This week we go full mule deer nerd mode on the Rokcast. We brought together a room full of big buck hunters with Travis Hobbs, Corey Dixon, Braxton Hamilton, and Robby Denning to talk buck age versus score based on the deer they've had aged. These aren't guesses. Not “he looked mature on the hoof” conversations.  Everyone lab-aged their deer and the guys dive into that data from over 70 bucks, including 15 that grossed 200 inches or better. What we found might surprise you. Most of the biggest deer weren't ancient. They were five- and six-year-old bucks. Some giants were only three. And some grandpa bucks at seven- and eight-years-old barely cracked the 160s. We dive into what tooth aging has taught us about judging bucks on the hoof, the myth of regression, how hard winters really affect antler growth, and why security matters more than limited tags. Sub-gauge shotguns offer a slightly different experience when duck hunting than a 10 or 12 gauge can and it's hard to explain until you just go out and try it. Joey and Cal have been trying different things all year and we've been shooting 20's for some time. This year we tried out a Weatherby Orion 28 SxS and a .410 and absolutely loved using these guns. So much happening in the sports world and much of it directly involves Minnesota sports teams. We start with the bidding line for Giannis and the wolves appeared very interested in being at the front of that pack. We talk about how insane the trades are in the NBA involving draft picks and more which aligns with how ridiculous the trade offer would have to be for Giannis. Is it worth what teams would have to give up? Then, the past few weeks have been fairly interesting for lots of NFL teams as the fallout of this past season has to be answered for by front office and coaching staff members. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was not exempt from this and this past week he lost his job because Sam Darnold took the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. We discuss if this was the right move and what the Vikings, as well as other teams, have to do next to put themselves in a good position for next year. Well the debate heard round the waterfowl community has made its way to us. For the last couple of months you've probably seen all of the discussions, debates, and outright fighting regarding flooded corn and whether or not this practice should be allowed to continue. While purposefully flooding corn is not a common practice, it is in some parts of the country and there are strong opinions in the south regarding it. Joey and Cal give their thoughts about the debate and look at multiple different avenues when it comes to the lack of mallards in the south. We're not saying we're right or that we know everything and you may have a different opinion one way or the other. The important thing we keep in mind is the need for dialogue in all of these issues and being able to see it from all angles. Today we have a special interview for you guys. We were able to sit down with 82 year old Claude Strother of Gastonburg, Alabama for an in depth discussion on his life & turkey hunting. At the time we recorded this interview Mr. Claude was battling cancer, and unfortunatley he passed away just a few weeks before the release of this episode. What a turn of events for Sam Darnold. Scott's advice directly helped Jacob and Andrew tag their last two bucks, including Jacob's biggest Alabama buck to date! We start by going over how Jacob found the spot he hunted and tagged his big buck on a new-to-him piece of public land in Alabama.
