Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. Bishop Robert Barron has long defended religious freedom as a universal human right. As part of his ongoing advocacy—which includes a new book on how to confront persecution against Christians—he has recently completed serving on a presidential religious liberty commission charged with ensuring that people of all faiths can participate fully in society without fear of violence or unjust discrimination. One of the few Catholic ecclesial voices on the commission, his work addressed multiple abiding and practical questions. For example, at the conceptual level, what is religious freedom, and what role should the government play in protecting it? How can we define religious freedom in a way that prevents one religion's exercise of their freedom from infringing upon the freedom of other religions, or on those who claim no religion at all? And at the more concrete level, where, right now, are the greatest threats to religious freedom and what can we do both legislatively and individually to combat them? Here to address these and related questions, and to discuss his experience serving on the presidential commission, is Bishop Robert Barron. In this Father's Day episode, Dr. Bud Marr hosts solo while co-host Bo Bonner travels through Europe, welcoming back an Uncommon Good "all-star": Joe Stopulos, host of the Man Up show on Iowa Catholic Radio. Both shows launched in 2016, and this episode marks an Iowa Catholic Radio mashup centered on one question — what does it mean to live a life well lived in light of eternity? The conversation grows out of Joe's recent loss of his father, who died after a fourteen-week battle with aggressive cancer. Joe shares the beauty found within that suffering: a death surrounded by family, the reception of communion and the sacrament of anointing, and a final afternoon of praying the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at his father's bedside. The discussion turns to the Church's teaching that we should never hasten death, and how that teaching preserved precious conversations, graces, and "teachable moments" that would otherwise have been lost. Highlights and themes include: The witness of service over selfishness — drawing on Joe's father, bookstore owner Lois Brookhart, Father Aquinas, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati as everyday and saintly models Bishop Robert Barron's challenge that "your life is not about you" Memento mori and Ben Sasse's reflections on facing mortality Living the joy of the gospel without needing to be a scholar or apologist — the "little way" of St. Thérèse and the humble witness of Blessed Solanus Casey and St. John Henry Newman Balancing vocation, career, and intentional time with children Health span and stewardship of the body — referencing Peter Attia's Outlive — as a way to keep serving others well into old age Tim Carney's Family Unfriendly and resisting the "Instagram" sheen of family life The Uncommon Good is a production of Iowa Catholic Radio, exploring Catholic social teaching for everyday life. Pray with us on air: the Rosary at 4:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 2:57 PM, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Rosary at 8:30 PM. Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. A wave of fresh converts has entered the Catholic Church in the United States, Australia, and parts of Europe. The evidence for this surge is far from anecdotal; even secular media outlets that are historically inclined to downplay positive stories about Catholicism widely reported packed sanctuaries this past Easter, the day those who have been preparing to enter the Catholic Church typically receive their first sacraments. This is welcome news for a Church that has grown accustomed to a half-century narrative of religious disaffiliation and cultural decline. So what's behind this uptick in conversions? What factors are leading young people—and young men in particular—to buck the trend of secularization and become Catholic? What is happening both in the world and within the Church that is making the faith become so attractive? Perhaps most importantly, what can and should Catholics, clergy and laity alike, do to both continue the momentum and help new converts to stick with faith? Here to offer his insights on what's driving this new growth and why, now more than ever, we should double our efforts to proclaim Christ in the culture is Bishop Robert Barron. The feast of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, historically known as Corpus Christi, celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Instituted in 1264 by Pope Urban IV, this commemoration emphasizes the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. It is often marked by solemn processions, Eucharistic adoration, and special masses. The Feast is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday (which is 60 days after Easter). Thursday was specifically chosen because it is the day of the week that Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. In the USA, Canada, and many other countries, it is observed on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. This adjustment or Sunday transfer is purely for pastoral reasons, making it easier for the faithful to attend Mass and participate in processions without taking time off during the workweek. How to Forgive Someone Without Letting Them Off the Hook featuring Father Stephen Gadberry

Father Stephen Gadberry is a Catholic priest ordained in 2016 after a path that took him from a small family farm in the Arkansas Delta through the United States Air Force, a deployment to Iraq, and all the way to Rome to study philosophy and theology. He competed on American Ninja Warrior in 2018 and 2020, has worked alongside Bishop Robert Barron and Word on Fire, and currently serves at Saint Theresa Catholic Church and School in Little Rock, Arkansas. In this conversation, Father Stephen opens up about losing his father and twelve-year-old sister in a car accident when he was just eight years old, how that tragedy shaped his understanding of duty and sacrifice, and what it felt like to receive his calling in the middle of a deployment in central Iraq. He is a hunter, archer, CrossFit athlete, knife maker, and musician who speaks about masculinity, suffering, and faith in a way that cuts through all the noise. We also get into forgiveness in a way I have never heard anyone break it down before. Father Stephen uses the image of a plant to walk through the entire process of healing a broken relationship, from cultivating the soil, to planting the seed, to watching for weeds, to understanding why we pull back just when things start to feel close. It is pastoral counsel and practical wisdom at the same time. This one hit me differently, guys. I am not kidding when I say I felt the weight of this conversation in my chest. If you have ever carried loss, wrestled with abandonment, or wondered how a man of deep faith actually lives out forgiveness in real time, this episode is for you.   Timeline Summary [1:02] Father Stephen and the host kick off by acknowledging this is take two, after a tech failure ended the first recording [1:55] Father Stephen explains his two appearances on American Ninja Warrior in 2018 and 2020 and what he was really trying to do with the cameras [4:20] The meaning behind the priest collar explained: white for speaking truth, black for death to self [6:07] Why traditions are not a threat to faith and how they are already woven into every man's life whether he realizes it or not [7:16] How the American Ninja Warrior exposure broke down barriers and gave people an entry point to seek pastoral help with marriages and personal struggles [13:25] Host introduces Father Stephen's background: raised on an Arkansas farm, lost his father and older sister at age eight in a car accident, later served in the Air Force and deployed to Iraq [17:22] Father Stephen describes the accident on May 5th, 1994, the deaths of his father and twelve-year-old sister, and how a young boy without comprehension of the full weight woke up every day and simply got it done [23:11] Two weeks after the accident, his mother discovered she was pregnant with twins, and the family's response to impossible circumstances [28:18] The Christmas delivery story: neighbors who brought gifts for the family after the accident and did it with enough grace and class that no one's dignity was taken [33:14] Father Stephen recalls warming up the minivan for his mother on cold Arkansas mornings as a child, and why the small act reveals a lifelong orientation toward serving others before himself [37:10] The story of how the calling to priesthood emerged during military service in Iraq, including a stranger at Mass who said, "You're thinking about being a priest, aren't you?" [43:30] How Father Stephen submitted his early separation paperwork from the Air Force and received approval in under two weeks, something that ordinarily takes months [46:30] The host shares his own story of his biological father leaving twice and reconnecting at age thirty, and asks Father Stephen about what it means to forgive at 98% but still carry that last 2% [52:07] The plant image of forgiveness: cultivating the soil, planting the seed, watching for weeds, and understanding that pulling things up too soon or too often kills what is trying to grow [1:00:54] Father Stephen helps the host understand the subconscious pull-back pattern that shows up in relationships after early abandonment and how to reframe those defense mechanisms rather than fight them [1:07:13] Closing thoughts and the little way of Saint Thérèse: do small things with big love, over and over   Five Key Takeaways Losing his father and sister at age eight did not break Father Stephen. It built in him a sense of duty and commitment so deep that he woke up every morning as a boy simply asking what needed to be done, and that orientation toward others before self became the foundation of everything he does as a priest. Sharing your humanity, not just your credentials, is what gives people permission to bring you their real problems. Father Stephen's Ninja Warrior appearances did not grow his ministry by making him impressive. They grew it by making him approachable. Forgiveness is not a moment. It is a plant. You cultivate the soil, you plant the seed at the right time in the right way, and then you let it sit. Going back every day to dig it up and see if it grew will kill it. The healing comes from doing the work and then having the patience to let it take root. Keeping a small part of unforgiveness is not a failure. It is memory. It is what tells you how to water the plant going forward, what burned it before, and what it needs to stay alive now. Forgetting is not the goal. Learning is. The soul remembers what hurt it, and sometimes that shows up as pulling back right when something good is getting close. That is not sabotage. That is an old defense mechanism doing its job. The work is to recognize it, name it, and gently push its limits rather than either surrendering to it or shaming yourself for it.   Links & Resources Follow Father Stephen on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/fatherstephenjgadberry Saint Theresa Catholic Church — https://www.sttheresalittlerock.org This Episode's Show Page — https://thedadedge.com/1484 Join the Dad Edge — https://thedadedge.com/join The Men's Forge — https://themensforge.com   Closing Father Stephen gave us something rare in this conversation: the kind of honesty that only comes from a man who has sat with real pain long enough to have something true to say about it. Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. Although not widely reported in legacy media outlets, Christianity is, by far, the most persecuted religion in the world. From the Middle East and Africa to India, China, North Korea, and elsewhere, Christian communities regularly experience widespread humiliation, imprisonment, kidnappings, expulsions, and even murderous mob violence. While not as severe, Christians in parts of Europe and even right here at home, in the US, also often endure discrimination, exclusion, and ridicule. There is no ambiguity about who is carrying out these attacks or what motivates them. Like the martyrs of past centuries, millions of our Christian brothers and sisters are currently suffering because they profess faith in Jesus Christ. In response to this ongoing outrage, Bishop Robert Barron has released a new book called What Do Their Deaths Demand? Christian Persecution Today. Intended for widespread distribution, the book spotlights heartbreaking stories of the continued targeting of Christian communities throughout the world, offers a theological explanation for why Christianity has been under assault since its inception, and, most importantly, provides actionable ideas for what all of us can do to respond. Here to discuss the book—and why its message is more urgent than ever—is Bishop Robert Barron. Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. The faithful recently rejoiced at the news that Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the great American evangelist who lived from 1895 to 1979, has moved forward in the canonization process. The Vatican recently announced that he will soon be beatified, which is one step away from being declared a saint. This is an especially happy development for Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, which, as an apostolate dedicated to evangelization, has a special devotion to Archbishop Sheen; in fact, his portrait hangs just beyond the studio doors where we are recording this show, next to our other patrons, St. Thérèse of Lisieux and Pope St. John Paul II. Looking back, what kind of enduring impact has Fulton Sheen had on evangelization and the Church? Looking forward, what can we continue to learn from him today, especially given the fact that the evangelical landscape has so drastically changed, both culturally and technologically, since Sheen's time? Here to celebrate Sheen's legacy, and how the great communicator continues to shape Word on Fire's own evangelical mission, is Bishop Robert Barron. The long-standing tradition of dedicating the month of May to the Virgin Mary began in the 13th century, though it became widely popular in the 1700s, particularly through the influence of the Jesuits. This month-long devotion's origins and historical development emphasized a christian custom that honors her as the Mother of God and Mother of the Church and highlights her role in salvation history and welcomes the spring season as a symbol of new life. May is considered the peak of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, with flowers and greenery representing new life, which is linked to Mary bringing Jesus into the world, symbolizing her queenship and purity. Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. The Old Testament is about three-quarters of the Bible. It is theologically and morally impossible for Christians to understand God's relationship with the world, the nature and purpose of human beings, original sin, salvation history, the person of Jesus Christ, and the foundation of the Church without it. Indeed, as far back as the second century AD, the Church condemned the heresy of Marcionism, which sought to distinguish the God of the Old Testament from the God of the New Testament and to lop off the Old Testament from the biblical canon. There is and never has been, in short, Christianity without the Old Testament. Nevertheless, much of the text remains difficult for the faithful to understand and, even more so, to explain to others, especially to those who know nothing about it. To make matters more complicated, secular critics of the faith often try to use the Old Testament against it, arguing—like the Marcionites of the past—that belief in the Old Testament is both irrational and immoral. So how should Catholics respond? What are some strategies we can employ not only to make the Old Testament accessible but also evangelically compelling? Here to help us understand the Old Testament and its enduring evangelical power, especially in a highly secularized culture, is Bishop Robert Barron. Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. Hollywood is not known for being friendly to Christianity in general or Catholicism in particular, especially nowadays; unfortunately, there is no shortage of storylines and characters that mock and even demonize believers. At the same time, however, whenever the film industry wishes to depict a "religious looking" scene or add a transcendent element to the plot, it frequently employs Catholic architecture, Catholic sacramentals, and even Catholic priests to do so. What should we make of this ambivalence to the faith? What does Hollywood get wrong, and what, perhaps to our surprise, does Hollywood get right about Catholicism and the priesthood? What do these portrayals tell us more broadly about potential openness within the entertainment industry to God's existence, the divinity of Christ, good and evil, and life after death? Here to take a look at some pivotal classic and contemporary films that prominently feature Catholicism and Catholic priests, with an eye to unpacking their significance for the wider entertainment culture, is Bishop Robert Barron. Celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, that is the Second Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday is a major feast day in the Catholic Church dedicated to the devotion of God's mercy. Instituted by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000, it stems from revelations to St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-38), offering complete forgiveness of sins and punishment, that is, a plenary indulgence, to those who receive Communion and go to confession. Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, Senior Director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. Marxism, unfortunately, seems to be making a comeback. Despite its economically disastrous, politically oppressive, and horrifically inhumane track record, the atheistic philosophy that produced the Communist revolution and eventually led to the deaths of tens of millions of people has wheedled its way back to the center of our political culture. On the surface, this may sound surprising: Since the fall of the Berlin Wall over three decades ago, few public figures have openly identified as Marxist, and Communist political parties have typically occupied the outermost fringes of political influence. However, Marxist ideas–especially in the form of contemporary identity politics–have not only continued gathering momentum beneath the surface in universities, NGOs, the media, corporate HR departments, and government bureaucracies; high profile politicians, including the mayor of New York, Zohran Mandami, and Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, now seem to be openly advocating for Marxist policies. So how did this morally and historically discredited ideology remerge in mainstream politics? Equally important, how should Christians and all people concerned with basic human rights and the common good respond? Here to discuss the dark history of Marxism, its contemporary forms, and how the Catholic Church has, and always will, stand against it, is Bishop Robert Barron. That moment opens a bigger problem we can't ignore: testimony culture is starting to look like confession-as-branding, where past sin becomes a credential and conversion becomes a content strategy. We dig into what this does to the moral imagination, especially for younger Christians who grew up trying to live faithfully. When dramatic stories get rewarded, it quietly teaches that holiness is boring and that wreckage is a prerequisite for meaning. We talk about repentance versus performance, the temptation toward antinomian thinking, and why public scandal isn't erased by a quick “sorry” when real harm was done. Then we pivot to the political-theology fight blowing up online: Catholic integralism, natural law, religious liberty, and why figures like Scott Hahn are suddenly getting name-dropped as threats on mainstream shows. We react to the Eric Metaxas clip with James Lindsay and John Zmirak, clarify what integralism actually claims about the relationship between temporal power and spiritual authority, and challenge the “we don't impose morality” line that collapses the moment you remember that every law encodes a moral vision. We also connect the dots to the convert boom narrative, Zionism pressure, Gaza framing, and the way “anti-Semitism” gets used as a debate-ending weapon. We read and respond to public statements in the Carrie Prejean Boller controversy and Bishop Robert Barron's response, emphasizing the need to condemn real racism while refusing to treat all criticism of Israel, Judaism, or public behavior as hatred. Matthew digs into the fascism-enabling political theology of Bishop Robert Barron and the rightward slide of Big Catholic media. From his early admiration of Thomas Merton—carefully stripped of his antiwar and anti-capitalist passion—to his praise for Jordan Peterson, Marco Rubio, and Charlie Kirk, Barron repackages Red Scare tropes in the language of beauty, civility, and “religious liberty.” And what about his virtual silence on ICE operations in Minnesota and the suffering of immigrants within his own diocese? Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. In our last episode, Evangelization & Culture Podcast host Tod Worner began a conversation with Word on Fire's founders about social media, in which they explored the art and means of communication. In this next segment, we'll continue that conversation, now examining Catholic ministry and social media. What, if anything, does social media have to do with Pope St. John Paul II? How does it fit into Word on Fire's own principles? How would one even define social media? Here to discuss these things with Tod Worner and Fr. Steve Grunow is Bishop Robert Barron. Celebrated by many Western Christian denominations, including Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, and other Protestant Churches such as Methodists and Moravians, The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord commemorates Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, marking the start of His public ministry and the first manifestation of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). It's a liturgical feast that concludes the Christmas season, typically observed on the first Sunday after Epiphany (January 6th) in Western Christianity, bridging to Ordinary Time, and it signifies the beginning of Christian life through baptism, uniting believers with Christ. January First is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics (meaning that Mass attendance is required), also observed by some Protestants (Anglicans & Lutherans) as a related feast. On this day, the Church proclaims Mary as Theotokos (God-bearer), affirming that the Son she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit is truly God and truly man. The Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is thus a liturgical celebration observed on January 1st and marks the octave of Christmas, celebrating her divine motherhood. Debate on the Source of Rights The episode opens with criticism of Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, who argued in a Senate hearing that constitutional rights come from the government rather than from God. Cruz frames this as a radical departure from America’s founding principles, citing the Declaration of Independence and Thomas Jefferson’s writings. The discussion emphasizes that if rights come from government, they can be taken away, whereas God-given rights are “unalienable.” Religion and the Democratic Party Cruz and Ferguson argue that the Democratic Party is increasingly hostile toward people of faith (Christian, Jewish, Catholic). They highlight responses from religious leaders, including Bishop Robert Barron, who strongly opposed Kaine’s remarks and defended the idea that rights come from God. Border Security and the Cartels The podcast shifts to the issue of border security and drug cartels, especially the Sinaloa cartel. They cite a DEA operation in New England that arrested 171 cartel members in one week, seizing fentanyl and counterfeit pills. Cruz and Ferguson warn about the danger of fentanyl-laced pills, especially for young people, describing it as a national epidemic and the leading cause of death among Americans aged 18–45. U.S. Government Action Against Cartels They discuss U.S. military and DEA efforts to combat cartels, including operations in Mexico, Venezuela, and the Caribbean. Cruz praises the government’s recent designation of cartels as terrorist organizations and the deployment of military assets to fight drug trafficking. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now.
