Week 2 of our 4-part series on Disruptions in Church History. In case you missed it, here’s the description of what we’re doing… Welcome to a new format for the Postmodern Missionary Podcast. Let me tell you about it! Many have requested that I add a teaching component on here in addition to my interviews, which has been in the works for a while. I had teachings on how to do mission well. I had teachings on what Neo-colonialism looks like. AAAAND then Corona happened. My life and your life and every church and the whole world has been disrupted by the ‘rona. So instead I decided to take the opportunity to see what certain episodes in history might teach us about how to handle this disruption…the Black Plague, for example. So here we are with a four part series on Disruptions in Church History. Now, I few things you need to know: One, each week we will look at one disruption in Church History. We will wade through what the disruption was and then we’ll ask the question of how the church responded to it. You will find that sometimes the church handled what they were facing in a really positive and constructive and gospel-centered way. And sometimes…not so much. Two, this is by no means an exhaustive list, only stuff that I’ve encountered that I find instructive and interesting. Three, and this is important. I decided to do this topic before the most recent uprisings against police brutality in the US and before we started this newest critical conversation about race for our generation. Truthfully, it seems like now there are two disruptions going on. HOWEVER, I think this topic has something to say about this conversation too. Four, I personally am doing my own spiritual work toward becoming truly anti-racist, and I have been for a while now. This work is CENTRAL to being a postmodern missionary that does not cause harm. But this podcast is not directly about that. (Not directly about that.) My plan is to tell you how these disruptions were handled by sections of the church…for good or ill. I know that there will be parallels that can be drawn between the stories I tell here and what we’re facing together today. Now, I’m not going to make those connections in this podcast. Instead, I’m going to let you and the Holy Spirit and maybe some friends on your journey do that work together. My firm belief and conviction is that the church must respond to the disruptions of today…. Even if we don’t respond, that is still a response. Maybe looking back will help us to look forward. Number 5, and also very important, I think this is gonna be fun. I mean, like, nerdy fun. But still fun. And I’m super glad you’re here! REFERENCES Boer, Harry R. He’s got a new series on Indiegogo called Galactic Rodents of Mayhem, which is described as “an off the rails, edge-of-your-seat, deep space sci-fi adventure, featuring your soon-to-be FUR-AVORITE capybara bounty hunters!” We talk about how he’s brought this tale to be as well as what we might expect from him in the months ahead. 476 Romulus Augustulus, last Roman Emperor in the West, abdicates the throne after forces led by Odoacer invade Rome. Flavius Odoacer becomes the first king of Italy after leading a successful rebellion against Western Rome's young emperor. The beginning of his reign will traditionally mark the end of the Ancient Roman epoch and the start of the Middle Ages. 1781 Los Angeles, first an Indian village Yangma, is founded by Spanish decree. 1862 Robert E. Lee's Confederate army invades Maryland, starting the Antietam Campaign. It will eventually result in the Battle of Antietam, 13 days later, the bloodiest battle in history on American soil at that point. 1886 Apache leader Goyalkla, or as he's known to non-Native Americans, Geronimo, formally surrenders after the US Army 4th Cavalry relentlessly pursues him and his band of warriors throughout southern Arizona. For 30 years, the mighty Native American warrior had battled to protect his tribe's homeland; however, by 1886 the Apaches were exhausted and hopelessly outnumbered. General Nelson Miles accepted Geronimo's surrender, making him the last Native American warrior to formally give in to U.S. forces and signaling the end of the Indian Wars in the Southwest. 1941 German submarine U-652 fires at the U.S. destroyer Greer patrolling off Iceland. At this point there was no decleration of war between Germany and USA. President Roosevelt would later cite the incident as the catalyst for the "shoot-on-sight" policy US Naval vessels would follow until the formal declaration of war in December, after Pearl Harbor. It would later be known the the Greer had chased the sub and held contact with the sub for 3 hours and 28 minutes before the sub fired its first torpedo. The definition of "attack" is "an onset, an aggressive initiation of combat, a move which is the antithesis of 'defense.'" In that definition, the USS Greer had attacked the German submarine. 1998 Google is founded. The internet company, now synonymous with the act of finding information on the world wide web was created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. It started as a research project when Page and Brin were doctoral students at Stanford University.

Dr. Joseph Tainter is an anthropologist and historian who has studied collapse in numerous ancient civilization and penned The Collapse of Complex Societies. This is our first deeply historical episode and Dr. Tainter begins by offering his definition of complexity and taking us through the story of Western Rome's collapse. Extrapolating from the past, Dr. Tainter paints an alarming scene of our possible future. In our conversation, he critiques the primitivism of John Zerzan, the transhumanism of Max More, and the technological optimism of Ariel Waldman and Colin Camerer. What are we left with? Not optimism, not pessimism but, perhaps, Ragnarok.
