“Be holy, as I am holy,” is a verse that still triggers me deeply. This verse was used as a weapon, to place a heavy burden on people, shaming them and in essence saying, “you need to do better.” I wanted to have this conversation today because I know deep down that the way I understood “holiness” from my church upbringing wasn't the real definition of what Jesus meant when he invited us to be like Him (aka “holy”). I left this conversation feeling inspired and hungry to truly be holy. I hope you find the same. Learn more about Caleb. Book a session with Joey. Follow us on TikTok. Watch us on YouTube. Do you have a hard time believing the Bible? Do you have a hard time believing verses about who God says you are? Even if you could believe what God says it true, what difference would that make? In this message, Pastor Scott Savage continues this series of messages on 1 Peter by teaching on 1 Peter 1:13-25. He shares the four things we would do if we lived out who God says we are.
What Is Holiness? Holiness is a word that can make us feel uneasy. It seems lofty, threatening, alien. We instinctively sense that God's holiness has dangerous overtones. His purity calls our sinful attachments into question, demanding that we forsake them in order to enjoy the greatest of all goods—belonging to a God of infinite love and power. To come casually with our hearts grasping tightly to the sins we cherish or to come lightly as though they are no big deal, might be like throwing ourselves onto a roaring fire with the expectation we will not perish. How, then, can we—sinful and broken human beings—hope to come into the presence of a holy God and survive the experience? When God was forging a relationship with the Israelites, he told Moses to "Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). God was calling his people into relationship with himself and he wanted his people not only to survive the experience but to be nourished by it. But for that to happen, they needed to know the ground rules, needed to come to him on his terms not theirs. The Hebrew word for “holiness” is qōdes, a word that highlights the realm of the sacred in contrast to everything common and profane. The adjective qādôš, “holy,” refers to God and what belongs to him. In various places in the Hebrew Scriptures, God is called by the title the “Holy One of Israel.”
WHAT IS HOLINESS? Catholics are taught to prize holiness—to admire it in others and to strive for it in their own lives. But we're never quite told what holiness is. In Holy Is His Name: The Transforming Power of God's Holiness in Scripture, Scott Hahn seeks to define the term in order to help us better understand our relationship with holiness. Tracing the meaning of holiness first through the Old Testament and then the New, Hahn masterfully reveals how God gradually transmits his holiness to his people—through creation, right worship, and more—and ultimately transforms them through the sharing of his divine life.
Our eighth week continues, asking the question: "What Is Holiness?" - a guidebook can be found at blueprintchurch.com/resources
Holiness is definitely a difficult topic to discuss, it seems that it is one of those faux pas topics during proper gatherings, because let’s be honest, it can be a tricky one to navigate. There is a lot of passion and conviction that stems from an individual’s beliefs and lifestyles, and oftentimes in history people have gone to war over religious disagreements or differences. So in this episode, Kristin Llamas has invited Carrie Mills, curator of the art galleries at the Nashville Jewish Community Center, to join her in discussing holiness outside the realm of organized religion. The question seems to become "What is the essence of holiness?" as they enter into a humbled conversation about the quest for holiness. Carrie Mills is curator of the art galleries at the Gordon Jewish Community Center, or JCC here in Nashville and she also writes for the Jewish Observer. Carrie’s life has been filled with creativity, from fashion and product design in New York to now styling models for Vogue photoshoots. Listen to how she has found her way to Nashville, TN and all the adventures she had inbetween. Mills shares with us that her spirituality is collecting essences that come from the best parts of various religions that she has encountered. The many paths that she has taken has lead her to find that the heart of holiness is self-love. She explains that in order to truly share love with others you must understand how to love yourself. Although loving yourself maybe harder to learn and do, it is essential for spiritual growth. She recalls a moment where she asked her rabbi “where do you find God?”...her response, “within yourself.” Grow your understanding of holiness this week with Carrie and Kristin. Learn how self-care and self-love can help strengthen your spirituality and share your thoughts on what holiness means to you. From the depictions of ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses to large frescoes commissioned by the Catholic Church, such as Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, we quickly see religious storytelling through the old masters.
