The Overlooked Dark Knight: The New Adventures
Another Bat-Flashback...Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk!

The Overlooked Dark Knight: The New Adventures

The Overlooked Dark Knight presents another Bat-Flashback! Recently Andy and Mike have been looking at the original team-ups between Superman and Spider-Man because there are new team-ups between those heroes. Because of this, Mike thought it might be a good idea to re-release the time the guys talked about Batman meeting and, improbably, fighting the Incredible Hulk. Originally presented as episode 61 of the show (released on January 18, 2022) Andy and Mike talked about "The Monster and the Madman". Written by Len Wein with art by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Dick Giordano, the story was initially presented in DC Special Series #27 and was released (according to Mike's Amazing World of Comics) on September 24, 1981. The story has Batman and the Hulk joining forces to deal with their most well known and arch foes. In Batman's case this meant The Joker. For Hulk, this meant...the Shaper of Worlds? Yeah, Andy and Mike were confused about that as well. It's one of the things they talk about. They also discuss the art, the fact that the Bruce Banner in the story was played somewhat like his live action television counterpart, wha the term "donkey work" means, what other Hulk villains could have been used and more. The episode is presented just as it was when it was first unleased on the world, so no recent intros and outros will be included. Below are the front and back cover to this treasury sized special.   It may not seem like it, but Andy and Mike do like feedback even if they are crap at getting to it. The most direct way to do this is to email them, which you can do by directing your thoughts to overlookeddarkknight@gmail.com. You can also leave a comment over on their Facebook page. You can also leave a comment at the new web home of the show, The Bailey Planet. Next Time:  The regular episodes resume with Mike and Andy starting a two-part look at one of the most off-beat Batman villains ever…Man-Bat!

The road to Episode 100 continues by going ALL the way back to the very first episode of the show! Presented just as it was when it came out, without any cuts to make the guys look better! Way back in 2017, Andy and Mike started The Overlooked Dark Knight with a mandate of talking about Batman comics that hardly anyone talks about. They promptly side stepped that mandate by starting things with an exploration of Batman's history. The Untold Legend of the Batman was a three-issue mini-series written by Len Wein with art (initially) by John Byrne and then (eventually) Jim Aparo. The point of the series was to take all of various tellings and re-tellings of Batman's origin, as well as the origins of his friends and foes and and present them as one, clean history. Back when you could do such a thing. After telling you why they started the show and discuss the pros and cons of doing an index podcast, the guys talk about the first issue of the series. That's all Mike remembers of the episode, so hopefully neither he nor Andy said anything that has since become problematic. It may not seem like it, but Andy and Mike do like feedback even if they are crap at getting to it. The most direct way to do this is to email them, which you can do by directing your thoughts to overlookeddarkknight@gmail.com. You can also leave a comment over on their Facebook page. Back in 1972,  Marvel & DC published a crossover that was so secret, even they didn't know they'd published it!Rogue Marvel & DC writers Steve Englehart, Len Wein, & Gerry Conway conspired to have a crossover take place between their three magazines, Amazing Adventures #15 (featuring the X-Men's Beast and drawn by Bob Brown & Marie Severin), Justice League Of America #102 (drawn by Dick Dillin), and The Mighty Thor #207 (drawn by John Buscema)  without telling their respective companies they were doing so.The backdrop for this storyline was Rutland, Vermont's annual Halloween festival, (a real-life event, by the way) which had many of the attendees decked out in superhero garb and Englehart, Wein, & Conway inserted themselves (and their respective wives and girlfriends) as characters who wind up as part of the adventure.  Scooby-Doo style, the gang helps the superheroes vanquish their foes and Marvel and DC saved Halloween...without either of them knowing it.  And it remained that way for years.Hosted by Chris Karam and Brad Page

Welcome to the place where we get to let our geek flags fly and talk about all things geek. Basically a fuzzy guide to life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff. This level of the podcast is a wayback brought to you by a great comic book monster conversation and the realization that this gem fromSeptember 24, 2017 never transitioned to the current batch of episodes. Let's activate the wayback and head to the very first CBM Defenders episode ever. A younger podcast and one hell yeah example of a good time. Enjoy! In blackest day... some comic book movies seem indefensible. But who is out there to try and make light of even the worst comic book movies. Who defends even them? Well constant listener, that's where Blue and I decided it was high time someone heroically tried to do just that. This regular episode of life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff marks the inaugural issue of Blue and Wookiee, The (CBM) Defenders. We start our journey with a super-powered defense of Spawn (1997). Basically the good, the bad, and the ugly about the film where we finish with some positivity and why the movie might be worth watching as a geek and/or comic book movie enthusiast. Not an easy feat but a lot of fun to do. Keep an eye out for bonusodes in the future with this concept in mind. Just because we wanted to flesh out the episode some, we also briefly chatted about the death of comic book legend Len Wein, the inspiration for the planet in Avatar, a brief discussion of Luke Skywalker going dark, the awesome Bladerunner 2049 shorts, and then jokes about Daredevil singing with his feet.Congrats on completing Wayback #9! Thank YOU for being a part of this hilarity! There's a plethora of ways to comment about the show and I look forward to seeing your thoughts, comments, and ideas. "There's always a choice. You're the one who taught me that." After giving us a glimpse of Wolverine's past in "Red Dawn," the stage was set for a full-length exploration in our very next episode. And with that, season two continues its globe-trotting, introspective character-driven features with a solo outing centered on the enigmatic Canadian X-Man. Notably, the extended flashback at the center of "Repo Man" pulls directly from Barry Windsor-Smith's 1991 Marvel Comics Presents serial, "Weapon X." Violent and atmospheric, this adaptation can't help but suffer in comparison due to the necessity of reigning in the comic's harsher elements for Saturday morning consumption. Beyond that, "Weapon X" had a tenuous relationship with the canon from its inception, with the story calling its own authenticity into question at various points. Nevertheless, "Weapon X" was so well-received that it stood for years as the most definitive account of Wolverine's origin. Later revelations and retcons would muddy the waters, but at this point, the animated series is guided by a very solid pedigree. The inclusion of Alpha Flight, while appreciated from a world-building standpoint, doesn't do this episode many favors in terms of clarity. Outside of shedding some light on Wolverine's past, the plot is concerned with linking two seemingly disparate milestones in Logan's history: how his skeleton came to be laced with adamantium, and his involvement with Alpha Flight. The shadowy, unscrupulous, ultra-militaristic Department H serves as the connective tissue, leading to an ultimately unsatisfying conclusion. If Department H was behind or had knowledge of the Weapon X Project, as the episode suggests, then Logan escaped their clutches by the skin of his teeth, only to soon thereafter coincidentally meet James Hudson, who happens to be the leader of Canada's premiere superhero team, and is brought in to join Alpha Flight, under the purview of... Department H. It begs the question as to how Wolverine was allowed to leave the team in the first place. (To say nothing for the fact that he was given the codename of the project that "created" him, a detail which makes little sense as either another absurd coincidence or as an inside joke by Department H... for the audience's benefit only.) Department H's connection to Weapon X seems like it should come as a major revelation, at least to Logan, but the script doesn't attribute any particular significance to this. Still, it's hard to fault the show for filling in logic gaps that the comics themselves had yet to address, given the time and resources allotted. Wolverine's mysterious past represents a corner of X-Men lore that somehow always manages to be more interesting in theory than in execution. Every resolution offered comes with its own set of brand new questions, and in that sense, "Repo Man" can be considered faithful to the spirit of Wolverine's role throughout the '90s. As a cohesive story, it is ultimately unsatisfying, but almost manages to stick the landing by way of momentum and novelty. It remains to be seen how sustainable that approach will be going forward. X-TRA: This episode was written by Wolverine co-creator Len Wein, his first of four such credits over the course of the series. It's a curious fit, given that Wein chronicled only Wolverine's earliest appearances when the character was effectively a blank slate. He therefore has the unenviable task of cobbling together pieces of a mythology which he had no hand in establishing. It's an admirable effort, and a credit to the production for reaching outside their usual pool of television writers.
