The Utah Inland Port Authority is helping coordinate those connections across the state. Executive Director Ben Hart joins us to share how this work is supporting long-term economic growth. Through shelter, housing, case management and support services, they are helping neighbors rebuild their lives. CEO Carol Hollowell, joins us with more. Carol Hollowell: Eleven years ago, we met a man on the street who simply needed a photo ID. That single encounter sparked what is now Utah's largest statewide provider of homeless and poverty services. At Switchpoint, we believe only one thing truly solves homelessness: a home. But a home without support services doesn't stick. So we wrap housing with everything people need, emergency shelter, food pantries, case management, programs for teens and youth and six social enterprises that fund our mission while training our clients. Today, we operate more than 13 sites with nearly 400 employees across Utah. Right now, our most urgent focus is a crisis hiding in plain sight: senior homelessness, which has increased by 42 percent, with veteran homelessness up 36 percent. That's a double-digit rise among the very people who helped build this community. It takes all of us, and we're grateful to stand together in addressing it. Derek Miller: By empowering those in need, addressing the root causes of poverty and providing critical homeless services, Switchpoint is creating meaningful change here in Utah. Through styling sessions and community events, they help women feel confident and empowered in everyday life. Fashion Stylist and Image Consultant, Pualei Lynn, joins us with more. Pualei Lynn: Self-Image is the foundation of who we believe we are, what we deserve and is the place from where we create. It shapes everything else in our lives. Two people with identical skills can perform very differently based purely on how they see themselves. After launching my image consulting and styling services in 2021, I discovered that even high-achieving women can struggle with low self-image, often tying their worth to performing, over-functioning and external success. Through my unique framework of coaching and styling, I guide women to build a powerful, loving self-image rooted in internal, self-validation rather than outside approval. This shift – from seeking validation to embodying it – has been transformative for my clients, empowering them to show up more confidently and contribute to the world in even bigger ways. Llama Butterfly, founded in 2022, is a boutique that brings Peruvian craftsmanship to life, offering handmade alpaca clothing, accessories, and home goods that combine comfort, quality, and cultural artistry. Owner, Patricia Smith, joins us with more. Patricia Smith: If you've never felt alpaca, imagine a fiber that's lighter than you expect, warmer than it looks and incredibly soft — and stays beautiful over time. Llama Butterfly began as a nonprofit dream to support children in Peru, and over time has since grown into a business where craftsmanship and community meet. Rooted in a spirit of “hope and forever,” the brand first took shape through watercolor florals and butterflies — symbols of beauty and transformation. Today, I work directly with artisan partners in Peru, home to about 80 percent of the world's alpacas. Alpaca is a sustainable natural fiber that's warm, breathable and long-lasting. The name itself came from my three-year-old, who kept singing, “I'm a butterfly, I'm a butterfly.” Llama honors my Peruvian roots and butterfly represents growth and change. After four years of markets, people kept asking, “Where is your store?” Now, we're proud that the answer is City Creek Center, East Block, Level 2. As the fundraising arm for Huntsman Mental Health Institute, it expands research, care and services to those who need them. President, Miranda Barnard, joins us with more. Every leader and team member of every company in our state will have employees, customers, neighbors, family and friends who will struggle with mental health. For the past eight years, Wasatch Security Awareness has partnered with organizations across the Wasatch Front, helping them better understand cybersecurity risks and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. Owner, Matt Groves, joins us with more. Matt Groves: Most business risk today has very little to do with technology, and everything to do with people. At Wasatch Security Awareness, that's exactly where we focus — because most problems don't start with broken systems, they start with the everyday choices people make at work. That's why we provide customized cybersecurity testing and live training. Real conversations with real people, not just another video everyone clicks through. When people can ask questions and see how threats show up in their day-to-day work, the lessons stick and behavior starts to change. We also help organizations make sense of artificial intelligence. Our AI literacy training helps teams safely implement AI into the workflows they already use — saving time, improving efficiency and supporting better decisions. The League believes that government works best when it is closest to the people. We advocate at the Capitol based on three principles: respect, collaboration and outcomes. The League works on issues such as land use planning, transportation, infrastructure, taxes, housing, public safety, water, parks and recreation and effective governance. Our members share their real-world experiences, push back on one-size-misfits-all approaches and champion partnership over preemption. The League also provides professional development opportunities for city leaders in public policy, legal compliance and best practices. We ensure that mayors and council members have the tools, legal authority and community confidence to ensure the quality of life of today's and tomorrow's residents. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Based in Salt Lake City, RSG Performance helps leaders and teams excel under pressure. Using behavioral science, mindfulness and performance strategies, they improve decision making, collaboration and overall effectiveness guiding organizations to thrive. Here to share insights is Co-founder Brad Manuel. Brad Manuel: Most of us assume leadership is about having all the answers. But lately, we've been noticing something different. The leaders who are truly effective aren't rushing to fix everything — they're slowing down and paying attention to what's actually happening first. Noticing when a team feels tense instead of engaged. Noticing when reactions come from habit rather than intention. Noticing when “busy” quietly replaces “effective.” Here's a simple experiment for anyone listening today: before your next meeting, pause for ten seconds and ask yourself one question — what's the temperature in the room right now? Not the agenda. Not the outcome. The human temperature. Because awareness changes behavior faster than motivation ever will. The best leaders don't always have to move first. Sometimes, the most powerful move is simply to slow down, pay attention, and see clearly. That moment of clarity can transform how the team thinks, feels, and performs. Derek Miller: To learn more about approaches like these and how they can transform your team, visit RSGPerformance.com. Their tools and insights help leaders slow down, see clearly, and create engaging environments. I'm Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: 3/12/26

Executive Director Derek Monson, joins us with more. Derek Monson: America's approaching 250th anniversary is both a celebration and a reminder that “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” Sutherland Institute has worked for 30 years to keep Utah a place where the foundations of freedom remain broadly popular, where Utah's model of strong families, vibrant faith communities, free enterprise and a deep respect for constitutional government can be an example to the nation. As one of Utah's oldest cultural institutions, the Salt Lake City Public Library is essential to a vibrant, thriving Salt Lake. City Library CEO Noah Baskett, joins us with more. Noah Baskett: Salt Lake City loves its public libraries. Nearly three-quarters of residents are cardholders — which is a remarkable sign of trust and civic pride. At our core, we are about books and literacy: connecting people to stories, ideas and information through books, movies, music, graphic novels, magazines and free digital eBooks and audiobooks — all fine-free for every single Salt Laker. But today, the Library is more than a place to borrow things. We are a connector across our city. We connect people to resources, to opportunities and to one another — whether through a résumé workshop, a small business class, homework help after school or simply a welcoming space to gather and belong. And at a time when fewer than half of Utah's young readers are reading at grade level, our work to build literacy for all ages — especially in our most vulnerable communities — is more urgent and more essential than ever. Co-Founder and CEO Rena Vanzo, joins us with more. Rena Vanzo: One in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Think about that! Founded in 1945, the Utah Foundation is a nonprofit research organization that provides clear, nonpartisan analysis and publishes yearly reports to help Utahns and policymakers better understand the issues shaping our state's future. President Shawn Teigen, joins us with more. Shawn Teigen: The Utah Foundation's 2025 signature project was the Social Capital Index. That project culminated in finding that Utah has very high social capital. But what is social capital? It refers to the ways people use networks and social connections to benefit both themselves and their communities. For example, maintaining relationships with coworkers as they move into new positions can keep you up-to-date in the industry, maybe place your child in an internship or even give you a leg up in finding a better job yourself. Maintaining relationships with your business is just as important. If you are Garbett Homes, for instance, your concrete suppliers might be Staker Parson, and your lumber supplier might be SunPro. The strength of these bonds is what social capital is all about. Finally, at the Utah Foundation, we see the Salt Lake Chamber as part of our social network. We see the Chamber as part of our team, with both of us benefiting from this relationship at the end of the day. Founded in 2022, Proximity creates easy-to-use technology that helps candidates, elected officials and organizations connect with people, organize their work and strengthen civic engagement. Founder and CEO Becki Wright, joins us with more. Becki Wright: Campaigns run on relationships. But most teams run their relationships across five tools, ten spreadsheets, and a hundred text threads. With contacts in one place, outreach in another, and events somewhere else, it's like hunting for that one charging cord you need in a drawer full of tangled cables from phones you don't even own anymore. Proximity brings it closer together. We're software powering democracy — a modern platform that helps campaigns and community leaders organize contacts, run outreach, manage fundraising and keep supporters engaged from start to finish. With built-in automation and AI support, Proximity helps teams stay on top of priorities, spot what needs attention and make smarter decisions faster without losing the personal touch. State Director, Ann Marie Wallace joins us to discuss the Utah Proclamation for Women's Entrepreneurial Empowerment and its impact on women-owned businesses statewide. Ann Marie Wallace: On Women's Entrepreneurship Day, Utah leaders from government, business and nonprofit sectors came together to sign the Utah Proclamation for Women's Entrepreneurial Empowerment. Thirty organizations joined the ceremonial signing, committing to support women-owned businesses across the state. The Proclamation recognizes the vital role women entrepreneurs play in Utah's economy. Women-owned businesses generate roughly 14 billion dollars annually and employ over 89,000 Utahns. It also acknowledges the challenges women business owners often face, including access to capital, networks and growth opportunities. Signatories pledge to take meaningful action, such as mentoring women entrepreneurs, promoting policy improvements or showcasing women-led businesses. One simple, yet powerful way we can all contribute is by intentionally buying from women-owned businesses. Individuals and organizations can still add their signatures through November 19, 2026. The Salt Lake City Mission has been serving our community since 1938, providing hope and practical support to people experiencing homelessness, poverty and addiction through emergency services and long-term recovery programs. Pastor Shawn Clay, joins us with more. Pastor Shawn Clay: At the Salt Lake City Mission, our goal is simple. We want to share hope, restore dignity and transform lives. For more than 35 years, we have done this by offering meals, shelter, clothing, recovery programs, counseling, job training and life-skills support, helping people take steps toward stability and self-sufficiency. Every service is delivered with care, focusing on long-term change, not short-term fixes. We have served more than 7.2 million meals, supported thousands of families each month and helped countless others in need in many ways. The Salt Lake City Mission stays relevant by adapting programs to the changing needs of our community and working closely with volunteers and local partners who share our heart for service. You can donate, volunteer, host a food or clothing drive or give in-kind items. Every gift makes a real difference, opening doors to a brighter future. Let's work together to care for those in need. Derek Miller: The Salt Lake City Mission serves thousands of Utah families by providing millions of meals and offering programs that restore hope and dignity. Their work spans stone and masonry projects statewide, from historic restorations to civic and religious buildings. Co-owner and President, Robert Hicken, joins us with more. Robert Hicken: At RJ Masonry, our story began when I fell in love with masonry as a teenager and set out to build a company grounded in craftsmanship, service and integrity. Today, that commitment guides our team of more than 180 skilled professionals as we partner with architects, contractors and owners across Utah and beyond. From complex historic restorations to modern stone-architecture, our goal is the same on every brick, block, stone and masonry project we undertake: deliver exceptional quality through collaboration, innovation and meticulous attention to detail. We've had the privilege of contributing to projects such as the Salt Lake Temple Renovation, the Montage Deer Valley and the Salt Lake Performing Arts Center, where precision, coordination and respect for tradition are essential. Whether the job is large or small, or highly specialized, we bring a problem-solving mindset and a sincere dedication to exceeding expectations. That's the standard we've built our reputation on for more than 40 years. Derek Miller: RJ Masonry has completed a variety of projects across Utah, including both public and private developments. Their work includes a focus on project timelines, safety practices and collaboration with clients. Visit RJMasonryInc.com. I'm Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business.
