At WMoF2018, Bosco and Dr Lynette McShane were panelists at the discussion on the Dignity and Beauty of Sexual Love: Finding New Language for Ancient Truths. On this weeks programme we have their rather catchy presentation called "Catching the right bus". They are retreat co-ordinators and founders of the Siolta Catholic retreat team. They have 6 young children. Over the past 15 years, they have delivered Catholic retreat programmes in schools and parishes with the aim of leading young people to God through the Sacraments. Bosco and Lynette met through missionary work in Calcutta, founding the charity “Another Pair of Hands”. Following the completion of her PhD in Philosophy, Lynette held the post of Senior Research Officer and then Head of Research at the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health for 6 years, researching suicide in N.I and reviewing the needs of those in services. A former ladies Gaelic football All-Star for Tyrone, Lynette continues to write in the field of sport and mental health, delivering lectures and workshops across Universities, schools and clubs. Bosco also works professionally as a DJ.

The SS102fm team were so impressed with the input of the keynote speakers and workshops given during the Pastoral Congress of the World Meeting of Families this year. We are also conscious that many people would have been unable to attend these talks in person, so periodically over the next few months we will be sharing some of the audio with our listeners and our blog followers. On the second day of the Pastoral Congress, Wednesday, August 22nd 2018, Cardinal Tagle, the Archbishop of Manila, gave a workshop entitled 'Choose life: Pope Francis on the ‘throw-away’ culture.' Cardinal Tagle brings together two major writings of Pope Francis: Laudato 'Si (on the care for our common home) and Amoris Laetitia (on love in the family).

On this weeks programme SS102fm can't really compete with the Main Event in Ireland this weekend but we are conscious of all our listeners and readers! So we have our usual visit to the saints of the week, a short reflection on this weeks Sunday gospel. Given the weekend that was in it, we also had a WMoF2018 link. As part of the preparation for the World Meeting of Families 2018 and the visit of Pope Francis to Ireland, a 6-part television series has been commissioned by the World Meeting of Families to help explore the document written by Pope Francis on love in the family. ‘A Journey through Amoris Laetitia’ features a wide variety of well-known commentators, as well as families from all walks of life and from all over the world. Contributors include President of Caritas Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, speaker and author Jeff Cavins, Bishop Robert Barron, John and Clare Gabrowski (Pontifical Council for the Family) and Primate of all Ireland Archbishop Eamon Martin. Through the six episodes, presented by Wendy Grace, we reflect on what Amoris Laetitia has to say to families as they experience the ups and downs of family life and how Pope Francis addresses key themes like imperfection, mercy and wider society while also offering an uplifting vision for the family.

Fr Eamonn Fitzgibbon joined the SS102fm team on this weeks programme to introduce the Irish Institute for Pastoral Studies MIC to WL102fm listeners and also to promote an upcoming exciting conference to be held at IIPS in August immediately after the WMoF2018 in Dublin. The conference has as its theme "The Future of the Irish parish: Lessons from around the world" which brings together sharings from all corners of the globe about the changing nature and meaning of parish life both within the church but also as an external manifestation of identity. Parish life in Ireland both urban and rural has been under going massive change over the last number of years but is still a key part of Irish self identity and understanding. It is not for nothing that often the first question an Irish person asks another is not who are you but rather where are you from? With the forth coming massive decline in the number of priests in active ministry the challenge has been for the Irish church to get to grips with how we understand and celebrate parishes as vibrant, living expressions of lived communities of faith with a model which is no longer so centred on the role and identity of the parish priest. The aim of the conference is to look to examples of this from around the world and to remind ourselves of the words of Pope Francis that "the parish is not an out-dated institution">i> (E.G.28, Pope Francis).

Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) is a post-Synodal apostolic exhortation by Pope Francis on love in the family. It was signed on 19 March 2016 on the Solemnity of St. Joseph, and brings together the results of the two Synods on the family convoked by Pope Francis in 2014 and 2015. It frequently cites their final Reports, documents and teachings of his predecessors, and his own numerous catecheses on the family, as well as contributions of various Episcopal Conferences around the world. Amoris Laetitia is the document under penning the preparations for WMOF2018 and in parishes across the diocese and country since last year groups have been gathering to read and explore this document from Pope Francis. On this weeks programme we continue with a clip from the second video which was used to facilitate to discussions across six sessions. In each session of this six–session parish conversation, the participants are be invited to take part in a process which is designed to be interactive and participative. They are helped to reflect on and articulate their experience of family life and their response to Pope Francis’ reflections in The Joy of Love. The programme takes, as its starting point, people’s experience of love and their hopes and fears with regard to marriage and family.

How Christmas puts in front of us the need to say yes to life

On our 2017 Christmas Day programme, Mary Keating joined with the team on SS102fm and gave us a very simple but profound reflection on the choices for life which people make in their lives. 2018 is going to be a year where Ireland very much has to reflect on family and life with two particular foci as we head into the World Meeting of Families in 2018 and the political maelstrom to repeal the 8th Amendment to the Irish Constitution The question we face in 2018 will be are we an economy or a society? How do we value the most vulnerable members of our communities? Do we hold a consistent ethic of life from conception to natural death or do we discard those who are deemed to be non-productive for society? Will we uphold the seamless garment of life? The seamless garment of life is a metaphor for the reality that all of us share one life in God. It is not a tenet but an understanding that all of life is sacred, from womb to tomb, in the unborn and the dying, in the murderer on death row and the mother in a coma, in the soldier in Afghanistan and the family in Iraq, in the undernourished child and the pensioner who can't afford a doctor. "When human life is considered 'cheap' or easily expendable in one area," Cardinal Joseph Bernardin said, "eventually nothing is held as sacred and all lives are in jeopardy."
