On Saturday August 17th, Los Angeles Football Club (18-4-3) defeated Real Salt Lake (12-4-10) in Rio Tinto Stadium, ending the team's eight-game home unbeaten streak. Both teams lost a man in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Walker Zimmerman's second yellow in the 48th minute put LAFC down a man for a 14-minute stretch. LAFC maintained its poise until Vela leveled the pitch by earning a penalty at the cost of RSL defender Aaron Herrera in the 62nd. Vela's subsequent goal from the spot broke a tie with Sebastian Giovinco's record for the most combined goals and assists in one season. Giovinco had 38 (22 goals, 16 assists) in 2015. With nine games to go in 2019, Vela now has 39 (24 goals, 15 assists). Three road points later, LAFC is set for a busy rivalry week against its Californian neighbors. Ryan Wallerson of the Southern California News Group (Daily News) & Alex Dwyer of MLSsoccer.com break down LAFC's performance against the Real Salt Lake, Vela's moment against RSL, and discuss the challenges that await LAFC during rivalry week, which begins on Wednesday, August 21st against the San Jose Earthquake and continues on Sunday August 25th against the Galaxy. On Saturday August 19th in Boston, Massachusetts, one week after the KKK, Neo-nazi’s and the “alt-right” marched into Charlottesville, Virginia; 40,000 protestors took to the streets of Boston to stand up against white supremacy. That same day, an unknown number of Boston and State Police descended upon those protestors. The corporate and local media, the Mayor, and Police Commissioner Evans claimed the day was a success. The 50 or so “free speech rally” attendees got out safely and those that were arrested were, to quote Donald Trump, just "police agitators". The truth is most of the 33 people arrested ended up getting caught up in the dragnet of the police state. In this episode of Under Reported, Co-Produced by DigBoston and the Boston Institute for Non-Profit Journalism (BINJ) I speak with Carl Williams, Staff Attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts; and Kimberly Carlisle and Jay Kelly, two of the 33 people arrested on August 19th.
A group of white nationalists marched on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville, VA, the night of Friday August 11, 2017 carrying tiki torches and chanting Nazi slogans including â??Sieg heilâ?? and â??blood and soilâ?? and giving the Nazi salute. The march was a prelude to a larger planned â??Unite the Rightâ?? rally on Saturday to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in a park in Charlottesville. Leaders of the â??alt-rightâ?? are scheduled to speak before an audience of hundreds of right-wing activists. At one point during Friday nightâ??s rally, a brawl broke out when demonstrators â?? nearly all white men â?? surrounded a small group of counterprotesters who were peacefully surrounding a statue of Thomas Jefferson at the center of campus. Counterprotesters reported being hit with pepper spray by marchers; one counterprotester also used a â??chemical sprayâ?? against marchers. Participants chanted slogans â?? â??White Lives Matter,â?? â??You will not replace us,â?? â??blood and soilâ?? â?? that alluded to the white-nationalist idea that ethnic and religious diversity is â??white genocide.â?? On Saturday August 12, 2017 one person was killed and 19 were hurt when a speeding car slammed into a throng of counterprotesters in Charlottesville, where a "Unite the Right" rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups had been scheduled to take place, the city tweeted on its verified account. A 32-year-old woman was killed while walking across the street, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas said. Police were still in the process of notifying her family. Two Virginia State Patrol troopers were killed in a helicopter crash while "assisting public safety resources with the ongoing situation in Charlottesville,"
On Saturday August 12, 2017, in Charlottesville, Virginia, deep wounds within the hearts of all Americans were uncovered. Across the airwaves, with broadcasts on repeat, the wounds are currently being festered. The atmosphere is thick and heavy. You don't have to be observant to sense it; to feel it. However, there remains a story buried deep in the commotion; a voice to be found in rest and stillness, but in the midst of the storm, if you are only seeing the physical state of the Union (or dis-union) and tuning-in to the world's airwaves, you will miss it completely. We had the privilege of speaking with Jon Quesenberry, Director of the Charlottesville House of Prayer, who led a group into the midst of the storm on that Saturday morning, not to take any side or argue any point, but to appeal by another road. The results from their faith in action? You will just need to hear yourself...
