We take a look at Who Stole Feminism? by Christina Hoff Sommers. Who Stole Feminism? explores the rise of a vindictive strain of feminism in the late 80s and 90s.
Christina Hoff Sommers is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, where she studies the politics of gender and feminism—as well as free expression, due process, and the preservation of liberty in the academy. Christina is perhaps best known for her 1994 book Who Stole Feminism? How Women Have Betrayed Women, which was instrumental in giving a voice to those who dared to question rigid doctrines about women and men and the arguments feminists make that cause a rift between them. Christina's popular podcast, Femsplainers, which she co-hosts with author Danielle Crittenden, is described as a “weekly girl's night out, where Christina and Danielle "dish on everything from #metoo and sex to, well, doing the dishes.” Christina is like a friend who studies and does her homework before the party. She counters politically correctness with wit and charm. Her popular video blog, The Factual Feminist, has garnered more than 4 million views. Today, Alisha and Mattio haven't read Who Stole Feminism? by Christina Hoff Sommers. Jynx had read it because she was a young conservative (can you even picture that??). The topic of the book leads to conversations about feminism in the #metoo era, the relationships between gay men and straight women, how feminism has evolved from generation to generation, and how straight are the worst. Definitely don't read this book, and listen to this podcast instead. Overbooked is part of the EaseDrop Podcast Network. On December 13, 2018, I was a guest on Femsplainers with Christina Hoff Sommers and Danielle Crittenden. We discussed, among other topics, the secrets of a long marriage, the problems with dating apps, how to handle a belligerent toddler, and the motivation of my radical feminist critics. Femsplainers (http://femsplainers.com/) is “the gossipy, smart, witty conversation you’d have if all of your girlfriends (and some of your guy friends too!) were experts on the hot topics of the moment. High spirited and high minded, we don’t argue or whine but seek to get to the heart of the matter, over cocktails (or wine).” We taped in front of a live audience at AEI, the American Enterprise Institute (http://www.aei.org/) Ms. Hoff Sommers is the author of Who Stole Feminism? Deconstructive Criticism talk with Christina Hoff Summers. She is an American author, philosopher, and feminist who have written extensively about the damage caused to the feminist cause by socialist feminists. She is an author of several books on the subject. Among them Who Stole Feminism? (1994) and The War Against Boys (2000), I contacted Christina because I wanted to know what she knows about the Swedish feminist Yvonne Hirdman – who is responsible for introducing what you might call the theory of the Patriarchy – or to do a literal translation from the original swedish – the gender system – which introduces the Marxist idea of sex as class to Swedish Academia and later government policy. Or if she knows of any other exchange between American and Swedish socialist feminists. Which is a bit unfair because Christina is interesting in her own right. She is a contributor to among other publications the Atlantic, and has already been derided in certain parts of the swedish media, for an article she had written there which mentioned sweden. Of course they criticized it in Swedish so there is no way that Christina would be able to know about it or reply. This episode is a supplement to our current "Sex-Ed" series. Christina Hoff Sommers is a former philosophy professor who now works as a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. She is the author of several books including Who Stole Feminism, The War Against Boys, and Freedom Feminism. She has a YouTube channel called "The Factual Feminist." Discussion: - I think the experiences I've had in the last year or so have led to an overly hostile and simplistic view of both academia and feminism. -It's not feminism and it's not academia. The problem is where these two worlds collide - academic authoritarianism - What is feminism to Christina? - Responsibility for uncomfortable emotions - The human need for safety, tragically expressed - EQUALITY VS EQUITY - Feminism's CLASSICAL LIBERAL ORIGINS - 3 decades of specious research coming out of gender studies? they believe they are objective, any dissent is the ideology - Tragedy Collecting: how the culture or environment of academia contributes to this problem - The war Against Boys - pathologizing boy behavior - school creates problems - Are children generally hurt by gendered play Please Support School Sucks Our Amazon Wish List Donate With Bitcoin Or Join the A/V Club Support Us On Patreon Shop With Us At Amazon Your continued support keeps the show going and growing, which keeps us at the top of the options for education podcasts and leads to new people discovering this message. It's our last episode on campus protests and political correctness for a while, we promise! But it's a fun one. David and Tamler welcome two guests on the opposite side of the debate spectrum. Recent Yale Alum, cognitive scientist, freelance writer, (and writer of novel-length emails) Vlad Chituc joins both of us to defend the Yale protests, provide some context, and explain why the good people at FIRE are hypocritical about free expression. In the middle segment, Tamler talks with his notorious stepmother and "factual feminist" Christina Hoff Sommers (author of "Who Stole Feminism?" and "The War Against Boys"). They argue over whether the new political correctness poses a serious threat to campus climate, whether it is even "new," and over whether one is obligated to smoke weed on Joe Rogan's podcast. Plus, Tamler gets all huffy about the panic over terrorism, and we read some email responses to VBW Episode 78 ("Wizards Uprising"). Oh, and we have a recording a date set for the Mr. Robot episode!LinksVlad Chituc [vladchituc.com]Christina Hoff Sommers [aei.org]"Fear in the Air, Americans Look Over Their Shoulders" [nytimes.com]The Coddling of the American Mind [theatlantic.com]Who Stole Feminism by Christina H. Chuck and Patrick interview Christina Hoff Summers, author of Who Stole Feminism on the issue of equal work for equal pay and other issues. Patrick launches a laundry list of items, mostly lies, regarding the so-called "war on woman" by Republicans. After a real scrum, Chuck and Patrick continue the talk with Dave Johnson joining in. Patrick pushes this demented talking point emanating out of the left that "liberals" are into facts while conservatives run on opinion and emotionalism. Chuck is convinced that this meme came out of the left-wing Netroots Nation" convention recently attended by both Patrick and Chuck.
