Copywriting became her security net. Talking with Nicki and Kate at the end of 2021, Nicole shares how she's incorporated copywriting into a mix of work she does. Her part-time copywriting work is one piece of what she calls her "patchwork" career, which also including teaching a course and running her Etsy shop. She shares how she got to this balance, why it works for her, and her advice for others looking to pursue copywriting. Note: Nicole mentions Pitch-a-palooza in the interview. This is a free month-long annual event for CCA students that gets everyone focused on sending their first pitches or refining their pitching process with weekly challenges and giveaways. When Kate Kosydar first discovered copywriting, she had been working full time in the faith-based nonprofit world for more than a decade and was ready for a change. She talks about why she continued to pursue copywriting, even after taking another copywriting course she didn't find valuable, and how she realized her original definition of copywriting (being "salesy" or selling out her values) was not at all what it actually ended up being for her copywriting career. You can make a difference as a copywriter working with businesses you believe in and honoring your values. Spoiler: she has nearly doubled her former full-time salary—working part time, and she and her husband have managed to pay off their student loans. Kate also touches on living in a more rural area and the benefits of being able to work remote with her clients. Note: We mention "Pitchapalooza" on this episode, which is an annual four-week event for Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students that gets everyone writing and sending their first pitches. Nicki Krawczyk is a copywriter from Massachusetts, USA, with 15+ years of experience, writing for multi-billion-dollar companies, solopreneurs, and every size business in between. She also coaches people to become professional copywriters and build thriving careers of their own through her company Filthy Rich Writer and her Comprehensive Copywriting Academy. For Nicky, being "filthy rich" means having a job you love, being good at what you do, and making great money doing it. She's passionate about helping people take their writing skills and turn them into a marketable business. Even during the difficult times that the pandemic brought, Nicki and her community found that many businesses that were focused on survival brought in freelance copywriters who helped them adjust their marketing which helped quite a number of copywriters thrive. In this episode, Nicki talks about her own work situation, how she has embraced the energy that she has in the early mornings to focus her productivity on her most important tasks first thing in the morning, as that is what she has learned works best for her. She also delves into the skills that copy editors need to develop and explains that certificates don't really have a place in this industry. She breaks down the difference between copywriting, copyediting, content writing, proofreading, and the relationship copywriters have with graphic designers. Nicki also coaches freelancers who work outside of the copywriting realm in some of the more general skills that they can apply to their business as well through another part of her business, Fired Up Freelance. She offers different levels of support, free and paid, for those who are interested in making a career out of copywriting.
