Patrick tackles some big faith questions, from how attending Saturday vigil Mass fulfills Sunday obligation, to the life-changing power of confession. Patrick addresses Church teaching on salvation, the significance of mercy and prayer, and encourages those yearning to return to their faith. Whether someone faces spiritual doubts or seeks support in the Catholic journey, Patrick offers clarity, encouragement, and inspiration for anyone looking to grow closer to God. Jennifer – Does a Vigil Mass count as our Sunday obligation? (03:23) Michelle (email) - I am 63 and had an abortion at 19. It’s something you never forget and know the pain in your heart for life. God does know our heart and our level of the remorse. (06:48) Elvia - When Jesus said whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven, Thomas wasn't present so did he not get the gift that Jesus gave? (11:03) A Concerned Father (email) - don’t believe I’m a controlling father, but my daughter’s reaction to my advice often makes me question myself. (16:28) Patrick in Mt. Laurel, NJ - What are apostolic blessings or pardons and how many times can we receive it? (22:01) Sally - Can Jews go to heaven if they don't believe in Jesus? (29:31) Michael – The thief on the cross was not Christian, yet he was told he would be in paradise. (39:17) Lizeth - I went to confession after 15 years and it was great! (44:31) Chris – “For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”, what is up with the word 'many'? (48:48)
Patrick tackles tough family conversations, like handling confusing messages about gender with grandkids and standing firm in faith when it’s unpopular. Patrick answers questions about abstaining from meat during Holy Week, clears up misunderstandings about Catholic customs, and offers advice on enjoying music that fits Catholic values. He explains why some parishes shorten Easter Vigil readings and addresses whether Catholics need to host Seder meals. Maureen - My 5-year-old grandson told me that some boys don't have penises. How am I supposed to respond to this? It seems like child abuse. (01:50) Email – What counts as a Vigil Mass? (07:41) Mischa - Can you recommend any ways I can ethically listen to popular music that is not specifically religious, but is not in conflict with Catholic values? (09:21 Andrew - How is Church fairing with respect and solemnity of Triduum? (12:43) Maggie - In Mexico, we had a tradition to abstain from meat during the entire Holy Week? is this just a cultural tradition? (22:06) Robert – Are there any comments from the early Church Father's on what Our Lord was doing in the Temple? (29:12) Maribel - The Vatican website says that the local bishops have further authority in this practice. The US conference of Bishops are clear in this but in Mexico, some bishops have said that people can eat chicken. Hence the confusion among these people. (34:47) Lilly - If we die in state of grace, does Jesus remember our sins? Will he reveal all of our sins? (37:25) Carmen - Do Catholics make Seder meals on Holy Thursday? Is there a good Holy Thursday meal? (42:51)

Bishop Scott Bullock Homily from the Vigil Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rapid City December 31, 2024
Matthew 1:18-25 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.
Reading IIs 62:1-5 For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch. Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory; you shall be called by a new name pronounced by the mouth of the LORD. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal diadem held by your God. No more shall people call you “Forsaken,” or your land “Desolate,” but you shall be called “My Delight,” and your land “Espoused.” For the LORD delights in you and makes your land his spouse. As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you; and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you.Reading IIActs 13:16-17, 22-25When Paul reached Antioch in Pisidia and entered the synagogue,he stood up, motioned with his hand, and said, “Fellow Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people during their sojourn in theland of Egypt. With uplifted arm he led them out of it.Then he removed Saul and raised up David as king;of him he testified,‘I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;he will carry out my every wish.'From this man's descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he.Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.'”GospelMt 1:18-25This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”All this took place to fulfillwhat the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”When Joseph awoke,he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941), a martyr and priest. Born in Zdunska Wola, Poland, as Raymond Kolbe, he consecrated himself to the Lord in the Franciscan Order. Filled with love for the Virgin, he founded the Militia of the Immaculata movement of Marian consecration. To better "win the world for the Immaculata," with his preaching and writing, undertook an intense apostolic mission in Europe and Asia. Imprisoned in Auschwitz during the Second World War, he offered himself in exchange for the father of a large family who was to be executed. He was given a lethal injection on August 14, 1941. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian as a "martyr of charity" in 1982, proclaiming him the "Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century. Maximilian, patron of the pro-life movement, was a ground-breaking theologian. He developed the Church's understanding of Mary as a "Mediatrix" of all the graces of the Trinity and as an "Advocate" for God's people. "For Jesus Christ, I am prepared to suffer more still," he said. Also, today, on the evening of August 14, the Vigil Mass for the Assumption is celebrated. Today is the 4th Sunday of Advent. It is also Christmas Eve. Because this year Advent is as short as it can be, with Christmas falling on a Monday, we don't really get a “fourth week of Advent.” We only get a 4th Sunday, and even then not the whole Sunday, with our Christmas celebrations beginning with the 4:30 Vigil Mass. Once every seven years we get Christmas and Advent in one Sunday like this. The altar is decorated with poinsettias, in anticipation of that celebration. The crib has been laid out, in anticipation of the Christ-child. This can all make it feel like Christmas is already here, but it isn't. We are still in purple. The crib is empty. It is still Advent for a few hours more.

"She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." The Gospel of Matthew's carefully crafted genealogy of the Messiah is upended by divine intervention. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the Son of God was born of the Virgin Mary.
Father Matthew shares an interesting story about losing water at his guest house and the potential cancellation of Thanksgiving. But, as the Lord always does, a solution arose and Thanksgiving plans were saved. The conversation then shifts to a caller's question about civil ceremonies and church weddings, specifically in the context of different countries like Mexico. The answer highlights the importance of recognizing both legal and religious aspects of marriage. Later, another caller seeks guidance on the responsibilities of Godparents and how to fulfill those duties as their godchildren grow into adulthood. Lastly, a heartfelt call from Jesse reveals struggles with sin and doubts about God's presence. Father Matthew reassures Jesse of God's unwavering love and encourages him to seek healing and reconciliation through confession. Liz - Why is it not allowed to do a civil wedding and then later a Church wedding? Ann - What are my responsibilities to my adult godchildren? Jesse - I gave myself to the Lord about a year ago. (13:20) Madeline - Regarding the marriage debt, is it no longer a free choice to give yourself to your spouse after you are married since you have to fulfil it? Vigil Mass for the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I - Isaiah 55:6-9 Reading II - Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a Gospel - Matthew 20:1-16a
Friends of the Rosary: Today, the Memorial of St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe (1894-1941), Polish priest and martyr, is celebrated by the Universal Church. Maximilian Mary Kolbe founded the Militia of the Immaculate Mary, a movement of Marian consecration that undertook an intense apostolic mission in Europe and Asia. The friars of the Militia of the Immaculate Mary utilized modern printing and administrative techniques to "win the world for the Immaculata". They launched a daily newspaper with a circulation of 230,000, a monthly magazine with a circulation of over one million, and a shortwave radio station. Maximilian was a true "apostle of the mass media" and a ground-breaking theologian. He further developed the Church's understanding of Mary as a "Mediatrix" of all the graces of the Trinity, and as an "Advocate" for God's people. In 1941, the Nazis imprisoned Father Maximilian in the Auschwitz death camp. There he offered his life for another prisoner and was condemned to slow death in a starvation bunker. On August 14, 1941, his impatient captors ended his life with a lethal injection. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian as a "martyr of charity" in 1982 and proclaimed him the "Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century." St. Maximilian Kolbe is considered a patron of journalists, families, prisoners, the pro-life movement, and the chemically addicted. Also, today in the evening, the Vigil Mass for the Assumption is celebrated. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!
