All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Colossians 3:17) On Thursday we celebrate the Feast of Thanksgiving. Let us consider all of the things we have to thank God for. Let us begin today to count our blessings, and we have all been blessed so much. In fact, we have much more to thank God for this year, than we did a year ago.

In our new environment series with Dorothee Babeck, we will be looking at the background to the koala politics in NSW today. Dorothee Babeck has been very actively involved in environmental protection for several years. In the future we will discuss topics such as coal mining, climate change and the Tarkine Forest. - On Thursday (19.11.) the much disputed revised bill "for the protection of koalas" was rejected in the NSW Senate by the vote of Senator Catherine Cusack (Liberals), as she voted with the opposition. This then led to her immediate dismissal by Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian, who declared that a policy to protect koalas and farmers' interests should be developed in the new year. You can find out what this draft law means in this interview with Dorothee Babeck.

Running for 48 hours from 0000UTC on the 28th to 2359UTC on the 29th on the 1.8 to 28MHz contest bands, the exchange is signal report and your CQ Zone. For the UK that is Zone 14. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO on Friday the 20th of November. Last week was not bad for HF propagation, but probably not as good as the previous period. The solar flux index remained in the mid-to-high 70s, but the upside was that we had quiet geomagnetic conditions, which helped settle the ionosphere. The result was that maximum usable frequencies over 3,000km remained quite high, with 12 metres often being open. There was even the occasional long-distance opening on 10 metres, including SSB contacts with Australia, especially by better-equipped stations. Next week may be better as sunspot group 2783 rotates into an Earth-facing position. NOAA predicts the SFI will remain in the range 70-75, but this could easily be exceeded if sunspot 2783 becomes more active. Unfortunately, geomagnetic conditions may not be as favourable next week due to a large coronal hole on the Sun’s surface. NOAA predicts the Kp index could rise to four on Sunday the 22nd of November and again on the 24th and 25th. Things could then settle down with a maximum Kp index of two, just in time for the CQ Worldwide CW contest on the weekend of the 28th and 29th. So it looks like the latter half of the week will be better for HF propagation than the first half. And now the VHF and up propagation news. This is often regarded as an unsettled time of year, but can occasionally bring quite settled weather, typical of high-pressure systems. Unfortunately, there is once again no real sign of any substantial high pressure, other than the occasional brief ridge between successive lows and their fronts. Like last week, any high pressure is likely to be closer to southern Britain and over the Continent, therefore favouring southern England to France and Biscay for the more optimistic operators. It's another week to look for GHz Bands rain scatter, with much variability expected in timing. It's best to follow events via the daily forecasts to find the most likely opportunities. There have been a few out-of-season Sporadic-E events on 10m and 6m in the past week, so it's never safe to assume there is only a summer season for Sporadic-E. Admittedly it's not usually a great response in November, but it can and does happen! Just one minor meteor shower this coming week. The November Orionids peaks on the 28th, with a zenithal hourly rate of just three. Moon declination goes positive again on Wednesday, so visibility windows will lengthen all week. With the Moon approaching apogee on Friday, path losses are at their highest. 144MHz sky noise is low all week, but rising above 300 Kelvin from Thursday. And that’s all from the propagation team this week.

On Thursday, the benchmark Sensex closed at 43,600, down 580 points or 1.31 per cent, the sharpest fall since October 26 while Nifty50 fell 167 points, or 1.3 per cent, to end at 12,772 amid renewed fears of lockdowns.   In the overnight trade, US stocks ended in positive territory as fresh stimulus hopes buoyed investor sentiment toward the end of a session fraught with worries over mounting shutdowns and layoffs linked to spiraling Covid-19 infection rates.   However, global stocks came under pressure on Friday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin called for an end to pandemic relief for struggling businesses, sparking a rare clash between the central bank and Treasury and weighing on sentiment.   Back home, shares of telecom stocks may remain in focus today as the merger of Bharti Infratel and Indus Towers to create a mega tower company has been completed, and Vodafone Idea has received Rs 3,760.1 crore cash for its 11.15 per cent holding in Indus.   Further, Reliance Industries on Thursday said it has completed the sale of about 10 per cent stake in its retail unit to a clutch of foreign investors for Rs 47,265 crore.   That apart, shares of Gland Pharma will list on bourses today. The retail and HNI portions of its IPO were subscribed just 51 per cent and 24 per cent and the Rs 6,480-crore IPO managed to sail through solely on the back of institutional investor demand.   In a separate development, market regulator Sebi has filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking it to direct embattled Sahara conglomerate chief Subrata Roy and two of his companies to deposit Rs 62,600 crore ($8.4 billion) that it said was due to its investors.

The Lanes and Bow-ways of Ennis is the work of Larry Brennan who has been devoted to researching the subject since 2014. Growing up in Ennis, one takes it for granted about the number of lanes in the town but do we all know the correct names? Today many towns’ people call the lanes by their adopted names such as Quinn’s Lane, Enzo’s Lane, Supermac’s Lane but it’s always a source of debate and discussion. The laneways contain an architectural heritage with a unique collection of vernacular building types, styles and diversity of uses from all periods of our history along with notable personalities who are associated with the history of Ennis. Larry has attempted to rekindle the names of some long-forgotten lanes, bow-ways and alleys and review the laneways that have been privatised, closed off, neglected or simply disappeared. He provides an insight into an Ennis long forgotten, the people, and how they lived here. On Thursday's Morning Focus, Gavin Grace spoke to Larry ahead of the launch on Friday.

In John 18:38 we read Pontius Pilate's famous question to Jesus: What is truth? He may have been genuinely uncertain or confused, or perhaps he was simply mocking Jesus. At any rate, countless people in today's world regularly ask the question, "What is sin?" Not necessarily by their words, but more by their actions. So many people in our nation, around the world, and, sadly, even in the Church don't really know what is sin, and what is not sin. This is due in large measure to bad catechesis over the last several decades. Active cases of COVID-19 passed the 40,000 mark in Minnesota on Friday. On Thursday, the state recorded 7,228 cases in a single day. That number is staggering on its own, but it’s especially concerning given that two weeks earlier the daily case number had never passed 3,000. Cases are rising in nearly every part of the state, and health experts are concerned that pattern will continue as social gatherings, even small ones, continue to happen. MPR News host Kerri Miller checked in with Jan Malcolm and Kris Ehresmann from the Minnesota Department of Health about how the state is handling the recent surge in cases and how the state is preparing for the upcoming holiday season.   Guests: Jan Malcolm is the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health. Nov 16, 2020: One Million Cases in a Week

AM Quickie

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2020 6:46

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: The United States recorded over a million coronavirus cases in a single week. A vaccine may be right on the horizon, but we’re in for a brutal winter without leadership and federal funding. Meanwhile, Trump slips up and half-admits that Joe Biden won the election, but refuses to concede, as his supporters throw a pitiful, violent rally on the streets of Washington D.C. And lastly, Mitch McConnell continues his life-long quest to pack the judiciary with hard-right judges, and is still grinding nominations through the Senate nearly every day, while Senate Democrats still look for “compromise.” THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: The United States passed a grim new milestone this week: one million cases in seven days. One week ago there were 10 million confirmed cases, now there are 11. The dramatic, horrific spike comes at the worst possible time, as national leadership continues to squabble over the results of the 2020 election. And like most crises, the effects of the current spike are being felt worst by working class Americans and people of color. The New York Times reports that CDC numbers show Latino, Native, and Black Americans being hospitalized around four times as often as white people. The only positive is that the death rate appears to be lower than the spring and summer’s deadly peaks, although it is rising fast in many states. The data does indicate that the virus is seasonal, meaning the long, cold, wet winter months are going to be particularly brutal. Once we’re out the other side, there is some hope, though: experts predict a vaccine could be ready for emergency use as early as next month. But the problem then becomes distribution, and the Times reports that hurting states and cities don’t have the resources to make it happen. This is a problem that good leadership could untangle, but the Trump administration doesn’t appear to be in any way willing to help. Trump has blocked his coronavirus team from working with Biden’s task force, which could make the transition of power in January even more chaotic. The burden of levying new restrictions on social distancing and businesses is now going to fall onto local and state leaders, which means how you fare this winter has a lot to do with where you live and who’s in charge. Take care as best you can. Trump Admits Biden Won, Sorta Meanwhile, in the big baby house on the Washington Mall, President Trump almost slipped up and acknowledged that Joe Biden beat him in the presidential election earlier this month. IN a tweet on Sunday morning, Trump said quote “He won because the election was Rigged.” endquote. Half that sentence is true, at least! The rest of the tweet was more conspiratorial lies of course. But it’s at least a small sign that Trump has entered the fully grasping at straws phase of his denial. There’s still little chance he’ll actually concede, but as his idiotic lawsuits over supposed fraudulent voting aren’t making much headway, the new plan is to contend that the whole thing was rigged from the start. We’ll see how that plan plays out in court. Seeing as Trump’s legal challenges are being led by Rudy Giuliani, we aren’t too worried. On Friday, for instance, nine of Trump’s lawsuits were denied or dropped by courts, and this week promises to be more of the same. The more troubling situation is what the president’s supporters are doing. Over the weekend, right-wing militias including the Proud Boys congregated in Washington D.C. for a quote “One Million MAGA March.” After clashing with leftist-counter protesters, at least one person was stabbed and 20 were arrested. A freelance reporter was also injured in one of the clashes, and video shows right-wing militia members chasing down anti-fascists in the streets, often instigating fights. Trump has animated a section of the far right in ways no one has before, so we should get ready for a whole lot more of this over the next few months, and potentially even after Biden takes office. McConnell Pushes Judges Through And while all this is happening, the dirty grind of Mitch McConnell’s great political project continues unchecked. Thus far, McConnell has confirmed 53 of Trump’s picks for circuit judges and 164 district judges, not to mention _three_ Supreme Court justices. According to Newsweek, he could add another dozen to that tally before Trump leaves office. And even once Biden gets in, McConnell still has the votes to shoot down anyone Biden puts forward. On Thursday, McConnell moved forward another six judicial nominees, who could see full floor votes this week. Remember -- the Senate could be spending its legislative time trying to pass relief bills for the ongoing pandemic, but they’re not. And Democrats seem woefully unprepared to change this devastating reign of power. In an interview with CNN on Saturday, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin said his focus is finding “compromise” with Senate Republicans. Quote: "That's where the potential is for the future. With Republicans who are ready for the Senate to be active, engaged, and finding compromises in moving forward." ENDQUOTE. What planet are these people living on? McConnell has spent the past six years refusing to compromise in any way since he got a Senate majority in the 2014 midterms. If Democrats don’t wake up and realize they need to play hardball soon, the Biden years are going to be just another chapter of wasted potential. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Boris Johnson is self-isolating after being exposed to coronavirus... again. Johnson survived his own first case of the disease back in April but had to be hospitalized. SpaceX, the private spaceflight company founded by overly-rich provocteur Elon Musk, successfully launched a crewed rocket and capsule on Sunday, sending four astronauts into orbit where they will eventually link up with the ISS sometime on Monday night. After a hasty peace deal that let Azerbaijiani troops and Russian so-called peacekeepers flood into ethnic Armenian areas, fleeing civilians burned their own homes as they sought refuge behind Armenia’s borders. Business Insider obtained new video that shows the fake postal service whistleblower swore to his affidavit alleging voter fraud while in the same room as the founder of right-wing hit job site Project Veritas. The whistleblower later recanted his claims and said he made it up. LUCIE: That’s it for the Majority Report’s AM Quickie today! Stay tuned for the full show with Sam later today. Tribute to Hector Jonno's dog Hector very sadly passed away over the weekend, so Charly & Elt decided to do an ad hoc surprise podcast recording for him this week, as a special tribute. Welcome to the UK Consult - Mel Hagedorn from Bang the Table Australia! This is a first for the UK Consult as Elt and Charly welcome Australia and New Zealand Bang the Table Territory Manager Mel Hagedorn on to share her pearls of wisdom and experience, in addition to an awful Penguin related joke of course! Charly's Choons of the Week Elt's been listening to Roni Size's New Forms album, an absolute BELTER from all the way back in 1997. Have a listen here (https://open.spotify.com/album/0RFE2IiZa7OCGrEZngGlGJ). Charly's all Dancy this week, with a fantastic selection of chilled dance, taken from the Disclosure playlist. Check it out here(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMJCkQhz3X0)! Mel's into high octane, high pace music when at the gym. When working, maximum concentration is required, so here's a Spotify playlist (Classical music) called exactly that (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DX0wdQKgYFb7Q)! Word Play at The Table What will Mel & Charly come up with as Elt poses the following words and phrases to them? Determination In Depth Supportive EngagementHQ Site/Project Launches of the Week Elt & Charly are so excited to see the launch of Community Gateway's EngagementHQ site, an incredibly visually appealing site presided over by the fabulous Thomas Maughan. Take a look here (https://www.gateway2engagement.co.uk/). Mel describes the changes in the States around Australia with a shift beyond the use of surveys, into much more innovative ideation based consultation approaches with clients in Australia. Mug of the Week Proudly awarded to Thomas Maughan at Community Gateway for a CRACKING site launch! Meldrew Moments Charly is bemoaning the lockdown and the absence of a good old fashioned Fireworks display for families to attend. The lockdown came in a day before November 5th this year, meaning it was a "watching through the window" event for families across the UK. BOO! Mel is annoyed about Bluetooth headphones running out of charge during workouts at the gym, exposing her to the demotivating likes of Bon Jovi. She's also grumpy about online chat with certain companies. They could learn a LOT from the brilliance of our Bang the Table support team! Elt is perplexed by the soul patch at the top of his forehead, providing further compelling evidence that his head has indeed gradually turned upside down over the past 10 years! Mel's Webinar Shout Out! On Thursday, Mel is hosting a webinar about engaging with indigenous Australians. Don't worry if the timezones prevent you from attending, we'll circulate a recording afterward. If you want to sign up, you can do so here (https://www.bangthetable.com/resources/webinars/engaging-with-indigenous-australia/)! Enjoy!

So the 2020 election is in the history books. On Thursday, November 5th – two days after the polls closed – we hosted the first ever live episode of Sorry Not Sorry to put it in perspective. Our guests had such great information, and so many smart things to say that I know you’ll forgive the slightly less than perfect audio that comes from a live streamed event. At the time, it was clear that Biden has a significant popular vote margin, and was then about four million votes ahead of Donald Trump. But, despite that big win, the electoral college was not settled. Disunity still in our country, with a huge divide between Trump’s supporters and Biden’s supporters over the fundamental questions of what it means to be American. But the issues in this election go far wider than the presidency. Control of the senate still hangs in the balance, and won’t be decided until January. The conronavirus just reached its highest daily rate of new infections since the pandemic started and the fate of the affordable care act will decided by the Supreme Court, and what happens with healthcare by the new government next year. More than 100,000 Americans are victims of gun violence each year, and 40,000 of them die. And we can’t find the families of more than 500 immigrant children we separated at the border. It’s a lot. To help us make sense of it all, I’ve invited an incredible group of experts here tonight. We were joined by E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and the author of Code Red: How Progressives and Moderates Can Unite to Save Our Country, Jesse Wegman is a member of the New York Times Editorial Board and the author of Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College, Po Murray is Chair of the Newtown Action Alliance, Laura Packard is National Co-Chair of Health Care Voter, and Hassan Ahmad is an immigration attorney and immigrant rights activist. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

NPR and other outlets are reporting that Trump's team claims 15-20% of absentee ballots in Milwaukee County were "cured" or adjusted in red pen by poll workers, and that Trump legal volunteers observing the absentee processing were prevented from having “meaningful access all of the time." Today’s word of the day is ‘roulette’ as in the casino game as in gambling as in the Las Vegas Raiders gambled with the NFL….. and it lost… big time. On Thursday the NFL handed down a substantial fine to the Las Vegas Raiders for breaking coronavirus protocols for the 3rd time this season. Not only were they fined, but the NFL took away the team’s 2021 6th round pick. Wow. Roger Goodell and the NFL made a statement so let’s see if the rest of the league will finally listen (0:06). The NBA players have voted to approve the NBA season start on December 22nd. This is what we said would happen all along. The players needed to do this for TV money. It had to happen (8:17). The Cleveland Indians have a lot of decisions to make this offseason. The team is reportedly looking to trade star Francisco Lindor again. They failed to do so last season and that was a major mistake. Let me explain why (12:40). BREAKING NEWS! Alex Cora has been named manager of the Boston Red Sox. A little Friday news dump during the middle of the Presidential election. Why did the Red Sox bring back Cora after his year-long suspension was up? Because he was ALWAYS going to be the manager of the Red Sox again (21:40). Another NFL update! The NFL has fined Mike Tomlin ($100k) and the Steelers ($250K) for not properly wearing masks against the Baltimore Ravens (28:25). Review - Holidate (29:35). So You Wanna Talk To Samson!?
