The Transforming Power of an ImageIt is Advent once again. I don't have to tell you this, of course. If you walk into our church building on Sunday, you will know immediately something is afoot. The church is festooned with trees, garlands, wreaths, and candles—in a word, concrete images that suggest something extraordinary is happening. It is like the more glorious a thing is, the more we want to set its significance to both proclaim it and make our joy more complete. Speaking of images, we live in a world surrounded by images. Social media and the internet, not to mention TV, or our computers, phones, and clothing, all bear images. As we drive our cars down the road, our senses are confronted with images that tell a story of a kind of delicious food, a certain kind of attire, or a gadget we might need to make our lives happier or better. It isn't that we discovered the power of images in the twentieth or twenty-first centuries. People have always used images because images are more powerful than words or bullet points. Images are processed 60,000 times faster than text and sort of bypass our critical thinking and factualities. The ancients knew this, and the way Rome held power was through images of Caesar. His image was everywhere, reminding people that they owed supreme loyalty, safety, sons, and daughters to Caesar. You might not see Caesar unless you were a person of supreme rank or royalty, but the poorest peasant knew who he was and that they owed him everything. So when the Apostle Paul writes that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, he essentially dropped a bomb shell on Rome's reign of terror, and it has been subverting lives, communities, nations, and empires ever since. Join us Sunday, and we begin to look at all the excellencies of Jesus this Advent Season. It really is a season of joy and wonder. I am so thankful that we have a whole month set aside to ponder the mystery of the Incarnation!

Hope for Right Now: A Walking with Purpose Podcast

Hope for Right Now Podcast – Grace and Glory: Philippians 2 Join Lisa and Laura for our four-week podcast series—Grace and Glory, based on Saint Paul's letter to the Philippians.  Often called The Epistle of Joy, Saint Paul's letter overflows with rejoicing, gratitude, and encouragement—amazing, when you consider that Paul wrote it from a prison cell. As women seeking joy but who often feel confined by our circumstances, what was Saint Paul's secret? How do we rejoice in our suffering? How do we remain grateful when our situation is the opposite of what we were hoping for?  In this second episode of Grace and Glory, Lisa and Laura talk about unity, humility, and how to become shining lights in the midst of a dark and broken world.  Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Philippians 2  Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Matthew 23:12: Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. James 4:10: Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. Proverbs 29:23: A man's pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Every day this week, slowly read the second chapter in The Letter to the Philippians. Consider looking up different Bible translations to help you enter more deeply. What verse or word stands out to you? Ask yourself: Do I have absolute confidence in Jesus as Lord? October 22, 2025We reflected deeply on John chapter 8, focusing on Jesus' divine authority, His interaction with the woman caught in adultery, and His declaration as the light of the world. The discussion centered on how Jesus revealed His identity gradually and how the Pharisees' rejection reflected hardened hearts despite their knowledge of His divine origin. We explored the believer's authority in Christ, emphasizing that true authority flows from intimacy with the Word of God and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. The call was clear—to study and hide the Word in our hearts so we can speak and act with divine guidance. The conversation turned to God's love and forgiveness, as we considered Jesus' response to sin—not condemnation, but grace. We reflected on daily experiences where God's presence and love are evident, from small interactions to moments of service, and how these reflect His character in us.The meeting also examined spiritual growth through the lens of humility, brokenness, and gratitude—recognizing that God fills empty vessels and works through weakness, not pride. We closed with encouragement to keep our focus on Christ's perspective, overcome pride through gratitude, and rest in the Spirit's continual guidance toward holiness and service.Themes:Jesus' divine authority and identity in John 8Grace over condemnation: the woman caught in adulteryThe believer's authority through Christ and the WordGod's patience, kindness, and daily presenceThe Holy Spirit's role in guidance and revelationSpiritual humility and brokenness as vessels for God's useOvercoming pride through gratitude and Christ-centered perspectiveThe call to gentle teaching and serviceReflection Question: In moments of failure or pride, do I respond like the Pharisees—defending myself—or like the woman—receiving grace and walking in the light of Christ's forgiveness?

Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. James 4:14: You do not know about tomorrow. Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Philippians 4:13: I can do all things in Him who strengthens me. Isaiah 43:2: When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and through rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 2 Corinthians 10:5: We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. If you are feeling worried, anxious, or afraid, ask yourself, “Where is my focus?” What specific fears or "what-if" scenarios are you clinging to? Life can change in an instant. And, in that moment, the illusion of control can either take you down a path of fear and worry or a path of surrender and peace.   In today's podcast, Laurie Brooker, from our community group in Trussville, Alabama, shares her story of how the Lord guided her to trust His sovereign plan as He strengthened and upheld her through the loss of her husband and a cancer diagnosis of her own (all in the same year). Laurie will courageously remind you that while life can sometimes place unwanted titles on you, God can bring joy out of the pain and goodness into your story. _________________________________________________________   Verse of the Week: Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”   Challenge of the Week: Laurie spoke often of how her community surrounded her in the suffering her family was experiencing. What can you do for someone who is struggling this week? Hope for Right Now Podcast – Truth with Handles: How to Set Boundaries When you're navigating life's challenges, you don't need truth dumped all over you or shouted at you all at once; you need practical, faith-filled wisdom and Bible verses for everyday struggles. At Walking with Purpose, we call this “truth with handles”—biblical truths you can actually hold onto and provide relief from your pressure points. Each week during our six-week series, Truth with Handles, Laura shares a new topic with a corresponding Scripture passage, breaking it down into actionable, hope-filled steps to strengthen your faith and bring peace to your daily life. Today's topic: How to Set Boundaries. Do you struggle to take ownership of your life? Are you so consumed with everyone else's issues, that you've made their problems your own? As a Christian do you wonder when it is biblically appropriate to set limits? Tune in to hear how Laura is lightening her load and working her way to owning her life through setting boundaries! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Matthew 5:37: Let what you say be simply “yes” or “no”; anything more than that comes from evil. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Genesis 1:27-28: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and of the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” Galatians 6:2: Bear one another's burdens. Galatians 6:5: For each man will have to bear his own load. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Ask yourself: What's in my knapsack? Is it my FAB (feelings, attitudes, behaviors)? Am I carrying the feelings and problems of others? Am I doing for someone what they ought to be doing for themselves? Am I carrying a load that does not belong to me? Is my help helping, or am I making things worse?   Show mentions. Read OnlineFor God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.  John 3:16–17If Jesus would never have given His life on a cross for the salvation of the world, then a cross would never have been seen in “exultation.” A cross, in and of itself, is an instrument of death, a horrific and violent death. It's also an instrument of humiliation and torture. Yet, today, the Cross is seen as a holy and blessed object. We hang crosses in our homes, wear them around our neck, keep them in our pocket on the end of the rosary, and spend time in prayer before them. The Cross is now an exalted image by which we turn to God in prayer and surrender. But that is only the case because it was on a cross that we were saved and brought to eternal life.If you step back and consider the amazing truth that one of the worst instruments of torture and death is now seen as one of the holiest of images on earth, it should be awe inspiring. Comprehending this fact should lead us to the realization that God can do anything and everything. God can use the worst and transform it into the best. He can use death to bring forth life. Though our celebration today, the “Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross,” is first and foremost a feast by which we give glory to the Father for what He did in the Person of His divine Son, it is also a feast by which we must humbly understand that God can “exalt” every cross we endure in life and bring forth much grace through them. What is your heaviest cross? What is the source of your greatest suffering? Most likely, as you call this to mind, it is painful to you. Most often, our crosses and sufferings are things we seek to rid ourselves of. We easily point to crosses in life and blame them for a lack of happiness. We can easily think that if only this or that were to change or be removed, then our life would be better. So what is that cross in your life? The truth is that whatever your heaviest cross is, there is extraordinary potential for that cross to become an actual source of grace in your life and in the world. But this is only possible if you embrace that cross in faith and hope so that our Lord can unite it to His and so that your crosses can also share in the exaltation of Christ's Cross. Though this is a profoundly deep mystery of faith, it is also a profoundly deep truth of our faith. Reflect, today, upon your own crosses. As you do, try not to see them as a burden. Instead, realize the potential within those crosses. Prayerfully look at your crosses as invitations to share in Christ's Cross. Say “Yes” to your crosses. Choose them freely. Unite them to Christ's Cross. As you do, have hope that God's glory will come forth in your life and in the world through your free embrace of them. Know that these “burdens” will be transformed and become a source of exaltation in your life by the transforming power of God. My exalted Lord, I turn to You in my need and with the utmost faith in Your divine power to save. Please give me the grace I need to fully embrace every cross in my life with hope and faith in You. Please transform my crosses so that You will be exalted through them and so that they will become an instrument of Your glory and grace. How Two Legal Changemakers Are Redefining Leadership, Collaboration, and Racial Justice in a Divided World In this episode of Everyday Conversations on Race, Simma Lieberman is joined by Professor Susan Sturm of Columbia Law School, and community change agent Richard Gray of the Center for Collaborative Education. These longtime collaborators talk candidly about their friendship across race, the evolution of their leadership work, and how confronting racism means more than just talking about it. They explore how white people can genuinely show up in racial justice work, the difference between performative allyship and real connection, and the need for inclusive institutional change—especially when that change is under attack. Together, they break down the core themes from Susan's book What Might Be: Confronting Racism to Transform Our Institutions. You'll hear stories of personal transformation, resistance against performative politics, and lessons in building multiracial and multigenerational coalitions. When was the last time you told someone, “I love you”? I hope it hasn't been long since you expressed love to someone, and I hope it hasn't been long since someone returned that expression of love to you. Love has the power to transform us, both as givers and receivers of love. I'm not speaking necessarily of romantic love, though of course that certainly can transform us, can't it? Rather, just love in general—knowing that we are loved and being able to love others can change you, put a smile on your face, put a lift in your step, transform the mundaneness of life into something meaningful. All because we are loved and are loving. That's why Paul wrote to the Corinthians that love never fails. What else in life can you say never fails? The best computer you can buy can and does fail. The best friend can fail you. The best job can fail to deliver what you need or want. God can never fail you, and God is love. Love never fails. It never fails to transform a person who is difficult, though it may take longer than you want. I remember when a friend of mine, Beth, worked for a very difficult manager. No one liked her; she was demanding, unfriendly, sour—just a miserable person. God used a verse—Proverbs 19:6—to tell Beth how to show love to this woman. That verse says, “Many curry favor with a ruler, and everyone is the friend of one who gives gifts.” She knew God wanted her to give this woman a gift on her birthday. She bought something small but thoughtful, wrote a note thanking her for pursuing excellence, and left it on her desk on her birthday. This simple act of love transformed that woman, and she and Beth became friends from that point on. With tears in her eyes, she said to Beth that no one had ever given her a birthday gift before. Because Beth was willing to obey God's voice to show love to this woman, it transformed her, filling up a huge empty space inside of her and changing that relationship. Love is powerful. It never fails. I hope you will bask in the incredibly good news that God loves you and nothing can separate you from his love. And then you will become more and more intentional about loving others. It has the power to transform you, your relationships, your attitude, your productivity—love transforms us. Believe me, it's true.

Why is it so important for us to be loved? We were created by God with this need to love and be loved. This need is at the core of your being, and if you don't feel you are loved, it leaves a huge empty space in your sense of worth and value. The sad truth is if you grew up without feeling loved as you should have been, it can leave you emotionally needy, and that means you can't love others as you should. You don't have love to give, so to speak. This lack of love and loving then can lead to all kinds of emotional and mental problems, such as resentment, bitterness, a judgmental spirit, or depression. And then your lack of love from others begets more lack of love from you to others. It becomes a vicious cycle. This great need for love can lead you to look for love in all the wrong places, as the song goes, and put you on an endless quest for acquiring love, and that quest actually takes you further and further away from true, unconditional love. Can you relate to this? No doubt you know people who are on or have been on that futile quest for love. Here's the incredibly good news: God's love for you can fill up that emptiness inside, which then gives you the ability to love others, and then you'll discover the love you give others comes back to you. We get love by giving it away, and we have love to give away because we know we are loved by Jesus. If you want to fill up your inner coffers with love, find some ways today to love others. Who is in your life today? How can you give them love? Here are some suggestions: Purpose in your heart to find something good about that person or people in your life today and express it in words to them. Listen to someone's story without criticizing or lecturing them—even without giving advice. Call someone who is needy and say, “I'm here for you if you need me.” Compliment someone on a job well done, an attractive outfit, a kindness offered. Smile! It doesn't take much to share love with someone else. We just have to remember to do it. Of course, we need to pray God will help us to become lovers—people who willingly and frequently share his love with others. Remember, love begets love. Try it! You won't be sorry you did.

I'm examining how love transforms people—it truly does! Researchers tell us that loving and being loved actually changes our brains, our thought patterns, and our reactions. That's what God's love for us can do. It has the power to make us productive, grateful, kind, and generous toward everyone, even people who are not easy to love. For example, here's one of the changes we will see in others as we become better and better at sharing God's love with them: Love has the power to inspire someone to greatness. Do you know someone who is wasting their potential? Maybe they don't even know they have potential, or perhaps they're fearful of trying. I wonder—if they knew you see potential in them, if you loved them by encouraging them, could it empower them to reach their potential? Do you remember when Jesus called Simon as a disciple and gave him the name of Peter? He referred to Peter as a rock and said Peter would play a pivotal role in establishing the early church and spreading the gospel. Was Simon Peter a rock when Jesus called him? No, he had a long way to go before he reached “rock status,” but Jesus called him what he would become, and Peter became the rock of the early church. I have a dear friend who many years ago was bothered by a stutter. But I saw potential in her; she had the instincts of a performer, and I encouraged her to take small parts in a ministry at church that put her in front of people. She loved doing it, so she joined Toastmasters, where she learned to make presentations. Now she is very polished and gifted as a speaker and actor, and that stutter has been conquered. I just loved the potential I saw in her, and she has done what she never thought she could do as a result. Your love of encouragement could transform someone's life. Don't underestimate the transforming power of love.
