In episode 40 of the Cyber5, we are joined by Professor of Cyber Psychology and former Producer of CSI Cyber, Mary Aiken. Mary discusses the psychology of online behavior, particularly with regard to social media and how it plays a critical role leading to extremist ideology. Here are the 5 Topics We Cover in this Episode: Defining Cyber Psychology as it Relates to Cyber Space: (01:00-05:52) Cyber psychology is the study of the impact of technology on human behavior. We maintain that human behavior can fundamentally change or mutate in cyber context. Key constructs include ODE, or the Online Disinhibition Effect, which dictates that people will perform actions in a cyber context they would not normally do in the real world. In addition, anonymity is a powerful psychological driver online and while some argue that online anonymity is a fundamental right, they are not accurate; it's an invention of the internet and behavior is evolving at the speed of technology. Defining Cyberspace for Corporate Enterprise: (05:24-09:52) In 2016, NATO ratified cyberspace as an environment, acknowledging battles of the future will take place on land, sea, air, and computer networks. In addition to thinking about how the military fights these future battles, it's also important for enterprises to understand how their businesses and employees operate online and address various threat actors. Psychology Evolving as Extremism Transitions Online: (09:52-12:00) People are prone to write more adversarial thoughts online because they are not receiving the same micro-expressions, body language, proximity, and feedback they would receive in person. Mary feels addiction does not exist with technology because we rely on it just like we rely on air or water; however, we have to play catch up as a society for how to recognize and curb aggressive online behavior. Online Safety Technology: (12:00-16:00) While a lot of threat intelligence is geared toward the confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C.I.A.) of data, systems, and networks, it does not focus on what it means to be human. Many in the business community, including Paladin Capital, are starting to invest in safety technologies and services that combat the relationship between the C.I.A. of data systems and the behavioral aspects of cyber security, such as insider threat, harassment, cyber bullying, and disinformation to deliver holistic security capabilities. Extremist Behavior Online Filtering into Violence in the Real World: (16:00-21:00) When people are constantly circulating in echo chambers online, fueled by false information and hate speech, combined with ODE, this has huge potential for violence in the real world, as displayed during the Capitol Hill riots in 2021. It's going to be critical for enterprises to monitor cyberspace from a brand reputation perspective, and not just for negative sentiment against products and services. It will also be critical to understanding the sentiment behind how employees behave in a manner that is not detrimental to the brand's image.

By Davy Crockett  Part 4 of the Rim-to-Rim History Series. See also Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 For anyone hiking or running rim-to-rim, most people will usually stop at a location about a mile below Roaring Springs that today is called the Manzanita Rest area, named after a creek coming down a small nearby side canyon. But the name and the rest area are a fairly new, a 2015 creation. Newer visitors have no idea that there is a rich history that took place at that location from 1973-2005. For veteran rim-to-rim hikers and runners, they still call this place fondly, “The Aiken Home.” Yes, a couple lived there and raised three children in the depth of the canyon for more than three decades. The Aiken family made a deep impact on rim-to-rim history by helping, greeting, and even feeding thousands of visitors over the years. Bruce Aiken managed the crucial water system at nearby Roaring Springs completed in 1971, and Mary Aiken taught and raised their children and assisted hikers. Who were the Aikens? How did they come to live in the Canyon? What was it like for three energetic children to spend their childhood in the Canyon away from many modern conveniences and “normal” entertainment and childhood friends? What was life like for them? Their tale is now almost forgotten, and evidence that they lived there has been replaced by a rest area and ranger station. But when I visit that amazing spot (nearly 40 times), I always think about the Aiken family and visualize the unique family that lived there for so many years. Bruce Aiken’s early years Richard Aiken - painting by Margaret Aiken Bruce Aiken was born September 10, 1950 in New York City’s Greenwich Village to Richard and Margaret Aiken. He was the second of a family of five boys. His father, Richard Little Aiken (1918-1997) grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where his father was a lawyer. Richard graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1940, in theatre. He worked as a sports announcer for a local radio station and an actor. Following Pearl Harbor, Richard enlisted in the Navy, and became a naval aviator. He met Margaret during the war and afterwards they married and settled in Greenwich Village, New York City, where all their children were born. There, he worked for NBC as a television producer. Margaret Aiken - self portrait Margaret Davis Aiken (1924-2003) was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, raised in Arizona along the Mexican border, where her father was an immigration inspector. During the Great Depression her family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she studied art at Arizona State University. During World War II, she served in the navy women’s reserve as a WAVE in Santa Ana, California, where she met Richard. Margaret became a very accomplished artist. Her paintings were widely shown in New York, Florida, and at the Grand Canyon. Bruce in 1963 The family moved to Long Island where young Bruce started to draw and paint with his mother. The family often went on vacations to Arizona, to visit his grandparents and cousins. A 1963 visit to the Canyon had a deep impact on young Bruce. In art school - 1968 In 1968, Bruce graduated from high school and was voted “most talented.” Following in his mother’s footsteps, he was interested in art and enrolled in New York’s prestigious School of the Visual Arts. His father wanted him to go into advertising because he believed that was where the money was, but Bruce wanted to be an artist. Bruce said, “I suppose he was trying to help, but I think he was too domineering, too demanding and too unwilling to hear or understand what I was trying to do.” This caused a rift between the two that would last for years. Aiken attended the art school for only two years, saying, “I got caught up in all the things happening in the ‘60s and decided that what I really wanted to do was live in the West. I fell in love with Arizona during my visits and knew I wanted to live there.” In 1970,

If you’ve been on any sort of social media over the last two weeks, you know that the Momo challenge was making its rounds again on the internet. News feed filled up with the disgusting details of this challenge, that I won’t go into here. Then we started to see how this challenge was probably a hoax, a modern day urban legend. Real or not, the internet still has a problem. I saw with my very own two eyes multiple videos with this so-called bird-human creepy character urging the viewer to harm him or herself. I’ve also seen a video that has “Filthy Frank” spliced into the video reminding kids that “sideways for attention, longways for results.” That video has since been removed.  (Also, don’t google that term. Some pretty disgusting images come up in search results.) Now, if we look at this with a critical eye, this brings up a few thoughts for me. Where are these videos and why are they on the internet at all? It’s tough to share with you these videos, mostly because once they are reported YouTube and YouTube kids has been great about taking these videos down. I found a pediatrician online how blogs quite a bit about keeping kids safe online. She recorded a few of these videos to share. Even after viewing her website a few times, he videos OF the videos are getting pulled off the internet. (Which is good, but you can see why it’s tough to show you that this is actually happening).  She has a few more videos here to give you some examples. Of course any sort of content needs to be taken in context. Some of the videos do appear to be made by children themselves. My point is, this stuff is out there and you need to know this. It’s also difficult to tell if some of the videos are copycats of the urban legend that is Momo. Here’s one example of a video, but there’s really not enough information to to figure out if this is a copycat or not. Doesn’t matter. It’s out there and you need to know this too. YouTube is demonetizing any videos about the Momo challenge in an effort to stop this from being spread. I think this is a good move on their part to just stop the spread of such horrible information. So, anyways. I am sharing this information because there really is a lot of crap on the internet. It is a good reminder of how well social engineering works. Hoax or not, there is still this dark side to the internet that many of us don’t know about. If you’re interested in learning more about what really goes on in the dark corners of the web, I highly recommend the book “The Cyber Effect” by Mary Aiken (this is an affiliate link where I earn a small commission.) Dr. Aiken studies a new branch of psychology that intersects with technology called cyberpsychology. In her book, she explains how “technology is shaping our children, our behavior, and our values and what we can do about it.” It’s really eye opening as to exactly HOW some of this terrible, disgusting things actually happen right in front of our eyes on social media. It’s a great read and worth it to read a couple of times. I even have it as an audio book and a printed copy, it’s that good!
