Fly To Freedom: Healing from an eating disorder

Recovery can feel deeply uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and at times utterly terrifying. But what if that discomfort is not proof that you are doing recovery wrong… but evidence that your brain and nervous system are learning something new?In this Q&A episode of Fly to Freedom, I answer real questions from members inside The Eating Disorder Recovery Circle about some of the hardest and most honest parts of eating disorder recovery.Together, we explore what happens when recovery feels wrong, why fear of weight gain goes far beyond appearance, how trauma can shape restriction and people-pleasing patterns, and what it really takes to keep choosing recovery when everything inside you wants to run back to what feels familiar. In this episode of Fly to Freedom, I talk about:✨ How to keep choosing recovery when the unfamiliar feels terrifying✨ Fear of weight gain, body changes, and the sensory experience of living in a changing body✨ Autism, sensory processing, clothing struggles, and feeling physically uncomfortable in recovery✨ Trauma, emotional abuse, people-pleasing, and why boundaries can feel so difficult✨ Binge eating, extreme hunger, refeeding, and understanding the difference between biology and pathology✨ Compensating behaviours, exercise, food rules, and how recovery rewires the brain✨ Why community and nervous system safety matter so deeply in eating disorder recoveryOne of the questions explores something I do not think we talk about enough in anorexia recovery and eating disorder recovery: the felt experience of weight gain. Not mirrors. Not scales. The physical sensation of inhabiting a body that feels different — clothes touching differently, movement feeling unfamiliar, heightened body awareness, and the intense sensory experience that can come with body changes, especially for autistic people.I also answer a powerful question about childhood trauma, emotional responsibility, caregiving, and restriction — and why recovery sometimes involves grieving the love, safety, or acceptance that was never fully received. We also explore one of the most misunderstood parts of eating disorder recovery: binge eating, extreme hunger, and what happens when a previously undernourished body finally begins asking for what it genuinely needs. I unpack the difference between biological refeeding responses and binge eating disorder, and why context matters so much when understanding hunger in recovery. And I share parts of my own recovery journey too, including how I challenged compensating behaviours, stopped compulsive exercise, responded to intense hunger, and allowed my body to repair after years of deprivation. If you are struggling with fear of weight gain, compensating, uncertainty, body discomfort, trauma, binge eating fears, or simply trying to stay committed when recovery feels terrifying, I hope this episode helps you feel seen, understood, and less alone.I am Julia Trehane, specialist anorexia recovery coach, and after fully recovering from decades of anorexia, orthorexia, and exercise addiction, I now help others navigate the emotions beneath an eating disorder to create lasting freedom. We discuss how even moderate sleep loss increases appetite, changes hunger-related hormones, and causes weight gain, even when calories are not increased. We also explain how meal timing and specific foods, like fiber, ginger, saturated fat, and various oils, affect sleep onset, sleep quality, and metabolism. Throughout the conversation, we discuss specific foods and diets that directly support weight loss, better sleep, and long-term cardiometabolic health. Read the show notes at hubermanlab.com. Hypnosis for Permanent Weight Loss

In this episode, Leslie sits down with hormone health coach Dana Dinnawi to discuss the powerful connection between food, hormones, inflammation, and overall well-being. Dana shares her personal journey from years of unexplained symptoms, including weight gain, cystic acne, frozen shoulder, exhaustion, and severe ovulation pain, to discovering how food and lifestyle changes transformed her health. Dana explains how conventional approaches often focus on managing symptoms rather than addressing root causes. She describes how a simple nutrition-based intervention helped her recognize that many chronic health issues were messages from her body signaling deeper imbalances. That experience eventually inspired her to become a health coach and spend the last 13 years helping women reverse hormonal and inflammatory conditions naturally. Leslie and Dana explore the emotional side of health transformation, discussing the challenges of perfectionism, diet culture, guilt, and shame. They explain why true healing requires more than simply changing what you eat; it also involves understanding emotional needs, stress patterns, self-sabotage, and the deeper reasons behind food choices. The conversation also highlights the importance of developing a healthy relationship with food rather than chasing perfection. Dana shares how she learned to balance enjoying life's special moments while still supporting her health goals, and why becoming the "CEO of your own health" is a journey that unfolds over time through self-awareness, experimentation, and compassion. Standout Quote "Your body is always communicating with you. Symptoms aren't random; they're messages showing you that something needs attention." Timestamp Highlights 00:00 – Dana shares her personal health struggles and the symptoms that led her to seek answers. 02:34 – Leslie welcomes hormone health coach Dana Dinnawi to the podcast. 05:27 – Dana explains how years of dieting and unexplained symptoms led her to explore natural healing. 08:30 – Discovering health coaching and learning about inflammation as a root cause. 10:24 – A two-week nutrition reset produces unexpected improvements beyond weight loss. 11:03 – Understanding symptoms as messages from the body rather than isolated problems. 12:13 – Dana's life-changing realization that inspired her to become a health coach. 13:21 – Leslie shares her own experiences using food to improve health and reduce inflammation. 15:31 – Moving beyond weight loss and embracing a broader definition of health. 16:39 – The moment Dana realized her energy and vitality had returned. 19:04 – Leslie discusses orthorexia and the challenge of becoming overly focused on healthy eating. 20:14 – Primary food vs. secondary food: addressing emotional needs alongside nutrition. 22:11 – Why healing requires flexibility instead of perfection. 24:00 – Mid-episode invitation to schedule a free consultation with Leslie. 26:35 – How emotional needs often drive food choices and self-sabotaging behaviors. 29:00 – The role of community, support, and accountability in long-term change. 31:03 – Leslie discusses how personal growth often reveals deeper layers of healing. 34:15 – Dana shares her journey through perfectionism and restrictive dieting mindsets. 36:12 – Learning from setbacks and recognizing the body's responses to food choices. 39:00 – Finding balance between health goals and enjoying life's special occasions. 41:58 – Why becoming the CEO of your own health requires experimentation and self-trust. 43:56 – Dana shares her coaching programs and ways listeners can work with her. 45:00 – Final reflections on food freedom, health, and sustainable transformation. 46:11 – Closing remarks and information about Leslie's free Food Noise masterclass. This conversation is not just about menopause symptoms. It is about what it actually feels like to live inside a changing female body in midlife. The grief, the confusion, the vanity, the softness, the strength, the reinvention. All of it. In this episode, I sit down with fitness hall of famer, JJ Virgin for a real conversation about what happens when your body starts changing in ways you did not expect, the things that stop working, and how to hold onto yourself while also becoming someone new. We talk about the reality of perimenopause and menopause when you are living it, not just teaching it. JJ shares what her own transition looked like, from thyroid changes and hormone shifts to body composition changes and the shrinking margin for error that comes with midlife. We get into why so many women feel blindsided by weight gain, why muscle changes everything, why early hormone support matters, and why the old advice to just eat less and exercise more completely misses the point. We also go into the emotional side of aging that women do not talk about enough. The pressure to look good. The decision to use Botox, fillers, or surgery. The freedom that can come with getting older. The shift into caring less about pleasing everyone else. And we talk about practical tools too, from strength training to creatine, aminos, GLP-1s, thyroid support, and how to approach midlife in a way that is proactive, honest, and actually helpful. This is a conversation about aging on your terms, with more power, more honesty, and a lot less shame. In this episode, we cover: What JJ's own perimenopause and menopause transition looked like Why thyroid changes can show up early in perimenopause Why midlife weight gain is not just about calories The truth about weight loss resistance in menopause Why estrogen support matters earlier than most women are told Why muscle is one of the most important things to focus on in midlife The bare minimum strength training women need for health and longevity JJ's thoughts on Botox, facelifts, and aging on your own terms The role of GLP-1s in menopause weight gain and metabolic health Why creatine and amino acids may be game changers for midlife women Who this episode is for: This episode is for women in perimenopause and menopause who feel like their body is changing faster than they expected and they are trying to figure out what to do next. It is especially for women dealing with weight gain, muscle loss, low confidence, changing hormones, thyroid issues, or the emotional side of aging and wanting a more honest, more empowering conversation about how to handle this season well. And here is the part most coaches miss: leptin resistance does not always show up as constant hunger. Some women are starving all day. Others barely have an appetite, eat 1,200 calories a day, and STILL gain weight. Both of them have a metabolism stuck in conservation mode. Both of them have leptin signaling that isn't getting through. The hunger is just a separate system that may or may not be screaming about it. If either of those is you, this is the episode that finally tells you why.

Why is it so hard to stop eating ultra-processed foods — even when you know they're hurting you? In Episode 13 of this 16-part series, Dr. Brendan McCarthy explains why the real problem is not just the food itself. The real problem is the loop: Cue or emotional state → Wanting → Bargaining → Consumption → Temporary relief → Crash/regret → Repeat. This episode explores how ultra-processed and hyper-palatable foods become attached to stress, boredom, loneliness, exhaustion, anxiety, and emotional discomfort — training the brain to seek relief through food. Key ideas from this episode: • Hunger is the body asking for nourishment • Wanting is the conditioned brain asking for the expected hit • The food is the bait. The loop is the trap. • The food breaks the feeling. It does not heal the source. • You cannot remove a counterfeit regulator without restoring real regulation. Dr. McCarthy breaks down why willpower alone often fails and why lasting change requires a physiologic off-ramp: stable meals, protein, fiber, hydration, sleep, movement, emotional regulation, cue reduction, social planning, and relapse repair. This is not about “perfect eating.” It is about building a life where food is no longer your primary regulator of stress, comfort, or identity. If you've ever felt trapped in cravings, emotional eating, binge-restrict cycles, or constant food noise, this episode is designed to help you understand the mechanism behind the loop — and how to begin leaving it.

Having had the privilege of knowing Sachin both personally and professionally, what stands out most is his unwavering commitment to helping people better understand their physiology so they can heal more effectively and live more intentionally. In today's conversation, we explore the connection between the autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve, and overall health. Sachin shares insights on breath dynamics, diaphragm function, coherent breathing, CO₂ tolerance, the Bohr effect, the physiologic sigh, and the often-overlooked role of repressed emotions in physical well-being. We also discuss the importance of nature, circadian rhythms, sunlight, temperature regulation, and Sachin offers his recommendations for women in midlife and beyond. I also highly recommend his new book, Breath, Balance, and Burn, which was recently released. Stay tuned for a fascinating conversation on breath, healing, and the daily habits that shape how we feel, function, and age. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How spending too much time in fight-or-flight mode prevents the body from entering a healing state How women's multiple roles and chronic stress, combined with midlife hormonal transitions, can create a “perfect storm” of sympathetic dominance and nervous system dysregulation How your breath reflects your emotional state  Why healing becomes difficult when the body remains in a fight-or-flight state The benefits of coherent breathing for oxygen delivery and nervous system regulation How the diaphragm serves as an access point to emotional regulation and nervous system control How our breathing patterns and nervous system state can influence the emotional state of others Sachin outlines practical techniques to help regulate stress, improve focus, increase energy, and prepare for sleep How modern indoor living disconnects people from their natural rhythms Connect with Cynthia Thurlow   Follow on X, Instagram & LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website. WHY DOES PROGRESS FEEL SO. MUCH. HARDER. NOW!?!!?I promise, your body didn't suddenly turn against you…but the way you've been trying to control it might not fit this season anymorethis is for the woman who feels like nothing changed, but everything feels harder. I'm joined by Amanda Thebe for the menopause conversation women actually need: we talk perimenopause, metabolism, weight gain, menopause belly, body recomposition, strength training, protein, sleep, recovery, cardio, zone 2, HIIT, alcohol, MHT, and body image. The core message is that menopause does not stop women over 35 or 40 from making progress, losing fat, building muscle, improving body composition, or feeling strong again. But it can change the conditions around the plan. Sleep can get worse, cravings can increase, recovery can drop, body shape can shift, motivation can change, and the emotional impact of feeling unlike yourself can make consistency much harder. If you've been feeling like your body is foreign, your old plan is not working the same, your stomach is suddenly where everything goes, or you're stuck between panic dieting and giving up, this episode will help you understand what is actually happening and what to focus on next. If this episode hits you, share it with a woman who needs to hear she is not broken. intelligent strength training matters more than just doing hard workoutsprotein and structured meals need to support your training, lifestyle AND recoveryand cardio STILL has value – but dosage and type matters a fktonne moreand yesbody image work must also be a part of this equation this podcast will give you hope and clear up some lies you've been told from gUrUs preying on your insecurities and fears menopause DOESN'T stop progress… but it does mean you cant wing it anymoreand the message I want to keep on drumming home to you is calories still matter, but so does the woman trying to execute themthe bouncing skittles (aka your estrogen now)  can deeply impact your sleep, hunger, cravings, recovery, motivation, body shape, emotional regulation, body image, and how easy it is to execute the plan trying to follow the same strategies… get tighter, stricter…trying to “stubborn your way through” another diet… another calorie cut… another I JUST WANT THIS WEIGHT OFF… will only set you up for more catastrophe so yeah – even if you ARE doing the same things…for most women, there will be elements you arent aware of that have changed, but for the small few who ARE on top of it all… as you have been most of your life – until now, its because those were broken strategies to begin with youre not being dramatic, I promised you aren't doomed – and no, you didn't suddenly get lazy…I get that last part can be a real fear, bc you fear letting yourself go.. getting too lazy and it getting “worse” you feel confused and honestly, a bit scared.“is this menopause, am I failing, or do I just not know what to do anymore?”“tell me there is a reason this feels harder, but also tell me I still have options.” this IS hard, you're not imagining it and it is NOT you – BUT…. we need to stop making it harder and more complicated than it needs to beits about DROWNING OUT THE NOISE so you can start doing the RIGHT things with MORE INTENT find me @transformxruby on instagram Apply for a free consult: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfqaxMDfbPYPYVui3BgSClnDXTj4BWjRvPkbBHuK5CP7SQsIw/viewform?usp=sf_link Direct link to DM me on IG:https://ig.me/m/transformxruby

If you've hit your 40s and suddenly feel like you're losing it, waking up at 3 a.m., feeling on edge for no reason, exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't fix, I want you to hear this: it might not be anxiety. It might be perimenopause. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Bojana Jankovic Weatherly, a double board-certified physician in internal and integrative medicine, to talk about the symptoms most of us are normalizing and most doctors are missing. We get into why progesterone decline shows up as anxiety, insomnia, and those 3 a.m. wake-ups long before any hot flash ever does, and why so many women in this stage of life are sent home with an antidepressant or an Ambien instead of an honest conversation about their hormones.  That's medical gaslighting, and it's stealing years of quality of life from women in their 40s. We talk about why hormone testing isn't the answer, what to track instead, and when to ask your doctor about progesterone even if you're still getting a regular period.  If you've been told to lose some weight, try meditation, or just push through, this one is for you. You're not crazy. You're not weak. You're hormonal, and there is so much we can actually do about it. Self Gaslighting yourself in the exam room? What if the reason belly fat won't budge after 40… has nothing to do with willpower—and everything to do with your gut? In this powerful episode, Ben Azadi sits down with Cynthia Thurlow to unpack the real reason women struggle with weight gain, fatigue, and hormonal chaos in midlife. Drawing from her new book, The Menopause Gut, Cynthia explains why perimenopause and menopause are far more complex than just declining estrogen—and why the gut microbiome may be the missing piece most women (and doctors) overlook. They break down how stress, sleep, muscle loss, ultra-processed foods, and hidden hormonal shifts create the perfect storm for weight loss resistance. You'll also discover why common “healthy habits” like excessive cardio, under-eating protein, or over-fasting can actually make things worse. If you've ever felt like your body stopped responding after 40, this episode will completely change how you approach fat loss, hormones, and long-term health.
