Some attributes of the paranormal mind are dismissed as nonsense, but what can an exploration of pseudoscientific phenomena tell us about accepted scientific and cultural thought? In Parascientific Revolutions: The Science and Culture of the Paranormal, Derek Lee traces the evolution of psi epistemologies and uncovers how these ideas have migrated into scientific fields such as quantum physics and neurology, as well as diverse literary genres including science fiction, ethnic literature, and even government training manuals. Here, Lee is joined in conversation with Alicia Puglionesi.Derek Lee is author of Parascientific Revolutions: The Science and Culture of the Paranormal and assistant professor of literature at Wake Forest University.Alicia Puglionesi is a lecturer in the medicine, science, and humanities program at Johns Hopkins University and is author of Common Phantoms and In Whose Ruins: Power, Possession, and the Landscapes of American Empire and Common Phantoms: An American History of Psychic Science.REFERENCES:Society for Psychical ResearchRoger LuckhurstStargate ProjectIngo SwannStar Fire / Ingo SwannPsitronAdrian DobbsPhilip K. DickWilliam Butler YeatsJoseph E. UscinskiPraise for the book:“Derek Lee engages the ‘pseudoscience' moniker, that ultimate rhetorical insult, and seeks to replace it with a more accurate ‘parascience'—a place where science and that which is other than science meet and express themselves in literally global pathways as distinct as pulp and science fiction, environmental thought, Asian and Indigenous ways of knowing, U.S. secret espionage, and ethnic fiction. Lee shows all of this with consummate skill and rigor, pushing us beyond our present impasses. This thing is not going away. This is a revolution.”—Jeffrey J. Kripal, author of How to Think Impossibly“Derek Lee delves into the rich history of the paranormal to instigate a captivating discussion of its influence on literature and science into the twenty-first century through SF and ethnic fictions with the unproven concepts of parascience—precognition, telekinesis, clairvoyance, spectral communication, and telepathy. A classic in the making!”—Isiah Lavender III, author of Afrofuturism RisingParascientific Revolutions: The Science and Culture of the Paranormal by Derek Lee is available from University of Minnesota Press. In this celestial and grounded conversation with astrocartographer and Reiki Master Kylene Alvich, we dive into astrocartography — a mystical-meets-practical tool for discovering where on Earth you are most supported, challenged, or activated.Together, we explore how planetary lines shape your personal evolution, how travel becomes a soul remembrance, and how intentional movement through sacred sites not only awakens your gifts, but heals the Earth's crystalline grid in turn. From Pluto transformations to Venusian bliss, Kylene shares how to read your map, what makes a place feel “off,” and how to turn every journey into an oracular experience of reconnection. What you'll take away from this episode:
In this solo episode, I take you on a soul-infused journey to Kos Island, birthplace of Hippocrates and one of the oldest healing sanctuaries in the Western world. This Aegean sanctuary is more than a historical landmark—it holds the serpent codes of regeneration, the dream medicine of the Asklepeion, and the original template of healing as a sacred act of soul alignment. Together we explore the energy, symbolism, and lineage of the Asclepius cult, serpent medicine, and the foundational principles of holistic healing that still resonate today.Topics we explore:

Read transcriptHold onto your utility belts and prepare for maximum overdrive, because this week on Play Comics we're crash-landing straight into the chaotic world of Teen Titans for PS2, Xbox, and GameCube – a game that somehow managed to capture the essence of being a superhero teenager while simultaneously making you question whether saving the world is worth the carpel tunnel. Released in 2006, this beat-'em-up bonanza promised players the chance to live out their fantasies of being part of the most dysfunctional yet lovable superhero team this side of Titans Tower. Joining us for this digital adventure through Jump City's finest is none other than Eilish Pickett from my friendly neighborhood comic shop – a true connoisseur of all things four-color and someone who's probably seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a Cyborg system malfunction. Together, we'll dive deep into whether this particular pixelated punch-fest managed to do justice to the beloved Cartoon Network series that ran from 2003 to 2006, or if it ended up being more disappointing than Beast Boy's attempt at stand-up comedy. From Robin's acrobatic staff-spinning to Raven's dark magic mayhem, this game promised to let you switch between all five Titans in real-time while delivering the kind of cooperative chaos that only comes from trying to coordinate a superhero team where one member transforms into animals and another shoots laser beams from her eyes. Whether you're here for the nostalgic trip back to simpler times when the biggest worry was whether Starfire would accidentally destroy the kitchen again, or you're just curious about how well this adaptation stacked up against the source material, grab your communicator and settle in. This episode is guaranteed to be more entertaining than watching Cyborg try to explain why his breakfast took up half the grocery budget, and definitely more coherent than trying to follow Beast Boy's logic during a heated argument about tofu. Learn such things as: Has there been another rotating team in comics that so ironically across the board has the same lineup? What happens when you just can't find the main villain in the game? How do you limit the power sets of characters who have basically unlimited power sets? And so much more! You can find Eilish on Tumbler @aliceheart247 if you really want to. But mostly just figure out where I live and go to my local comic shop. Some Black men stand out for their sense of style - Sammy Davis Jr., Prince, Colman Domingo. They're all part of a deep historical culture of Black dandyism, where fashion is rooted in resistance and used to counter stereotypes. This year's Met Gala theme and an ongoing exhibition titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” highlight Black dandyism. Host Racquel Williams talks with two Philly fashion experts about the dandy movement, the runway looks, and some tips for men who want to elevate their own style - Prajjé Oscar Jean-Baptiste, a designer and professor at Philly area colleges including Thomas Jefferson University, and Jamel Workman, founder of Dandy Headdress. Then, on Shara in the City, we hop on board a very special trolley to inspire and empower women. The Deeply Rooted Trolley Tour, organized by Harriett's Bookshop and hosted by Starfire, visits women-owned businesses across the city. Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast
This episode marks the HALFWAY point in the original Classic Marvel Star Wars series that ran from 1977-1986! We break down Issue 54: “STARFIRE RISING” from September 1981, which serves as a continuation of repurposed JOHN CARTER, WARLORD OF MARS artwork created for the cancelled comic series. Not wanting to waste unused artwork which was done by the same artists as the Star Wars series, Chris Claremont was brought in to write a new Star Wars story based on that existing art. Then Walter Simonson adapted art to fit these issues 53 and 54, and Viola you have new Star Wars! We are not sure why this issue is called STARFIRE RISING, but it should have been called CRUSH ON LEIA, since the story revolves around Aron Peacebringer (John Carter) having an existential crisis over his adulterous thoughts on Princess Leia. You can tell the moment the art switches from repurposed John Carter to Star Wars towards the end of the issue. Please enjoy. Today in Star Wars History - May 29, 2019 After a thirty-three-year hiatus, Marvel Comics continues their classic Star Wars series with the release of issue #108 - Forever Crimson. We covered this issue in episode 495 since it was a direct continuation of issue #50: Crimson Forever which came out in 1981. Forever Crimson, published in celebration of Marvel's 80th anniversary, encompasses five short stories that feature Jaxxon, Amaiza Foxtrain, and the droid-hating Valance the Hunter. #54 “STARFIRE RISING" Release Date: September 22, 1981 Writer: Chris Claremont Artwork: Walt Simonson, Carmine Infantino Coloring: Glynis Wein Cover Art: Walt Simonson Imperial General Sk'ar captures Aron Peacebringer and Princess Leia. As the two heroes struggle against their bonds, Aron discovers that his friend Delois, has turned traitor and joined forces with Sk'ar. Now Delois and Skar plan to bomb Aron's government - The Calian Confederacy. When all seems lost, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and Aron's best friend Kéral Longknife arrive to fight the Imperials. Leia finds Sk'ar's anti-matter bomb and begins defusing it, but will she diffuse it in time or will this world be wiped out just like Alderaan? In this solo episode, we journey to the Aegean island of Rhodes — once called Ophiussa, the serpent isle — to explore its forgotten role in anchoring Starfire Energy, housing Grail codes, and guarding the womb of Gaia's Solar Logos. From the Telchines to the Knights of St. John, from the fiery mountain of Tsambika to the cave temple of Lindos, this is a story written not in history books, but in soul memory and cosmic geometry.⚜️
It was almost exactly 10 years ago that the Portland Timbers visited Starfire Stadium for what would ultimately be known as the Red Card Wedding. With the Timbers returning to Starfire on Tuesday, now seems like a good time to re-release this episode that was first recorded in 2017.Back then, Jeremiah teamed up with former SB Nation colleague Richard Farley and Soccer Made in PDX's Chris Rifer to record and produce this episode. It features such notable voices as Brad Evans, Lamar Neagle, Andy Rose, Ross Fletcher, Caleb Porter, Jack Jewsbury and Nat Borchers as well as Jeff Hosking, who was an assistant ref in the game. For the uninitiated, this was among the more surreal games in Sounders history. It most famous featured Clint Dempsey getting ejected and literally ripping up the referee's notebook, but it also featured two other red cards (which combined with Obafemi Martins' injury forced the Sounders to finish the game with seven players).Even before that, the match was shaping up as a classic with two heated rivals trading blows in a match that went to overtime. We examine the case of a F-94 Starfire crew who encountered a strange light near Goose Bay in May 1953, one which left them standing as it rapidly avoided their attempts to intercept it. Another - possibly the same object - was observed some hours later by the crew of a Maritime Central Airways airliner 130 miles south-west of Goose Bay.Subscribe to Bite-Sized UFOs on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bitesizedufosBook Ryan on CAMEO at: https://bit.ly/3kwz3DOPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/somewhereskiesByMeACoffee: http://www.buymeacoffee.com/UFxzyzHOaQPayPal: Sprague51@hotmail.comDiscord: https://discord.gg/NTkmuwyB4FBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ryansprague.bsky.socialTwitter: https://twitter.com/SomewhereSkiesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/somewhereskiespod/Order Ryan's new book: https://a.co/d/4KNQnM4Order Ryan's older book: https://amzn.to/3PmydYCStore: http://tee.pub/lic/ULZAy7IY12URead Ryan's articles at: https://medium.com/@ryan-sprague51Opening Theme Song by SeptembryoCopyright © 2025 Ryan Sprague. After working through most of the Teen Titans, author Kami Garcia and artist Gabriel Picolo have finally reached the Tamaranean superhero, Starfire. Their latest collaboration finds Kori struggling to find her place amongst her peers while her sister Kira thrives in the environment. Kori strives for the stars above, but feels trapped in her Summer job and her body, especially after her Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) diagnosis. On this week's podcast, we chat with bestselling author Kami Garcia about Teen Titans: Starfire, how she found herself in the character, and why that allowed her to embrace her past and present self. Famously, Garcia began her writing career as a dare from her students, picking up the pen and proving to them (and herself) that she could tell a darn good story. We discuss the details of that dare, how her teaching life factors into her writing life, and why young adult fiction often becomes necessary all-ages fiction. Teen Titans: Starfire is now available wherever good comics are sold. You should follow Kami Garcia on Instagram, Bluesky, and her website. However, before we dive into our Teen Titans conversations, we discuss the impending holiday season and the gift-giving stress that comes with it. We believe wholeheartedly that there is a comic for everyone in your life, and the trick is figuring out what that comic is. In an effort to help you and us, we've assembled our annual Comic Book Holiday Gift Guide. We discuss our philosophy around comic book gift-giving and a few of our favorite items from the list. Sabanto: https://sabantoag.com/FoA 241: From Drives to Driverless with Craig Rupp of SabantoI'm really glad to get Craig Rupp back on the show today. Some of you might remember his interview on episode 241, where Craig shared the incredible journey of building 640 Labs which he sold to the Climate Corp and became the FieldView Drive. At that time, we also talked about his newest venture, Sabanto, which is bringing autonomy to agriculture. Since that episode over three years ago, Craig and the team at Sabanto have evolved their offering from autonomy as a service to a kit that allows dealers and farmers to convert the equipment they already have to include autonomous capabilities. Along with that, they offer a service for remote operating and monitoring, which kind of blows my mind. Craig is hiring a team of remote tractor drivers to monitor several autonomous tractors at once, and we'll talk a lot about that in today's episode. Sabanto has also found an interesting niche in sod farmers. They work with farmers across basically all crops, but the amount of passes these sod farmers have to make in a given year, makes an offering like Sabanto has really compelling. This is also an episode about the evolution of on-farm autonomy and what the future might look like as adoption continues to grow. For a refresher on Craig's bio: Raised on a farm in Iowa, Craig Rupp started his career in 1988 as a hardware engineer at Motorola, designing and developing the first GSM and Iridium mobile stations and John Deere in 2002, developing the Starfire receiver and Greenstar display. In 2012, Craig founded 640 Labs, envisioning a simple iPad as a data collection and monitoring device for agriculture. Acquired by Monsanto in 2014, he made his FieldView Drive one of the most ubiquitous and low-cost data collection devices in agriculture. In 2018, Craig founded Sabanto, a company that provides autonomous solutions for agriculture. He was the first to autonomously plant a farmer's field in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, and Indiana.I really enjoy whenever I get a chance to talk to Craig, his intelligence and real world experience comes through in the wisdom that he shares.
