On this episode of The Wisconsin Sportsman, Pierce sits down with Wisconsin BHA Chapter Chair, Alec Bekkers, to talk all things public lands and public land policy! By now, I'm sure you've seen countless posts highlighting the importance of stopping the sale of public lands, and for good reason. But some of you might still be asking, "why?" Alec is here to answer that question and dives into the importance of holding on to our public lands to be used or leased for generations to come, which will in turn generate revenue for the government for years to come unlike a one time sale that only brings in payment once. The guys dive into how nuanced the issue of public lands is, and why talking about the multiple uses of public land are incredibly important for various groups. After that, the guys touch on some spring hearing questions, the use of cell cams to check traps, and upcoming events to be on the lookout for! On today's episode of the Rokcast, Robby hosts Don Whittaker, Ungulate Coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Don is on the forefront of redesigning Oregon's Wildlife Management Units to align with the latest research on Oregon mule deer herds. These new "herd units" will replace the former unit boundaries and allow Oregon's wildlife professionals to better manage mule deer. This is cutting-edge wildlife managament that other western states are likely to adopt as we learn more about mule deer and how they utilize a wide range of habitats across North America. A few of the talking points Don & Robby cover: Why is the change necessary? New naming system Larger hunt areas Fewer total hunts Tag adjustments Landowner preference tags Preference points Proposed hunts and tag numbers will be available online in July 2025 What about whitetails and elk—are there hunt areas changing? What about management objectives? MOs for population and buck:doe ratios were restructured to align with herd range Learn more on Oregon mule deer at Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife here https://myodfw.com/articles/eastern-oregon-deer-hunts Rokcast is powered by onX Hunt. Today's bonus episode is from the Hunt West Podcast by Jaden Bales Jaden and Robby dive into old school deer hunting tactics that too many hunters might not think about. The West is primed for a big growth in mule deer populations, though mature buck numbers in a lot of places are pretty low right now - let alone big special ones. On the back of this, hunters will need to think outside of the box to find bucks in places other hunters are not able to find them. How does someone do that? Topics discussed: Adapting to Changing Hunter Habits Big Bucks in Easy to Glass Places vs. Thick Country. Are deer drives something guys should consider for big bucks? How to practice when long shots aren't your game plan. Tracking: How's a guy do it? How's a guy get good at it? and more on old school deer hunting tactics. Over the last four years, Brandon has built an incredibly repeatable system for killing mature bucks on high-pressure land — and he shares it all in this detail-packed conversation. Brandon breaks down how a Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement from his job at Toyota transformed the way he hunts. He shares how asking “why” has helped him pattern bucks, refine his trail camera strategies, and create a career-hunting balance that gives him a major edge. We also dig into: How Brandon uses trail camera data patterns, not guesses, to pick kill dates Why every buck he's killed on public was already on camera How “asking why until there's no more why” leads to better results in the woods His go-to terrain features — and the exact setup that keeps producing big bucks The power of annual patterns and how he uses a simple calendar to predict buck movement The importance of finding big tracks, not just rubs and scrapes Why terrain funnels produce more consistent daylight buck activity than sign Mentorship lessons from his old-school, big buck–killing father Whether you're still figuring out public land or looking to take your hunting to the next level, Brandon's story offers a real-world blueprint for doing more with less — and finding repeatable success in pressured places. In this episode in my series of Tales of Accidental Bird Dogs, I chat with Vanessa Carmean about the unexpected journey that started with her first German Shorthaired Pointer, Camo. After years with Labradors and a family health scare, Vanessa and her husband chose a pointing breed—though she had no idea what she was getting into. What began as a plan to do a little dove hunting turned into something much bigger. Vanessa shares how Camo's first Junior Hunter test revealed his natural talent, sparking her curiosity and passion for pointing dog training. Armed with YouTube and determination, she began training for Senior Hunter. There were lots of ups and downs along the way, and she eventually added more GSPs to the mix and became a breeder, hunt test judge, and field trial judge. We talk about her learning curve, her love for the sport, and the value of mentorship. Vanessa's story is a great reminder that kind words and encouragement can truly shape someone's path in the bird dog world. The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by OnX Hunt and Elevate Pet Provisions. We are part of the HerUpland Podcast Network.

Robby hosts this multi-topic episode. Front and center is his review on the 2013 book: "Blood in the Tracks: A Mule Deer Manifesto" by Jim Collyer. Robby shares some of the highlights of this great mule deer book on today's episodes. Jim Collyer spent 40 years hunting mule deer before he penned this book, and it shows. Jim has a deep experience hunting mule deer and this book can help anyone in their pursuit. Most mule deer books focus on high country/spot & stalk, but Jim writes about hunting in the timber and some of the old school tactics, like tracking--tactics that are more conducive to pursuing big mule deer living in the thicker country. Jim also dives into the proper mindset a successful mule deer hunter must adapt. Robby also shares some good news on the mule deer front: Idaho bringing back some opportunity previously lost to the hard winters of late. He wraps up the episode with a story about the first buck he ever killed after finding him in the preseason, nearly 60 days earlier. While that was over 30 years ago, the lessons learned still hold true. About 7pm last night they removed the Public Land sale from the reconsiliation bill! This is a big win for those of us that enjoy hunting on this land. A HUGE thanks goes out to everyone that did their part in this fight. OnX Hunt deserves a huge thanks for putting their post out yesterday where they discovered it wasnt 500,000 acres set to be sold, but 1.5 million acres.
Our friend Sam Cederberg is an avid waterfowl hunter and doesn't have any ties to the outdoor industry. He joins the podcast to give us an honest take on a hunter's view of industry insiders and influencers and what they really represent for hunters around the country. We talk about what the big picture goal really should be and that's carrying on the traditions that have been passed down. Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review! On this episode of The Wisconsin Sportsman, Pierce sits down with Drew Schleim, host of The Predator Podcast, to recap a rollercoaster of a turkey season, and share some of the lessons learned from the past few weeks! The guys start their conversation at the start of Wisconsin's 4th turkey period, where Drew helped a hunter tag her first Wisconsin longbeard in over a decade, and managed to double up with a buddy to kick off the week. Meanwhile, Pierce was struggling after missing a layup shot on a bird, having a freaky mishap with the .410, and bumping birds all over the county before spreading his bad luck to Drew and his buddies, and eventually sealing the deal back at the home farm right at fly down. They discuss how their tactics changed throughout the season, lessons learned from this year, and what you folks should be doing to punch that late season turkey tag in these final days of the season. All that and more in this week's episode!
