In 2004, DC Comics released 'Countdown to Infinite Crisis," and set in motion a six-month buildup to what would be the most monumental crossover in recent DC history, Infinite Crisis. This May, that 'countdown" and buildup to Infinite Crisis is the topic for the annual JLMay crossover. It is "The Event Before The Event." In this episode, I step in to take on the only miniseries from that time that you'd expect, which is The Return of Donna Troy. But in order for you to actually understand how and why Donna Troy is returning (and where she went in the first place, you need to know the answer to the age-old question ... "Who is Donna Troy?" And trust me, the answer is complicated. Join me as I look at Donna's origin and history through its most important phases--the swingin' '60s original Teen Titans, the Wolfman-Perez classics "Who is Donna Troy?" and "Who is Wonder Girl?", and even the Nineties where she was the victim of crossover shenanigans and John Byrne. And that's just a warm-up for my coverage of the four-issue miniseries that's written by Phil Jimenez, penciled by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (praised be his name) and inked by George Perez. As always, check out the blog for show notes, and don't forget that you can email me at popcultureaffidavit@gmail.com!

It’s the middle episode of our 3-part examination of The Judas Contract! We discuss Wolfman/Perez’s penchant for framed tales, consider the Deathstroke’s trajectory, argue quite earnestly that Gar Logan ought to be canceled for his vile workplace harassment tactics, and try to remember exactly what the hell happens with Jericho much later in the decade. We bid a bewildering farewell to Brother Blood and the Zandian knot this week - and then are bidden into the bewitching and bothering machinations of The Judas Contract. This is the big one, as far as Elise is concerned - the high point of the Wolfman/Perez collaboration. Were you reading at the time? Or did you come to the story later (as Dave did), knowing how it all turned out? Was this Terra Incognita or Tarraconensis? Let us know! Credits: Intro music: Debbie Harry - "Comic Books"
Who would've thought Dave and Elise'd miss Zandia? The title's grand arc storytelling takes a temporary back seat this time out to a pair of less-than-compelling orphaned tales. Thunder and Lightning? Triton? These are not villainous names to conjure with. However, your faithful hosts were buoyed up in their banter by the survival of those Wolfman/Perez subplots! Raven's grim struggle for self-mastery! Dick Grayson's search for a new psychotic dad! Wally West's "normie" dreams! And Terra's... whatever she's trying to accomplish. Bonus! More Stan Lee talk, prompted by this excellent Andrew Rilstone piece (suggested by friend of the pod Franz Fuchs!) Audio Credits: Intro music: Debbie Harry - "Comic Books"

It's a mixed bag week on Ben Days of Our Lives, as Elise & Dave slog through the Devolution Pool of Wolfman/Perez's incoherent Doom Patrol/Zahl/Rouge/Brotherhood of Evil/Mento arc finale (what the hell did anyone want with Zandia again?) before finding safe storytelling haven in the pathos-charged pages of issue #16's "Starfire Unleashed". Special bonus: full coverage of the 16-page preview of Roy Thomas and Scott Shaw's "Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew" (starring Roger-make-that-Rodney-Rabbit and Superman).
