Welcome to a somewhat experimental episode of the Resident Evil Podcast where the team looks back specifically at the original PSX trilogy and the influences in horror gaming that our beloved title drew from. This means an examination of some older horror titles that shaped the industry before Biohazard including Sweet Home, Alone in the Dark and Clock Tower with an analysis on what aspects worked to bring the scares in a low polygon era. We then discuss why Resident Evil was so special and despite perhaps not being the first "survival horror" title (albeit the game that coined the phrased), the OG trilogy in particular became the benchmark in jump scares, tension and cinematic gaming. The conversation then switches to the games that were influenced by Resident Evil - and boy are there many! From the obvious like Dino Crisis and Silent Hill, but also some obscure titles like Deep Fear and Run Like Hell that have really flown under the radar! In the news we also share our thoughts on the recent fan film - The Keeper's Diary and theBatman reveals the creation process for his recent REmake mythology!  Musical credit to WackySB for the incredible remixed save room themes (https://tinyurl.com/ye2acphr) Enjoy!

Styx is approaching the height of their popularity and a bit of a turning point when they released their ninth studio album, Cornerstone.  Keyboardist and vocalist Dennis DeYoung, and lead guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw take the lion's share of the songwriting duites, with one or both developing all tracks save one.  The lead vocalist duties also alternate between DeYoung and Shaw, again with the sole exception being a song written and sung by guitarist James "JY" Young. This album finds the group shifting from a more prog rock sound to a pop rock orientation.  This transition would create a commercial success, with Cornerstone becoming the groups first top 5 album on the US charts - peaking at number 2.  The album would produce the groups first and only number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the power ballad "Babe."  It would also be a critical success, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.  Not bad for a self-produced album. The successes, however would be tempered with the first fractures appearing between the group's primary singers and songwriters.  Dennis DeYoung wanted to see the group move in a more pop direction, while Tommy Shaw preferred the rock orientation of previous albums.  James Young sided with Shaw in this dispute.  It would eventually cause a rift in the band in the mid-80's, with Shaw and DeYoung splitting up.Friend of the show Steve Hardin presents this classic rock and pop sensation in today's podcast. Borrowed TimeThe third single from the album was the lead track to side 2.  The song is a political one, portraying a United States in trouble, but oblivious to its decline.  DeYoung and Shaw co-wrote this song, and Dennis DeYoung takes lead vocal duties on this high energy track.Boat on the RiverThis more folk-oriented tune was a charting single in the UK and hit number 5 on the German charts, but was not released as a single in the US.  Tommy Shaw wrote and sings lead on this track, as well as playing mandolin.  It began as an experiment when Shaw first acquired a mandolin, but the band thought it sounded good enough to make it on the album. Why MeThe second single was a compromise choice.  Originally DeYoung wanted the power ballad "First Time" to be released as the second single, but when Tommy Shaw objected so strenuously to releasing two ballads in a row that he threated to leave the band over it, "Why Me" became the single.  Also written and sung by DeYoung, it is about feeling depressed even in the midst of success.  BabeThe band's sole number 1 single is a ballad about having to leave the one you love for a period of time.  Dennis DeYoung wrote it as a birthday present for his wife Suzanne.  Despite its success, it was not originally intended to appear on the album.  Tommy Shaw and James Young convinced DeYoung to put it on the album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Rawhide by the Blues BrothersThe band performs behind a protective fence in a country bar in one scene, and this is the single song from the Country AND Western genre they can play. STAFF PICKS:Mystery Train by UFOWayne launches the staff picks with a cover of a song originally recorded by Junior Parker in 1953.  UFO were an English rock band originally formed in 1968.  This song is off their eighth studio album which was produced by George Martin of Beatles fame. Love Stinks by the J. Geils BandLynch's staff pick is a description of a love triangle in which no one gets what they want.  Lead Singer Peter Wolf was married to actress Faye Dunaway at the time, and was headed towards a divorce which may have inspired the lyrics.  Many will remember this song from Adam Sandler's performance in "The Wedding Singer."Even It Up by HeartRob brings us the first single from Heart's fifth studio album, "Bebe le Strange."  It features the Tower of Power horn section in the instrumentation.  The lyrics call for reciprocity in a relationship, and also a subtle rant against the obstacles women face in the rock world.Run Like Hell by Pink FloydSteve Hardin wraps up the staff picks with a song written by David Gilmour and Roger Waters.  The song is used in the film "The Wall" to depict rock anti-hero Pink as a fascist dictator turning the audience into a lynch mob.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Seduction by Giorgio MoroderThis instrumental love theme from the movie "American Gigolo" was on the charts at the time. At the age of twenty-two, Nadine's life took an unexpected turn when she married Jordan Belfort, the infamous stockbroker immortalized in the Hollywood hit "The Wolf of Wall Street." Initially, their union seemed like a modern-day fairytale, but a dark reality began to unfold beneath the surface. As their bond tightened, Jordan's façade crumbled, revealing a complex web of infidelity, narcissistic abuse, insatiable greed, and a devastating drug addiction that transformed Nadine's dream into a harrowing nightmare. The turmoil of this traumatic relationship catalyzed Nadine's remarkable journey. Fueled by her determination to help others facing similar struggles, she pursued a path of healing and transformation. She received her master's degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in somatic psychotherapy, Dr. Nae established a thriving private practice. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth welcomes back trauma bond expert and author Nadine Macaluso, LMFT, Ph.D., to introduce her latest book, Run Like Hell, A Therapist's Guide To Recognizing, Escaping, Healing From Trauma Bonds. The pair also discuss the markers of a trauma-bonded relationship and how to use NARM to address the complex PTSD that routinely develops as a result of these abusive unions.  About Nadine Macaluso: At age twenty-two, Nadine Macaluso married Jordan Belfort, the nefarious stockbroker portrayed in the Hollywood blockbuster “The Wolf of Wall Street”. Their marriage began as a fairytale, but once they were bonded, Jordan's “mask” began to slip, and acts of infidelity, narcissistic abuse, insatiable greed, and uncontrollable drug addiction became Nadine's nightmare. The horrific relationship inspired Nadine to become a psychotherapist specializing in narcissistic abuse, trauma bonds, and Complex-PTSD. Her private practice quickly flooded with clients, predominantly women, recounting an all-too-familiar story of abuse with a pathological partner. Perhaps this scenario resonates with you. In Run Like Hell, Nadine brings you her personal experience and years of expertise to explain the mental health of the narcissistic pathological lover, the traits of people who are the perfect “victims” of these PLs, how you can leave a trauma bond safely, and how you can heal. Change your present and seize your exceptional future by escaping your painful trauma bond. That's what Dr. Nae (Nadine Macaluso) did and her new book. Run Like Hell: A Therapist's Guide To Recognizing, Escaping, And Healing From Trauma Bonds recounts her story and is out now. At 22, Nadine married Jordan Belfort, infamously known as the Wolf of Wall Street. Their eight-year marriage began as a fairytale, filled with expensive gifts and lavish parties. But once they were bonded, Jordan's ‘mask' began to slip and acts of control, infidelity, narcissistic abuse, insatiable greed, and uncontrollable drug addiction became Nadine's nightmare. Nadine believed that her love could save him, so she remained trauma-bonded until the pain of their relationship became too much to bear.  She left Belfort and was inspired to become a psychotherapist. It would be decades before she realized her story resembled thousands of other women's relational experiences. She now specializes in narcissistic abuse, trauma bonds, and complex PTSD and serves many women in an all-too-familiar story of abuse with a pathological partner.  Sara and Nadine talk about some of their similar experiences, what Nadine went through and the symptoms of intermittent abuse, power imbalance and fear that actually trauma bond you more to the person. They also want to be sure women do not take on the stereo - typical labels of Learned Helplessness and other terms that seem to put “blame” on the women. Our Christmas Rabbit Hole Episodes rank among the highest. This special episode features classic rock songs and theme songs which feature a spooky theme.  We hope you enjoy this first “Halloween” special from What The Riff?!?Theme from the television series “The Walking Dead”  This post-apocalyptic zombie series ran for 11 seasons, from 2010 until 2022.  It was based on a comic book of the same name and sparked multiple spin-offs.  The minor key and strings set the mood well for this horror series.Theme from the television series “The Munsters”  A television classic that surprisingly only ran for two seasons, from 1964 until 1966, in black-and-white.  Some say the ratings drop that resulted in cancellation of the show was due to competition from "Batman."Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd  This track from “The Wall” features music from David Gilmour and lyrics from Roger Waters, the last collaboration to date from these two.  The song represents the turn to violence in the life of Pink as he orders his thugs to attack the “riff-raff.”Bark at the Moon by Ozzy Osbourne  The first single from the 1983 album of the same name tells of a creature who terrorized a town, was killed, and then returns from the dead.  The song featured the first Ozzy music video.Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath  The title track to the 1980 album of the same name features new front man Ronnie James Dio on vocals, taking over for Ozzy Osbourne in the band.  Dio is also the source of the lyrics for the track.Spirits in the Material World by the Police  Sting wrote this opening track to the Police October 1981 album “Ghost in the Machine.”  It is a psychological and philosophical piece, discussing man's existence and the failure of the institutions around him. Witchy Woman by the Eagles  One of the early Eagles songs, this track was the only song on the debut album for which Don Henley would have a writing credit.  The inspiration was an amalgam of women Henley had met, but the primary inspiration was Zelda Fitzgerald, the muse and wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald.Hells Bells by AC/DC  The lead-off track to the album “Back in Black” starts with the tolling of a 2,000 pound bronze bell.  Today it is used in multiple sports events, as well as being a fantastic Halloween song.Friend of the Devil by the Grateful Dead  This folk rock track appeared on the Dead's fifth studio album, “American Beauty,” from 1970.  It is one of the most covered Dead songs in their catalog.    Feed My Frankenstein by Alice Cooper  While this song was originally recorded by British group Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, it is more famous in its cover version which Cooper performed in a cameo in the movie “Wayne's World.”  The cover also has guest appearances itself, including Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Nikki Sixx, and Elvira. Superstition by Stevie Wonder  This funky song came out in October 1972 and hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.  Wonder chronicles a number of superstitions in the lyrics, and warns against the negative effects of being superstitious. Thriller by Michael Jackson  No Halloween song list would be complete without the seventh single from Michael Jackson's sixth studio album of the same name.  Thriller was not originally intended to be a single, but became that in an attempt to boost the album sales.  The video would be scarily expensive, and would be called "the most famous music video of all time" by the Library of Congress.  The tactic worked, as album sales doubled after Thriller's release as a single.

Episode 8 aired on 24 February 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio, earlier that day Vladimir Putins troops marched into Ukraine.  The Doomsday clock is set at 100 seconds to midnight, 20 seconds worse than Iron Maidens apocalyptic 2 Minutes to Midnight.  It was difficult to put it to the back of mind.  We kicked off with Run Like Hell, off Pink Floyd's masterpiece the Wall.  From there we hit Metallica's Devils Dance.  It was impossible not to see the links to the world situation and song played, most of these songs were on the playlist days before this situation happened. The episode ended up a bit different, overall probably a heavier show than normal. No UK Punk!, that's a first, no Aussie, no Judas Priest.  In its place we checked out heavier fare like BUllet for my Valentine, Gojira, In This Moment, Megadeth and Helloween.  The highlight was two tracks for new SA bands, Code 106 with Eradicate and Diverted Disorder with DEstroyed by Fate.  Both tracks are great and its clear SA rock / metal is in a good place.  Both bands are on iTunes, check it out.  I finally figured out a way to overcome technical difficulties and bring you more from the latest Iron Maiden album Senjutsu.  The end of the show is pretty special, I played out with Kreator 'World War Now' not because I think there is one coming but because its a great anti-war song and deserves to be played.  The live show fades to black at exactly 22h00 for the next show on Rebel Rock, the song however finishes on the podcast and there is a perfect little end to the whole situation tacked on to finish things off.  May the force be with us.   Artists featured:  Pink Floyd, Metallica, Accept, Black Sabbath, Billy Talent, Seether, Bullet For My Valentine, In This Moment, The Burning, Hell Fire, Slash's Snakepit, Megadeth, Grand Funk Railroad, Kiss, Kane Roberts, Halestorm, King Kobra, Van Coke Kartel, Therapy?, Serj Tankian, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Code 106, Diverted Disorder, Scorpions, Saxon, Volbeat, Sixx A.M., Mastodon, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Gary Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Gojira, Guns ‘n' Roses, Kreator, Pink Floyd.

The album was a commercial success, topping the US charts for 15 weeks, and reaching number three in the UK. It initially received mixed reviews from critics, many of whom found it overblown and pretentious, but later received accolades as one of the finest albums of all time. Emily Heller is a running enthusiast who created her own YouTube channel in 2019 that filled the void of women’s voices in the world of running shoe review videos. Emily’s channel “Run Like Hell(er)” provides an inclusive look at the competitive world of running shoes. As her channel grows, subscribers have become fascinated with her honest & professional approach and have become intrigued with her distinct personality. I also wanted to uncover more about her creative background and career. Even if you’re not a runner, I know you’ll get something out of this conversation about doing what you love and creating something that’s bigger than you ever imagined it could be. Also, yes, Ruby the dog gets some much deserved love during this discussion as well. El grupo grabó durante esta época muchos álbumes que se convirtieron en enormes éxitos comerciales, como The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) y The Wall (1979).

I had my head phones in when I got a strange feeling like I was in danger. I took my ear buds out and realized something huge was pacing me in the woods. It took me a second to figure out why my steps had an echo but it was this thing and it mirroring my moves. I ran like hell as fast as I could and this thing kept pace. As I cleared the woods I looked back and that is when I saw it…..”
