We have already seen about obesity in adults. Its time to take it back to childhood to see and fix the problem in better ways Children see their parents and take them for role models and that is how they form habits. Sadly the junk food snack eating habits are obtained from them. There were many studies done on low fat approach and calorie cutting approach done on children and none proved to be effective. Finally in 2004 The AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY DID THE ROMP AND CHOMP STUDY. The study used 12000 childres of ages between 0 and 5 years old the study was divided to two groups. one group was not given any restriction The control group was given the following two important restrictions 1. Decrease the amount of sugary drinks and replace with water and milk 2. Eliminate snacks and introduce the habit of eating fruits and vegetables. In 2004 it was found that the control group had significatly decreased the obesity markers by upto 3 % which was a huge number In Northern England they conducted the " DITCH THE FIZZ"initiative the slogan was simple. - stop having carbonated sugary drinks. On an average each participating child was able to reduce 150ml of fizz drink per day By end of the study - the kids who ditched fizz were able to reduce obesity by 0.75% in a short term study and the group which did not restrict fizz increased obesity markers by 7.5 percentage. The study teaches us an important thing about dealing with child obesity * we can not tax our children in the name of diet - they would miserably fail * rather inroduce good eating habits in place of bad ones and choose one habit and eliminate one habit at a time. This way our success rate will be much higher Lets go a step further - women during pregnancy have tendency to gain weight. but the processed food frenzy makes them gain too much weight due to which they suffer * excessive weight gain * gestational obesity * gestational diabetes how does this affect the child * It was found in a study that childres gain more weight when mom gains too much weight and are bone with more fat mass * chinlren born in these condition are 3 times more prone to obesity and diabetes when they grow.
