Every episode, we take a deep dive into one of the many, MANY examples of true crime and/or particularly heinous perpetrators of serial murder from around the world, as well as some tales that border on the down-right bizarre. There's a lot to choose fro
In 1922, in Germany, a farming family was brutally murdered by an unknown intruder for an unknown reason. The killer had likely been living above them in their own attic in the days or even weeks before he picked them off one by one in a single evening, not a single one of them knowing what was coming. The case remains unsolved as it turns 100-years old this month. Details are scant and the list of suspects is complicated. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
In 1971, university professor and psychologist Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment with 24 volunteers to record what would happen if you split them into two groups to live out life as Prison Guards and Inmates for a few weeks. Today, it sounds like a bad idea waiting to happen, but that's because we know about Abu Ghraib, and we know about the Stanford Prison Experiment. This episode, we'll discuss the experiment and the how it progressed day-by-day until they were forced to pull the plug early before the volunteers got so into their roles that someone would end up hurt. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Within the past few weeks, a 34-year old cold case involving the violent rape and murder of three women in Eugene, Oregon was finally solved thanks to a few determined detectives and advances in DNA science. Bravo Zulu to the folks over at Parabon Nanolabs for coming in clutch. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Part 2/2 of the Satanic Panic that permeated the darkest fears of any parent: our own children were at risk of being kidnapped by satanic sex cults and pedophile rings. The Salem Witch Trials, the Satanic Panic, and QAnon...how different were they really when you get down to it? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
DEVIL IS REAL AND HELL IS HOT!! For 30 years, Americans were gradually warming up to the idea that Lucifer was more than the red-skinned deal-maker with a pointed tail and sinister goatee. They also had the idea that he was pulling the strings at the moral hearts of the youth of the nation, and there were a growing number of occultists and devil-worshippers plotting to commit the vilest acts behind closed doors and in dark rooms. The first part of a 2-part episode, we'll break down the rise in the belief of demonic cults and the updated Salem witch trials that would follow. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Robert Hansen moved with his wife to Anchorage, Alaska for a fresh start to start their family and to escape Robert's occasional brush-ins with the law. Raising two children together, Robert owned his own bakery business and was known about town as a talented hunter. What nobody knew was that over a decade, Robert had been murdering women who worked the sex trade, hunting many of them for sport in the Alaskan woods. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Identical twins have always fascinated the general public in some way or another. Stories and anecdotes always tell tale that there's a connection between twins that can't be measured or recorded. In this episode, we learn about June and Jennifer Gibbons, identical twin sisters from the UK that spent the majority of their lives talking to no one else besides each other, in their own secret language, and were institutionalized in a mental facility simply for being "strange". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
In Fort Lauderdale, a young group of friends sat in a booth around a tray of pizza. To the other patrons, they looked like any other group of kids hanging out at the pizzeria during the dog days of summer in 1993. For anyone within earshot of the group. they could hear the plans that were being put in motion for the cold blooded murder of one of their own. In this episode, we cover the story of how those friends got to the point where the extrajudicial execution of a supposed bully became a reality. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
They say that music soothes the most savage beast. In the case of the Axeman killer that plagued The Big Easy from 1918 to 1919, that music was Jazz. The Axeman broke into homes in the dead of night and hack at people while they slept, with an axe or hatchet. He wrote the papers and vowed to kill anyone in the city at night where he did not hear jazz music playing. That night, almost every home was alive with jazz musicians pumping out into the night sky, and no one was killed. At least that night. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
On this episode, we talk about the notorious Zodiac Killer, who has eluded police for 6 decades and who's identity may still remain a mystery for some time. A couple of suspects have come close to fitting the bill, but not quite. Today we'll go over this much talked-about killer and speculate on who he might have been, including the most recent suspect whose name has been floating around social media for a big part of 2021. Oh! And HAPPY NEW YEAR!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
WOW LOOK WHO'S FINALLY BACK!!! Sorry folks, the deli has been "closed for renovations" as it were, but we're finally open for business yet again and today I've got a new story for y'all! Phil Spector played a big part in the music industry from the 60's to the 80's. I invented the "wall of sound" recording process and worked with a big list of headline acts to help them create some of the most recognized Number 1 singles ever heard on the radio. He also had the worst hair in the business. But he also killed an actress one night in his house in cold blood. Not a huge list of victims, this one, but a tale worth telling nonetheless. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Welcome back to my podcast if you've been a faithful listener and didn't abandon me during my unexplained absence. Today I talk about a couple examples of unexplained deaths or suicides that happen at hotels. Seriously though, I'm barely chipping the tip of the iceberg, as there is a long history regarding hotels and murders/suicides. It's an information-rich subject that I only have so little time to dive into. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Listen in as we conclude the horrific tale of the crimes committed by Paul and Karla. After that, it'd probably be a good idea to follow this episode up with something a little easier on the heart and the mind to process; something that involves people with a good moral fiber and a happy ending. Something like a Wes Anderson movie or with adorable stop-motion anthropomorphic animals that have a fun and innocent adventure. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
The first segment of a two-episode story, we cover the truly depraved story of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka, an attractive pair of young newlyweds who had dark secret: they were both obsessed with the murder and rape of young girls, and decided to put their fantasies into practice on the young and unsuspecting. Their private life would involve one of the worst examples of sex crimes, if such a thing can even be given a rating system. Truly, the worst. Listener discretion is most advised. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Those who knew Manuel Pardo when he was young never saw anything out of the ordinary from the boy. He was a boy scout and would later join the Navy and become a State Trooper afterwards. But somewhere along the line, Manuel got a taste for blood, and he satisfied that thirst by killing nine drug dealers and associates over their money and their drugs, or sometimes over petty inconveniences. Was he a corrupt ex-cop who switched his badge in exchange for an easy paycheck and all the drugs and money he could ask for? Or was he simply a bad former law enforcement who became disenchanted with the job and watched too many Charles Bronson movies? You figure it out! I'm off to bed...gotta go to work tomorrow. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
If you've ever watched 1994's "Natural Born Killers," you might be a little familiar with what a spree killer is, although barely. This episode covers three of the more profound cases of rampage killings, one of which is the deadliest in American history and happened just a few years ago. It was hard to narrow the list down so small with such a plethora of options to choose from, so this may be the 1st in a few scattered installments for the future. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Gary was one of those rare cases where you have to wonder if there is in fact, the existence of pure evil. "Depraved" is too gentle a word to describe what happened in Gary's basement over the course of a decade. I honestly don't have a whole lot to add here, except that this episode is particularly disturbing if you find sex-crimes to be particularly triggering. In any case, after you've listened to this episode, it would do you well to cleanse your mental palette with a different podcast or TV show that leaves you with a warm fuzzing feeling. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
This week we take a temporary (calm down, my crime junkies) break from murder and depravity to learn about a few of the creatures of urban legend and local folklore that make up a small part of our history and culture. Bigfoot is boring and a little overdone at this point, so instead I chose a handful of others to talk about. A few you may have never heard of, a couple you probably have. At least for this episode, you won't have to depend on headphones or for the kids to be out of earshot. Nothing too shocking or controversial. Isn't that nice? #LONGLIVEBATBOY --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
It's fairly common for the aggressor in an abusive relationship to take things a step further over time. What starts as a push, becomes a slap, a punch, a full out brawl around the house, and so on. It goes without saying that after that, in some cases, the next step can be deadly. That's not always the case, but regarding Katherine Knight, it certainly was. A butcher by trade, Katherine was used to throwing around large hunks of meat and carving them up, removing meat from the bone with little-to-no effort. She was also a fighter, quick to put her fists up in a fistfight with anyone who crossed her, man or woman. Abusive and manipulative by her very nature, she was a formidable person to cross if ever you got on her bad side. For all of the men in her life, she was an absolute terror, and those that were lucky enough to survive her wrath are probably grateful every day that they made it out alive. One of them wasn't so lucky, and in this episode we cover everything that led up to that night when she crossed into that last threshold between abuse and murder. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
If this episode sounds a little like it inspired a certain premium cable series that had something to do with a certain blood-splatter analyst from Miami, you're not the only one to come to that conclusion. Pedro, known by some as Killer Pete, seemed to be aimed towards violence at a young age, killing two before he was 15 and scores of others over the span of 30 years. Here's the catch though: Pedro had a tendency to be very particular about his prey. They had to be criminals. Rapists. Murderers. You might actually be hard pressed to find someone who felt his knife who wasn't guilty of one serious crime or another. Whether he was a heroic anti-hero who removed 70-100 criminals from the Brazilian population, or just another murdering loose cannon for the books, I'll leave that up to you. I'm just here to tell you all about him. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Donald Henry Gaskins damn-near had to fight since he was old enough to stand. Constantly beat up by one of his mom's boyfriends and by the boys at school, Donald had the name "Pee Wee" since birth due to his small frame and stature. As a result, Donald was shaped into a vicious little bastard that reveled in causing pain to anyone that crossed his path. By his teens, he was already well on his way to becoming a prolific career criminal, rapist, and murderer - quite possibly one of the most prolific in U.S. history. Whether you believe in capitol punishment or not, it's hard to argue against the opinion that maybe the world would have been better off if after his first arrest, he'd simply been taken out back behind the courthouse to be given a quick bullet behind the ear. If that sounds harsh, give me a chance to fill you in on the details of the life of Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins, and you can come to your own conclusion. Listener discretion is especially advised on this one. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Bad combination of a manufactured personality, untreated mental disorders, and a house to himself led John Lawson to rename himself in honor of the demon from The Exorcist and do everything he could to fulfill his self-appointed role as a tool of the Devil himself. Carving his teeth into points, splitting his tongue like a serpent, and covering his body head-to-toe with satanic messages and imagery wasn't hardcore enough for John...or Pazuzu as he would have you call him. The whole thing would be pretty cringe, until word got around that Pazuzu had buried a few dead bodies in his backyard. **Shorter than usual episode this week, and I'm sorry for that. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Can an actual delusional disorder be transferred from one person to another? Is "madness" contagious? During this episode, we discuss the curious case of the Eriksson twins, who to all who knew them seemed to be completely normal and never displayed any outward signs of mental health abnormalities. Then, when the sisters met up one day in 2008 after living oceans apart, they went on a road trip from Ireland to England under strange circumstances, and based on their actions, seemed to be neck deep in their own shared paranoid delusions, which caused them to run head-first into oncoming traffic and for one of them to stab an innocent Samaritan to death. First they were fine...then they were insane...and then they were fine again. The brain is a wonderous and curious thing, and figuring out how or why what happened happened is a mystery in itself. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Elizabeth Short, aka The Black Dahlia, is one of the most well-known unsolved murders in the country. The mystery of the culprit and the brutality of the crime are the stuff of legend, much like Jack the Ripper or the Zodiac. This episode, we're going to focus more on one of the top contenders on the long list of suspects in the Black Dahlia's gruesome murder, George Hodel Jr. Whether or not he was truly guilty of killing Elizabeth, he may have been guilty of several other crimes that occurred before they crossed paths...and perhaps a slew of others that happened after. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
It's usually a given that murder has to have a motive, even if only barely. To commit such a crime, there had to have been a reason. Sometimes, there is no reason, and all we're left with is the shock and pain of having someone taken from us for truly, no reason at all. Today we're going to take a brief look at a gruesome and absolutely pointless murder of a young woman who only wanted to have a night out to celebrate her new job with her friends. For many of my early listeners, this story may be familiar, and it may have happened right in your neighborhood. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Anyone who's experienced the tragedy of losing a loved one can tell you how hard it is to let go. However, today I'm sharing 4 stories of people who took that feeling far too literally, and did whatever they could to keep their loved ones by their side long after the heart stops beating. As dark and as macabre as it is, we can't help but get a sense of romantic tragedy from it all. Wary be to anyone with a weak stomach, as today's episode will go into vivid detail about decomposition. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Settle in and relax as today we talk about Mayhem, the Norwegian death metal band that lived up to their name, whether it was intentional or not. They were the first to use the black & white corpse paint for their shows...not like those glam-rockers in KISS, or the theatrical effect like Alice Cooper. They wanted to make ugly sounding music and look grotesque while they shocked the audience with impaled pig heads and self-mutilation, paving the way for Dimmu Borgir, Watain, Cradle of Filth and Marilyn Manson, years before most of them took the stage. Amidst all the black, spike-studded leather and jackbooted kids with long hair with nothing better to do than scream into a microphone and bang their heads, there was suicide, murder, and plots of terrorism. If you were to ask Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap what he thought of Mayhem and how black these dudes were, he'd say "none...none more black." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
On our first episode, we cover Ed Gein, the man whose odd life and notorious, murderous cravings served as the inspiration for several iconic horror movie villains that would plague the dreams of many. He's the guy who'd make you worry about that solitary and seemingly nice fellow that lives alone in that cabin in your quiet little town, and wonder what he gets up to out there, and if he's got some literal skeletons in his closet. Oh, and Sigmund Freud would have a field day with this guy. Serious mommy issues. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
