071521 404 A prosecutor today has rejected claims that the killing of a University of Iowa student could be connected to sex trafficking and other abductions. Mollie Tibbetts disappeared and was found murdered in rural eastern Iowa in 2018. Cristhian Bahena Rivera was convicted for the murder earlier this year. The 27-year-old dairy farm worker testified that two masked men killed Tibbetts but forced him to dispose of her body. Assistant attorney general Scott Brown says a man's alleged confession that he helped kill Tibbetts after she was kidnapped and held at a house used for sex trafficking isn't credible, and there is no evidence to support the confession. This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. A strong economy starts with an educated workforce—the foundation of which begins before a child even enters kindergarten. Andy Myers, CEO of Waterford.org, is here to discuss how the early education nonprofit works to ensure all children see success from the start. ANDY MYERS Literacy is the cornerstone of learning. A child who can read is a child who can learn. A child who loves learning is unstoppable. Our mission at Waterford.org is to achieve universal literacy for children through equity, access, and family empowerment. As an early education nonprofit, we have been helping children learn the fundamentals of literacy for more than 40 years. Waterford.org is headquartered in Utah, and in 2009, we partnered with the State Legislature to create Waterford Upstart—an at-home early education program designed to get our youngest learners ready for kindergarten. Utah State Office of Education evaluations show children who participated in Waterford Upstart saw immediate positive gains and were still outperforming state averages on standardized tests through the third grade. Online preschool options are growing in popularity. Just this past spring, Ted Talk organizers created a bit of a stir in the early childhood community when they awarded a portion of their Audacious Project funding to an online preschool company, Waterford UPSTART. While proponents suggest this is an affordable and accessible option for families that may not otherwise have preschool options, detractors say the most valuable parts of preschool could never be packaged into a virtual program. Even before this brouhaha boiled over, Amy Webb was writing about the misconceptions surrounding online preschool on her site, The Thoughtful Parent. I’m so excited to have her join me on today’s episode to break this topic down. Is online preschool the panacea for early education inequality, or just a placebo we invest in to make ourselves feel better?
