I'm not sure about you but the heaviness of the world right now has me needing more time for calm and reflection and planning… and in that process of really prioritizing this… I realized the importance of a personal fortress. A space where you can retreat and be alone and do whatever you need to do to reset your mind, revisit your priorities and how you spend your time and mental energy… all of it. I wanted to do a podcast episode on this topic because I think changing our environment changes our headspace and in this way it can be so fulfilling. Today we are diving into planning more peace and calm and clarity in our lives through slowing everything down and spending time in a place that is special to you. Ideas of what this could look like! Home gym Bathtub Desk or writing nook Couch by a window Large closet or wardrobe corner Backyard garden Front porch or balcony Comfy chair with a blanket Yoga mat corner Bed with soft lighting Garage gym or workshop Attic or loft space Basement reading nook Hammock Fireplace area In this episode, we'll explore inspiring ideas and perspectives from thought leaders on how to build your own personal sanctuary and use it to find calm, focus on priorities and recenter. We cover… Why having a personal “fortress” matters in a noisy, stressful world How stepping away creates peace, clarity, and calm The holistic benefits of slowing down: mental, emotional, physical, and relational Avoiding burnout through daily renewal (“sharpening the saw”) Why everyone needs to recharge, introverts and extroverts alike Creative ideas for personal sanctuaries (bath, desk, couch, garden, home gym, and more) How to design your space: calming atmosphere, personalization, clutter-free environment Ways to recharge in your fortress: stillness, journaling, prayer, meditation, yoga, breathwork The importance of unplugging completely Guarding this time fiercely and saying no without guilt How your fortress becomes a secret superpower, helping you return to life refreshed and energized Over time, this refuge becomes your secret superpower. It allows you to meet life's challenges with a calmer mind and a fuller heart, because you know you have a safe place to restore yourself. So design your spaces, embrace the quiet, and enjoy the process of recharging. By making this a habit, you'll not only find more peace and clarity, but also bring your most awesome, energized self to everything you do and everyone you care about. In today's episode of The Curious Therapist Show, we discuss 3 types of self-care…We hear about self-care everywhere — in books, on social media, in conversations with friends. And while it's such an important part of supporting our mental health, I've been reflecting lately on how the mental health space and our hyper individualistic culture has most of our self-care...well...super self-focused.We've got:Comfy (restorative) self-care: the things that feel warm and nourishing in the moment (bubble baths, memes, a cuppa in the sun).Uncomfy or “boring” (growth oriented) self-care: the things we don't feel like doing but know help us in the long run (going for that walk, setting a boundary, having the awkward conversation). But lately, I've been thinking about a third type too— self-care that gets us outside of ourselves. Not just tending to our needs, but turning our focus outward — toward helping others and strengthening our community. It doesn't have to be big or time-consuming:Checking in on a neighbour who lives aloneWriting a kind review for a small business you loveCooking an extra serve of dinner to drop off for a friendDonating bloodVolunteering an hour at a local event or community gardenWhy does this matter? Research shows that volunteering and helping others can reduce stress, combat depression, and even lead to a longer life. It's good for the people we help — and it's surprisingly good for us, too.So, I'd love to hear from you…What does comfy self-care look like for you? What's your uncomfy/boring self-care?And what's one way you could try community self-care in the next week or two?To connect with Vanessa:Find Vanessa on Facebook: (2) FacebookFind Vanessa on Instagram: Vanessa Preston (@vanessa_preston_) • Instagram photos and videosCheck out Vanessa's website to find a freebie and all about her intuitive eating and body image programs: Vanessa Preston (podia.com)Or her practice website: Green life Psychology - Green Life Psychology Disclaimer:This podcast represents the opinions of Vanessa Preston and her guests to the show. It's another Ticked Off Tuesday, and Jared is back to duet your complaints with gusto! First up, his mom somehow turned “I went to bed early” into a dire medical emergency; nothing like parental concern to turn rest into a diagnosis. We've got a listener fed up with t-shirt cannon “performers” who think they're auditioning for So You Think You Can Dance instead of, you know, actually launching shirts. Another transplant from NYC to Atlanta is shocked to find the real summer villain isn't the humidity, it's indoor workplaces kept at a balmy 81 degrees. Plus, someone's blocking a one-way street with hazards on despite a sea of open parking spots, and Jared's not having it. All that, a few tangents, and the sweet release of shared pettiness.Support our show by clicking below!Support the show, and get 10% off your Hero Bread order. Scotch shares a story about someone who rocks denim at work but races home to change into cozy pants. Mandy reveals her two-tier yoga pant system—work vs. home. Then, Tank sparks a hilarious conversation about how couples sit at bar restaurants—side-by-side or face-to-face? His recent observations might surprise you. Also, Tank stepped in gum and is fired up! Should tossing gum on the ground be illegal? We open the floor to other everyday annoyances that should be outlawed. Lucy Jeffrey is the founder of Bare Kind and Candid Founders, two purpose-driven brands built from a mission to make commerce more meaningful. Bare Kind is a bamboo sock company that donates 10% of profits to save the animal featured on each sock, while Candid Founders is both a YouTube channel and growth agency helping consumer brands scale on Faire, a leading B2B wholesale marketplace. Before launching either company, Lucy worked in banking and began experimenting with ecommerce by selling reusable straws, t-shirts, and other sustainable products. Her viral turtle-themed content and strong brand mission helped Bare Kind stand out in the crowded DTC space and grow into a seasonal powerhouse, with 70% of revenue landing in Q4. But with a growing team and cash flow challenges, Lucy co-founded Candid Founders to help other brands succeed on Faire while smoothing Bare Kind's revenue curve.Whether scaling to 1,000+ retail accounts, turning her backend team into a profitable service business, or shutting off paid Meta ads to improve profit margins, Lucy brings a sharp, experimental mindset to Ecommerce. She shares insights on building sustainable DTC brands, making wholesale work, and running two businesses with her husband without relying on outside capital or paid ads. Darren returns to the mic with stories, updates, and a deeper look into the symptoms he was experiencing prior to his recent surgeries — many of which were linked to one powerful root cause: stress. In this honest and eye-opening conversation, Jen and Darren explore how stress shows up in unexpected ways, especially after a cancer diagnosis. You might not feel anxious or panicked, but instead you're dealing with brain fog, cravings, irritability, skin issues, or trouble sleeping — all while thinking you're "doing fine."
