I interviewed Adrienne Barber in our latest installment of the Tales of Accidental Bird Dog series. Adrienne got a Spinone, Fig, as an active running and adventure companion in 2016. After a while, she noticed that Fig wouldn't stop pointing tweety birds while she was walking her in the city, so she decided to look into hunting. She got involved in NAVHDA and eventually ran Fig in the Natural Ability test for evaluation only as she was a little past the age cut-off. Since then, Adrienne started hunting and recently got another bird dog, a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, named Frankie. We talk about her journey into the bird dog world, how life circumstances slowed down Fig's development a bit, and what she's done differently with Frankie. Adrienne's story is very relatable and I think you will enjoy it! You can find Adrienne on Instagram at @mostlyfigandfran. -- The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by onX Hunt and Elevate Pet Provisions. We are part of the HerUpland Podcast Network.

Three Key Takeaways Mastering Elk Tracking Requires Patience and Observation: Todd's methodical approach to tracking elk in late-season snow highlights the importance of reading subtle signs, such as track size, dew claw impressions, and weaving patterns, to identify mature bulls and predict their behavior. Preparation is Critical in Bear Country: Todd's survival of a double grizzly attack underscores the necessity of carrying and practicing with bear spray, maintaining situational awareness, and being mentally prepared for unexpected wildlife encounters. Pistol Hunting Adds Unique Challenges and Rewards: Hunting elk with a pistol, as Todd does, combines the precision of rifle hunting with the close-range intensity of bow hunting, requiring hunters to get within 100-200 yards and master their weapon for ethical shots.
In this part 2 episode with Alan Altizer, we go deep on the difference in hunting any buck vs. focusing on one buck. We also have an extremley in depth conversation on wind, thermals and how mature bucks use them in ways other deer do not. Other subjects: The difference in mindset between hunting any buck versus targeting one specific mature buck. How tactics shift depending on whether you're hunting for opportunity or for a particular deer. The role of trail cameras — when they help, when they mislead, and why woodsmanship still matters more. Instinct and experience as defining qualities of great hunters. How patience, diligence, and time in the woods separate consistently successful hunters from others. Why repetition (getting reps) killing deer with a bow builds confidence and sharpens execution. The importance of woodsmanship skills (judging distance, reading sign, moving quietly, handling wind and thermals). The difference between being able to kill deer in general vs. consistently killing mature bucks. The value of learning from mistakes and adapting strategies instead of repeating failures. The idea that success in hunting mirrors success in life — dedication, persistence, and growth. Got a question for the show? Mastering woodsmanship—reading tracks, rubs, and micro benches—lets you zero in on elk where others give up, turning tough units into opportunities. Adapt to Pressure with Micro Pockets: With better hunters and tools like OnX, success comes from finding overlooked pockets just beyond the crowd. Trent's cat road shuffle and willingness to drive hours to new spots show how mobility and persistence beat pressure. Slow Down for Kids, Speed Up for Elk: Taking kids hunting requires patience and relearning basics, but it reignites your own passion. Meanwhile, covering ground fast to find elk, then slowing for the kill, is key—especially when balancing family and hunting.

In this episode of The Southern Outdoorsmen Podcast, we sit down with legendary hunter Alan Altizer to talk about one of the most powerful deer hunting concepts you'll ever hear: how a buck's greatest strength can also be his biggest weakness.Alan shares decades of hard-earned woodsmanship — from reading washed-out tracks and understanding how deer use their senses, to why trail cameras can actually work against you. He explains how mature bucks rely on their strongest traits for survival, and how hunters can use those very strengths to finally outsmart them. • How to read tracks to understand a buck's behavior • Why some bucks rely more on sight, smell, or sound — and how that changes their bedding • The concept of “kamikaze setups” and making a buck feel safe before moving in • Why trail cameras may give you more problems than solutions • How to exploit a buck's strengths and turn them into weaknessesGot a question for the show? Mike Drury was originally on the show roughly 18 months ago, shortly after he founded Alpine Riflecraft and began building the kind of rifles he wanted to take into the mountains but couldn't find in any of the production models currently available. Starting at just 4.5 pounds, these rifles are truly a mountain hunter's dream. They combine excellent balance and ergonomics in a package that seamlessly blends both modern and traditional features. If Jack O'Connor were to take a rifle into the mountains in 2025, he'd probably be carrying a Zenith. Since his original appearance on BTK, he's expanded the available calibers, navigated cross border sales and shipping, and has numerous field reports from successful customers. There is no question that if you're a serious mountain hunter, these rifles should be on your radar.
