We thought “self-leadership” was just a corporate thing, until we realized it's the missing piece for women building real businesses and meaningful lives. In this episode, Brin'na Rollins-Williams shares how she walked away from a six-figure career at Target to reclaim her wholeness, voice, and legacy and how women entrepreneurs can do the same without burning out. This episode will walk you through a lesson on Self-Leadership…that is so needed in entrepreneurship.

You know what they say — Silicon Valley wasn't built in a day, nor was it built by just a small group of tech gurus. In fact, the origin story of the Valley is a complex story involving government, industry, and academia.Margaret O'Mara is a history professor at the University of Washington. Her latest book, The Code: Silicon Valley and the Remaking of America gives an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the making of the tech empire, and how it's grown into an economic engine. Margaret and Greg discuss the significant role the government played in the early days of Silicon Valley, key historical figures in the region's rise to prominence and factors that set it apart from other tech hubs like Boston, and how the ecosystem has evolved alongside politics, technology, and cultural shifts. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:How storytelling built Silicon Valley's legacy31:59: I think there's the story of the products, and then there's the story of the place, the story of the guys in garages. The story of this entrepreneurial genius, and that's a great, great story. It's part of the story. It leaves out this bigger landscape of government and society and people who are non-technical people, the Regis McKenna's of the world, who are so instrumental in making all this happen. But it's—I mean, I know as a historian—storytelling is powerful. That's how you help people understand and relate. And so Silicon Valley has been such a good storyteller. Why everyone should understand tech history04:27: It's really important for all of us as users of this technology to have a way to understand it and understand its history. Even if we don't know, even if we aren't programmers ourselves.Meritocracy alone hasn't changed the face of power53:16: We're seeing the people at the very, very top of power and influence are more homogenous than ever, which is showing that this meritocracy, this idea, just doesn't—only goes so far. So understanding the history kind of helps, I think, is really important in kind of getting why. Okay, why has this not changed? Why is this so baked into the model? But it also doesn't mean that we should just throw up our hands and say, well, this is the way it is.Federal research grants built founders not just labs11:57: Research money for universities is not only seeding basic research in labs and then seeding spinoff companies and commercializing technologies from those labs, but it's also educating people. When you look, kind of dollar for dollar, about, you know—when you look at Stanford, for example, if you just look at the tech space—I think biotech is different. Medical sciences are different because you have more of that kind of pipeline from lab to startup in that space. But when you're looking at computer hardware and software, it's more about the people that went to Stanford that went on to found companies, right? Everyone from Hewlett and Packard to Brin and Page and everyone in between. That is, it's kind of a people factory, so that's part of it. And that federal money is paying for people for science and engineering programs. So that's a really important component.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Frederick TermanVannevar BushRegional Advantage: Culture and Competition in Silicon Valley and Route 128 by AnnaLee SaxenianRobert NoyceBurt McMurtryTerry WinogradBill DraperPitch JohnsonRegis McKennaWilson Sonsini Goodrich & RosatiGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at University of WashingtonProfessional WebsiteGuest Work:The Code: Silicon Valley and the Remaking of America

Canada and Mexico both responded with their own tariffs.Industry experts predict vehicle prices could rise between $4,000 and $10,000, with Ford CEO Jim Farley cautioning that prolonged tariffs could "blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we have never seen."Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association said that there is potential for U.S. and Canadian auto production to revert to "2020 pandemic-level idling and temporary layoffs within the week.”Key auto models at risk include the Toyota RAV4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Equinox and Blazer, and the Honda Civic and CR-V, while European automakers with manufacturing in Mexico, including Volkswagen, Stellantis, and BMW, saw their stocks drop sharplyThe STOXX Europe 600 Automobiles and Parts index fell 3.8% and Continental AG, a major supplier, saw an 8.4% drop in shares.Used Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles saw the steepest depreciation of any cars in 2024, according to Fast Company's analysis of CarGurus data.Model Y prices dropped 25.5%, while Model 3 prices fell 25% from January 2024 to January 2025.Comparatively, the Nissan Maxima only dropped 5.2%, and the Ford Mustang declined 5%.Full Top 10: Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, Land Rover Range Rover, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Chevrolet Express Cargo, Ford Transit Connect, RAM ProMaster, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Ford Expedition, all with over 19% depreciationGoogle co-founder Sergey Brin is back and pushing Google DeepMind (GDM) teams to accelerate their progress toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In a newly released memo, Brin outlines the urgency and expectations for Google's AI teams.Brin emphasizes the need for 60-hour work weeks, daily office attendance, and faster execution by prioritizing simple solutions, code efficiency, and small-scale experiments for faster iteration. He calls for a shift away from “nanny products” and urges teams to “trust our users” more.Brin, who has no formal role at Google beyond a board seat, stepped in over the head of Google DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, signaling the urgency of the AGI race."I think we have all the ingredients to wHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

"It could pose real dangers for our country as well.""Social media is giving up on fact-checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit." he said, appearing to refer to Meta's ending its fact-checking program.without safeguards, AI could "spawn new threats to our rights, our way of life, to our privacy, how we work and how we protect our nation."161 years ago, a New Zealand sheep farmer predicted AI doomOn June 13, 1863, a letter titled "Darwin among the Machines" written by Samuel Butler (under the pseudonym Cellarius) published in The Press newspaper of Christchurch warned about the potential dangers of mechanical evolution and called for the destruction of machines, foreshadowing the development of what we now call artificial intelligence—and the backlash against it from people who fear it may threaten humanity with extinction. It presented what may be the first published argument for stopping technological progress to prevent machines from dominating humanity. The letter drew direct parallels between Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and the rapid development of machinery, suggesting that machines could evolve consciousness and eventually supplant humans as Earth's dominant species."We are ourselves creating our own successors." he wrote. "We are daily adding to the beauty and delicacy of their physical organisation; we are daily giving them greater power and supplying by all sorts of ingenious contrivances that self-regulating, self-acting power which will be to them what intellect has been to the human race. In the course of ages we shall find ourselves the inferior race."In the letter, he also portrayed humans becoming subservient to machines, but first serving as caretakers who would maintain and help reproduce mechanical life—a relationship Butler compared to that between humans and their domestic animals, before it later inverts and machines take over.Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon says AI can write 95% of an IPO prospectusThe initial registration prospectus for an IPO, called S1, usually took a six-person team two weeks to complete. However, now 95 per cent of the work can be completed by AI in minutes, he said. Goldman Sachs chief David Solomon questions start-ups' need to listHe also asked private companies to take ‘great caution' before deciding to go public, adding that the depth of capital in private markets has made the need to go public redundant for many. We delve into unconventional marketing strategies, emphasizing the importance of boldness and creativity in a crowded market. Rick shares anecdotes about impactful campaigns, such as a direct ad to a CEO that led to a significant response, and discusses the necessity of courage in marketing. The episode highlights the psychological impact of disruptive advertising on competitors and clients, encouraging executives to embrace risk for standout success. Christopher's engaging style and Rick's authentic insights make this a must-listen for marketing enthusiasts. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Creating Memorable Marketing Tactics Rick Bennett is celebrated for his ability to craft ads that not only capture attention but also provoke strong reactions. One of the standout moments in the episode is Christopher's recollection of Rick's iconic website from 1996. This site was more than just a digital presence; it was a masterclass in contextualizing advertisements within the competitive landscape. Rick shares an intriguing story about creating an ad for a political candidate designed to catch the eye of Sergey Brin at Google. The ad claimed the candidate had a revolutionary plan to eliminate income taxes and the national debt. This bold approach succeeded in getting the candidate a direct call from Brin, showcasing the power of direct and audacious communication. Vetting Executives for Courage Christopher probes Rick about how he assesses the courage of CEOs when considering collaboration. Rick introduces the concept of a "self-weeding garden," a metaphor for identifying the right clients. He emphasizes the importance of being straightforward and authentic, stating, "God hates cowards," to underline the necessity of courage in marketing. Christopher praises Rick for being unapologetically himself, noting that his authenticity sets him apart in the industry. Rick recounts his early experiences, including a pivotal moment with Larry Ellison, where he confidently challenged Ellison's views on advertising. This encounter not only solidified Rick's reputation but also transformed Ellison into an advocate for advertising. Guerilla Marketing: Making Generals Surrender Rick shared some important insights about guerilla marketing. One of the goals of guerilla warfare is to make the generals of the opposing army make mistakes. “My ads will attack your competition like a pack of speedy, crazed wolverines” – Rick Bennett He adds, “Demoralize the generals of the opposing army, then they'll make mistakes. You have your investors to say, ‘Hey we have a winner here' and you have to make the employees feel that their boss is kicking ass.” In the end, marketers should aim for a campaign where you make opposing generals psychologically surrender, even before any battle has begun.
