It's becoming increasingly clear from my recent chats on the podcast and all the ones that happen in emails or DMs that a substantial part of the glass ceiling for women working in the comics medium centers around the editorial level, but is that accurate and what exactly might specific barriers be? Now I don't know about you, but to me, you ask an expert. So, I reached out to Rachel Pinnelas. Rachel, has been an Assistant Editor at both Marvel and DC, has worked as a journeyperson across the industry spending time at Aftershock, Dynamite, and Serial Box, and was a Mad Cave Talent Search Winner in 2022 who I'm hoping can shed some light on that question we've been exploring throughout the month of March for the Women In Comics Feature on the show. If you want an accurate assessment of where things stand with respect to the representation of women in the comics industry, this is as about as real talk as you are going to find. We also get to chat about Rachel's contribution as a writer to DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis Halloween Special with her Scarcrow centered story set in a theater, and what she's up to in the near future which includes an exciting comics related museum show that hopefully I'll get to talk about in the near future. I Know What You Did Last Crisis From the publisher In the blackest night, when the darkness feels infinite, the very fabric of the universe begins to tear…as every major crisis in DCU history rises once again! These eight chilling tales, set during the events of crises past, serve to warn you, dear reader: when in crisis, watch your back. In the fractured world of Flashpoint, Professor Pyg is stalking Gotham City's nightclubs, sniffing out victims! During Blackest Night, Scarecrow lurks outside a movie theater, recruiting new test subjects to perfect his fear toxin! Even heroes like Nightwing aren't safe when his death might just have the power to reverse the damage of Infinite Crisis! All these, plus new stories from Crisis on Infinite Earths, Millennium, Zero Hour, The Final Night, and Final Crisis are collected in DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis, a deadly new horror anthology coming to haunt you this fall! You're on the Crisis Hotline With Doc, a series that focuses on all the Crisis events in the DC Universe. It is not a review program but rather a reader's guide and introduction to those events that highlights the importance of them to the DC Universe. In this thirteenth installment, Doc and Angus confront a darkness greater than anything they've ever faced in the pages of a Crisis event. This also marks the suspension of the series until DC publishes more Crisis events. Once that happens we will return to review them. We hope you enjoy this episode and thank you for taking this journey with us. Próximo programa: Doctor Who (Especiales 2023 y Temporada 2024).
Beginiing in the aftermath of Infinite Crisis, Brad Meltzer rebooted the Justice League Of America and, along with Dwayne McDuffie and James Robinson brought the team to new heights until the New 52. But what made this JLA run to awesome? Well, this week, Jared has Robert on the show to discuss the entire run from start to finish and discuss what makes this one of the greatest Justice league Of America runs. The Justice League, or Justice League of America, is a group of superheroes appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The team first appeared in The Brave and the Bold 28.
Show Notes provided by Joe Peluso Episode art proved by Richie Garofalo Episode edited by Adrienne Garofalo "Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!--No! It'sanother Superman origin!" Just before the onset of the ill-conceived New 52 Reboot, DC Comics tapped Geoff Johns and Gary Frank to delivera post-Infinite Crisis retelling of The Man of Steel's beginnings.Paying homage to past iterations of the character from across all media, yet delivering fresh and innovative choices to the lore, this pair of creatives crafted a compelling, fun read that reminded fans--new and old--why they adore the skies that Superman soars through. Join your hosts Keith and Joe for another Comics Comics of rediscovery, and reminiscenes. From the doomed planet Krypton, to the wavering wheat fields of Smallville, to the sky scratching spires of Metropolis the guys examine in detail this mini-epic of the world's greatest hero's beginnings. Comparisons to John Byrne and Mark Waid origin epics are discussed. How much did the TV show Smallville inform the choices made by Johns and Frank? Was this a soul-searching emotional story of self-discovery, or a towering tale of inspiration? And what the heck was in those Lex Corp donuts that Rudy Jones scarffed down? All comic book aficanadoes have their favorite characters, and all Superman devotees have a Last Son of Krypton origin they treasure."Superman: Secret Origin" is one of those classic gems. Back to the days when radio brought to life hours of dramatic entertainment to millions of avid American listeners, one phrase was often heard that thrilled both young and old alike--"UP! UP! AND AWAY!"

As long-promised for our 52nd episode! -- What's a "Crisis"? What's a "multiverse"? What's a "52"? These words get thrown around a lot in DC Comics, as well as in off-page discussions of their lore, continuity, and publishing history. In this episode we'll attempt to give a basic Crisis 101 overview for the total newcomer, discussing the 1985 continuity-streamlining event "Crisis on Infinite Earths", and its 2005-06 sequels "Infinite Crisis" and "52"! Mike LOVES these stories, but -- unlike most things covered on The Very Fine Comic Book Podcast -- these are not recommended as "casual reading"! Yes, that Geoff Johns! In this episode, Bandit Joe goes mano a mano with the powerhouse comics writer/executive and film/TV producer for an in-depth discussion of all things geek. The former President and Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment got his start as an intern for legendary Superman director Richard Donner and eventually found his way to DC, where he pitched and wrote Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. The next thing you know, he's co-writing JSA, then fully writing The Flash, and finally doing a bit of Marvel work on the side. Then, with the return of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern: Rebirth series, Geoff's off to the races. He writes the new ongoing Green Lantern title (introducing a spectrum of different Lanterns), Infinite Crisis, and co-writes the weekly 52 series. It's one hit after another until they give him the Big Kahuna job in 2010. Geoff continued to write comics, but also started producing DC's movie slate, including Green Lantern, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman, as well as their TV shows on CW and elsewhere. Geoff's most recent work, the Image miniseries Junkyard Joe (with frequent collaborator Gary Frank) just finished it's run. Hey Girls and Boys, Lads and Lasses, the biggest superhero team on any Earth, The Legion of Super-Heroes, tangles with the villainous Time Trapper as he turns their former ally Superboy against them. It's an ambitious story in the post-Crisis world that serves as a template for DC storytelling to this day. We discuss this all with Legion super-fan and "DC Book of Lists" author Randall Lotowycz!Ep. 94 What If the Time Trapper created a pocket universe to turn Superboy against the Legion of Super-Heroes?With Special Guest author and editor Randall LotowyczEarth of an unknown designation as seen in the Superman & Legion of Super-Heroes crossoverThe Legion of Super-Heroes can seem intimidating with their 20+ members from the traditional members like Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Mon-El to the wacky powered beings like Matter Eating Lad, Shrinking Violet, and Bouncing Boy, which is why we break down this team from the 60s through their major turning point post crisis in the 1980s. We travel through a multi issue arc constructed by major architects Paul Levitz and John Byrne that sees the Legion and Superman battle their old friend Superboy in a pocket universe, all controlled by the mysterious cloaked Time Trapper. We also discuss Time Trapper co-creator and Weird Tales writer Edmund Hamilton and how we are still seeing the reverberations of this story in DC's current multiverse and alternate Earth storytelling on film and TV - including the upcoming Flash film from 2023 and more! Finally, we speculate what's next for the Time Trapper and whether Marvel's Kang stole his onscreen...time. We are joined by special returning guest, author and editor Randall Lotowycz.Follow Randall on his website or on Twitter or Instagram.
