70 years ago, almost no one was overweight or fat, let alone obese. Obesity really didn't exist. So now experts are saying that there is an obesity crisis. Nonsense. There is no crisis. People are just putting too much food in their mouths. They are making themselves overweight, fat or obese. So why would they do something so stupid? They do it because having food in their mouths makes them feel better or less anxious. It is that emotional need that causes people to put so much food in their mouth. You can eliminate that emotional need, and you will no longer need to put food in your mouth to feel better. It's not difficult and it's free. Once adult obesity is solved by eliminating this emotional need, childhood obesity will follow.
At 8:30pm: In a recent journal published by the American Medical Association, research found that between 2017 and 2020, over 19% of American children aged 2 to 19 were considered obese. The journal also suggested that behavioral counseling is the best solution for helping these children. Do you think they need to hear the cold hard truth about their weight issues, or is there another way? This week I am delighted to be joined by Sheila Carroll MDDr. Sheila Carroll is a board-certified pediatrican and obesity medicine physician who is dedicated to helping children achieve their best health. She does this by working exclusively with parents who are willing to focus on modifying their own behaviors to ultimately improve their child's health. I absolutely LOVE her approach to helping kids get healthier because she focusses on what the parent can do for the child and the example the parent sets rather than blaming the child or making the child change their behaviours in the agressive way most medical providers do these day..We talk about many things including why children's behaviour starts with the parents. How parents have to be the drivers of change that they want to see in their children.Your child does not need to see a doctor when you're concerned about their weight, YOU and your partner need to. Why modern society is geared towards unhealthy children. The importance of sleep, exercise and relaxation on health.Only by leading by example will you have a realistic chance of improving your child's health. How the traditional "just feed him less" approach does not work int he long run.And how the approach Dr Carroll uses is MUCH more friendly and supportive to the child than most medical professionals. And here's a lovely little freebie for listeners.Go to https://calendly.com/scarrollmd/coaching to schedule a free 30 min strategy session with Dr Carroll. On this call, she works with the parent to identify one problem they are facing in trying to help their child and together you'll work on solving it by gaining clarity next steps. EPISODE SUMMARY: Dr. Pearson gets a little “dramatic” about her upset of a new drug, Ozempic, being used to treat childhood obesity. Yikes! Please, listen to her simple rules of thumb for saving your child and your family from a life with unknown consequences. ON THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS… Dr. Pearson has been doing a lot of reading lately and would like to share her concerns with you about drugs used for child obesity. She is going to share some simple do's and don'ts. She's going to share about five to six rules here is what you should do and here's what you shouldn't do. There are so many different types of diets out there that it can become confusing and overwhelming. 45% of adolescents are moving towards obesity and 25% are prediabetic or diabetic. Diabetes is to cancer what smoking is to lung cancer. 80% of adults are overweight or moving toward obesity and 50% of them are prediabetic or are diabetic. American Pediatric Association just came out with a guideline for young adults and children should consider taking drugs or having surgery if they are overweight. The medication they came up with is Ozempic which is actually a diabetic medication, that reduces their desire to eat, but it's an injection that they have to take every week for the rest of their lives. If they stop taking the injection they may develop a metabolic problem that is unknown, they may gain the weight back to a greater degree, and the side effects are nuts. The vast majority of obesity can be improved with what a person chooses to think about what they choose to eat. We are being told so many different things with different diets that it's easy to understand why people are getting so confused and just throwing up their hands. When we get depressed or frustrated it's easy to turn to our favorite foods and just eat away our problems. So let's take a step back and ignore all these thoughts and rules of these other diets and try listening to some simple steps that Dr. Pearson is going to share with us. Try to stay away from fake foods and turn towards real food that doesn't have a list of ingredients. If you eat animals make sure they were cared for properly throughout their lives and not forced to eat things they wouldn't usually or given drugs to keep them alive long enough for slaughter. Don't eat farm fish, they are fed horrible things. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Eat slowly, sit down in a chair, and enjoy what it tastes like. Make sure you aren't grazing all day long. If you are eating processed foods you will find you are hungry all day long, but if you are eating real foods then you find you aren't hungry as often. Organic foods really do matter. Stay away from foods that are not good for your gut. A happy gut is a happy brain. Do these things for your kids so they don't end up addicted to things that will be harder for them to drop as they get older. You can't make these changes overnight, but you can slowly get these changes worked in over a year. CALLS-TO-ACTION: Get a copy of the book on Amazon. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are in the news this week for new updates on the growing problem of childhood obesity along with new treatment guidelines. This is a very critical show of what we are being led to believe and how these guidelines and strategies will never provide root-cause solutions to our failing health in youth and adults. They are recommending "early and intensive" treatment and interventions without ever mentioning PHYSICAL EDUCATION! Are you kidding me? Fasten your seat belts because I have a lot to say on this one. Wear a mask too because what we are being told--smells like #@!$!*Language Disclaimer-While this show is about children, it is not suitable for children.Photo Credit: Ron Jones
Mayor Jerry Dyer is headed to the White House to meet with President Joe Biden on Friday, Jan. 20. Biden will address Dyer and hundreds of his colleagues as part of the winter U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington. Dyer and Biden met as leaders in August 2021 virtually, discussing the federal infrastructure bill. Biden opened his comments by saying, “Jerry, I don't want to get you in trouble out in Fresno, California, for letting you know I actually like a Republican. But you've done a hell of a job.” George Santos was sworn into office Friday despite allegations of fraud and lies about his history. Now, End Citizens United is filing complaints against Santos with the FEC, OCE, and DOJ. The American Academy of Pediatrics updated clinical practice guidelines to evaluate and treat children and adolescents with obesity. The guidelines suggest the child uses medication, or even surgery to help with chronic disease. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We all know it-- it's a love/hate relationship that we have with social media. Most of us adults don't get it and don't know how to process it, but also understand it is the new normal for our kids' generation. There are silver linings to using social media, along with numerous pitfalls. Cue in Dr. Lori Fishman, a renowned clinical psychologist who specializes in working with parents, teens and young adults on obesity, body image and anxiety issues, which are all situations that can be exacerbated by social media. In this episode, we discuss the positive aspects of using social media, as well as some of the negative effects we all need to be sensitive to and address with ourselves and our kids. From oversharing, over usage, comparisons, placing unwanted pressures on each other, and those dreaded feelings of exclusion and rejection, Lori gives us great advice on how we adapt our lens , as well as how we approach our kids when social media becomes harmful to their well being.
In today's episode we are joined by arguably youtube's biggest fitness creator Matt Morsia. We have already seen about obesity in adults. Its time to take it back to childhood to see and fix the problem in better ways Children see their parents and take them for role models and that is how they form habits. Sadly the junk food snack eating habits are obtained from them. There were many studies done on low fat approach and calorie cutting approach done on children and none proved to be effective. Finally in 2004 The AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY DID THE ROMP AND CHOMP STUDY. The study used 12000 childres of ages between 0 and 5 years old the study was divided to two groups. one group was not given any restriction The control group was given the following two important restrictions 1. Decrease the amount of sugary drinks and replace with water and milk 2. Eliminate snacks and introduce the habit of eating fruits and vegetables. In 2004 it was found that the control group had significatly decreased the obesity markers by upto 3 % which was a huge number In Northern England they conducted the " DITCH THE FIZZ"initiative the slogan was simple. - stop having carbonated sugary drinks. On an average each participating child was able to reduce 150ml of fizz drink per day By end of the study - the kids who ditched fizz were able to reduce obesity by 0.75% in a short term study and the group which did not restrict fizz increased obesity markers by 7.5 percentage. The study teaches us an important thing about dealing with child obesity * we can not tax our children in the name of diet - they would miserably fail * rather inroduce good eating habits in place of bad ones and choose one habit and eliminate one habit at a time. This way our success rate will be much higher Lets go a step further - women during pregnancy have tendency to gain weight. but the processed food frenzy makes them gain too much weight due to which they suffer * excessive weight gain * gestational obesity * gestational diabetes how does this affect the child * It was found in a study that childres gain more weight when mom gains too much weight and are bone with more fat mass * chinlren born in these condition are 3 times more prone to obesity and diabetes when they grow. We want our younger ones to be super healthy and happy in their lives. so lets make sure we fix the issue at the root cause. Hope you enjoyed the podcast. Today we tackle a big question that has been growing in popularity of late: can you really be healthy at every size? After the wildly popular Cosmopolitan magazine ran a massive feature on how there is no ‘one size fits all’, and how every size can be healthy, we thought it’d be good to address why such advertising may be dangerous, what the realities of obesity are, and the future repercussions on it. This segues into a discussion on BMI, child obesity, nutrition for children, and all the science and application poured into it! The UK has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in Europe, and COVID has impacted the efforts to reduce this number as lockdowns take their toll on activity levels and eating habits. With healthy food costing more per calorie than unhealthy food, how can this growing child obesity crisis be addressed by government, industry and the public? What needs to happen to hit the targets that have been set for 2030? Joining host Stefan Gates are an expert panel to examine the child obesity crisis including Christina Marriott, CEO, Royal Society of Public Health and Chris Thomas, Senior Research Fellow, IPPR. They’ll examine where we are right now and offer ways that we can improve our understanding of health and nutrition to tackle the issues we face.About our panelChristina Marriott, CEO, Royal Society of Public Health Christina has been Chief Executive of RSPH since May 2020. Previously, the Chief Executive of Revolving Doors Agency. A leading New Zealand health researcher says this country needs an overarching public health programme to tackle the obesity epidemic.
Dr Natalie Masento from University of Reading and Sarah Hickey from Guy's and St Thomas' Charity join Matt and Lukxmi to discuss the current state of childhood nutrition in the UK and globally. They explore the impact of “food environments” and how physical and emotional surroundings can play a role in building positive habits. Natalie introduces 'See and Eat!', a series of eBooks developed to get children interested in vegetables – and Sarah also shares how Guy's and St Thomas' Charity is working with partners to reduce childhood obesity in London.

Keeping your weight under control is one of the guiding rules we hear from our doctors. For adults it can be a challenge. But for children, especially those with special needs, dealing with obesity can be particularly difficult. On this edition of UWM Today, we meet an expert on child obesity. Michele Polfuss is an associate professor at UWM’s College of Nursing. She is leading a $3.6 million federal grant to investigate weight issues. Polfuss is also serving as the joint research chair in the nursing of children at both UWM and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
When Professor Dame Sally Davies left her role as Chief Medical Officer for England in Autumn 2019, she didn't go quietly. Instead, she published a strongly titled, independent, 96 page report with a rallying call: 'Time To Solve Childhood Obesity'. "The Government ambition" she wrote "is to halve childhood obesity by 2030 – in England, we are nowhere near achieving this. Yet, if we are bold, we can." What followed was a plethora of recommendations for Government bodies, local authorities, schools, researchers, the NHS, the private sector and more. In the first of two programmes, Sheila Dillon meets the young people at the heart of this issue. She asks them what they think needs to change for them to lead healthy lives in the future and walks to school with 14 year old Dev Sharma to ask what he thinks can be part of the solution. In North Carolina diabetes related costs exceed 1.5 billion dollars a year.
