Read transcriptHold onto your utility belts and prepare for maximum overdrive, because this week on Play Comics we're crash-landing straight into the chaotic world of Teen Titans for PS2, Xbox, and GameCube – a game that somehow managed to capture the essence of being a superhero teenager while simultaneously making you question whether saving the world is worth the carpel tunnel. Released in 2006, this beat-'em-up bonanza promised players the chance to live out their fantasies of being part of the most dysfunctional yet lovable superhero team this side of Titans Tower. Joining us for this digital adventure through Jump City's finest is none other than Eilish Pickett from my friendly neighborhood comic shop – a true connoisseur of all things four-color and someone who's probably seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a Cyborg system malfunction. Together, we'll dive deep into whether this particular pixelated punch-fest managed to do justice to the beloved Cartoon Network series that ran from 2003 to 2006, or if it ended up being more disappointing than Beast Boy's attempt at stand-up comedy. From Robin's acrobatic staff-spinning to Raven's dark magic mayhem, this game promised to let you switch between all five Titans in real-time while delivering the kind of cooperative chaos that only comes from trying to coordinate a superhero team where one member transforms into animals and another shoots laser beams from her eyes. Whether you're here for the nostalgic trip back to simpler times when the biggest worry was whether Starfire would accidentally destroy the kitchen again, or you're just curious about how well this adaptation stacked up against the source material, grab your communicator and settle in. This episode is guaranteed to be more entertaining than watching Cyborg try to explain why his breakfast took up half the grocery budget, and definitely more coherent than trying to follow Beast Boy's logic during a heated argument about tofu. Learn such things as: Has there been another rotating team in comics that so ironically across the board has the same lineup? What happens when you just can't find the main villain in the game? How do you limit the power sets of characters who have basically unlimited power sets? And so much more! You can find Eilish on Tumbler @aliceheart247 if you really want to. But mostly just figure out where I live and go to my local comic shop. It's the final Saturday of the month and that means a trip through the multiverse of DC Animation, and the Good Brothers have landed in the fan-favorite world of the Teen Titans as they look at the season one episode "Deep Six" which features the guest starring Aqualad being forced to align with Beast Boy to take down the villainous Trident! Hear the hosts discuss a story written by one of the Teen Titans' founding fathers, visuals-a-plenty showcasing Beast Boy's powers, a voice cast that includes Nerd-culture royalty and a DCAU voice legend that's no stranger to potraying a character who lives under the sea and some memorable music that homages some of classic marine cinema. Moopsy! As Lower Decks is back for the last time, we're looking at three animated Star Trek episodes, specifically ones about strange creatures. The Eye of the Beholder brings us weird dopey-looking elephant slug things who are actually more evolved than humans! A Tribble Called Quest brings us all kinds of mutant tribbles including a bizarre horrible Tribble with a face! Ugh… I Have No Bones, Yet I Must Scream brings us an adorable monster in Moopsy, who may have done one or two things wrong. Moopsy! 00:03:55 What Non-Star Trek Thing We've Been Enjoying: Still Wakes the Deep, Kew Gardens' Halloween Trail 00:09:58 Star Trek: The Animated Series “The Eye of the Beholder” 00:35:37 Star Trek: Prodigy “A Tribble Called Quest” 00:56:03 Star Trek: Lower Decks “I Have No Bones, Yet I Must Scream” Talking points include: Pokémon, which Pokémon wore sunglasses the best? Dave Willis, Still Wakes the Deep, big ups to The Chinese Room, Alien Isolation, Kew Gardens, Merry Xmas Everyone, that song from X-Men Apocalypse or whatever one it was, Charlie tries to remember X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Roger Dean album covers, sand trouts in Dune, that one Flight of the Conchords song where a leg gets eaten, Play-Doh, Morph, vast, desolate landscapes, does The Federation still have Timpsons? You don't put the Scottish in a zoo, space zoos, Equilibrium, at some point Charlie should watch Star Trek, dunking on Chakotay, picking up a story partway through, Peter David's weird universal Majel Barrett thing, X-Men, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, Todd in the Shadows, Miles gets angry at Charlie, the show and himself for having to listen to Oliver Anthony Music, Anthony Michael Hall, self-destructive insubordination at work, bones and teeth aren't the same thing, Charlie's childhood rabbit and the little bunny gulag, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Nolan North, Vegeta & Goku workforce dynamics, trying to stop from having any Big Bang Theory rants, can you tell Charlie's vamping for time because he forgot who wrote I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream? The Spoony Experiment, Awesomed by Comics, Miles was right to be a despairing heap on a men's room floor given the election results. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedant's Corner: While I don't recall Karate Kid being in a zoo in The Legion of Super-Heroes, there was a tragic story about Beast Boy of Lallor dying defending a girl from a zoo animal. The fish that nibble you in those baths are not piranhas. DO NOT have piranhas nibble your feet. Oliver Anthony Music has since given up music, I assume it was pressure from us at Casual Trek. Apologies for the impromptu break, everyone – we're back and we're ready to party! Or, uh, in this case, cringe, because despite being written by the original author of The New Teen Titans comics, this episode… isn't all that great. Of Teen Titans, I mean. WE, your humble podcasters, are in top form. And together we look on in horror as the Titans make one idiotic decision after another. Beast Boy develops an inferiority complex that actively hinders the mission, Starfire and Raven fawn over a boy and don't do much else, and our villain is in MULTIPLE PLACES AT ONCE? HOW CAN THAT BE??? One way or another, we hope we can make this one more bearable for you. (Also, correction – the largest fungus in North America does not unfortunately cover the Pacific Northwest. Only about four miles of it. Sorry to disappoint.) === Send us your feedback at supernucleargroup@gmail.com ! Or you can support us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/supernucleargroup   OR! Kyle selects Dr. Doom's electricity, Wolverine's healing ability, Invincible's strength, and Beast Boy's ability to turn into animals. The hosts discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their chosen powers. In this episode, the hosts discuss the powers and abilities of various characters and engage in a playful debate about who would win in a battle. They explore the concept of shape-shifting and its potential advantages in combat. The conversation then shifts to strategies and tactics, with a focus on controlling the weather and using unconventional villain tactics. The hosts wrap up the episode by announcing the winner of a previous bracket competition and reflecting on the experience. In everyone's favorite Season 1 episode, Raven is subjected to too many puns and goes grimdark, prompting Beast Boy and Cyborg to venture into the Hot Topic dimension to save her. While there, they encounter not one Raven, but several! Including Finger Guns Raven, a staple of forum avatars in the mid-noughties, but not including Lust Raven, who DOES exist - they saved her for the tie-in comics. Cyborg and Beast Boy help her fight her dad, who may or may not qualify as an orc (Ben has opinions), they all grow closer for it, and meanwhile Starfire and Robin... watch TV. This episode carries a content warning for a discussion of rape in the DC comics universe between the 9:00-10:30 time stamps. It's come to our attention that we were wrong about the details, but the broad strokes are correct. We invite Tom Taylor onto the show this week to discuss all the tasty relationship dynamics he's been exploring with the Titans ongoing series and why it's taken decades for these twenty-something superheroes to nab their first major DC Comics event book, Titans: Beast World. For too long, the world has relied on Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, but their decrepit Boomer attitudes won't save the day this time. Everyone, please shut up and listen to Beast Boy. The Titans may no longer be teenagers, but they still struggle with the generational divide. Amanda Waller carries no weapon deadlier than her rapid-fire eye rolls. And Bruce Wayne isn't much better with his brutal absolutes and dismissive hand gestures. Is this generational battle essential to the Titans concept? Can they ever pull themselves out of the Justice League's shadow? These questions beat at the heart of our conversation with Tom Taylor, and it was a delight to explore what makes these unique DC characters so compelling. The Necrostar is a gnarly concept to tangle with, but its threat is secondary to how it affects the internal life of our beloved Titans. Titans: Beast World #1 hits shops on November 28th. Issue five of the Titans ongoing just dropped this week. Stay abreast of all things Tom Taylor by following his Twitter and Instagram. Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

We take on the Titanous daughter of Trigon, RAVEN! How good is Anthony's Tara Strong impression? How do you handle an empath? All this and more in our season finale - listen now! Intro Patrons get an extra episode We'll also do a watch party of the Ryan Reynolds movie Unwittingly this is season finale January is Lantern month Background (5:09) Raven created by Marv Wolfman & George Perez in DC Comics Presents #26 (October 1980) Raven is the daughter of the demon Trigon and a human woman, Angela Roth - Raven was raised in Azarath to control her emotions by monks so she could control her demonic powers, which include astral projection, teleportation, and emotional manipulation When she learned Trigon was planning to invade Earth, she first approached the Justice League for assistance, but when they refused, she reformed the Titans as the New Teen Titans to battle Trigon, who they imprisoned in an alternate dimension When Trigon inevitably escaped, he corrupted Raven and took her over - the Titans killed her, allowing the souls of Azarath to possess her body and kill Trigon, after which she was resurrected, free of his control Became Dark Raven after she was possessed by her evil conscience, and implanted her good soul in Starfire (although she said she implanted a seed of Trigon) - the evil Raven then attempted to destroy Starfire, but was defeated by the Titans, and her good soul was placed in a new body She later enrolled in a high school under the name Rachel Roth, and dated Beast Boy for a while She broke up with Beast Boy and left the team, although the two were unrelated Discovered three half-brothers, children Trigon had with other mothers, who tried to use her to access their father's realm - Raven used her powers to make her brothers so greedy they stole Trigon's power New 52 - her origin is practically similar, but initially she was operating as a double agent for Trigon under his control During a battle with the Crime Syndicate, Raven was sent several thousand years into the past, where she used her powers to teleport herself and the Titans forward to the future, before returning to the present - all the chronal manipulation severed Trigon's connection to her She and several other heroes were kidnapped by Damian Wayne, who was putting a team together to battle Ra's al Ghul She and the other Titans create a school to train new students Issues - Her heart is not her own (9:15) Emotional repression Seemingly cannot escape her father's manipulation & control Empath power leaves her vulnerable to emotions of those around her Break (36:39) Plugs for Scotch N Sports, Popcorn Psychology, and Meredith Finch Treatment (37:50) In-universe -  Out of universe -  Skit (47:44) Hello Raven, I'm Dr. Issues. -Hello. *longest pause that almost makes listener think there's something wrong with the episode* Umm, what can I do for you? -Well, we can talk about…stuff. I guess. Ooooooookay, such as… -I don't know. *another awkward pause, but not as long as the first* Feel free to talk about whatever you want. I'm not used to digging this hard to start a conversation when the person booked the first session themselves. -I got a recommendation. I'm flattered *pause* Is there something holding you back? -*sigh* I was trying to avoid using this *Azarath Metrion Zinthos* Aaaah, that's better. You should be easier to talk to now.  What did you do? -I had to find a way to let a part of myself out. But I needed a willing vessel. You work just fine. I'm a good listener, not an empty vessel. -I didn't say “empty,” just willing. You're an empath. I can tell. Then what is it that I'm supposed to carry? -Oh I don't know…the weight of soul crushing guilt that you can never do anything to make your problems go away, or stop those that created you from ruining your life, or trying to find someone that takes you seriously for more than a fling, or…grrr…even when I throw it away I can still feel it eating at me.  I can tell *sound of actual biting* ow! What the hell? What bit me? -I'm not using metaphors. You…you put your emotions into me? They physically…I don't know how to describe this. -I wouldn't try to put words to it. They hate that. It's too close to an amateur trying to learn a new spell on the fly. Then why do this at all? -Respite, mostly. I have a tough burden. 99.9% of the time, I keep myself reigned in. But that 0.1%...oh, when that gets out, lets loose…let's just say NOBODY has ever liked the consequences.  Well, I'm certainly not liking them myself! What do you do to mature them? -*pause* There's no maturation process. You have to neutralize them. And that's what you've been doing your whole life. -Yes. Well, when I'm in control, that's what I do. What happens specifically when you're not in control? -I can't answer that. Can't, or won't -Can't because my memories become warped and it's usually due to someone else taking control. One time it's a part of myself. Another time, it's someone else. All I know is, when it gets to that point, pain and suffering follows. Then I have to do damage control and all I want to do is be left alone. Does that make sense? I have to say yes…mainly because as I THINK you make sense, I now FEEL like you make seeeenOHGOD *thump sound as Doc drops on the floor* spoke too soon. Something you said…or I said…you don't like. -*legitimately worried* That's not good. When you reach a certain threshold, the part of myself I gave to you should automatically come back to me. *magical sound effect, alduron en lenthranall* it's stuck. How is that possible? Remember how you said willing vessel? Well…I think the best I can explain it is, I take my work home with me sometimes. -You can't hold onto other people's emotions! That's ridiculous!  *angry* Well it's not so literal 99.9% of the time! -*sigh* Ugh, FINE! *alduron en lenthranall, alduron en lenthranall* *now in a true panic* WHY ARE YOU STILL HOLDING ON? *grunting* I need to ask a few more questions -Are you joking right now? Surprisingly no. Tell me, what was so wrong with my answer before? -I didn't believe you. So you don't trust me? -I just met you. And yet you made me carry a burden that has weighed on you since you were born? There's a huge contradiction. -I was…I was trying something different. Dark arts, meditation, isolation, fighting…that only gets me so far. I can't lean on teammates without some serious backlash. Even the ones I love…loved…still love? Anyway, the point is, I know the definition of insanity, and I'm tired of doing the same thing over and over again. But I didn't expect THIS. You care too much, even though I'm a stranger…and it scares me. Thank you. *sound of air rushing by* whoa! That was exhilarating! What did you do now? -Nothing…wait…it's back…to me…it came back? WILLINGLY came back? But not the same. I'M not the same. Or part of me…I don't really understand myself. Is this you? No, you're you. That's a relief. -I'll need to explore this with other parts of myself. This is probably temporary…whatever it is…but You must be worth it if I didn't even have to tell you about that time my father got inside me Hewhatnow? -*rapid* Nothing gotta go and don't worry about nightmares they go away quickly  Wait just a -*interrupting, with magic sound effect* here's a token to ward off any demons, take one and call me in the morning But I'm the -*interrupting again* And for your own safety please talk to someone so you don't burn yourself out. *door slams* Did she really say something about her dad…*shudder*  Ending (53:57) Recommended reading: New Teen Titans (Wolfman/Perez run) Next episodes: January is Lantern month Plugs for social References:   Apple Podcasts: here Google Play: here Stitcher: here TuneIn: here iHeartRadio: here Twitter Facebook TikTok  Patreon TeePublic Discord

On a very special New York Comic Con special episode of GateCrashers, Dan got the chance to chat with the Titans. Yes, you read that right. Dan spoke with a few members of the cast of the HBO Max show Titans which is the adaptation of multiple versions of the Teen Titans. With GateCrashers starting as a DC Comics-centric brand, this was a very surreal moment for Dan. Getting to shake the hands of Nightwing, Superboy, and Beast Boy was not something he ever thought he would get to do nor do many other people get that same chance. Check out our Titans Interview episode anywhere you download podcasts as we chat about how far the actors have come and season 4 in general.
