Shortly before dusk on November 3, 1870, just as the ferryboat El Capitan was pulling away from its slip into San Francisco Bay, a woman clad in black emerged from the shadows and strode across the crowded deck. Reaching under her veil, she drew a small pistol and aimed it directly at a well-dressed man sitting quietly with his wife and children. The woman fired a single bullet into his chest. “I did it and I don't deny it,” she said when arrested shortly thereafter. “He ruined both myself and my daughter.” This week's guest is acclaimed author Gary Krist. In his latest book, "Trespassers at the Golden Gate: A True Account of Love, Murder, and Madness in Gilded-Age San Francisco", Krist delves into the gripping true story of attorney A.P. Crittenden and his long-time mistress, Laura Fair. Their seven-year affair came to a tragic and scandalous end with a very public murder and a pair of sensational trials. Gold turned a sleepy Mexican outpost into what we now know as San Francisco. In just a few short years, thousands of migrants from every part of the globe made the treacherous journey to California, seeking not just wealth but a chance to begin anew.  Alexander P. Crittenden was one such pioneer who saw in San Francisco limitless opportunities for reinvention. Ever in debt and with a wife and 14 children to support, A.P. found that the city's laissez faire attitudes suited him just fine—particularly when it came to his relationship with Laura Fair. Laura too had come to San Francisco seeking a clean slate, but A.P. and Laura soon began a years-long adulterous affair, with most San Franciscans happy to turn a blind eye. But as the city began to shed its rough-and-tumble past, and embrace the dictates of Victorian respectability, so too did Laura Fair. When A.P. once again broke his oft-repeated promise to divorce his wife and marry Laura, she decided to take fate into her own hands. Shortly before dusk on November 3, 1870, just as the ferryboat El Capitan was pulling away from its slip into San Francisco Bay, Laura Fair shot A.P. Crittenden point-blank in the chest. “I did it and I don't deny it,” she said when arrested shortly thereafter. “He ruined both myself and my daughter.” Fair's murder trial was covered by every news outlet in the country. One of the first to involve an insanity defense, the trial shone an early spotlight on controversial social issues like the role of women, the sanctity of the family, and the range of acceptable expressions of gender—all topics of burning interest to Americans still searching for moral consensus after the Civil War. Trespassers at the Golden Gate author Gary Krist introduces us to a full cast of characters—including a secretly wealthy Black housekeeper, an enterprising Chinese brothel madam, and a French rabble-rouser who refused to dress in sufficiently “feminine” clothing. Their stories, along with those of familiar figures like Mark Twain and Susan B. Anthony, bring to life San Francisco's Gilded-Age society. Mississippi bourbon and rye? Really? The answer is yes. For this week, a listener (Walker) was kind enough to send us two single barrel selections from the Crittenden Distillery in Kiln, Mississippi. With roots of the distillery dating all the back to 2016, you could imagine our surprise when we saw two 7 year cask strength products (bourbon and rye) that were distilled, aged, and bottled by this up and coming whiskey producer. in the midst of tasting. and reviewing this whiskey, Steven and Kenny got in a argument about friend chicken and much hilarity ensued. So join us this week if you want to laugh and find out about a small distillery in Mississippi that is putting out some great products. Cheers!

Fair for the murder of her lover, A. P. Crittenden, made headlines nationwide. The operatic facts of the case—a woman strung along for years by a two-timing man, killing him in an alleged fit of madness—challenged an American populace still searching for moral consensus after the Civil War. The trial shone an early and uncomfortable spotlight on social issues while jolting the still-adolescent metropolis of 1870s San Francisco, a city eager to shed its rough-and-tumble Gold Rush-era reputation.Today’s guest is Gary Krist, author of “Trespassers at the Golden Gate: A True Account of Love, Murder, and Madness in Gilded-Age San Francisco.” The story is an exploration of a nation still scarred by war and for a city eager for the world stage.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eric Crittenden is here to share the investing strategies for all weather! No matter what the situation is, you should be prepared to invest your money wisely. Eric shares insights on blending equities, bonds, and systematic global macro strategies like trend-following to navigate volatile markets, emphasizing the importance of managing downside risk and incorporating uncorrelated assets. We also reflect on macroeconomic trends, and compare today's inflationary pressures to the 1970s, expressing skepticism about inflation being fully contained and stressing the value of systematic investing over reliance on media narratives or short-term predictions. Today we discuss... Eric Crittenden, CIO at Standpoint Asset Management, specializes in "all-weather investing," combining hedge fund styles and traditional assets for stable returns in all market conditions. Eric's career began after transitioning from meteorology and public health studies to finance, spurred by a fascination with dynamic systems and risk management. He highlights the importance of managing downside risk and diversification, especially during challenging periods like the stagflation of the 1970s. Crittenden cautions against high-fee hedge fund structures, advocating for in-house, low-cost implementation of trend-following strategies. Gold, short-term fixed income, and systematic macro strategies are recommended for navigating inflationary and stagflationary periods. Rather than relying on narratives, Crittenden employs a systematic, data-focused method to identify global trends using daily updates from international futures exchanges. Current economic conditions are compared to historical eras like the 1970s, the Great Depression, and early 2000s, predicting major challenges in the next 10–15 years. Inflation could resurface due to supply chain disruptions, reindustrialization, or unexpected events rather than monetary policy alone. Decoupling from China and reindustrialization in North America are significant but costly, long-term efforts requiring high capital expenditure. Predicting economic shifts remains challenging as market shocks often come from unforeseen factors. Reindustrialization and reshoring initiatives face efficiency and scale challenges, particularly when transitioning manufacturing from China to smaller nations like Mexico or Vietnam. The U.S. benefits from unparalleled geographic advantages, which foster economic resilience and attract global talent. Technological shifts like AI and crypto are reminiscent of the early internet, with a mix of revolutionary potential and speculative overreach. Governments may challenge crypto through taxation or legal constraints, highlighting the importance of considering geopolitical risks in such investments. Long-term capital stewardship prioritizes sustainable growth, stability, and client trust over speculative gains or first-mover risks. One of the standout points from Eric's approach is the focus on constructing a durable, all-weather portfolio. Eric designed his fund with the idea that it should be able to endure the most uncertain future scenarios, a goal he finds essential for long-term wealth preservation. His strategy blends managed futures, global equities, and laddered treasury bills, with a focus on equal risk contribution across futures & equities. Eric emphasizes simplicity and robustness over complexity, believing that this provides the best opportunity for consistent performance in both good times and bad. For Eric, effective trading is a blend of art and science—knowing when to trust the data and when to recognize that the future will always hold surprises. It was extremely interesting to hear Eric's wisdom that “direct attempts to create a smoother equity curve usually cause more harm than good. They create more problems than they solve”, adding that it is akin to asking for “more infrequent iceberg risk” in order to avoid “frequent, survivable, nuisance risk”. The solution being to build something that is robust and durable on a stand-alone basis, then something else, and then something else. Their whiskey, "Cut Above," has been distilled for over nine years, named after the family's ranch, and inspired by the area's history as the moonshine capital of the Gulf Coast. The episode kicks off with their Bottled in Bond Wheated Bourbon, a 100-proof bourbon with a distinct peppercorn spice, designed for the refined palate. They follow it with their Single Barrel Family Reserve, a six-year-old rye bourbon at 122.5 proof, boasting flavors of caramel, dried figs, and Girl Scout Samoas cookies, offering a rich, long finish. Next up is a five-year-old rye whiskey, finished with black cherry staves, coming in at 122.5 proof. This whiskey delivers a spicy, orange zest flavor that balances its heat. The show wraps up with the BO-RY-RU, a blend of bourbon and rye whiskeys finished in a rum cask. Named after the Rougarou, the Cajun werewolf of Louisiana folklore, it features salty caramel, sweet tea, and chocolate notes that evoke a wild, roaring experience. The episode dives into Mississippi's deep distilling heritage, with Crittenden's "Cut Above" showcasing the craftsmanship of Gulf Coast whiskey. Today, we've got a special edition of the podcast, featuring a roundtable discussion with three diversely talented musicians and music educators, who also happen to be movers and shakers in the Buffalo and Western New York music scene.  Damone Jackson, Eric Crittenden and David Cloyd are three very different people with varied musical outlooks and a broad spectrum of life experiences. But all three are bound by their deep belief that music elevates all of us, musicians and listeners alike.  Recently, Crittenden and Cloyd - who are co-founders of the Buffalo Music Club music education collective - teamed with the Sportsmen's Americana Music Foundation and the Borderland Festival to create the Borderland Band Camp. The Camp offered an opportunity for young musicians in the area to create a set of music to be performed as part of this year's Borderland Festival, which takes place September 13 - 15 at Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora. Jackson is one of 7 professional instructors who took part in the camp.  Our conversation ran the gamut, from raw comedic asides, to deep and intensely personal reflections on what it means to be a musician, and why music matters more and more, the deeper you dig into it.  Thanks for listening, and we hope to see you at the Borderland Festival!

Eric's all-weather investment approach, which combines global equities, bonds and a systematic global macro program investing in various uncorrelated markets. He discusses the importance of diversification beyond traditional stock and bond portfolios, his views on homeownership, wealth transfer to children, and the value of focusing on health and sleep. Rollo Crittenden is general manager, winemaker and vineyard manager of Crittenden Wines in Victoria's Mornington Peninsula region. Mornington Peninsula is synonymous with premium quality pinot noir and chardonnay, and Crittenden certainly excels at making wine from those varieties. But when it comes to differentiating the winery from its peers, Rollo has an ace up his sleeve. Since 2011, Crittenden has been making a rare Australian example of the white wines made from savagnin grapes that are unique to the Jura region of France. Known as ‘vin jaune' wines in Jura, they're aged for years in barrel under a layer of flor yeast, similar to how fino sherry wines are made in Spain. And the results are quite extraordinary, as I experienced myself late last year when Rollo presented a retrospective comprising six vintages of Crittenden's Cri De Couer savagnin wines. Coming up, you'll hear how this project has evolved from an accident into one of the most celebrated wines on the contemporary Australian scene. NB: This interview was recorded following the event late in 2023, right before I took an extended break from the podcast. Keep that in mind when we reference the upcoming pipeline of releases during this interview.
