The National Forest Foundation, or NFF, partners with the U.S. Forest Service working across 193 million acres to reduce wildfire risk, restore watersheds and expand outdoor access. Utah Program Coordinator, Matthew Podolinsky, joins us with more. Matthew Podolinsky: Utah is home to more than 8 million acres of National Forest land — public lands that help define the state. In partnership with the Forest Service, the NFF is leading a variety of projects on these landscapes. Utah's outdoor recreation economy is a 10 billion dollar powerhouse supporting over 75,000 jobs. That economic development depends on well-maintained, accessible public lands. Alongside our partners, the NFF is modernizing aging infrastructure by restoring campgrounds and trails to improve access and elevate the outdoor experience across the state. But in Utah, this work goes beyond recreation. It's also about water. From restoring streams and floodplains to revitalizing wetlands, these efforts help secure reliable water sources for communities while supporting wildlife and biodiversity. The NFF's work turns a shared love of the outdoors into meaningful action, ensuring Utah's national forests remain healthy, resilient and accessible for generations to come. In 2023, Utah lawmakers created Utah Water Ways to unite conservation efforts and promote smarter water use through the Slow the Flow campaign, helping protect Utah's water for the future. Director of Community Engagement, Cynthia Bee, joins us with more. Cynthia Bee: Water fuels Utah's economy, communities and quality of life — and the future of this vital resource depends on what we do today. Government, businesses and nonprofits are stepping up, but the real power lies in aligning our efforts and speaking with one strong, unified voice for water conservation. In the coming decade, Utah must transform hundreds of millions of square feet of nonfunctional lawn to waterwise alternatives, and businesses are essential to making that change happen. Most commercial landscapes offer no recreational benefit, yet they consume enormous amounts of water. By partnering with the Slow the Flow campaign, companies can lead by example, showcase impactful results and inspire others to follow. We equip corporate green teams and employees with education, tools and mentoring to turn ideas into action. Businesses can also invest directly in the nonprofit Utah Water Ways, helping fund conservation projects in the communities they serve. Since its founding in 1922, Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital has provided world-class specialty care for children, supporting kids and families across the country and making a lasting impact. Hospital President, Dustin Lipson, joins us with more. Dustin Lipson: When we talk about the future of health of our community, we often think about hospitals or medical innovation. But one of the most powerful places to invest in health begins much earlier — during early childhood. Those first years build the foundation for a lifetime. Children grow quickly — and the environments they grow up in can help them flourish or make life much harder. Many children face Adverse Childhood Experiences, like chronic stress, instability or feeling unsafe. These don't just affect behavior — they can impact brain development, the immune system and long-term health, increasing the risk of conditions like asthma, depression, heart disease and even dementia. But there's real hope. Positive Childhood Experiences help build resilience. When a child has a caring adult, feels safe and has places to learn and play, they're better able to manage stress and grow in healthy ways. Together, we can help every child reach their full potential. Derek Miller: By providing expert pediatric care and support, Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital is improving children's lives. Utah Valley University's Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute serves as a living lab for AI, supporting AI literacy, developing workforce-aligned curricula and acting as a central resource for AI initiatives across campus and Utah's higher education system. Senior Director of the Applied AI Institute, Tyler Small, joins us with more. Tyler Small: So we know that AI can be incredibly disruptive in business, education and in work in general. So, at UVU, we created an AI transformation strategy with specific measurements that will enable each faculty member, and each student and staff to transform themselves, and integrate AI into their learning and work. And a big part of this is that we're building ways for faculty to be able to use AI to provide even more work experiences for their students. And it's not always possible to find an industry partner and manage a working relationship for students in their class projects. But while AI is making those industry connections easier, it's also providing ways to build simulations of relevant work scenarios — in seconds instead of hours. And so, in either case the students get to practice their skills on real-work problems. They work on corporate, social and nonprofit events, making sure every detail comes together for a seamless, high-quality experience. Co-Owner, Rachel Sorrels-Jones, joins us with more. Rachel Sorrels-Jones: We've all been there before: a corporate summit with harsh lights, bad audio and a distracted audience. As an event host, your biggest fear is being forgettable. Today the ‘standard' event is dead, and the Experience is here to stay. For years, AV was seen as a utility — like electricity. You plugged it in, and it worked. But now, your audience is different. Through shelter, housing, case management and support services, they are helping neighbors rebuild their lives. CEO Carol Hollowell, joins us with more. Carol Hollowell: Eleven years ago, we met a man on the street who simply needed a photo ID. That single encounter sparked what is now Utah's largest statewide provider of homeless and poverty services. At Switchpoint, we believe only one thing truly solves homelessness: a home. But a home without support services doesn't stick. So we wrap housing with everything people need, emergency shelter, food pantries, case management, programs for teens and youth and six social enterprises that fund our mission while training our clients. Today, we operate more than 13 sites with nearly 400 employees across Utah. Right now, our most urgent focus is a crisis hiding in plain sight: senior homelessness, which has increased by 42 percent, with veteran homelessness up 36 percent. That's a double-digit rise among the very people who helped build this community. It takes all of us, and we're grateful to stand together in addressing it. After launching my image consulting and styling services in 2021, I discovered that even high-achieving women can struggle with low self-image, often tying their worth to performing, over-functioning and external success. Through my unique framework of coaching and styling, I guide women to build a powerful, loving self-image rooted in internal, self-validation rather than outside approval. This shift – from seeking validation to embodying it – has been transformative for my clients, empowering them to show up more confidently and contribute to the world in even bigger ways. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Llama Butterfly, founded in 2022, is a boutique that brings Peruvian craftsmanship to life, offering handmade alpaca clothing, accessories, and home goods that combine comfort, quality, and cultural artistry. Owner, Patricia Smith, joins us with more. Patricia Smith: If you've never felt alpaca, imagine a fiber that's lighter than you expect, warmer than it looks and incredibly soft — and stays beautiful over time. Llama Butterfly began as a nonprofit dream to support children in Peru, and over time has since grown into a business where craftsmanship and community meet. Rooted in a spirit of “hope and forever,” the brand first took shape through watercolor florals and butterflies — symbols of beauty and transformation. Today, I work directly with artisan partners in Peru, home to about 80 percent of the world's alpacas. Alpaca is a sustainable natural fiber that's warm, breathable and long-lasting. The name itself came from my three-year-old, who kept singing, “I'm a butterfly, I'm a butterfly.” Llama honors my Peruvian roots and butterfly represents growth and change. After four years of markets, people kept asking, “Where is your store?” Now, we're proud that the answer is City Creek Center, East Block, Level 2. Derek Miller: Businesses like Llama Butterfly bring Peruvian culture, craftsmanship and diversity to Utah's local community. Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values
While Saving Elephants is dedicated to offering the conservative intellectual tradition in mercifully modern vernacular, fellow podcaster Nic Dunn has been on a similar mission: making the work of policy institutions more digestible. Nic joins Josh for a conversation around the important role policy can play in defusing political tension, alleviating poverty, and expanding the freedom and opportunities all Americans seek. About Nic Dunn Bio from Sutherland Institute Nic Dunn serves as Vice President of Strategy and Senior Fellow at Sutherland Institute. As VP of Strategy, Nic oversees the execution and strategic external impact of Sutherland's written and multimedia policy content. In his capacity as Senior Fellow, he leads the policy research, coalition building, and public advocacy for policies that strengthen opportunity and upward mobility. This policy focus includes social safety net reform, workforce issues, and support for the well-being of men and boys. His expert commentary and analysis can be found on Sutherland's weekly podcast, Defending Ideas, which he hosts, as well as in major outlets like Deseret News, Washington Examiner, National Review, and other Utah print and radio outlets. Nic brings more than 13 years of experience in public policy and strategic communications spanning state and local government and the private sector. Prior to Sutherland, Nic served as director of Utah Community Builders, the Salt Lake Chamber's nonprofit social impact foundation. In that role, Nic worked with the private sector to advance statewide initiatives in mental health, family policy, and upward mobility. Nic is also a member of the AEI Leadership Network, and the co-chair of the Salt Lake County Intergenerational Poverty Task Force. In other previous work, Nic ran public policy for the Utah Valley Chamber, served as senior policy advisor to Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee Winder Newton, directed media relations for the Utah Department of Workforce Services, and worked on Gov. Gary Herbert's communications staff as lead speechwriter. Nic has a master's degree in public policy from the University of Utah and dual bachelor's degrees in broadcast journalism and political science from the University of Nevada, Reno. Nic and his wife, Lizzie, live in Eagle Mountain with their two sons. Introducing Conservative Cagematches Ever since Leo Strauss published his magnum opus Natural Right and History, which ends by heavily implying Edmund Burke opened the door for the evils of historicism in the modern world, a great fissure in conservative nerddom erupted between those who align with either titan. Were Strauss' criticism of Burke warranted? Did Burke disavow natural rights and pave the way for the evils of authoritarianism, fascism, Marxism, and progressivism to come? Does a careful, esoteric reading of Natural Right and History reveal the Strauss secret family chili recipe? On Wednesday, March 4 at 6PM EST / 5PM CST, Saving Elephants will assemble an all-star panel to answer these questions and more. Representing Edmund Burke: Greg Collins of Yale University and Lauren Hall of the Rochester Institute of Technology Representing Leo Strauss: Steve Hayward of Pepperdine and the international woman of mystery, Lucretia of the University of Arizona You can watch the livestream on YouTube or Facebook
