Nobody wants to hear this - if you want to be more joyful, you need to meditate. You need to hear all the stuff your brain comes up with and you need to pick the flowers among the weeds. To feel good, you need to think good thoughts. To think good thoughts, you need to know what you're thinking about first and then decide what to pay attention to. To know what you're thinking about, you need to meditate. It doesn't matter how you meditate. As long as you have space to hear your thoughts without reacting to them. Skip self-love for now and maybe just working on not kicking the shit out of yourself? You don't deserve the way you treat yourself. And the world isn't actually as craptastic as you imagine it is. Focusing on the positive (yes, that all song) isn't just for weirdos in caftans at fancy retreats. It's what you need to do if you want to go from sad to happy. From muddling through to joyful abandon. Nothing else changes until you change. And you don't change overnight. Patience, My Friend. Sometimes good things take time, and this is one of those times. So take a deep breath and think the most truthful happy thought you can. Look at pretty things. Find the joy and the gratitude where you are. It gets better if you let it. Let's start this conversation off by saying - I have a chronic illness - so when I talk about the ways people use illness as an excuse to not do things - I'm not talking out of my ass. I'm talking about my own personal experience and what I've heard from others. I'm also not delegitimatizing the very real symptoms and burdens of any illness. Your pain is real. Your fatigue is real. Your anxiety/depression is real. Your struggles are real. AND... You might find that you've decided that your illness or some perceived failing you have means that you can't do things that you want to do. You might also find that your illness has given you some benefits, gotten you off the hook. Even if you don't have any medical condition (physical/mental) - you could still be using your limiting beliefs about yourself to keep you from fully living the life you want. If you don't know the real reason, you may find yourself on the hamster wheel of weight loss and weight gain, and feel like a bit of a failure each time the numbers on the scale go up. Digging deep and being honest, before you load your grocery bag up with veggies and buy that gym membership, will help you achieve your goals.
