This episode is brought to you by Birch Living and Vivobarefoot.A calorie is a calorie, right? Wrong. This myth that refuses to die keeps people from getting and staying healthy, as well as losing weight and keeping it off.The current thinking is as long as we burn more calories than we consume, we will lose weight. But thinking that losing weight is all about energy balance or calories in/calories out vastly oversimplifies the truth. To make matters worse, the food industry and government agencies perpetuate this lie and actually rely on you believing it to stay afloat. On today's mini-episode, Dhru sits down with Dr. Robert Lustig to talk about why calories aren't the full story when it comes to weight loss, the real dangers of eating too much sugar, and how to take better care of our metabolic health.Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He's the Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF.   Stress is our body's way of reacting to feeling under pressure. We enter the fight or flight response where our bodies go into life-saving mode to make us stay and fight or run away to escape danger. Originally this would have been vital to help us survive being attacked, whereas these days, we're in much less life-threatening situations! Unfortunately, our bodies can't tell the difference between cheating death in the claws of a predator to dealing with a stressful email! If we're not actually in physical danger, the processes going on inside our body to make us fight or flight can actually lead to weight gain and difficulties in losing weight. Today is the second in a four-part series talking about what might be going on in your body to cause you to struggle to lose weight. Weight gain is something most of us have struggled with, or will struggle with at some point in our lives - whether we are male or female.   Is it just me, or does it seems harder with each year to keep it off?   In this episode, I chat with one of the most renowned physicians in the US, Dr. Lauren Streicher about why we gain weight (especially in mid-life & menopause), and HOW to get rid of it in a healthy way.   We are all beautiful as we are, and it is NOT necessary to have six pack abs or be a size 2 to find love.  What this episode will tell you is how to get to the BEST and healthiest version of you, because how you feel impacts everything relationship you're in (especially if you're dating or in a romantic one).   Here are just some of the topics we covered: 1) How does metabolism change throughout life?  This answer blew my mind, btw! 2) Why sleep is MORE important than ever in the 'battle of the bulge.' 3) Where the "muffin top" comes from, and why... 4) What men REALLY think about our thighs, butts, and cellulite (it's hilarious)... 5) What's the WORST type of fat to gain and why? 6) A great substitute for a date that keeps you healthy and happy! 7) How you can manage 'drinking' calories in a better way (I have started to do this, and it's magical)! 8) What you should offer to bring to a party and WHY it benefits you 9) Lauren's FAVORITE book for weight loss (listen to find out) If you loved this episode, please give it a review - we LOVE LOVE LOVE reading them, and if we can figure out who you are, we will send you a personal note back (you can email us through our website about your review at www.smartdatingacademy.com) If you're READY to find LOVE, schedule a consultation with us at www.smartdatingacademy.com/contact If you want more FREE tips, follow us on Instagram @smartdatingacademy   Bio:  Dr. Lauren Streicher is a top gynecologist, professor at Northwestern University, author of multiple books about women's health, and the host of the podcast "Dr. Streicher's Insider Info - The Menopause Podcast." Exploring Mind and Body

Today we're going to talk about how to avoid summer weight gain. We have more people gain more weight over the summer than they do during the holidays, which is crazy. Most people don't know that. Think that the summer guy works so hard to get a beach body or get in better shape, and then think that weight is not going to accumulate throughout the summer. So it's real. And that's going to be our topic today.  So when it comes to summer weight gain, we are going to jump in and tell you the one of the most staggering stats. What most people don't really think of or maybe don't even believe is that September is our busiest time as a nutrition and fitness company. September. Everyone thinks that it's January, but it's not. January the last couple of years has been busy, fortunately for us. But in most cases, November, December are crazy. We're spending a lot of money on gifts and presents and then January comes along and a lot of people are paying off their credit cards or paying off their bills. So then things start to get busier in February, March, maybe, but September is slammed and I really feel like it is the same thing in gyms, September was the busiest time. It was jam packed and people were like, ‘Oh my gosh, what have I done with myself all summer?' We know we've gained weight. We don't fit in our clothes anymore. Our schedules are kind of upside down, and now it's time to try to get back into shape or get back into routines.  So what we want to talk about today is to help you beat that summer weight gain and try to get into some routines and keep understanding that this is a lifestyle. You have to continue to live a healthy lifestyle, and that's going to make a big difference.

Podcast Intro:  A lot of people experience Weight Creep, a phase where we suddenly gain weight, and they find it hard to reverse the effects. Some just accept while others are determined to fight the weight gain. It's easy to think that Intermittent fasting, working out, and proper dieting is the solution to weight creep. But what if there is an underlying layer to the issue of gaining weight?  In this episode, Cate will talk about Weight Creep, what is going on with the body when gaining weight, and why it is a big deal. What you'll get out of tuning in:  How to fight weight gain How to fight hunger while fasting How to prevent dysmetabolism How long you should do intermittent fasting How to find the root of why you are gaining weight Links/CTA: https://yogahealer.com/form-body-goals/ https://yogahealer.com/ If you want to start intermittent fasting, go to https://yogahealer.com/if-course/ Highlights: Cate says that weight creep is chronic inflammation. The body is in a constant state of high alert and is releasing inflammatory chemicals. It heavily affects the fat cells, blood cells, and the body's many different systems and can be a cause or consequence of multiple diseases. Cate shares that she has been in health and wellness since she was 16. She shares that she had a weight creep at the time when she first got into health and wellness, trying to find the cause of her migraines and allergies. She would read books about health and wellness trying to find answers.  Cate shares that she had been pushing her body where she would only snack on dark chocolate. She didn't know that she was already fasting until she got into the world of intermittent fasting. She says that there was a part of her that was thinking too much about food. If we look at the habits, it's like inflation where there's a problem. Solving the problem would require work. But you don't want to do the work and so, you just print money. The same thing is happening with negative stressors where our weight is creeping.” “When you do the hard work, even if it's simply hard work, everything gets better. Everything gets better, even with the problems underneath the weight. We want to look at the problems underneath the weight.”  “Think of yourself so much more as a closed system than an open system. We are so incredibly durable as mammals, which can be seen with our pets. We are built for survival. We are not built in a delicate way like our entire ancestral past.”  “It's not about forcing the body to fast longer. It's about finding deep satiation in life. How long it takes is going to depend on how you deeply want to get under the layers of why you are overeating, why you are putting on too much, and why you are not letting your fat cells circulate.”

When we start to cut out major food groups like protein we can really start to swing our hormones and the processes in our body, when we start to cut out things like carbs, or fats, and most of my nutrition training was based on low calorie, low protein, low carbs, low fats. And after a couple years of doing that myself and coaching other people to do that, I realized that is the absolute equation for feeling like crap, just keeping your calories low. And in a deficit all the time, will make it very hard to have the energy that you need to just be a human being and deal with the things you need to in life. That doesn't even include getting up and going after the things you really want. And having extra fun and energy to even hang out with your kids and all the things that we need energy fo.We're living beings that have so many different processes going on. And if we're not getting the nutrition and the fuel we need for those things, we're going to feel like crap, the flag that your body's trying to throw up, there is a big signal, it's a big red flag, it's saying, we don't have enough and you are requiring more than we have energy in the tank for more than our battery will handle. In this episode we are also talking about taking the horse by the reins, figuring out what you need to do to change your health. And go get your full panel of labs done so you know where you are at to begin with. What is your energy like? When you workout are you recovering well? Do you feel sore all the time?  Everybody loves being a little sore from a workout, you should not always be sore and you shouldn't be working out those same muscles when you're sore and you shouldn't be compounding energy expenditure on sore muscles, on lack of sleep, and on bad nutrition. Eventually you're just gonna break down. Check out this episode as we explore these topics and when you are ready head on over to my free Facebook group!gogetemcoach.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/fitnesscoachingforweightlosshttps://epicpaddleadventures.com/

Menopause is a phase in women's lives that involves big physiological changes. Like during puberty and pregnancy, women going through menopause experience huge hormonal shifts that can have cascading effects on blood sugar, gut microbiome and adrenal health. These changes can also affect body composition: women who never struggled with weight are suddenly dealing with more belly fat and love handles. Understandably feeling a lack of control, many seek out answers to help understand what's going on. However, many in conventional health still tell women going through perimenopause and menopause to simply work out more and eat less, which can oftentimes exacerbate the new issues these women face. Like Erin discussed in last week's episode: if the approach isn't working, try a new approach. If the physiology changes, we NEED to change the approach. Today Erin peels back the layers on not just what is happening during perimenopause and menopause, but WHY these changes occur and highlights underlying factors that can lead to problems like insulin resistance, adrenal fatigue, cortisol dysregulation, sleep issues, gallbladder problems and weight gain. She also outlines things to consider for adjusting to these physiological changes and ways to support your health during this phase. If you or someone you know is going through menopause and wants to know what a new approach could look like, this will be a valuable episode to hear. In this episode: -Space to have a deeper conversation about weight [5:18] -Preframing the discussion on menopause [9:49] -Understanding the aging body [15:08] -What the hormonal changes during menopause have to do with weight [17:31] -Questions to ask if you notice body composition changes [20:23] -Hormone changes and a potential shift with insulin signaling [21:06] -Imbalanced cortisol and other metabolic changes [23:01] -Signs you might be dealing with insulin resistance and high blood sugars [27:39] -The two huge needle movers when it comes to menopausal changes [30:30] -Building muscle, movement & other ways to improve insulin sensitivity [31:58] -How sleep impacts glucose metabolism [35:40] -Food and gut health considerations for blood sugar during menopause [37:37] -The 3rd most common GI issue for women over 40 [41:04] -The link between insulin and gallbladder problems [43:34] -Symptoms of potential bile issues [45:41] FOR OUR FULL LIST OF LINKS + RESOURCES, HEAD TO: https://www.thefunktionalnutritionist.com/podcast/206-weight-gain-menopause

Have you bought into the lie that thinner is better?  I just had my first photoshoot since 2020. It was my first photoshoot since the pandemic and my first photoshoot at my heaviest weight. I was curious how I would feel during the photoshoot and I was also a little worried about how I might feel once I got the photos back (would I like the photos or would I feel uncomfortable with the parts of me that didn't look “good” in certain lighting or at “unflattering” angles?). To my happy surprise, I felt confident and sexy during the shoot and when I looked at the photos afterward, I LOVED them. I felt like a proud mama recognizing all the hard work I had accomplished in self-love and embodiment work; seeing my true self shine through in the photos and loving her. In today's episode, I'm sharing more about this photoshoot and all of the work I've done to truly love myself, my whole self, in the hopes that you will join me and feel empowered in your body at every shape and size. If you have ever struggled with the lie that you had to be a certain dress size in order to be “sexy,” if you've been hurt by people's unsolicited comments on your body, if you have been hurt by diet culture or fatphobia or maybe you just don't know how to love your body regardless of your size, sign up for my FREE training on how to Unconsume Yourself, so that you can recover your energy, time, power and peace.  Listen to episode 389 now! In episode 389 of the Embodied Podcast we discuss: [3:26] The weight I've gained since 2020 [5:18] Feeling like a proud mama when I received the photos back from my most recent photoshoot [6:12] Letting go of old programming, and why I love growing older [7:30] The 5 components of self-love work and how I create the frameworks for my courses [8:13] How I've grown to love myself more, regardless of the weight that I've gained [11:03] Being in a relationship with a narcissistic man and how that taught me to love my body more [11:49] Why I transitioned out of the fitness world and into the work of embodiment [16:17] Setting boundaries around what I would allow people to say (good and bad) about my body [20:07] What real beauty feels like and the factors that play into attraction [21:14} Get the details on my FREE Unconsume Yourself training {22:56} Responding to IG comments from people who struggle to feel comfortable and confident, specially in their bodies [28:38] The real reason you feel bad about yourself and the shape/size of your body For full show notes and resources, head to https://untameyourself.com/podcasts/389 About the EMBODIED Podcast with Elizabeth DiAlto  Since 2013 I've been developing a body of work that helps women embody self love, healing and wholeness. We do this by focusing on the four levels of consciousness - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. In practical terms this looks like exploring tools and practices to help you  tune into the deep wisdom of the body and the knowing of the heart, which I believe are gateways to our souls. Then we cultivate a new relationship with our minds that allows the mind to serve this wisdom and knowing and soul connection, rather than override it, which is what many of us were taught. If you've been doing self help or spiritual development work for a while, these are the types of foundational things that often people overlook in pursuit of fancier concepts that often aren't practical or sustainable. Here, we will focus on building these strong foundations so you can honestly and thoroughly embody self love. If you're feeling it, subscribe to the show, and leave us a review wherever you listen from. You can also keep up with show updates and community discussion on Instagram here.
