'Tis the season of St Patrick and so Naomi Smith is joined by Irish politics specialist Professor Mary C Murphy, to see whether Ireland's political glass is half empty or half full. Questions are there many... Ireland is one of three neutral EU countries but is that sustainable in the age of Trump and Putin? How do young people on the island differ politically from their parents? Could there be a border poll and why would it be fraught with risk? And should the Taoiseach be raising a glass to his St Patrick's Day visit to the White House, or drowning his sorrows? Ireland's SMEs Facing Digital Readiness Challenges

.ie has launched Ireland's Digital Readiness Monitor, which analyses the level of digital sophistication of websites in Ireland and has revealed that 36% of websites have a low or very low level of sophistication. Ireland's Digital Readiness Monitor, which includes websites using the .ie domain, as well as those using .com, .co.uk or any other extension, presents a comprehensive picture of Ireland's digital readiness with research conducted by .ie in partnership with the Irish Institute of Digital Business, DCU and the JE Cairnes School of Business and Economics at the University of Galway. The Digital Readiness Monitor introduces a new national measure of digital readiness - the Web Technology Intensity Score (WTIS). The WTIS is comprised of eleven indicators that measure the digital readiness of organisations in Ireland, including basic websites, websites with sophisticated functionality, websites with evidence of basic analytics, sophisticated analytics, social media integration, mobile optimisation, online advertising, sophisticated online advertising, internationalisation, selling online and cloud computing. The Government's digital strategy, Harnessing Digital: The Digital Ireland Framework, aims to position Ireland as a European and global digital leader. SMEs make up the majority of Irish businesses and the ability of Irish SMEs to adopt sophisticated digital technologies will be fundamental to increasing Ireland's digital competitiveness. The report reveals that 36% of websites in Ireland have a low or very low level of sophistication despite various Government grants and programmes to support digital advancement. A website and associated technologies are a proxy for an organisation's degree of digitalisation, so this statistic demonstrates that SMEs' websites are underdeveloped. At the other end of the spectrum, one in four websites (27%) have a high or very high level of sophistication, showing there is considerable room for improvement. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke said, "Ireland has outlined its ambition to be a digital leader, reflecting the key role that digital technology does and will continue to play in shaping our competitiveness and driving productivity. The findings of this report demonstrates that we must continue to drive the digital agenda, ensuring digitalisation and technology remains a priority across all facets of Irish enterprise. My department has implemented a number of grants to support SMEs on their digital transformation - the Digital Transition Fund, which will continue to be rolled out to 2026, is particularly supportive of SMEs while the Grow Digital portal is up and running to help businesses assess their digital needs. Together with my colleagues in Government, we remain committed to supporting enterprise in Ireland." Speaking on the report findings, David Curtin, Chief Executive at .ie, said, "The development of the WTIS measure marks a significant step forward in understanding the levels of sophistication of websites in Ireland. Despite the many Government supports in place, it is dispiriting to see that 36% of websites in Ireland have a low or very low Web Technology Intensity Score. For Irish SMEs, digital technologies present the potential of the 'death of distance', overcoming the limitations of location for Irish rural and urban businesses. However, there is evidence of a digital divide based on location, sector and size. In order to drive increased adoption of digital technologies by all businesses, but specifically micro SMEs with less than ten employees, a supportive digital ecosystem optimised for SMEs is going to be required, and we need the financial support of the Government and key stakeholders to help make that happen." The UK General Election results across Great Britain have been pored over by almost every media outlet on this island. However, there has been an air of the inevitable that the results for Northern Ireland have been largely ignored despite its recent cohorts of MPs having played a crucial role in the twists and turns of the UK's seperation from the European Union since 2016. Due to the enormous majority of the new UK Labour Parliamentary Group, the 18 seats from the 'nation' / 'province' / 'region' (delete as preferred) of the UK across the water, were never likely to be pivotal for the government of Britain. But for the people, parties, and governeance of Northern Ireland, these small number of individuals could be very influential. Claims Lack Of Guidance Counsellors In Clare Severely Hindering Student Wellbeing

It's claimed the lack of school guidance counsellors in Clare is severely hindering the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents. The Irish Institute of Guidance Counsellors has issued their pre-budget submission calling for the government to employ a suite of measures aimed at tackling a national crisis. Among the key components of the IGCs pre budget submission are calls for an urgent review of the national supply of guidance counsellors and a ringfenced allocation of hours for each and every pupil. Prior to the abolishment of the ex-quota system, secondary schools were guaranteed a minimum of 22 hours of guidance counsellor support each week. Under the current arrangements, the hours are now distributed at the discretion of the principal. However, a survey carried out this year by IGC found that just 4% of members had the full 22 hours available to them to carry out essential duties such as career advice and one on one clinics. Inagh, Green Party Senator, Roisín Garvey says Guidance Counsellors are at the frontline of a mental health crisis and need to be available to engage with students. A Clare Guidance Counsellor believes a dedicated point of contact is required for all schools in the event of crisis management. There is just one counsellor for every 453 secondary school students nationwide, while over 10% of those qualified in the profession are currently out of practice. Last year meanwhile, Clare's Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service dealt with 412 referrals. Guidance Counsellor at Kilrush Community School, Aisling Haugh says teaching commitments can often clash with the duties of a counsellor and that structures need to be introduced to ensure young people are never left behind in their moment of need.

Episode 42- Graham Parkes: How to Think About the Climate Crisis

The Mindful Cranks

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2023 86:34

Is the climate crisis a reflection of our lack of understanding of our true nature as human beings in the cosmos? Could our inability to ask such difficult questions be at the root of our collective impotence to reduce carbon emissions and usher in the magnitude of cultural change necessary in order to avoid impending and irreversible tipping points?    Graham Parkes, thinks so. In fact, Graham Parkes' new book, HOW TO THINK ABOUT THE CLIMATE CRISIS: A Philosophical Guide to Saner Ways of Living (Bloomsbury Academic, 2021)  is exactly that - about how to think differently about the climate crisis – by learning from the great ancient wisdom traditions – particularly Chinese philosophies such as Confucianism and Taoism. Contrary to contemporary positive psychologists and happiness industry gurus,  so-called "human flourishing" is not individualistic in these ancient Chinese philosophical traditions, but rather, thriving is relational in and as a society - in a harmonious relationship with the natural world. But as Graham discusses in his book and in our interview – our thinking in the West has been obstructed and taken over by very powerful libertarian ideologies and warped Far Right theologies with the backing of many billionaires and corporate special interests – particularly the fossil fuel industry. Graham painstakingly covers a lot of ground in his book – it's a detailed, well researched and very sober analysis not only of the reality of global heating, but also of the social and political forces obstructing us, resulting in the predicament and political impasse we find ourselves in today. Even in the hour and a half that we spoke, we still only scratched the surface of the many issues and ideas in his book, so I really do hope you get a chance to read his book. A native of Glasgow, Graham Parkes has taught philosophy at universities in the United States, Europe, and East Asia, and is now Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Vienna. He has published widely in the fields of European, Chinese, and Japanese thought, with a long-standing emphasis on environmental philosophy. Great Britain has severed ties with the Economic Union in Europe – known as Brexit – whose impact is washing ashore on the island of Ireland and Northern Ireland, threatening to undermine economic gains that blossomed from the peace, said Colm O’Comartun, former director of the Irish Institute at Boston College. “It exposed in many ways... how little the British government thinks about Northern Ireland,” O’Comartun told the Retail Politics Podcast with Gerry Shields. “They entered into the Brexit process without acknowledging or understanding constitutional and international agreements.” O’Comartun, who attained an undergraduate and graduate degree in political science from University College Dublin, also reflects on Irish history and the best movies to watch for St. Patrick’s Day. # # #Listen to the Retail Politics Podcast with Gerry Shields can be heard at: retailpoliticspodcast.com and on Apple and Spotify.

Katharine Slattery and Aoife O’Brien speak about mentoring: the difference between mentoring and coaching; the benefits of mentoring specifically; what makes an effective mentoring programme. We also talk about the preparation needed for both the mentor and the mentee when it comes to designing and delivering an effective mentoring programme. Katharine Slattery established Mentoring Resources in 2012, to design and deliver in-person and eLearning training programmes for mentors and mentees participating in mentoring programmes in professional, educational and community settings in Ireland. Katharine believes in the power of mentoring in providing an additional level of support for those going through a time of transition and challenge - whether that is starting off in a new level of education, beginning a new role, or striving for professional or personal development. Mentoring Resources also design, implement and manage mentoring programmes for small and large-scale organisations in Ireland. Katharine has worked with several Irish Higher Education Institutions, corporate sector and community sector clients, and other organisations such as the HSE, HIQA and the Law Society of Ireland, and has seen first-hand the benefits to mentees, mentors and the organisation in which mentoring is embedded. Katharine is a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and the Women’s Inspire Network. Katharine holds a B.A. and M.A. in English Literature from the Queen’s University of Belfast, as well as a Professional Practice Certificate in Training Development & Delivery from the Irish Institute of Training and Development. She has just begun a post-graduate Diploma in Business in Executive Management. A mentor provides three Ss – a safe pair of ears, a sounding board, and a source of possible solutions. Amid the noise and competing demands of a workplace environment, it’s not hard to see how the opportunity to have those ears, that sounding board and that source of help could make you ‘Happier At Work’. Overview Social movements tend to follow predictable phases in their development. In a paper I co-authored with Dr. Danielle Jahn called “Tracking a Movement: U.S. Milestones in Suicide Prevention” we discussed four stages of development that seem track the emergence and decline of a wildfire: Stage 1: A Spark is Lit — at this stage individuals are triggered by a shared belief that something isn’t right. People start to come together in small groups over water-coolers and in coffee shops and become agitated together. Stage 2: Combustion and Local Coalescence — at this stage many small local pockets begin to enrolls new voices and create local strategy, and momentum builds. Stage 3: Fully Developed and Consuming Energy — here we have bureaucratization with broader levels of standards and coordination and enrollment of universal systems like media, education, healthcare, faith communities, politics and workplace. Stage 4: Decay and Decline — momentum dies out. The latest episode of Insights, the CUBS UCC podcast, is focusing on the topic of leadership and the importance of respect for relationships in work.  More recent ideas about leadership emphasise the importance of relationships as central to leadership effects. This suggests that the impact of leadership arises from the nature and characteristics of specific relationships that leaders and followers share. Professor Nicholas Clarke from EADA Business School, Barcelona was speaking recently at the Human Resource Research Centre (HRRC) In partnership with the Irish Institute for Training & Development about this topic. In this lecture Nicholas draws upon research over the past 10 years to argue that respect lays at the core of leadership and is critical for achieving positive outcomes in organisations beyond simply better employee performance. Nicholas will examine how the concept of mutuality has received minimal attention in research both within the field of leadership as well as HRM more broadly, yet is a critical aspect of the leadership relationship and the place of respect within it. The lectures brings together key findings from Nicholas’ own research over the past 5 years in this area to highlight why mutuality in respect matters and how it comes about in leadership relationships. The lecture concludes by exploring its potential implications for enabling organisations to become more sustainable and socially responsive to meet the challenges of today’s business environment.      For more insights and information into how CUBS lecturers, researchers and graduates are making an impact in the wider world, go to www.cubsucc.com (https://www.cubsucc.com/) . Fr Eamonn Fitzgibbon joined the SS102fm team on this weeks programme to introduce the Irish Institute for Pastoral Studies MIC to WL102fm listeners and also to promote an upcoming exciting conference to be held at IIPS in August immediately after the WMoF2018 in Dublin. The conference has as its theme "The Future of the Irish parish: Lessons from around the world" which brings together sharings from all corners of the globe about the changing nature and meaning of parish life both within the church but also as an external manifestation of identity. Parish life in Ireland both urban and rural has been under going massive change over the last number of years but is still a key part of Irish self identity and understanding. It is not for nothing that often the first question an Irish person asks another is not who are you but rather where are you from? With the forth coming massive decline in the number of priests in active ministry the challenge has been for the Irish church to get to grips with how we understand and celebrate parishes as vibrant, living expressions of lived communities of faith with a model which is no longer so centred on the role and identity of the parish priest. The aim of the conference is to look to examples of this from around the world and to remind ourselves of the words of Pope Francis that "the parish is not an out-dated institution">i> (E.G.28, Pope Francis).

Vidal receives today April Danann, a medical intuitive, who is in her essence a person deeply committed to fully understanding her body, mind, and soul on the deepest levels. Guided solely by her intuition, she has learned to place all her trust, faith, hope, and belief into her body. She believes that her spiritual journey will take her where she is destined to go. With absolute certainty, she knows her body can heal itself without drugs. Perhaps this is all you need to know about April, however, here are some details about her career: Education - Dip PT — Packaging Technology.  College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise, Cookstown.   - Dip MI — Medical Intuition. Inner Access, Canada - Dip NT — Nutritional Therapy.  Irish Institute of Nutrition & Health.  - BSc (Hons) — Food Management & Marketing.  College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise, Cookstown. - MSc — Nutrition & Exercise Science.  University of Chester, UK - Ph.D. (ongoing) — Naturopathic Medicine, University of Natural Medicine, California, USA Other Courses - Diploma — Kinesiology - Diploma — Massage Therapy - Diploma — Family Herbalist Speaker Events - 2017 — Wellness Day, Ballymaloe - Happy Pear, Greystones Other Roles - 2014 - current — Secretary of Skibbereen Farmers Market board - 2007 — Founder member of NTOI (Nutritional Therapists of Ireland)   April Danann — A Short History April Danann left Canada for Europe in 1997, following a job offer in Amsterdam to start up the European branch of a Canadian company and then ended up staying, realizing her heart belonged here amongst the blow-ins and the original food culture that has become her life. She'd always longed to live in Europe. Even though she was born and raised on Canada's East coast and loved the fresh air, the wildness and sometimes the snow, she thinks it prepared her for West Cork and the rainy days of Ireland. April has worked as a Medical Intuitive since as long as she can remember. Her interest in food and nutrition were natural companions to her ability to hear the body's voice. Although she left the corporate world when her son was born to work on her own terms, in her own way; it prepared her for all that was to come. Starting something, anything, from scratch is something that comes easily, quite like her West Cork kombucha scobies and apple cider vinegar mothers. Capturing wild organisms and growing a business; life just gets better. Certainly, a great episode filled with useful information for you to get healthier one choice at the time, connecting with nature and becoming aware of the messages your body is giving you. Today the lead strength and conditioning coach at the Irish Institute of Sport, Dr. Eamonnn Flanagan joins us to discuss a different way to look at sprinting scores with athletes. We start out where the idea came from and how it can change how you look at how your athlete’s sprint times impact training and even evaluate the tests you use with your athletes. We next discuss how using Z-scores in different exercises could lead to cross examining tests to find where they rank versus the most successful athlete’s in that sport and position. This is obviously the early stage of evaluating this, but Dr. Flanagan sees great potential for this. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/ketokitchen Ketogenic pizza. Ketogenic toast. Ketogenic cornflakes. Yep, each of these, and many of carbalicious food items actually do exist in low-carb, high-fat nutrient dense recipes. You just have to know what to do, and you have to be willing to think outside the box of how most ketogenic eaters operate: which is basically drinking copious amounts of full-fat coconut milk, buying avocados by the dozen and going through a stick of butter every couple days. Cancer survivors Domini Kemp and Patricia Daly just put the finishing touches on the first-ever comprehensive ketogenic cookbook - a cookbook based on the latest research on nutritional approaches to the prevention and management of cancer and a ketogenic diet. But this book is chock full of delicious recipes and practical ketogenic tips that go way above and beyond just cancer management. For decades, the ketogenic diet―which shifts the body’s metabolism from burning glucose to burning fat, lowering blood sugar and insulin and resulting in a metabolic state known as ketosis―has been used to successfully manage pediatric epilepsy. More recently, it has been used by the Paleo community as a weight loss strategy. Now emerging research suggests that a ketogenic diet, in conjunction with conventional treatments, also offers new hope for those coping with cancer and other serious disease. With endorsements from leading researchers and oncologists such as Dr. Thomas Seyfried (), The Ketogenic Kitchen offers more than 250 recipes, as well as meal plans and comprehensive scientific information about the benefits of a ketogenic diet, with sensible advice to help readers through periods of illness, recovery, and treatment. Domini Kemp is an award winning chef, food writer, and entrepreneur. In 2013, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and since then she has shifted her focus towards healthier eating. She changed her column in the Irish Times to focus on healthier recipes and opened Alchemy Juice Co., a juice and wholefoods cafe. The Ketogenic Kitchen is her fifth cookbook. Patricia Daly is an experienced nutritional therapist and author specializing in cancer care and the ketogenic diet in particular. She has worked with hundreds of cancer patients in Ireland and abroad, lectures at the Irish Institute of Nutrition and Health, and is a well-regarded speaker at conferences and in cancer centers. After writing three eBooks, including "", The Ketogenic Kitchen is her first print book. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The difference between Patricia's more "strict" diet and Domini's more "liberal" diet...[8:20] -About how many carbs should you eat to be low carb versus ketosis...[11:20 & 18:55] -The surprising dangers of excessive calorie consumption on a ketogenic diet...[23:10] -The potential dangers of whey protein, especially for certain populations...[28:20] -Why it is that both Patricia and Domini like something called Yacon syrup...[31:00] -How to make your own ketogenic bread to have low carb toast...[34:05] -How to make keto cornflakes or keto cereal...[45:25] -Patrick and Domini's favorite way to make pizza that still allows it to be ketogenic (and how the heck they do the crust)...[46:55] -How to make a simple and tasty low-carb version of the Japanese temaki recipe...[51:30] -How to make "Bullet-proofish" coffee that doesn't result in any bloating or nausea...[55:15] -And much more!
