Why do some members of the “elite class”—those who are educated, wealthy, and largely raised in stable, two-parent homes—publicly advocate for harmful beliefs while not subscribing to them in their private lives? This week marks Are You Kidding Me?'s 100th episode! For this special episode, Naomi and Ian are joined by Rob Henderson, psychologist and author of the recent book Troubled: A Memoir of Foster Care, Family, and Social Class. Having experienced an unstable childhood in the foster care system before then enlisting in the military and going on to complete a PhD in psychology, Rob observed a phenomenon among American elites he eventually coined as “luxury beliefs.” Luxury beliefs are held ideas that confer status to the wealthy while inflicting harm on the poor and working class. Rob discusses where he believes this phenomenon originated, the practical impact it has for low-income communities, and how he tries to reverse the trend through sharing data and encouraging people to think more deeply about the ideas they are espousing. Today we're talking to psychiatrist Dr. Sally Satel about how woke ideology and progressivism are working their way into the mental health field. We talk about the consequences of therapists and other mental health professionals using leftist ideology when treating their patients and how harmful it is when you absolve people of any responsibility for their issues and instead blame systemic issues and society as a whole. Dr. Satel explains how this happened and how this kind of therapy is ineffective at helping people work through their problems. At a time when mental health problems are ripping through young people, the last thing we need to be doing is feeding them woke platitudes from Instagram or TikTok. --- Today's Sponsors: Cozy Earth — for a limited time save 35% off your order at CozyEarth.com/ALLIE & enter promo code 'ALLIE' at checkout. They cover the opioid crisis, addiction, recovery, how it's a miracle anyone ever gets sober, categorizing addiction as a disease, focusing on stupid cosmetic stuff in the face of overwhelming problems, why addict patients must take an active role in their own care and recovery, and what information and knowledge is being displaced by CRT training in medical schools. By Rick Sapio| Paperback, Hardcover One Nation Under Therapy by Christina Hoffsummer and Dr. Sally Satel   About Rick Sapio Rick is a life-long entrepreneur who started his first business, a bicycle repair shop, after the death of his father when he was just 13 years old. Since that time he has founded more than 20 companies. Rick is the seventh of nine children raised by a mother with serious, life-long mental-health issues. He learned early in life that it's best to think positively about the cards one's been dealt; no matter how difficult those cards seem. Since 1994, Rick has been the founder and CEO of Mutual Capital Alliance, Inc. (“MCA”), a financial holding company. MCA both directly, and through its affiliated funds, has invested into more than 120 different companies. He is a founding GP of Mutual Capital Partners, a private equity firm, since 2003. He is also the founder of the USA Mutuals family of funds, since 2001. Rick is the founding and six-time Chairman of the Gathering of Titans Program. This annual event – currently in its 15th year - is an “entrepreneurs-only” gathering of successful business leaders focused on making the world a better place. This event takes place annually at MIT in Boston. He is a graduate of Rutgers University with a B.S. in Engineering. In 2018, Rick co-authored and published, Who's In Your Room, a unique book and platform that advocates that the quality of one's life is dependent on the quality of the people in their life. In the 4 decades since he started his first business, Rick has learned that business growth and success are accelerated when a few key principles are applied. When Rick realized that less than 1% of companies implement these skills, he created "The 12 Foundational Principles of Business;” which form the foundation of his BFS program. He believes that virtually any individual or company can be put on the straightforward path to prosperity and exponential growth, by learning to implement these principles. There's no need to contest or censor divergent views on addiction and mental illness as told, for instance, by Koren Zailckas, William Styron, and T Kira Madden. They are effortlessly assimilated into the big ball of wax of the standard disease theory. The process is aided and abetted by leading theorists and commentators like Sally Satel, David Brooks, Maia Szalavitz, and the New York Times. Stanton, on the other hand, impolitely disputes these things, while Zach tries to toe the line between confrontation and understanding. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/support

First up, Steve shares his thoughts on a bunch of economic numbers coming out including residential housing prices, consumer confidence index and durable goods numbers. He also speaks to the upcoming United Nations meeting and the United Kingdom Supreme Court. Then, with a personal net worth of over $18 billion dollars, venerable Wall Street titan and Blackstone Group Cofounder, Chair and CEO, Steve Schwarzman, has become the world’s most powerful financial leader. This hard-fought success is documented in his new book, What It Takes: Lessons In The Pursuit Of Excellence which details Schwarzman’s remarkable journey from not knowing the difference between a stock and a bond at his first Wall Street job to leading an investment firm that controls companies worth over $500 billion. One of the key takeaways? The person at the top of any organization should always be eager to learn—and to teach. Which is why he has created a uniquely successful culture at Blackstone aimed to help employees thrive. He’s also never hesitated to try to teach those who were ranked higher than him. For example, he told the dean of Harvard Business School during his time there that his organization was not well-run. In this episode, he shares with Steve his colorful path from working in his father’s local shop as a young boy to negotiating one of the biggest mergers in U.S. corporate history at the age of thirty. This is part one in a two-part conversation. Last, Steve's "Reads of the Week" are three articles. They are: “Antitrust Can’t Catch Big Tech” by Andy Kessler, "Don’t Ban Nontobacco Flavored ecigarettes. Adults are in more Danger than your Kids" by Sally Satel and ”Why Hasn’t Brexit Happened?" Aug. 30, 2014. Psychiatrist and author Sally Satel appears at the 2014 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Speaker Biography: Sally Satel is a psychiatrist and a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. An academic of psychiatry and medicine, she was an assistant professor at Yale University from 1988 to 1993, where she remains a lecturer. Satel is the author of many scholarly articles and books, including "Drug Treatment: The Case for Coercion" and "PC, M.D.: How Political Correctness Is Corrupting Medicine." In "Brainwashed: The Seductive Appeal of Mindless Neuroscience" (Basic Books), she pairs with psychologist Scott O. Lilienfeld to reveal how many of the real-world applications of human neuroscience gloss over its limitations and intricacies, often obscuring the myriad factors in psychology that shape our behavior and identities. Satel and Lilienfeld analyze what brain scans and other neurotechnologies can and cannot tell us about ourselves, and the authors stress the complex nature of our selfhood, free will and personal responsibility. "Brainwashed" was a finalist for the 2013 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science. For transcript, captions, and more information, visit http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=6406

It seems like a week can't go by without a news story about how neuroscience has discovered the neurological basis of love, morality, addiction, you name it. Yet how much explanatory power does neuroscience really have -- and are we putting too much trust in its findings? On this episode of Rationally Speaking, Massimo and Julia explore these questions with psychiatrist Sally Satel and professor of psychology Scott O. Lilienfeld, the authors of "Brainwashed: The Seductive Appeal of Mindless Neuroscience."
