On this weeks programme, Noirin Lynch joins Shane and John to reflect on how things are at this moment in time. As always, Noirin leads us through some thought provoking and often slightly different way of dealing and how do we find hope in the midst of so much change? Sometimes its tempting to insist that a familiar prayer or line of scripture MUST make sense of it all – but of course we are in unfamiliar times, so old usual’s can be great but can also be useless. And that’s ok. What matters is that we connect with God, not how we connect in this strange new time!"How are you? Several people spoke to me last week about how it special Holy Week was – a real sense of journeying down into the tomb – and how hard it was to feel the usual joy of Easter, the sense of resurrection. A friend said she felt down in a small dark place still. And I was reminded of the Lasaux caves in France where explorers one day found themselves in small underground caves, dark and dull. And someone raised a torch and found that prehistoric artists had drawn the most beautiful and amazing images of animals and hunters all around the roof in beautiful colours. Totally surprising everyone - in this dark place, beauty was all around. Is it possible to find God in the darkness, in the dullness? Can there be beauty here?Kim Rosen has a stunning simple poem about the caterpillar moving into a cocoon. Before I read it, can I tell you that when a caterpillar forms a cocoon, it has no intention of becoming a butterfly. Slowly in the darkness the cells of the caterpillar began to vibrate and change, and when enough cells vibrate, the caterpillar liquifies and begins to reform in this new way – a weak, vulnerable butterfly that will need to push the blood through its wings as it squeezes out of this tight space. Kim Rosen writes:Do you know howthe caterpillarturns?Do you rememberwhat happensinside a cocoon? You liquefy. There in the thick blackof your self-spun womb, void as the moon before waxing, you melt(as Christ didfor three daysin the tomb)conceivingin impossible darknessthe sheerinevitabilityof wings.I am reminded of the apostles leaving Jerusalem to walk home, by Emmaus. Men who had made a huge commitment to Jesus, who had left normality and followed hope. Men who found their hero knocked, rejected and even shamed with crucifixion. Men who tried to make sense of it all as they walked. Men whose heartbreak was vibrating out of them in waves of hurt – and their dream liqueifying. What sense could be made of it all? I wonder why didn’t Jesus interrupt them and just tell them the answer … as the women had already? Surely they only needed to hear from him and it’d all make sense. Yet he didn’t rush them – he let them speak, listened, offered possibilities, allowed them time in this dark place, this cocoon of disappointment.Rebecca Solinit is an American writer and had a lovely article this week about fairy tales and living in the now. She reminded me that, in her words, ‘Nearly all of us would like to be at the end of the story, because to live in the middle of it is to live in suspense and uncertainty about what will happen.’ Isn’t that so Emmaus! Jesus stayed with them in the middle of it all, the ending was not guaranteed. Isn’t that what these weeks are like – if we only knew the ending of the story it would be so much easier!God is present in the groceries delivered, in the cowslip in a corner, in the phone call, in the soft pillow or strong support. If its hard to find God in the extraordinary, its ok to find God in the ordinary – that is the work of poets. See the beauty, celebrate the beauty, call it hope!I’ll finish by sharing where I found God in these weeks – in good people. Ordinary people who were kind or gentle or positive. Signs of Hope and Healing. Moments of joy and of peace. I wish you all this.

Fr Eamonn reminds us that Pope Francis has described this as a time of choosing. On this weeks programme John and Shane reflect on the feast of Epiphany and the different traditions and customs around the celebration of the last major feast of the Christmas season. St Matthew tells us (2:1-12) that Wise Men came from out of the east seeking the new born child as the Messiah of the whole world not just for the people of Israel. Their homage to him upon locating him in Bethlehem is representative of the whole world who adore the Holy Child and recognise his Divine Kingship, he who is the Light of the World."They set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."The feast of the Epiphany in the latin rite tradition focuses on the manifestation or showing of the Child Jesus to the Magi or Wise men who have come to seek the new King of the Jews. The three wisdom seekers represent the gentiles; those outside the covenanted community of Israel to whom the Messiah will also come. Where the shepherds represented the Chosen People, the three magi represent all those who truly search and seek for God in our world even if from out side our community and experiences. The questions this familiar part of the Christmas narrative can pose to us include:What "star" do I follow in my life? Do I follow the Morning Star which is Christ or do I have other things I follow?Am I open to seeing the Divine in others even if they are different from me?Like the Wise men, am I willing to trust in God and go where She leads me, even if it means travelling far (literally or metaphorically), believing that God will be "my staff and my shield"?But like the shepherds, the three magi did not stay in Bethlehem, they had to go back out into the world, back to their homes and families and daily lives; just like we have to. But they took the message of what they had seen and heard with them. Epiphany demands that like these kings we should return to our own countries a different way, carrying to all those we meet the light of Christ. "For behold, darkness shall cover the earth," says the Epistle of the Epiphany Mass, "and a mist the people: but the Lord shall arise upon Thee, and His glory shall be seen upon Thee. And the Gentiles shall walk in Thy light..." These words may be applied to us, upon whom the light of Christ has indeed risen, and who have the responsibility to radiate that light in the darkness of our own world. It is clear how much the feast of Epiphany must mean to all who are engaged in the apostolate and are striving to extend the kingdom of Christ.

May the Peace of the Babe of Bethlehem be the gift you receive this Christmastide.FromJohn, Ann, & Shane *******************"In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child;and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them." - (Luke 2: 1-20)

But that is after Sarah takes us down memory lane outlining the tumultuous arrival of 3 Italian sisters and 1 English sister into Limerick in the middle of the War of Independence and the start of the Civil War and the challenges from church and State for them to get into the heart of their ministry of education for girls and young women with the Department of Education holding out until 1947 before granting them recognition! For listeners looking for the series of forthcoming events to mark the centenary of the sisters in Ireland you can get further information at www.salesiansisters.net or at the FB page - Salesian Sisters 100 Years in Ireland.

On this weeks programme John is joined again by Fr Frank Duhig. As we enter the season of Advent and the beginning of a new liturgical year, Fr Frank shares some reflections with us.The word Advent comes from the Latin word Adventus, meaning arrival or coming. Advent talks about two comings, First we recall the birth of Jesus and also about the coming of Jesus at the end of time. Our readings at Mass during Advent help us to prepare for the coming of Jesus, to open our hearts to welcome him. This period of waiting allows us to take stock of our lives, looking to see what lies in our hearts that should not be there and remove any obstacle that prevents us from welcoming Jesus. The Sacrament of Confession fits perfectly into Advent as it prepares us for Christmas in a more meaningful way. We also include a short reflection on the Advent wreath.

This week Fr Frank Duhig returns to continue his reflections on the Mass. Fr Frank tells us how Christ is present in four different ways when the Eucharist is celebrated. Theologians point out that Christ is present in the congregation, in the ordained priest, in the Word of God and in what we call the Eucharistic species, the Real Presence of Christ. We use the phrase 'I believe' four times in the Creed. First we focus on our belief in God the Father, then the Son, followed by the Holy Spirit and finally the Church founded by Christ. Fr Frank then reflects with us on the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Moving from the Ambo to the Altar, the Mass continues with the Offertory or the preparation of the Gifts. The Eucharistic Prayer now follows at the the heart of which is the Consecration Prayer when our gifts of Bread and Wine become the the Real Presence of Christ as the Priest prays 'THIS IS MY BODY, THIS IS MY BLOOD'. Fr Frank reminds us that none of us understands this but we accept by faith based on the teaching of Jesus.Fr Frank reminds us of the importance of what he calls the Great Amen at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer. After reflecting on everyone praying the 'Our Father' prayer, Fr Frank reflects on the Sign of Peace before we come to the part of the Mass where Jesus offers us his Body at Communion. We now come to the end of Mass and Fr Frank reminds us of being 'sent out' to go in Peace to love and serve the Lord.
