In the first half, therapist and former drummer of the band Maroon 5, Ryan Dusick, joined guest host Lisa Garr (email) to share his tumultuous journey through music, mental health struggles, and eventual recovery. Reflecting on his early identity, he noted, "I was a high-achieving kid... it became an expectation that I had of myself." He described how this pressure manifested into anxiety in adulthood. Despite a promising start in the music industry, Dusick revealed the harsh realities of the business, recounting how Maroon 5 faced setbacks after their first album. He also discussed his substance abuse at that time, explaining how he was originally "straight edge in the 90s," but later turned to alcohol as a means to cope with the pressures of touring.Dusick went on to describe his struggles with imposter syndrome, which led to obsessive behaviors and a disconnect from the joy of performing. The intense pressure of fame and relentless touring exacerbated his mental health issues, culminating in a condition known as focal dystonia, likened to "the Yips" in sports, where his body began to reject playing the drums. Dusick's eventual breakdown led him to leave the band he had built his identity around, which he described as "devastating."After struggling with depression and substance abuse for nearly a decade, Dusick found purpose in helping others during his own recovery journey. Now a therapist and advocate for mental health, he has embraced a new path. "Service became advocacy... it feels good to feel like I have something to share," he said.According to Dusick, "The biggest indicator of whether or not people are happy is that they feel a sense of connection and purpose." He advocated for proactive mental health strategies, emphasizing mindfulness as a tool to manage anxiety: "Mindfulness is about getting out of your own way and living in acceptance of the present moment." He encouraged those struggling with anxiety to practice grounding techniques and to remember that "thoughts are not actually happening; they are just things we're imposing on the present moment."-------------------In the second half, healer Ofer Niv shared his profound journey from a corporate career to embracing shamanism after facing serious health challenges. Niv, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis after previously battling thyroid cancer, said his dire condition prompted him to explore alternative healing practices. "I just couldn't enjoy life," he confessed. This experience led him to a year-long program focused on energy and self-discovery, culminating in a transformative session with a shamanic healer. "I felt fevers go up and down my spine… something shifted so big that I said I needed to know more of this," he recalled, marking the beginning of his healing journey. Remarkably, after embracing shamanism, he reported being symptom-free for the last eight to nine years and has not needed medication since 2020.Niv delved into the concept of "dark forces" that can affect individuals, explaining that many people unknowingly harbor "things that are not you" within their energy fields. He described these as "soul fragments" or even entities—spirits that may be drawn to individuals due to shared emotions. "Most of the time, it's coming from other people that wish something on them," he noted. When expanding on such influences, Niv explained that individuals often are under some form of curse or negative energy. "If you suspect that you are more unlucky than usual… maybe there is something that is energetically blocking you," he advised. He also emphasized the power of light and divine energy in healing, stating, "Light is always the answer to dark, and love is the answer to fear."

If you're interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on the course and in your business, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.  Key Points: Simplifying the short game involves managing expectations and focusing on technique. Many golfers have unrealistic expectations based on professional highlights. The yips can stem from both physical flaws and mental fears. Proper grip and setup are crucial for successful putting. Club-focused instruction aligns with how the brain learns motor skills. Slow motion practice can help identify and correct swing issues. Strategic pauses in the swing can prevent manipulation of the club. Becoming a scratch golfer requires significant time and dedication. Coaching should prioritize understanding the person behind the golfer. Key Quotes: “I believe that the improvement you make and the goals you achieve in golf will reflect the time and effort you commit to the game.” “Focus on what you want to do as opposed to what you fear might happen.” “The difference between a scratch golfer and others is the amount of time they spend playing and practicing the game.” “Most players have too high of expectations, thinking they should make all their putts within 10 feet or hit it close with a wedge every time. Tempering expectations reduces stress and allows you to play more freely.” “Slow-motion swings can help you identify whether you're executing correctly. In golf, where precision matters, slowing down can make all the difference in building a repeatable and effective swing.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Meet Jim Waldron, a nationally acclaimed golf teaching professional, mental game coach, author, and lecturer best known for his pioneering research on the mind/body connection approach to learning and teaching golf.  In my own words, I'd describe him as equal parts Buddhist Monk, Golf Nerd, Zen Master, Yogi, Cool Dude. And it's this demeanor and zen that he's been bringing to the course for more than 35 years to help his students play better golf - and to do so fast using a variety of models of teaching and coaching not commonly found on the course.  In today's episode, you'll learn: How to eliminate “swing thoughts” that contaminate your body's natural movement, and learn Jim's antidote for a pure, thought-free swing. How to between the objective physical world and your private mental world impacts focus, performance, and emotional resilience on the course. Why practicing in slow motion without a ball is essential to cementing new movement patterns in your unconscious mind, making your swing more consistent. Jim's step-by-step method to overcome the yips by tackling the root cause - your emotional triggers and attention control. Explore the transformative power of focused attention on your golf game, and why staying in the external world boosts performance and confidence. How detaching from your emotions and thoughts can reduce frustration, anger, and mental fatigue during a round, keeping you present and composed. Get your pencils ready and start listening.  More About Jim Jim Waldron is a nationally acclaimed golf teaching professional, mental game coach, author, and lecturer best known for his pioneering research on the mind/body connection approach to learning and teaching golf. His holistic approach to golf improvement blends swing and short game mechanics, mental focus skills, physical fitness and emotional state control into a revolutionary golf instruction paradigm. He is recognized as one of the game's best golf swing instructors and swing theorists. This unification of Western scientific principles with Eastern psychological insights is the result of his lifelong interest in and passion for a deeper understanding of human potential - both physical and mental - and especially about how that understanding can lead to peak performance breakthroughs in the game of golf. He began playing golf in 1960 and has been a serious student of the game ever since. Work with Jim. Key Takeaways: Slow-motion training is crucial for developing proper swing mechanics. Swing thoughts can be toxic and disrupt performance. The yips are a psychosomatic disorder linked to negative emotions. Understanding the difference between correct and incorrect movements is key. Emotional resiliency is essential for consistent performance on the course. Practicing in slow motion allows for better muscle memory and awareness. The two worlds theory separates objective reality from subjective psychological experiences. Negative emotions can be confronted without identifying with them. Staying external during play can prevent self-sabotage. Acceptance of discomfort is part of the growth process. Engaging with the physical world can enhance mental clarity. Key Quotes: "Swing thoughts are toxic." “The reason why you don't want to use a ball, obviously, slow motion and ball are incompatible on the face of it. But even at full speed, eventually you're going to go to the range, you're going to work on what I call dynamics, which is a different part of the brain. Learning mechanics should only be done, also called movement pattern training, is only done away from a ball in slow motion.” "The Yips is a serious psychosomatic disorder." “And in philosophy, that fallacy is called mind-body dualism. Now we know from today, from modern neuroscience, although the ancient Buddhist tradition, which is also 2,500 years old, agrees with modern neuroscience that mind and body are two sides of the same coin.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Imagine yourself standing over the 18th hole, preparing to step up and sink a four-foot putt you've made dozens of times… As you begin to sink into your alignment and posture, you begin thinking about missing the putt, how far back to go on your backswing, and how much strength to put behind the ball.  You also allow yourself to begin seeing and feeling what it will be like if you miss the putt. Your hands become tense, and your grip tightens, which leads to you taking a jab at the ball and missing the putt. This miss strengthens your anxiety around short putts, making the next one feel even more challenging.  You know how to hit a putt. If you don't, there's no shortage of videos online or coaches nearby who can help you. Your yip problem isn't a lack of knowledge problem. The yips is a mindset problem.  The yips come from fear, mental overthinking, loss of trust in your abilities, and perfectionism.  The pressure to perform and the fear of embarrassment amplify the issue, leading to emotional distress and physical tension.  These factors create a cycle that is hard to break, where each mistake reinforces anxiety and self-doubt, making it increasingly difficult to play confidently and naturally. The result: the game of golf yips your heart repeatedly. In today's episode, you'll learn the underlying reason for a case of the yips, why self-diagnosing yourself as a golfer with the yips is so detrimental, and tactical steps you can take today to get out of your own way and play to your potential. Start listening. Also, here's a heads-up: I updated my Instagram tag to @thegolfhypnotherapist.  P.S. If you're interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on the course and in your business, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.  P.P.S. Here's the article I references detailing more about how to overcome the problem-who-must-not-be-named. Key Points: The act of labeling oneself as having the Yips can be counterproductive. Fear is a significant underlying factor in the Yips. Self-diagnosis can lead to a negative identity and performance spiral. Focusing on process rather than results can alleviate anxiety. Mindfulness and deep breathing are essential for managing tension. Simplifying techniques can help reduce overthinking and improve performance. Visualization and mental imagery can enhance confidence and execution. Asking for help can lead to faster improvement and resolution of issues. Practicing specific skills can desensitize fear and build confidence. Emotional resilience is crucial for overcoming performance anxiety. Key Quotes: “The yips are caused by a combination of mental overthinking, fear, and emotional distress, which promote anxiety and tension, the two enemies of a fluid, consistent swing.” “The most detrimental mistake you can make when attempting to overcome your yip problem is labeling a recent mistake or period of poor performance as a case of the yips.” “Since the yips are often rooted in fear, anxiety, overthinking, and physical tension, the goal is to address both the mental and physical aspects of the problem.” “The yips is a mindset problem.” “The yips come from fear, mental overthinking, loss of trust in your abilities, and perfectionism. The pressure to perform and the fear of embarrassment amplify the issue, leading to emotional distress and physical tension.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. A big episode of Talk Birdie To Me this week with the team in 3 different timezones. Nick is in South Australia working hard drinking wine, Mark is in Melbourne, and Third Man Dan is in Mackay in North Queensland.Nick is in SA doing some hosting at the BMW National Final and explains what he is doing, some of the golf he has been playing, and who with. He played The Grange courtesy of their pro Gary Simpson, Mark tells a great story about Gary.Last week Mark was very excited about his impending trip to play Tara Iti in the 'Lamington Jam', and we want to hear all about it. Did Tara Iti live up to his (high) expectations? Did he play well? Would he go back? How does he rate Tara Iti on a world scale? Mark talks us through his takeaways from the trip.We then talk about what Mark describes as 'the best short par 4 in the world', does Nick agree?Nick saw none of the Black Desert Championship in Utah at the weekend, as he was working, Mark saw a bit - and loved it. We discuss desert golf and how spectacular it is. Kalgoorlie hosting the WA PGA Championship at the weekend is another great example, Mark describes the decision to host the WA PGA in Kalgoorlie for the past decade or so as a 'genius' move by WA, in taking it to spectacular regional courses, much like what NSW is doing this year at Murray Downs. We discuss innovation in golf commentary and Mark explains what he saw the commentators in Utah doing when they analysed Harris English's swing. He'd love to see that kind of analysis on the Australasian PGA tour. This gives Nick an idea - he is playing with Elvis Smylie in Adelaide tomorrow, so he'll try to set something up. Watch this space. Then we talk real estate. For a lazy $10 million we can purchase and build a home on Te Arai golf course in New Zealand overlooking the 4th hole. We'll pass a hat around, perhaps the Talk Birdie Wolfpack can collectively buy in. Back to Tara Iti, Mark's Top 5 is his favourite 5 things about Tara Iti...ironically the course itself is not one of them! He explains.Nick is pumped in the PING global results as PING players, as usual, have been killing it. And we check feedback, which includes solutions for the Yips, more RakePod comments, and a whack for Mark which Nick says is overdue. Great masterclass from Nick, in two parts, both to do with Elvis Smylie. Part 1 on his swing, and Part 2 on his putting. Thanks to our great Talk Birdie partners:PING will help you play your best, like they have for Nick O'Hern. Asif goes first by discussing his disappointment with season 3 of ‘The Bear', and similarities to ‘House of the Dragon', ‘The Boys' and ‘Ted Lasso' Season 3. He then discusses ‘Time Bandits', ‘Deadpool and Wolverine' and ‘Love Lies Bleeding'. Asif concludes by discussing a news article about a recent apology from MMA star Ronda Roussey. Ali talks about what he watched when recovering from hernia surgery including ‘Chef', ‘Hacks' and the somewhat controversial 1994 movie ‘Leon The Professional'. He then talks about his hate for the series ‘Love', Sebastian Maniscalco's ‘Bookie' and re-watching stand up specials.    Then Ali asks Asif about ‘The Yips' aka task specific dystonia (32:59). Asif talks about the history of the disease in golf as well as other sports and music. He discusses how common it is and the theory of why it develops in certain people. Asif describes how some affected people can overcome the dystonia using sensory tricks (“geste antagoniste”). He then talks about the treatment and how botulinum toxin is often used.    The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. The “yips” is a word that strikes fear into many golfers, cricketers, darts players and many other performers.   With the yips, comes huge emotional and physiological responses.  Lack of enjoyment, and often thoughts about and decisions to quit your chosen sport or pastime.  It doesn't have to be that way however as Trevor Jones a PGA Professional Golf Coach and Mental Performance Coach and I discuss in this episode.  We go on to talk about leaning into your fears, embracing discomfort,  Acceptance Commitment Therapy or Training (ACT) and mindfulness to help golfers and performers.    Key Learning Points: The yips is a significant problem which can escape into other areas of your sport and life. The practice of "dropping anchor" remaining still for extended periods can help you remain present. Consider what values would make enduring discomfort worthwhile as motivation to regularly practice exercises of this type. Explore ways of incorporating mindfulness techniques into other areas of your life to build mental flexibility. The still lake exercise is a helpful technique to find flow.
