditions are right. False Starts and The Perception of Failure ‘Close-in’ success can look like failure to onlookers. On the experimental path, growth and progress often unfold in non-linear ways. They may appear as fits and starts. Trial, error, quitting, walking away, coming back, forgetting, remembering. Popular conceptual mantras can shape our self-understanding. For example, we learn to value the ability to “always begin with the end in mind, and start with a clear understanding of your destination”. Productivity bros declare that “winners never quit and quitters never win”. Self-help influencers remind us that “the person who has a fixed purpose and backs it with the determination to see it through to the end is the one who succeeds”. From this conceptual perspective, virtue lies in finishing what you start, even if it is no longer necessary, effective or appropriate. But for experimental people, it’s important to develop the ability to discern when it’s time to quit and how to let go sustainably. Nothing is Truly Wasted In an experimental life, nothing is wasted. Every venture yields something to carry forward. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. No, wait. That’s different. In The Return to Serenity Island, we take time to acknowledge and appreciate our resourcefulness. We make peace with letting go and make space to focus on those sources of close-in satisfaction. Many of us carry baggage about letting go, quitting, and changing our minds. It might have been drummed into us that stopping before the end is wasteful. At its most extreme, an outcome-oriented framework holds that the end justifies the means. So long as you get the result, it doesn’t matter how you do it. It also holds that the end undermines the means. If things turn out unfavourably, the whole journey is seen as a waste of time. When The End Justifies and Undermines The Means I saw Stockport County (my team) lose to Carlisle on penalties at Wembley in the League Two playoff final in 2023. After the match, as we walked away from the stadium, I said, “Well, that was a waste of a day.” I was joking, but part of me felt it too, because the result was disappointing. It clouded my perception of the day, especially in the immediate aftermath of that defeat. But the day was otherwise great, full of enjoyable micro-moments. I realise how quickly I can undermine the time I spend caring, crafting, and creating if I hand all the power to the destination. But on the flipside, I can see how easy it is to find more joy in life when I turn that on its head and give power to the joy of the ‘close-in’. Satisfaction in small things comes from bringing real life to the landscapes we map in our imagination around Serenity Island. How Does Close-In Success Feel To YOU? If life were an island, where would you choose to hang out and explore, regardless of measurable results that may or may not follow? What would you love to plant more of in your life? How do you want to respond to unexpected changes, opportunities, and feelings that arise? Why do the choices you make matter? When experimental people build our lives on the foundations of questions like these, the growth we might otherwise try to force takes care of itself. When we view success up close, the path begins to unfold in unexpected, obvious, surprising, intuitive, gradual, and sudden ways. Join us on Serenity Island to explore more. You can choose what you pay at checkout and get access to all the course materials and live events for the next 12 months. It would be lovely to have you aboard. A longtime road-tripper turned group travel professional, he has guided of groups and and down the Mother Road — and created an innovative Route 66 tour experience that travelers of all ages love. Austin joins this episode to share why Route 66 is still an American treasure 100 years after its founding. Plus, we have news about a novel idea for an upcoming presidential library and a Hot Minute about whether fuel surcharges are robbing you blind. Insights from Austin Austin had a lot of insight about why Route 66 road trips still resonate with groups. Here's what he had to say about the advantages of seeing America from the Mother Road: “I tell everyone on my trips to take just one picture each day — one simple shot of whatever they see out the window. When you swipe through those photos after thirteen days, you can really see the transition: cornfields, the Ozarks, open flatlands, and then, suddenly, you're crossing into New Mexico and Arizona. It's not the most scenic drive in America…. But there's no other road that tells the story quite like it does. It gives you a powerful snapshot of the country.”” Plus, he had great perspectives on: Taking risks on new travel concepts Using tours to build meaningful relationships Creating unforgettable moments for tour groups Resources Mentioned in This Episode Learn more about 2 Lane America at 2laneamerica.com. What if the key to entrepreneurial success wasn't just about capital, but about finding your “good peoples”? This week's guest, Brandon Na, founded his venture firm on this very principle, a concept born from a lifelong friendship and a desire to build a network of unselfish, supportive guides for founders. His journey reveals that the path to building something meaningful is often about who you have in your corner. In this conversation, Gary Heldt and Brandon Na explore the realities of the startup world, moving beyond the headlines to discuss what it truly takes to build and scale a business. Brandon shares critical insights on the common pitfalls founders face, the importance of deep self awareness, and how to find a mentor who is genuinely invested in your success. This episode is a masterclass for any entrepreneur who wants to understand the nuances of venture capital, team building, and creating a business that aligns with their personal mission.Key Takeaways → True mentorship is a two way street built on mutual respect and aligned goals. → Self awareness is the most significant and most common obstacle for founders seeking capital. → Understanding your total addressable market is essential before you even begin to build. → Success for a founder doesn't always mean a massive exit; sometimes it means having the wisdom to walk away. → To truly learn a concept, you must be able to teach it to someone else. → We live in a capitalistic society, and access to resources is critical for turning an idea into a reality. If you are navigating the challenges of growing your business, this conversation offers a refreshing perspective on what truly matters. Listen to the full episode for more insights, and consider sharing it with a fellow entrepreneur who could benefit from this guidance. To learn more about Brandon Na's work with early stage founders, you can visit his website at Good Peoples Ventures. Many high-achieving women can lead teams, close deals, and build global careers — yet feel confused, frustrated, or discouraged when it comes to love. Lynda Williams is the founder of the Evolved Woman Program, a relationship coach, and podcast host who helps ambitious women find love without compromising their success. After building a career across three continents in leadership and entrepreneurship, Lynda realized that the same traits driving her professional success were undermining her love life. Through deep inner work, she transformed her relationship patterns and now guides women worldwide through that same shift. In this episode, we explore why professional success does not automatically translate into relationship fulfillment, and how the very mindset that fuels career achievement can quietly sabotage intimacy. What you will learn from this episode: Why do successful women feel confident at work but insecure in dating and relationships. What the "success–love paradox" is and how it shows up in high-achieving women's lives. Why ambition is not a barrier to love — and how to use it as an asset instead. Topics Covered: 02:34 – The success–love paradox for high-achieving women. 06:02 – Why professional confidence doesn't translate to dating confidence. 09:54 – Doing the inner work to understand who you are and what you want. 12:25 – Why traditional dating strategies fail ambitious women. 16:38 – Self-awareness as the foundation of healthy relationships. 20:46 – Why relationships, not achievements, drive long-term happiness. 23:38 – How to balance ambition and love without sacrificing either. Key Takeaways: "Many high-achieving women are incredibly successful on the outside but quietly struggling with self-worth." — Lynda Williams "The problem isn't ambition — it's the disconnect between how women show up at work and in relationships." — Lynda Williams "You don't need to choose between career success and love. Marrit Steenbergen had a heck of a 2025 season. At the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, she touched first in the 100 free, defending her world title from 2024. Then, to end the year, she won 6 gold medals in Lublin at the SC European Championships, where she also set 5 European records. Steenbergen joins us to discuss her big year and her new training style that has brought her success so far. While she's in the water 8-9x per week during much of the season, she's started the last two seasons by only swimming 3 days per week (5x within those three days) and focusing on building strength outside the pool.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the pressure to grow quickly, show up on every social platform, or chase bigger numbers just for the sake of it? If so, this episode is for you. In this episode of the Private Practice Elevation Podcast, Daniel Fava welcomes back psychologist and entrepreneur Melvin Varghese for a heartfelt and insightful conversation about building a private practice (or any type of business) at a pace that aligns with your life and values. Melvin shares how he's intentionally slowed down his business growth to protect his well-being and stay grounded in what really matters: service, sustainability, and family. You'll hear how Selling the Couch grew into a successful course and podcast platform, and why Melvin chose not to scale rapidly, even when there was financial momentum. Instead, he prioritized nervous system regulation, systems, and structure that would allow him to thrive for the long haul, not just sprint for short-term gains. Daniel and Melvin also talk candidly about how personal life seasons, like parenting, caregiving, and health challenges, impact business decisions. Their honest discussion is a reminder that success doesn't have to mean constant hustle. Sometimes, it looks like doing less, more intentionally. Whether you're building a solo practice or branching into online income, you'll come away from this episode with encouragement to define success on your own terms — and the permission to grow at your own pace. This Episode Answers: 1. What does it really mean to build a lifestyle business as a therapist? Melvin breaks down how he's designed his business to support health, family, and legacy over constant hustle. He shares insights from growing Selling the Couch to $12k/month in course income and why he chose to pause and re-evaluate instead of scaling aggressively. 2. How can therapists know which marketing channels to focus on? Rather than trying to be everywhere, Melvin recommends aligning your marketing with your long-term goals. For example, if you want to speak, podcasting or YouTube can build your skills and audience. He shares how he sticks to three core channels to maintain quality and avoid burnout. 3. What's the role of nervous system regulation in business growth? Both Daniel and Melvin reflect on the emotional toll of entrepreneurship. They discuss how rituals like prayer, reflection, golf, and quiet time in nature are essential to managing stress and sustaining a business long-term. Other Key Takeaways: Entrepreneurship is not a race. Slow growth can be strategic and soul-sustaining. Having a team and systems in place doesn't eliminate stress, but it does help with sustainability. There's a natural cap to lifestyle businesses ($250k–$300k/year), and scaling beyond that requires a mindset shift. Your personal life and business are interconnected. Seasons of life should inform business strategy. You don't need to be on every social media platform. Choose what aligns with your energy and vision. Authors We Interviewed on the Podcast Here are the books we featured on the podcast this year. See links to the author interviews. Think Like a Runner by Jeff Horowitz How to Run the Perfect Race by Matt Fitzgerald The Norwegian Method by Brad Culp The Explorer's Gene by Alex Hutchinson Ballistic by Henry Abbott Extreme Balance by Joe DeSena The Runaway Housewives of the Appalachian Trail by Kitty Robinson Fuel for Thought by Renee McGregor Don't Call it a Comeback by Keira D'Amato Lootie's World Run by Marie Leautey The Running Ground by Nicolas Thompson Angie's Top 10 Non-Fiction Reads: The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr Memoir is one of my favorite genres and this book takes a peak behind the scenes on writing an engaging memoir. In fact, Mary Karr weaves in so many personal antidotes that it doesn't feel like a how-to book at all. Some of the core principles she talks about have to do with dealing with the truth as you remember it, turning vulnerability into art, and finding your unique story. Everyone from the causal reader to someone who wants to write a memoir will enjoy this book. Awake by Jen Hatmaker I've followed Jen Hatmakes on Instagram for a number of years and she has a very funny and relatable way of sharing her life. Her latest book is a memoir and talks about the dissolution of her 25 year marriage and how she had to come awake to many important areas in her life as a result. Bad Therapy- Why The Kids aren't Growing Up by Abigail Shrier The author is an investigative journalist who argues that aspects of the mental health industry is harming American children, not helping them but over-diagnosing and over-treating normal struggles. It's important to get children the mental health help that they need but Shrier warns that normal development challenges and emotions are sometimes mislabeled as mental disorders which can lead children to adopt an “illness identity.” It Didn't Start With You -How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn This book talks about how trauma and epigenetic are linked. Trauma can change how our genes work and influence stress responses, health, and mood and these alterations can be passed down to future generations, which can help explain intergenerational trauma. This was a very eye opening book and helpful for anyone processing struggles linked to family history. The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs by Joel Salatin Since reading Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma, I've been working on getting the meat our family eats from ethically sustainable sources. Joel Salatin, owner and operator of Polyface Farms, makes the case for how farming and ranching practices need to change (for the good of the environment, the animals, the farmer, and society in general). Inner Excellence by Jim Murphy This is a book that was first published back in 2009 and was updated in 2020. It has been used by many professional athletes and high achievers to develop a stronger mental and emotional game. NFL player, A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles, was filmed reading this book on the sidelines of a January 2025 playoff game and the book started selling thousands of copies. Some of the principles in the book that resonated with me were detaching self-worth from outcomes so that your identity isn't tied to results or achievements. Instead of asking, “How did I do?” Ask, “What did I learn.” Another important take-away was learning to gain control over my inner world. We don't have to believe everything our mind tells us. Yes, we should recognize emotions and thoughts but come back to our core values to develop self-mastery. Estrogen Matters -Why Taking Hormones in Menopause Can Improve Women's Well-Being and Lengthen Their Lives- Without Raising the Risk of Breast Cancer (Revised and Updated) by Avrum Bluming and Carol Tavris As a woman in perimenopause I've been educating myself on how to make this transition in life work for me. As a result I started using HRT two years ago and it has improved my life physically, mentally, and emotionally. Thankfully the FDA removed the black box warning on HRT in 2025 after years of misinformation. This book is a must read for women in their mid-30's and up, those who have experienced surgical menopause, or anyone who wants to understand the role of estrogen more completely. From Strength to Strength– Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life by Arthur C. Brooks Brooks is a Harvard professor and happiness columnist for The Atlantic. He draws on philosophy, social science, biography, and spirituality to offer a helpful roadmap for aging well in the second half of life. In order to embrace, and not fight, the inevitable decline we need to redefine success (moving away from being primarily validated by money or job titles) and look to internal measures like a deeper sense of purpose, wisdom, strong relationships, and service to others. Nuclear War: A Scenario by Annie Jacobson Annie Jacobson is one of those authors from which I will read anything she writes. In the rather bleak (but fascinating) book she lays out the history of nuclear programs throughout the world and presents a scenario in which nuclear weapons are used. Spoiler alert- there are no good outcomes. Breath- The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor I've struggled with allergies since childhood, dealing with a lot of nasal congestion. As a result I was a mouth breather and this book challenged me to take a look at my breathing patterns and make some changes. Over the course of a year I trained myself to breathe through my nose during the day (but nighttime was a bigger challenge). A few months ago I started using mouth tape at night (and an airflow clip nasal dilator called Snore Less Now to open up my airway). I've experienced better mouth hygiene and deeper sleep as a result. Honorable Mentions (nonfiction) Hidden Potential by Adam Grant All the Way to the River by Elizabeth Gilbert Slow Productivity by Cal Newport Evidence Not Seen by Darlene Deibler Rose Revenge of The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith The Next Conversation by Jefferson Fisher Angie's Top 10 Fiction Reads: The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny (#19 in the Armand Gamache series) If you enjoy mysteries and thrillers this series is excellent. I've particularly enjoyed listening to them on audiobook since I'm not a French speaker and would probably mispronounce many names and places otherwise. The Life Impossible by Matt Haig I've enjoyed every book that author Matt Haig has written and this one was no exception. The Life Impossible follows a retired math teacher named Grace who is grieving the loss of her husband and son. She receives an unexpected inheritance which forces her outside her comfort zone, helping her to deal with her past and find new purpose for the future. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver This book is a modern retelling of Charles Dicken's David Coperfield. It follows a boy named Damon Fields who is born into poverty in modern rural Appalachia. He has a very tumultuous life particularly because of the weakness of the foster care system. The book deals with some very heavy subjects but it's ultimately a story of resilience and the power of finding hope in community and through art. The Burning White by Brent Weeks This is the fifth and final book in the Lightbringer Series, a modern fantasy set in a world governed by light and the magic of Chromaturgy. In this world, some people called drafters have the ability to harness light to create a physical substance called “luxin.” Each color has unique powers and identity and the drafter is changed over time. Red Rising Series by Pierce Brown My teens had read this series a few years ago so I was a bit late to the game. But once I finished the first book, Red Rising, I devoured the other five in this fantasy/sci-fi series and am eagerly waiting for the final book to be released next summer. The series centers on class warfare because of a rigid caste system and the main character gets involved in an attempted revolution. This fast paced series is full of action, violence and is set in space. The Measure by Nikki Erlick In this book everyone who reaches a specific age receives a box revealing their lifespan. The story follows eight people who wrestle with the decision whether to open their boxes or not and what to do with the information they get. Ultimately it's an uplifting book that encourages us to live life to the fullest. Twice by Mitch Albom This is a magical realism novel about a boy named Alfie who discovers that he gets two chances at everything in his life. It's a very engaging storyline (which kept me guessing until the end). It really made me see even more value in imperfection and that growth comes from learning. Marble Hall Murders by Anthony Horowitz This mystery follows freelance editor Susan Ryleland who finds herself unwillingly entangled in the death of an author whose book she is working on. I enjoy a mystery that keeps me guessing. The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai I enjoyed the audiobook version of this book which follows the story of Sonia and Sunny who are both Indian immigrants to the United States who are navigating love, family, country, class, and race. Trevor's Top Reads in 2025: Trevor managed to finish 41 books last year. These ones rose to the top: How the Irish Saved Civilization -The Untold Story of Ireland’s Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe by Thomas Cahill. Basically, the Irish saved civilization because their monasteries preserved classical texts, learning, and book making after the fall of the Roman Empire. Irish monks later established monasteries on continental Europe which became centers of learning. American Nations -A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America by Colin Woodard. This was a paradigm shaping book, it provides the best explanation for regional differences in the USA. As You Wish -Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride (1987) by Cary Elwes. If you love the movie, listen to the audio book to Cary Elwes and other cast members share behind-the-scenes stories. The Shortest History of Ancient Rome -A Millennium of Western Civilization, from Kingdom to Republic to Empire: A Retelling for Our Times by Ross King. Trevor is a big fan of the Shortest History series because they provide a short overviews without getting too myopic or tedious. Mark Twain by Ron Chernow. This is a 1,200 page tome or 45 hours on audio book. Fun fact! Twain smoked between 22-40 cigars per day. Let’s end with some Mark Twain quotes: “The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd druther not.” “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter”. “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.” “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them”.

Joanne McNally is a hilarious woman. Her comedy has resonated with people all over the world, with her tours selling out wherever she goes, making history as the first Irish female comic to headline Dublin's 3Arena. And with her podcast, ‘My Therapist Ghosted Me', Joanne has become one of the most compelling, unfiltered voices in comedy right now. What I love about Joanne is that she didn't follow the “perfect plan”. She built her comedy career in her thirties after realising she wasn't living the life she actually wanted. Feeling unfulfilled and eager to tap into her creative side, she took the most vulnerable parts of her past - being adopted and recovering from an eating disorder - and turned them into comedy that's honest, fearless and completely her.And that's why people can't get enough of her. She's witty, she's brutally truthful and genuinely hilarious. We cover:What is was like being adopted in Ireland in the 1980sHow Joanne used humour to get through tough timesHer journey recovering from an eating disorderHer career shift from publicist to an international comedianSearching for love on dating appsWhy her therapist actually ghosted herMy conversation with Joanne reminded me the story we're born into isn't the one we're meant to stay in and that embracing your true voice can change everything.Joanne McNally is Great Company. You can listen to the Jo Brand episode HEREIf you enjoyed the show, you can also follow us: Instagram- @greatcompanypodcastTikTok - @greatcompanypodcast And if you've got thoughts, questions and comments, you can email us at: greatcompany@jampotproductions.co.uk THE CREDITS Exec Producer: Jemima Rathbone Producer: Helen BurkeAssistant Producer: Issy Weeks-HankinsVideo: Jake Ji & Riley KirbySocial Media: Laura Coughlan Great Company is an original podcast from JamPot Hosted on Acast. Defining Success As An Amputee What is success? Can any one person define success for the world? Of course not! As an amputee we need to remember that. Success id what you make of your life and where you'll find contentment and happiness behind what you do and accomplish. For some of us it's walking for the first time without assistance. For others it's wearing their prosthesis all day long. And yet for others, it's getting back to work, or the gym. Facing fears has become our new norm. I remember, when I first got my leg, that every time I went walking inside or outside of my house I had fear well up inside of me and I had to battle it so it didn't paralyze me and leave me stuck, immobile. It takes time. It takes courage, but remember your journey is yours. I know people see amputees walking around in the world like it's a piece of cake but the reality is we all start over and learn to walk again. Some people charge forward determined to walk again while others are fearful and apprehensive to don their new leg and trust it. It takes time. It takes practice. This was my very first test socket, using parallel bars for support, and yes, I was scared! So what's the difference on those who walk and those who struggle? First is mindset, the voice inside your head that is stubborn and tells you, "Yes, you can!" That's a great voice to have, a positive one. Listen to that voice. Second, those who find success not only have that positive mindset they also set goals with timelines/deadlines. They are determined to accomplish, despite fears (and yes, we have fears when trying new things, failing, picking ourselves up and trying again-that's how we learn and improve). Third, they don't compare themselves to others. They find joy in their own accomplishments as they improve each day, whatever their goals may be. What you CAN do are endless possibilities. Like the caterpillar, you need time to become that butterfly. You can do whatever you put your mind too. However, make sure you are realistic with your goals and timelines. After amputation you may feel stuck or defeated because you had no idea how long healing would take, or how a socket would feel on your own flesh, or even how heavy it would be to manipulate because you got weak while you waited to heal. Just because you were an amazing walker with 2 legs doesn't mean post amputation is going to be like riding a bike (by the way, post amputation biking riding is also a new challenge, like everything else). You must relearn how to walk because it IS different than before. Cut yourself some slack. Understand that fears are common and the only way to your goal will be through some of those fears. But I can promise you, facing fears to reach your goals, no matter how big or small they are, will be one of the most rewarding things you'll feel. Just don't give up. Dig deep and know you are capable. You may be needing to take baby steps to push through, but take them. You will fail and you will fall, but that is how you learn. Pick yourself back up and go at it again, and again, and again. Hiking is my favorite activity but is exhausting. The terrain is uncertain but I worked hard to be able to get to this point. Let's do this! Change your mindset to positive mode! Decide what you most want to achieve. WRITE IT DOWN! Set that goal and a plan on how to achieve it. If you want to wear your leg all day but aren't wearing it at all now then start by saying: Day 1 I will wear it 2 hours around the house (use assistive devices if you are concerned) but wear it! Sit in it, stand in it, mosey around your house with it on. Day 2 wear it for more time, don't take it off, even if you only wear it 10 minutes longer than yesterday you still improved! Continue on that path. Always adding more time, staying in it longer and walking where you are safe.
